STARTGAMES REPORT///
SUMMARYThe second 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games has ended with its place in the world of winter sports firmly established. We cannot have hoped for better so early in the development of the event. Our international reputation is built on high quality organisation, world-class venues, ideal training opportunities and a high level of competition. Our relaxed Kiwi environment makes Winter Games unique in the world of winter sports.
Importantly, the Winter Games are helping to further develop strong alliances with our winter sports friends in Asia and North America. The IOC decision to allocate the Winter Olympics to Korea is very welcome and is an exciting opportunity to grow the profile of winter sports in the region. We can now look forward to building a close relationship with Pyeongchang 2018 over the next seven years.
For 2011 we added the sports of winter triathlon, adaptive snowboard cross and short track speed skating, and Mt Hutt and Methven township hosted the alpine ski racing Super G and a Big Air. Another innovation was adding an extensive festival programme in Queenstown, Wanaka and Methven, that built a significant off-mountain Games atmosphere. Particularly successful was moving the awards ceremonies downtown to ensure a greater involvement and visibility within the local communities.
Once again we received a high level of international media interest. Fifteen television programmes were distributed internationally, media uptake of Games images was double that of 2009 and our own social media marketing came of age. We do, though, still have some work to do within New Zealand to increase media understanding and interest in snow and ice sports.
We continue to receive excellent support from our commercial sponsors, the New Zealand Government, the regional tourism organisations and the many Trusts that provided grants. In the current international economic climate it is encouraging that our partners continued to support the Games and helped ensure that we remain financially strong.
My thanks, as chairman, go to those financial supporters and to Snow Sports NZ, the Federation Internationale du Ski, Ticket to Ride (TTR), the Association of Free Ski Professionals (AFP), the International Paralympics Committee (IPC), the World Curling Federation, the International Triathlon Union and the Ice Skating Union for their critical support in delivering high-quality athlete-focused competitions.
Finally my thanks goes to the many volunteers who help deliver the Winter Games events, sometimes in very trying conditions and at unsociable times of the day or night. Their names have been included in this report in recognition. A special acknowledgement goes to Board member Chris Doig, who passed away after the Winter Games. His contribution to the Games was deeply valued by us all.
Now let us focus on 2013 when the 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games will be held just six months prior to the Sochi Winter Olympics – an opportunity for the world to come, train, compete, and push the boundaries once again.
Sir Eion Edgar.

MEDIA:Media AccreditationThere were almost 200 accredited media from fourteen countries: Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland and the USA). These were a mixture of journalists, photographers, videographers and TV production companies.
RADIOMediaworks was again the radio partner for the Winter Games. Mediaworks utilised five station brands on a network basis and local stations in Dunedin, Queenstown and Christchurch to deliver a comprehensive promotional campaign. In addition there were a number of special initiatives:
The Edge – The Edge are very much youth focussed delivering the biggest audience in New Zealand of 10 – 34 year olds. For two weeks The Edge Drive Show ran a Network promotion offering the listeners a chance to attend the Snowboard Half Pipe World Cup. There were live crosses and attendance by The Edge for the Half Pipe and the Closing Ceremony. Internet promotion on theedge.co.nz.
LiveSPORT – In conjunction with Prime TV and The Crowd Goes Wild, LiveSPORT gave a way a trip for two to attend the Winter Games in Queenstown. For the final week of the Games LiveSPORT broadcast live from Queenstown supported by credits during every news bulletin throughout the day. Internet promotion on radiolivesport.co.nz.
The Rock – Offered listeners the chance to win a trip to the Methven Big Air.Provided the mcs for the Big Air. This promotion was hugely popular. The Rock also focussed on the ice hockey. Internet promotion on therock.net.nz.
More FM - Queenstown and Wanaka focussed promotion on curling and the downtown activities. Dunedin promoted the figure skating, speed skating and the Comedy Roadshow.
RadioLIVE – Internet promotion on radiolive.co.nz.
In addition to marketing activity across the MediaWorks stable of outlets, the following editorial coverage was received:
Interviews on Radio Sport, Radio New Zealand National, Radio Wanaka and Newstalk ZB.
PRINT MEDIAA total of 183,586 sq cm of coverage including 580 images was received from New Zealand media with a circulation of 23,852,388 generating an approximate 57,245,731 editorial hits.
There was still a strong focus on South Island newspapers although there was an increase in the combined national/North Island coverage over 2009 event. Coverage by the NZ Herald, Herald on Sunday, Sunday News and Sunday Star Times was improved with a total of 19 articles. The breakdown is as follows:
14% North Island14% National72% South Island
Throughout the coverage the key messaging of the Games was communicated successfully with a mix of results, editorial and profile driven stories. The Sunday Star Times ran a series of four competitions throughout June and July offering readers the opportunity to win trips to the Methven, Dunedin, Queenstown and Wanaka. More than 5,000 entries were received.
News agenciesA number of stories were generated via the NZPA Newswire and Associated Press, especially amongst NZ regional titles. It is likely that international coverage also resulted from this channel.
InternationalCoverage tracked in online versions of international print media suggests that coverage is widespread but the difficulty of obtaining clippings makes exact measurement difficult. We know that publications as varied as the Australian Financial Times, the Adelaide Advertiser and the New York Times produced articles and/or images from the Games.
ONLINE COVERAGEThe event received extensive online media coverage. A Google search for Winter Games New Zealand returns over seven million listings making an in depth analysis beyond the scope of this summary.
The top 10 listings on searching on Google.com are:1. Official Winter Games site
2. Tourism New Zealand web site
3. ESPN
4. Eventfinder
5. Site promoting SmartPhone app
6. World Curling Federation site
7. Apple iTunes for iPhone app
8. Various videos – YouTube and Freecaster
9. Wikipedia
10. Outside Magazine (USA)
The above snapshot shows the diversity of coverage received and that it was not restricted to specialist winter sports sites only. The following diverse selection of sites where editorial coverage, rather than posted press releases, was received further enforces this:
• New York Times
• Sydney Morning Herald
• The Telegraph
• Channel 5 – USA
• CNN
• Thefirstpost.co.uk (The Week)
• Transworld Snowboarding
• Denver Post
• Newschoolers
• ESPN
• Downdays

