Just two years. That’s all the time it took for Kevin Donley to take a collegiate football program from scratch at the University of Saint Francis and turn it into not only a winner, but a conference champion and perennial NAIA Top 25 team. Donley, who is in his 14th season guiding the Cougars, came to Fort Wayne in 1997 with a vision. With the blessing of the USF administration, he quickly developed one of the most successful collegiate football programs at any level during any time peri-od. Known as the ‘Founding Father’ of col-legiate football in Fort Wayne, Ind., Donley secured his and the program’s 100th win in the tenth game of the 2007 season, just the 121st game in program history and unofficially the fastest program ever to win 100 games in a program’s first 10 seasons in the fewest number of games. He’s been a conference coach of the year 15 times including MSFA Mideast League Coach-of-the-Year seven times. Donley was recognized for his contribu-tion to the Fort Wayne Community in June 2007 when he was named a ‘Red Coat Recipient’ by Mad Anthony’s Charity Clas-sic for Children, one of the most presti-gious awards in Fort Wayne. Donley, who was inducted into the USF Athletic Hall of Fame in October 2008, has guided the Cougars to six unbeaten regu-lar seasons and 12 consecutive winning seasons. USF has won an unprecedented nine Mid-States Football Association Mideast League championships includ-ing eight straight, and has qualified for 12 NAIA Football Championship Series including a record tying 11 consecutive (1999-08). Donley guided USF to three consecutive NAIA National Championship runner-up finishes (2004-06). USF won its first 13 games of the season three con-secutive seasons and Donley has been named National Coach of the Year twice (2004 NAIA; 2005 Schutt). A 2004 inductee into the Georgetown College (near Lexington, Ky.,) Athletic Hall of Fame and Indiana Football Hall of Fame inductee (June 2005), Donley was a line-backer and fullback at Anderson College. Donley, 60, has two children, son and of-fensive coordinator, Patrick, and daughter Megan.

Season 14, Game 11 -- NAIA FCS, 1st Round

Defensive mindedNo. 9 Cougars earn return road ticket to ‘Show me’ state to tangle with No. 7 Missouri Valley College in first round of NAIA FCS

L ittle changes for the University of Saint Fran-cis heading into the 11th game of the season. Just that now it is official. The ninth-ranked

Cougars are in playoff mode. USF has been ‘unof-ficially’ in playoff mode for the last four games since losing Game No. 6 to then No. 2 Marian. The Cou-gars couldn’t afford another loss and still have a chance at the NAIA Football Championship Series. On Sunday afternoon, players and the USF coaching staff hovered at or near computer screens or watching their cell phones until the team meet-ing at 3 p.m. before conditioning started. About 3:40 NAIA released the pairings and the mad scramble for information on No. 7 Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo., kicked into full gear. On paper, MVC holds an edge in numerous statis-tical categories compared with USF in NAIA stats: USF/Rnk MVC/Rnk USF +Scoring offense 40.8/6th 40.3/7th + 0.5Scoring defense 21.4/27th 11.8/4th - 9.6Pass Offense 246.1/14th 163.5/55th + 82.6Pass Defense 159.2/23rd 130.7/3rd - 28.5Rushing Offense 157.0/33rd T230.1/8th - 73.0Rushing Defense 109.1/24th 74.0/3rd - 35.0Total Offense 403.1/18th 393.6/23rd + 9.5Total Defense 268.3/14th T204.7/2nd - 64.6

The Vikings, 7-8 in the NAIA FCS, are making their ninth appearance and prefer to run the ball be-hind a big, strong line, maintain possession and eat up the clock. The Vikings are relying on a freshman at QB -- Bruce Reyes. The 6-foot, 180-pounder has played in 7 games and when he does pass, he is completing 55 percent on 85-for-154 with nine interceptions. He has thrown for 15 TDs and is averaging 137.2 yards per game. He has thrown for at least one TD in all 7 games. He threw for a season best four TDs against Evangel. MVC has won despite turning the ball over 15 times on interceptions and eight more times on fumbles. The winner in the turnover department just may be the determing factor in this clash. USF will be the first member of the Mid-States Football As-sociation Mideast League that MVC has played since 2008. The Vikings played at then conference member Ohio Domini-can and stunned the No. 3 Panthers 48-34 in a second-round NAIA FCS game. The Vikes racked up 284 rushing yards and maintained possession for 40 of the 60 minutes.

honor late Monday afternoon. In the late morning Coleman (Fort Wayne, IN / Harding H.S.) was named Mid-States Football Association Mideast League Special Teams Player of the Week. University of Saint Francis junior Austin Coleman has been chosen Mid-States Football Association Mideast League Special Teams Player of the Week for the second week in a row and third time this season after he mowed down two conference re-cords and tied a national record on Saturday in the Cougars’ 59-20 win over NCAA Division II Central State University. Coleman returned a first-quarter kickoff 88 yards to wipe out a 6-3 USF deficit. It tied the NAIA re-cord for KOR TDs in a single season at four, set an MSFA single-season record at four and set an MSFA career record at five. The NAIA career record is seven and held by two players.

Coleman has 617 yards in KOR this season, eight yards shy of the USF record set by Daniel Carter in 2009. Coleman is USF’s first 3-time weekly award winner since 2006 when linebacker Brian Kurtz was awarded the honor five times, a USF record. Cole-man is the third Cougar to earn the honor three times in one season joining Kurtz and Cory Jacquay (3 times in 2004) on that list. This is the 14th NAIA National Player-of-the-Week award for a member of the USF football team and the second this season. USF senior LB Ross Bau-man earned the award earlier this season. It is the third time a member of the USF football team has earned the national special teams POTW honor. Daniel Carter and Cody Capps did it in 2008.Coleman career KOR for TD’s . . . 1 in 2010, 4 in 2011

Sophomore LB earns national weekly award University of Saint Francis linebacker Justin Juarez (Lowell, IN / Lowell H.S.) has been named an NAIA Defensive Player of the Week by Beyond Sports Col-lege Network after the 6-foot-2, 218-pound sophomore intercepted three passes at Taylor last Saturday. Juarez tied the USF single-game interception record with his three picks and returned one of them 30 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter of USF’s 46-14 win on Nov. 5, 2011. Juarez scored the 30th TD by an interception return for USF and he finished with 45 yards in return yard-age. He also tied for the USF lead in tackles with eight, three solo. Juarez, who moved into a starting role at linebacker in the Malone game on Oct. 22, is the first player in the Mid-States Football Association with three interceptions in one game this season. He has four career interceptions. Beyond Sports College Network is a free network for college students, student athletes, faculty, staff, and coaches.
