John De Souza has been a member of the Varsity Blues field hockey program since 1990. He has been an assistant to legendary coach Liz Hoffman as well as coaching veteran and current U of T director of intercollegiate and high performance sport director Beth Ali. He has helped guide the Blues to 11 OUA championship titles, CIS bronze and silver medals and most recently a CIS gold medal performance in 2007 and 2010. 1998 was De Souza’s first tour of duty as the Blues bench boss. 2011 OUA ALL-STARS

John DeSouza and Amanda Woodcroft were awarded top honours and three others earned all-star status as Ontario University Athletics announced 2011 field hockey award winners on Monday night.

Woodcroft becomes the first Varsity Blue since 2003 to be named the OUA rookie of the year. The Waterloo, Ont., na-tive ranked second on the team and tied for fourth in OUA scoring with seven goals over 12 games played. Woodcroft was also named an OUA all-star.

“Amanda is the next big star in CIS field hockey,” said Varsi-ty Blues head coach John DeSouza. “We’ve had some truly talented players come through our program and Amanda is no exception. She is so versatile and excels in any position we’ve put her in this season.”

DeSouza earns his first OUA coach of the year recognition in his sixth season as the Blues bench boss. This season, he has guided the Varsity Blues to a near-perfect 11-1 regular season record and has accumulated a 92-15-9 over-all coaching record during his career at U of T.

Veteran players Hannah Tighe and Kaelan Watson, as well as sophomore standout Alexandra Evanyshyn, also earned 2011 all-star nods.

A native of Penticton, B.C., this is Tighe’s fourth all-star nod in five years. The team co-captain scored five goals in 12 games played this season.

The 2010 CIS championship MVP, Watson earns her fourth all-star recognition in as many years. The Richmond, B.C., native scored six goals in 11 games played and helped lead U of T’s defensive unit that allowed a CIS-low three goals against all season.

In only her second year of competition, Evanyshyn garners her first all-star award. The Burlington, Ont., native led the Blues in scoring and ranked second in the OUA with 14 goals in 2011.

2011 OUA CHAMPIONS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues claimed their first provincial title since 2008 with a dominant 6-0 victory over the host Guelph Gryphons at the 2011 OUA field hockey championship, October 28-30.

Meeting in their sixth OUA final since 2005, Toronto knocked off the three-time defending champion Gryphons to earn their 28th provincial title since 1971 and fifth in the last 10 years.

U of T took control from the get-go, maintaining pos-session and playing the majority of the first half deep in Gryphons territory.

The first goal came at the 26-minute mark when Alex Thick (North Vancouver, BC) scooped the ball over Guelph goalkeep, Kaye McLagan (Mitchell, Ont.) and into the net. Thick would earn her second after capitalizing on a corner opportunity to advance Toronto’s lead to 2-0 at half time.

The Gryphons had their fair share of goal scoring chances in the second half, but weren’t able to take advantage of their corner opportunities or break away situations. The Blues proved once again how dangerous their squad is when executing short corners, and used these opportuni-ties to their advantage throughout the entire match. The Varsity Blues goalkeep, Kathryn Williams (Burlington, ON) was flawless, and would earn the shutout for Toronto.

OUA all-star Alexandra Evanyshyn added two goals in the second half, while Kelley Lusk and Lauren Mansfield added single tallies in the win.

The Blues hold a 76-10-8 head-to-head record over the Gryphons since their first meeting on Oct. 27, 1967. Guelph’s first win over Toronto came on Sept. 25, 2005. Since then, the two teams have been perennial power-houses in OUA field hockey, with Toronto holding a slight upperhand (12-10-5) and now claiming a fourth provincial title, compared to the Gryphons three.

VARSITY BLUES \ \ \ \ \ \ \

RECORD MANUALFor over forty years the University of

Toronto has been central to the growth

of field hockey as a Canadian university

sport. Since the early 1960s, field

hockey has flourished and the U of T

Varsity Blues have created a tradition of

excellence and achievement at both the

provincial and national levels.

The foundations were laid early, when

the Varsity Blues captured their first

Ontario-Quebec university field hockey

championship in 1963. That victory

was just the beginning, with U of T

going on to claim an incredible 26 OUA

championships and ten national titles.

The Varsity Blues are also the leaders

in “firsts”, winning the inaugural OWIAA

outdoor title in 1971, capturing the

inaugural CIS outdoor championship

in 1975 and claiming the first Ontario

indoor hockey banner in 1985. U of

T women’s field hockey also had an

incredible run from 1963 to 1979, going

an amazing 17 season without a single

loss in league play.

Liz Hoffman continued the emerging

dynasty in 1974, coaching the Blues

for the next 20 seasons and retiring

in 1994 to become U of T’s Director of

Athletics. Under her guidance the team

won 16 Ontario league titles and eight

CIAU championships.

Following Hoffman’s retirement, Beth

Ali took the reins and soon posted

three consecutive undefeated seasons

(1995-1997). The winning streak

has continued, with the Varsity Blues

claiming eight of the past 11 OUA

championships since 1997. At the

national level, Ali captured a CIAU

crown in 1996, a silver medal in 2000

and six bronze medals (1995, 1997,

1998, 2004, 2005, 2006) before retiring

at the end of the 2006-07 season.

Carrying on this successful coaching

tradition is John De Souza, Blues

assistant coach for 18 years. A

provincial player for 13 years and a

national team player for seven years,

De Souza coached the national indoor

field hockey team in 2007 and was

the assistant coach with the 2007 Pan

American team that won gold and

represented Canada at the 2008 Beijing

Olympics.

In total, Varsity teams have won 36

outdoor championships (26 provinicial

and ten national) plus 15 Ontario indoor

titles. The program has produced

numerous athletes for Canada’s junior

and senior national teams, as well as

eight Olympians, 67 CIS all-Canadians

since 1985, ten inductees to the U of

T Sports Hall of Fame and eight U of T

Athletes of the Year.

BLUES WIN INAUGURAL CWIAU FIELD HOCKEY TITLEIn 1975 the U of T women’s field

hockey team (pictured at left) not only

captured the inaugural CWIAU cham-

pionship, but with that victory became

the first Varsity Blues women’s squad

to earn a national university title. The

team was inducted into the U of T

Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.

Led by head coach Liz Hoffman, the

team qualified for the first Canadian

university championship with an impres-

sive display at the OWIAA champion-

ships at York University. The Varsity

Blues won their 13th straight OWIAA

title with a 7-0 record, while outscoring

the opposition by an impressive 27-0

margin.

At the CWIAU championship hosted by

the University of British Columbia, U of

T opened the round-robin portion of the

event with a pair of shutout victories

over Lakehead (2-0) and McGill (3-0).

The Varsity Blues started the second

day of competition with a 3-0 win over

Dalhousie, before falling 3-2 on penalty

strokes to the University of Victoria in

their final match of round robin play.

The 3-1 record earned U of T a three-

way tie for first place with UVic and

Dalhousie. U of T claimed the top spot

on goal differential and with it, a place

in the finals versus UVic.

After a scoreless opening half in the

final, U of T’s Anne Hofland scored early

in the second stanza to give U of T a

1-0 advantage, a lead that they would

never relinquish. The Varsity Blues

then controlled play until the final horn

to earn the inaugural national crown.

Carol MacDougall paced U of T with a

three-goal tournament, while Diana Mil-

lar, Anne Hofland and co-captain Susan

Scott added two goals apiece.
