Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr. Chancellor

Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., a native of Mo-bile, Alabama, was named Chancellor of Troy University Sept. 1, 1989. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Mon-tevallo and his doctorate from the University of Alabama.

Uponcompletion of his bachelor’s degree in 1967, Hawkins was commissioned a lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a platoon leader during the Vietnam War. For his combat duty, he received the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and a citation from the Korean Marine Corps.

Hawkins has overseen an era of change and growth at Troy, as worldwide enrollment has more than doubled from 14,000 in 1989 to approximately 30,000 today. He led the merger of the worldwide Troy State University System into the unified Troy University, an initiative called “One Great University.” More than $200 million has been invested in capital improvements by the Hawkins Administration, including new academic buildings on all four of Troy’s Alabama campuses. Chancellor Hawkins served as the catalyst for the University’s evolution to an international institution, as Troy has attracted record numbers of students from other nations and established more than 60 teaching sites around the world. During his tenure, academic standards for admission have been increased, new degree programs were es-tablished in all academic colleges, and intercollegiate athletics joined the highest level of NCAA competition.

Hawkins’ professional background includes his service as an as-sistant dean at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (1971-1979) and as president of the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind in Talladega (1979-1989)

In 1985, he was honored by the University of Montevallo as Dis-tinguished Alumnus of the Year, and was the recipient of the 2003 All-American Football Foundation’s “Top College President” Award. In 2005 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Murphy High School in Mobile, Alabama. In 2007 he was recognized as the “Alabama Citizen of the Year” by the Alabama Broadcasters Association. In 2011, Dr. Hawkins was recognized with the Chief Executive Leadership Award presented by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

Three buildings have been named in his honor: the “Jack and Janice Hawkins Chapel” at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf

and Blind, the “Hawkins-Adams- Long Hall of Honor” and “Jack Hawkins, Jr. Hall” which serves the College of Education of Troy University. Hawkins was profiled as part of two books published in 2004: “Above and Beyond: Former Marines Conquer the Civil-ian World” by Rudy Socha and Carolyn Darrow and “The Entre-preneurial College President” by James L. Fisher and James V. Koch.

Hawkins serves on the board of directors of the Business Coun-cil of Alabama, Better Business Bureau of Central Alabama, and Troy Bank and Trust Company. He is chairman of the Governor’s Committee on Employment of the Disabled, and the Air Univer-sity Board of Visitors at Maxwell Air Force Base. He also serves as chairman of the Southern Association Colleges and Schools (SACS) Board of Directors and as President of the Sun Belt Con-ference Executive Committee.

He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Asso-ciation of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), as Chairman of the Council of University Presidents in Alabama (1999-2001) and as President of the Southland Football League.

He has also served as a trustee of Talladega College, the HelenKeller Eye Research Foundation, and the American Foundation for the Blind. He is a member of the Troy Rotary Club.

Dr. Hawkins’ family includes his wife, Janice, and daughters Katie and Kelly. Katie is married to Capt. Dan Beall of the United States Air Force and the couple has one son, Noah and a daughter, El-lyotte. Dr. and Mrs. Hawkins are members of the First Baptist Church of Troy.

John HartwellDirector of Athletics

As a new chapter begins in the legacy of Troy Athletics, John Hartwell brings expe-rience, energy and a strong vision as the new director of athletics at Troy University.

Hartwell is in his first year as the director of athletics at Troy University after taking over on Oct. 1, 2012. Hartwell was formal-ly introduced in a press conference on Sept. 14, 2012.

“Today’s announcement culminates a process that was an excit-ing process that saw an applicant pool the depth of which we’ve not seen,” Troy Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., said at the press conference. “We had more than 65 applicants or nominees for this position. We had 25 sitting AD’s at the Division I level or se-nior associate AD’s.

“I think that reflects how far this athletics program has come; to have that much interest across this nation is encouraging. To-day’s appointment truly is about the future of Trojan Athletics.”

Hartwell, 47, came to Troy following nine years at the University of Mississippi where he was the senior executive associate ath-letics director, serving as the number two administrator in ath-letics.

“I can’t tell you how proud and excited that both myself and my family are to be members of the Trojan Family,” Hartwell said upon being introduced. “That’s one of the things that I have no-ticed in a very short time, that it truly is a family, and we are so excited and so glad to be a part of that and we look forward to big things to come in the future for Troy Athletics.”

Hartwell joins an athletics department that recently saw a record 218 student-athletes earn 3.0 GPAs in the Fall 2011 semester, and he stressed the importance of that feat at his press conference.

“At the end of the day, our vision is a constant commitment to a maximum effort for three things,” Hartwell said. “Academic ex-cellence, positive social development and winning champion-ships.”

Hartwell served as the treasurer and chief operating officer of the University of Mississippi Athletic Association Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) organization that generates over $17 million annually for the Ole Miss Athletics Department through priority seating and major gifts.

He was responsible for the day-to-day administrative oversight of the football, men’s basketball and baseball programs, along with sport oversight of the softball and men’s and women’s track & field and cross country programs. Hartwell also oversaw

the Rebels’ business office, ticket office, equipment room, mer-chandise sales, concessions and football scheduling. Hartwell has scheduled several marquee football games for the Rebels including a home-and-home series with Texas beginning this season.

Hartwell managed the growth of the Ole Miss athletic budget from $26 million in the 2003 fiscal year to over $47 million in the 2012 fiscal year. He also chaired the search to hire men’s basket-ball head coach Andy Kennedy in 2006. He was heavily involved in negotiations that increased revenues with contracts for ap-parel and footwear (Nike), merchandise sales (Sports Avenue/LIDS), concessions (Centerplate), wireless provider (C Spire) and video boards (Daktronics). He served on the Southeastern Con-ference Ticket Committee and was a leader of the annual SEC Chief Financial Officer’s Forum.

