The Manitoba results show 1,208,268 persons counted in the Census last May, up 59,867 (5.2%) from the 2006 count. This compares to an increase of 28,818 persons (2.6%) over the previous census period (2001 to 2006).

The Indian reserves Brokenhead 4 and Dauphin River 48A were Incompletely Enumerated in the 2011 Census, and as such, their population counts are not included in the Manitoba total. According to the 2006 Census, these two First Nations communities had 467 and 84 residents, respectively.

In terms of percentage growth between 2006 and 2011, the following non-First Nation communities were the fastest growing: the town of Niverville (43.7%), the RM of La Broquerie (42.1%), the town of Lac du Bonnet (31.6%), the RM of Stanley (31.2%) and the village of St-Pierre-Jolys (31.0%).

With respect to change in population count between 2006 and 2011, most of the growth occurred in Winnipeg, Brandon, Steinbach, Winkler and their surrounding municipalities. These four cities accounted for 64.7% of Manitoba’s total growth and the city of Winnipeg alone accounted for just over half (50.4%) of the provincial increase.

There were 663,617 residents in the city of Winnipeg according to the May 2011 Census, an additional 30,166 people or 4.8% compared to the 2006 Census.Increasing by 489 residents, or 17.9%, the RM of Headingley also experienced a growth in population over the 2006 count, reaching 3,215 people in 2011.

Aside from the city of Winnipeg, Brandon, Steinbach and Winkler, along with their surrounding municipalities, drove much of the growth in southern Manitoba.Following the city of Winnipeg, Brandon had the second largest increase in Manitoba at 4,550 people, or 11.0%. The city of Steinbach increased by 2,458 residents, or 22.2%, while the surrounding RM of Hanover increased by 2,155, or 18.2%. Similarly, the city of Winkler grew by 1,564 (17.2%) and the surrounding RM of Stanley increased by 1,989, or 31.2%.

Growth in the Interlake region was driven mainly by the rural municipalities of St. Clements (up 799, or 8.2%), West St. Paul (up 575, or 13.2%) and St. Andrews (up 516, or 4.5%). The city of Selkirk increased by 319, or 3.4%, to reach 9,834 residents in 2011.

In Southwestern Manitoba, growth was dominated by Brandon which increased by 4,550 people, or 11.0%. The majority of the remaining communities and rural municipalities either recorded weak growth or a decline.

The North Central region of Manitoba, which includes the city of Portage la Prairie, reported an overall increase. The RM of Macdonald (up 627, or 11.1%), the city of Portage la Prairie (up 268, or 2.1%) and the RM of St. Francois Xavier (up 153, or 14.1%) were behind most of this growth.

The Parklands region was the only region to record a decrease in population count relative to the 2006 Census. The largest decreases were recorded in the RMs of Swan River (down 228, or 8.2%), Alonsa (down 176, or 12.2%) and Shell River (down 135, or 11.1%). Population increases were recorded in some areas though, such as the city of Dauphin (up 345, or 4.4%), the Indian reserve of Ebb and Flow 52 (up 108, or 9.1%) and the town of Roblin (up 102, or 6.1%).

Northern communities on the western border and in the far North reported the largest losses. In particular, the city of Thompson decreased by 617, or 4.6%, between 2006 and 2011. The Indian reserve of Norway House 17, however, recorded an increase of 687 residents (16.9%), compared to the 2006 Census.

In total, the greatest amount of growth occurred in cities (up 38,822 people or 5.2% to 783,145). Rural municipalities followed with an increase of 10,201 residents, or 4.1%, and the count for Indian reserves and settlements rose by 6,449, or 11.2%. Between 2006 and 2011 the total count in the remaining areas (towns, villages, local government districts and unorganized areas) increased by 4,395 persons or 4.5%.

According to the Census 64.8% of total provincial growth could be attributed to cities. This is the same as the proportion of Manitoban’s living in cities in May 2006. Rural municipalities contained 21.4% of Manitoba’s total population in May 2006, yet contributed 17.0% to the total provincial growth. Conversely, the share of Manitoba’s population living on Indian reserves and settlements was 5.3%, however this population accounted for 10.8% of total growth.

It should be noted that these numbers are the first of a series of data releases from the 2011 Census. Over the next 12 months, Statistics Canada will release further information (such as age, sex, marital status and language) from the Census. The next data from the 2011 Census covering population by age and sex will be available on May 29, 2012.

The numbers released today are Census counts and not population estimates.Over the next 18 months, Statistics Canada will be preparing estimates of the number of people missed by the Census. These undercoverage estimates will then be added to the Census counts to determine the population estimates based on the 2011 Census.
