Table of Contents

On behalf of the MBA Career Services Council board of directors, I would like to welcome you to the 5th Annual European Conference. This conference focuses on the trends in MBA recruitment in Europe and provides a platform uniquely created by MBA CSC to facilitate discussion and best practices between business schools and corporations.

The European Conference engages a diverse audience of participants from Europe, Asia, Canada and the United States providing a rich atmosphere for exchange of ideas around the increasingly global profile of MBA graduates. The wide range of countries where employment is secured by graduates coupled with the unique program portfolio offered by each school continues to influence the importance of tracking and accurately reflecting MBA employment statistics. The Standards Committee will provide an update on employment standards designed to equip you to best collect and communicate your data. This data will allow prospective students to easily understand the unique profile of your program and help global employers present opportunities which align well with your graduates.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to the entire conference committee for creating this special event, and particular thanks go to Marcel Kalis and the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT) for so generously providing their facilities. Enjoy the discussion over the next few days and welcome to Berlin!

Nicole Hall“You will hear from experts within our field who can provide you with strate-gies to enhance your MBA recruitment and career services outcomes.”

MBA Student Panel In delivering effective and appreciated Career Services and managing on-campus recruiting efforts, gauging expectations and deciding how to tailor to them is a part of the game. In a moderated discussion, you’ll have the chance to ask questions of an MBA student panel representing a diverse range of EU schools. Moderated by Dory Grandia, Coach & Presentation Skills Trainer, Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University

Corporate Panel

Once we’ve heard from the students, we’ll take a look at MBA recruitment with the help of several panelists representing the corporate side. Marcel Kalis will lead a panel discussion and Q&A with an eye to uncovering new trends as well as bridging the gap between student expectations and market realities. Moderated by Marcel Kalis, Head of Career Services, ESMT European School of Management and Technology.

Panelists: • Blair Beavis, University Recruitment Manager at Johnson & Johnson, EMEA, based in London• Cornelia Hoppe, Head of Human Resources at Springstar GmbH, based in Berlin• Jane Murphy, University Programmes Specialist at Google, based in Dublin• Dr. Ole Halfpap, Partner at Ernst & Young, based in Hamburg/Munich

Lessons learned - Improving the three-dimensional relationship

We provide our services as one of three partners in a complex relationship within an ambiguous world – the job market is as dynamic as the students are diverse in their expectations. A student is a client of our services and has his or her own set of motivations and needs, but to a corporate relation, a school is ‘producing’ potential candidates who need to meet a complex set of criteria in order to be recruited. After establishing in the morning the challenges we face as CS professionals in delivering quality - and keeping our sanity - we’ll have the chance to hear the student perspective before lunch and the corporate perspective after lunch. Referencing some of the issues we’ve discussed in sessions at past conferences with Daniel Porot and James Waldroop, at the end of the day, we’ll look at some ways to renew our approach this complex, ongoing relationship. Moderated by: Dory Grandia and Marcel Kalis

Student & Corporate Development During this session, you’ll have the opportunity to foster your own development and improve your ability to develop your students’ strengths. Martina Pumpat of Gallup will present Gallup’s strengthsfinder and how operating from your own strengths can help you build trusted advisor relationships.

Evisors will present on: Keeping up with the times - the FT rankings, recruitment innovation and how to improve elite employer engagement. Delivered by Evisors COO and Co-Founder Christine Apold and European Expansion Director LeeAnn Mutchler.

Trends in the Asian Business School MarketLearn more on topics such as: Employment opportunities and challenges in Asian Markets for European Business Schools, Career Coaching for Asian students, and Indian Business schools and their career management process. Delivered by Stephan Weidinger, Corporate Development Manager at HEC Paris. Webinar: Recruiting Talent in EuropeRapid change in today’s world means that recruiters are required to access increasingly diverse pools of talent, quickly and cheaply. MBA schools in Europe typically have very international groups of students - often in excess of 90% of the class coming from outside the school’s country. This webinar will help recruiters understand how to access this talent, providing guidance on recruiting processes, timelines, etc. with access to a panel of careers centre staff from European schools. This session will take place live here, and be broadcast as a webinar in the U.S. Moderated by Derek Walker, Director of Careers at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.

Best Practices SessionsShare your experience with your colleagues and consider trying out something new! In two consecutive sessions, you’ll have the choice between the following topics:

Service vendors and workshop providers: Want to know the advantages to choosing one particular vendor or workshop provider over another? Ask your colleagues which platforms work best for them. Career services & corporate reps only. Moderated by: Tony Somers, MBA Director of Career Management Center, HEC

Career Services for EMBAs: An increasing number of schools are providing career services to their EMBA classes, and an increasing number of EMBAs are not company-sponsored. But, an EMBA has different needs than a full-time MBA. Find out what’s going on at other schools and develop new ideas for adapting to your own program. Moderated by: Aliya Ali-Afzal, Associate Director Careers, EMBA and MBA, Hult International Business school.

Career Services at small schools: Smaller schools don’t have the advantage (or the burden) of economies of scale. Share ideas for encouraging corporate relationships and providing effective career services to small classes. Moderated by: Brian Marrinan, MBA Careers, UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School

Corporate Relationships: There are still some good-old-fashioned on-campus recruiters out there, but most are a dying breed. Nowadays, corporate relationship building requires more and more flexibility. Learn approaches to increasing the number and improving the quality of your corporate relationships. Moderated by: Aidan Hetherington, Careers and Corporate Relations Manager, University of Edinburgh Business School

Employment reporting and MBACSC standards: MBACSC board members past and present will be available on a walk-in basis to answer questions in one-to-one or small group format. No question is too small! Find out how to improve data collection and employment reporting processes at your school.

Corporate representatives: MBA Career Services best practices seen from the corporate side! We turn the tables in this session, and ask corporate participants which practices work best for them, or which CS innovations they’d like to see more of.

European and Non-European MBAs: How They’re Different, How They’re Not by James Waldroop

Drawing on a database of over 400,000 people, this research-based presentation details how European MBAs and MBAs from the rest of the world are similar and different in what interests and motivates them, their perceptions of their abilities, and their scores on measures of various fundamental aspects of personality. Where possible, we will examine differences among different nationalities. Following this, there will be a discussion of the implications of these findings for working with students.

Dr. James Waldroop has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and has spent the last three decades working in the area of career development and counseling. Until 2001 he was Co-Director of MBA Career Development Programs at the Harvard Business School, where he worked since 1981. Jim is the author of two books and five articles in the Harvard Business Review, as well as articles in Fortune magazine and other business press.

His work focuses on two areas of interface between psychology and business: career assessment and counseling, and leadership development. He has worked with organizations in both the manufacturing and service sectors, from Fortune 50 corporations to smaller high-growth firms. His clients include McKinsey & Company, Fidelity Management Research Company, Sony Music, Globespan Capital, Manpower, the Boston Consulting Group, and the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation. With his colleague Dr. Timothy Butler, Dr. Waldroop developed the career assessment program Career Leader®, currently used by over 500 MBA programs and corporations around the world, including Microsoft, McKinsey & Company, Manpower, the Boston Consulting Group, and Becton Dickinson. Since leaving Harvard Business School, Dr. Waldroop spends his time doing counseling/coaching, research, writing, and training.

After reunification, the building functioned as the temporary office of the German Chancellor. In 2004/2005 the building was transformed into a modern learning institution. In 2006, the campus was inaugurated by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