A 1987 graduate of The Citadel, Hartwell spent four plus years as a certified public accountant with Ernst & Young before return-ing to his alma mater to serve as the director of internal audit in 1991. In his three years working at The Citadel, Hartwell also was the basketball color commentator for the Citadel Network. From 1994 to 1997 he was in private business as the chief financial of-ficer for a $36 million beverage distributor on the South Carolina coast.

Hartwell’s direct experience in athletics administration began as the assistant athletic director for business at Georgia State in 1997. He was promoted to associate athletic director for inter-nal affairs in 1999, and his responsibilities expanded to include sport supervision for baseball, men’s & women’s golf and men’s & women’s track & field and cross country. He also had oversight over the Panthers’ athletic facilities and game management in addition to his previous responsibilities of all financial aspects of the department.

He also was the color analyst for men’s basketball on the Georgia State Radio Network for the first three years he was at GSU. While at Georgia State, Hartwell earned a master’s degree in sports ad-ministration.

Athletics has always been a big part of Hartwell’s life, starting in high school where he was an all-state basketball selection at UMS-Wright in Mobile, Ala. The 6-foot-7 forward played along-side current North Carolina State head coach Mark Gottfried in high school. Hartwell went on to play collegiately at The Citadel, where he was a three-year starter, a four-year letterman and cap-tain of the team as a senior in 1987. Current Tulane head coach Ed Conroy was a collegiate teammate of Hartwell’s.

Hartwell is married to Dr. Heather Seale Hartwell, and they have two daughters Lauren, who is 3 years old, and Madison who was born on May 28, 2012. Hartwell also has a 20-year old son, Hunt-er, who is a junior at Vanderbilt.

Dating back to the mid-1970s, the Troy University golf program boasts suc-cess that is unprecented in the realm of collegiate athletics. During a 19 year period that spanned across three differ-ent decades, Troy finished in the NCAA Division II top 10 every year. Troy also se-cured three national titles, three second place finishes, and four third place fin-ishes. The Trojans averaged a third place finish every year during that span.

The Trojans’ run began in 1975 when they notched a seventh place finish. The two years following, Troy claimed Na-tional Titles behind the play of a three-time All-American Ronnie Mobley. 1980 was also a championship year for the program, as Paul Perini, an All-American in 1980 and 1981, took home the indi-vidual National Championship.

At one point in its program history, Troy was tied for third all time behind Columbus with four Championships, and Florida Southern with six.

The championship history not only exists within the team, but also within the individual players. In its entire pro-gram history, Troy has produced 38 All-Americans on the men’s side of the board.

Not to be outdone, the Troy women’s program has also had its wealthy share

of sucess. The Trojans weren’t able to compete until 1984 in a Division II tour-nament, but they made it worth their while for a title. They backed that up with a fourth place finish in 1985, before go-ing on to claim another Championship in 1986.

The next two years were merely identical for the women, as they finished in the top three each year. 1989 marked the final championship for the women, as their program was dropped the next year in 1990. Women’s Golf was then re-instated again in 1993.

During the run of women’s titles, Troy produced four different All-Americans in Tracy Boon, Samantha Brown, Debbie Hancock and Tracy Wright.

Success as of late has been achieved not only on the course, but in the class-room. Troy has produced 10 Academic All-Americans since the program’s ex-istence, with some student-athletes achieving the honor multiple times. Ryan Campbell, Bradley Champion, Keith Cone, Brent Dorner, Brian Ether-idge, Matt Robbins, Joseph Shahady, Liz Balkcom, Haley Lawrence, and Shauna McVeigh go down in the books as some of the most accomplished Troy golfers when it comes to their academic studies. Lawrence, a December 2012 graduate of

Troy, highlights the most recent success, having been named an Academic All-American four times. She was also given the honor of the Sorrell Award in the spring of 2012, which is given annually to a graduating senior with the highest academic GPA of all athletes.

Now in his fourth season at Troy, Bart Barnes brings a young, energetic presence to the green as the assis-tant head coach of the Troy Men’s and Women’s Golf Teams.

Prior to coming to Troy, Barnes dis-played a sharp mind off the play-ing field, being named valedictorian of his graduating class at Elba High School and garnering Academic All-America honors from Central Ala-bama Community College in 2006. After spending two years in Central Alabama fine-tuning his craft, he then transferred to Middle Tennessee State University for his final two years of playing eligibility.

Barnes’ most notable finish during his college career was his final tour-nament, the Middle Tennessee State Intercollegiate, where he placed second. Upon graduation, Barnes

was granted the honor of being the under-25 representative for the Alabama State Team in the Southeastern Chal-lenge Cup Matches in 2008. Later pursuing his dreams of playing professionally, he was a member of the National Golf Association (NGA) Hooters Tour in 2009.

Hailing from Elba, Ala., Barnes received a mar-keting degree from Mid-dle Tennessee State in 2008. Barnes is currently pursuing his master’s de-gree in sport and fitness management at Troy University.

** During the 1972-73 season, the first full academic year of its operation, the AIAW offered its first eight national championships in the same eight sports (badminton, basketball, golf, gymnastics, softball, swimming & diving, track & field, and volleyball). the NCAA sponsored its first women’s championship in each sport in the 1981-82 academic year. Individual athletic programs and, in some cases, individual teams within a program were permitted to choose to participate in either the AIAW or NCAA competitions (or both in a few instances). There is no year-by-year available from Troy’s Division II years in the NCAA, however they did win the NCAA Division II Golf Championships in 1984, 1986 and 1989.**