• Beehive (NZ Government)
• India Times
SOCIAL MEDIAA strong emphasis was put on social media this year. The number of Twitter followers more than doubled to 462 and the number of Facebook followers, also more than doubled to 2,857.
Key elements of the campaign included four teaser videos that were posted once a week in the four week leading up to the Games featuring some of the sports’ top names and profiling the Winter Games venues. Each episode received between 1,000 and 4,000 views.
During Winter Games a dedicated staff member blogged, took images and regularly updated all social media feeds. Post views on Facebook during the length of the Games topped at 717,593. Destination Queenstown also produced pre-Games teaser for the web and Michael Hill Watches produced a series of video clips during the Games for the internet. Leveraging of the games by sponsors and partners was considerably more than in 2009.
The main demographic interacting with the social media was male aged between18-24 (24%) followed by male aged between 25-24 (18%).
TELEVISIONFor 2011 Kinetic Media was contracted to produce 15 highlights programmes (12x half hour and 3x one hour) during the Winter Games as well as daily video news releases (VNRs). These were broadcast by our host broadcaster, Sky Television, daily at 9pm on Sky Sport 3 with repeats the following day on Sky Sports 1 and 2. The programmes were also repeated on the Sky Highlights Channel in a rotating format.

Global CoverageNew Zealand News was commissioned to maximise and monitor the international television coverage. New Zealand News states that the 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games 2011 has, without doubt, a higher profile than 2009. The VNRs proved to be highly successful with many broadcasters adding the content to their libraries for future use.
.Feedback has also been that the production was very good and content visually appealing.
Coverage of the event was delivered to broadcasters and on-line media outlets in one of two ways.
1. FTP server: Daily highlights of key events with associated shot list.
2. Satellite: Sports news b-roll package with associated script and shot list.

On-line distributionIn addition to providing the above broadcasters with daily VNR updates, a wider notification was also sent to the World Television on-line sports media database. This achieved some success as detailed below. During the course of monitoring the on-line results, a number of websites have been picked up that appear to feature the Winter Games as a result of other PR around the event. Rather than exclude these, they have been left in the reporting to ensure they are not missed.

IMAGE DOWNLOADSOnce again we worked with Getty Images which allowed us to gain coverage in publications outside our expected reach e.g. New York Times, The Week and CNN. Just over 6,800 images were downloaded over the course of the Games by 174 publications in 37 countries. The largest number of images was downloaded by media in the USA, followed by New Zealand then Australia.
These download details do not take into account that all images taken at Winter Games 2011 were also distributed to Getty Images customers by their “live FTP” and “API” services. The Live Feed service is the most popular way of media clients receiving Getty images, but it is impossible to account for the volume of images downloaded from this service.

The factors that affect media interest include the profile of competitors, country range of competitors, the opening days were large as media focussed on a new event. Towards the final days of the Games the media were starting to increase their Rugby World Cup coverage.
Noticeably the web sites have a larger appetite for images than ever before, we have improved our deliver mechanism online allow easier access to images, Getty Images increased database, greater international media awareness of Winter Games, greater range of athletes images available, countries participating, and sports.

THE DOWNTOWN Most successful was the move to hold the award ceremonies for the snow sports down town in Wanaka, Queenstown and Methven at the end of each day. These Central Lakes Trust Award Ceremonies proved to be a very well received and we plan to expand on this concept in 2013.
We were also encouraged by the success of the Winter Games managed events and will look to grow these in 2013. Showing most promise were:
• Kia Figure Skating Gala Performance• NZOne Skydive Adventure Film Festival• AJ Hackett Bungy Adventure Expo• Jucy Winter Games Meltdown Concert
In addition, we partnered with key events that had the potential to add to the total atmosphere and entertainment provided for visitors to the Winter Games. The large crowds attracted to these events added significantly to the downtown atmosphere of the Winter Games.
• Parklife Invitational Rail Jam - Queenstown• Octagon Rail Jam - Dunedin• Methven Big Air• Methven Heritage Centre Grand Opening of the NZ Alpine & Agriculture Encounter• Queenstown Beer Festival
An extensive Downtown Sessions was introduced this year, to complementthe sports competitions, with the following objectives:
• Provide quality entertainment and activities for visitors and locals in order to attract a broader range of participation in the Winter Games
• Develop a unique environment for athletes and encourage their interaction with spectators• Help develop the Winter Games name by increasing its brand presence through the use of
festival type events• Provide additional income for the Winter Games through ticket sales and sponsorship
ECONOMIC BENEFITSThe economic benefit to New Zealand from the training and competition opportunities provided in Otago and New Zealand from snow sports is significant but the following results are purely for the additional benefit provided by hosting the Winter Games NZ.
Competitors, Team Management To gauge the direct expenditure by competitors and team management an on line survey was undertaken. The event attracted 1,390 competitors, team management and media with 85% of these from overseas. Around 71% of these visitors indicated that they had travelled to the regions primarily to attend the Games. This equates to 896 visitors. The average length of stay during the Games was 11.4 days. The total average length of stay of participants before, during and after the event was 16.7 days.
Expenditure results from the survey were variable with a low daily average spend of $99 per day compared with $299 in 2009. The results below therefore show a spread that allow for a 25% variation in the daily spend.
Including the impact before and after the event, the direct expenditure from those directly associated with the event is estimated to be up to $12.86m, while total value added estimate could be as much as $6.16m.

WINTER GAMES NZ TOURISM MARkETING:For 2011 marketing was undertaken to attract additional visitors from Australia and from outside the Otago and Canterbury regions. The difficult international economic conditions, the Canterbury earthquake and the Rugby World Cup have combined to make 2011 a dif-ficult year for non-RWC tourism. The late finalisation of the full Games programme also meant that there were very few Winter Games travel packages developed and so monitor-ing the number of visitors has proved too difficult. It is clear, though, that the number of visitors to Otago and Canterbury specifically for the Winter Games fell well short of target.
Though no estimates of economic impact from these Games tourists, anecdotal evidence and on site surveys would indicate that the total number of additional visitors would at least match the competitor and team support numbers. The Games tourist generally stayed for at least 6 days with surveys indicating that 40% being in the area for 6-10 days.
Level of SatisfactionThere was a high level of satisfaction among participants, with 82% of those surveyed indicating that they were very satisfied (23%) or satisfied (59%) with the overall event. Team Managers were 100% and the media 88% extremely satisfied or satisfied. These are all very encouraging and positive results.
Games Awareness, Interest and Perceived ImpactA nationwide survey of 1,000 New Zealanders aged between 16-64 years showed that 15% of people were aware of the 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games with 34% interested in at-tending the Winter Games. This climbed to 67% of snow sports fans so there is a ready market for the Games. There was also strong support for the Games with over half (55%) agreeing that hosting the Winter Games definitely will improve the image of New Zealand internationally and 50% agreeing that the Winter Games definitely will increase Kiwi’s sense of pride.
Interestingly, the snow sports stars like Jossi and Byron Wells, Shelly Gotlieb and Janina Kuzma had a level of awareness ( 14.0 – 18.0%) that was similar to Ryan Nelson, Sarah walker, Bevan Docherty and Jessie Ryder. Also, prior to the Winter Games, the level of interest in the Games (13%) compared very favourably with Netball ANZ Championship (17%), NBL Basketball (15%) and National Bank Cricket Series (14%).
The 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games is poised to become a centre piece of New Zealand sport.
