from

The Rt. Rev. Sean W. Rowe, Bishop

Over the course of the

past year, the Cathedral

has made a few critical

decisions with regard to

thinking strategically

about the future. The

decision to enter a

carefully designed and

implemented

discernment process is an important first

step toward a sustainable and mission

focused future.

from

The Very Rev. John P. Downey, Dean

Among the many

accomplishments of

2011 for the

Cathedral, perhaps the

most significant is the

agreement to work

with the Episcopal

Church Foundation on

strategic thinking and

financial resources as we move toward our

centennial as a cathedral in 2015. This

should help us address the two realities we

continue to juggle - our growing and

younger congregation and the fact that the

way we are funding our life and mission is

not sustainable over the long term.

from

The Rev. Evan G. Clendenin, Curate

1. As I have been

learning, so to I hope

that faithful learning

opportunities will be

offered back to you in

ways that will "satisfy

and delight us."

Discern a learning goal

for yourself and for the

community, and share it with a partner.

2. Music and Food seem to be places where

this congregation meets itself and our

neighbors: Food Pantry, Outreach

Dinner, RSCM, worship and concerts.

How can these communities of word and

table be extended to those we know and

do not know in our neighborhoods?

from

Sharon Downey, Canon Musician

A year of preparation

and anticipation

culminating with a

weekend of travel,

learning, prayer and

singing best describes

2011 for the

Cathedral Choirs and

their family members.

Included in the journey were members of

the Rite 13 Class and others from the

congregation creating not only a stronger

connection between all of us but a strong

spiritual connection to the National

Cathedral as a “house of prayer for all

people.”

from

Carol Bliss, Sr. Warden

This past year we have

experienced, attended

and lived through

many exciting events.

The welcoming of a

Curate who is now an

ordained priest, a

road trip to the

Nation’s Capitol to

sing at the Washington Nat’l Cathedral

and a much expanded Christmas Pageant

to mention a few. We successfully rented

the Hoskinson House and watched as the

stock market continued to remind us that

we are to be vigilant in the legacy that has

been left. In the coming year, we will be

challenged through a process of

discernment which will provide us with a

better vision of the Cathedral and the

talents that lie within.

There is much enthusiasm and intelligence

in the family of St Paul’s and the energy

that is seen is what will carry this church

into the future as a noted faith based

community that is rich in tradition and

beliefs, all the while proclaiming the good

news of Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.

from

Sean Heasley, Jr. Warden

It was my pleasure to

serve as the Junior

Warden this year. Many

projects kept me busy.

These included the

repairs to the Cathedral

roof and the inspection

of the stained glass

windows. We also

undertook some lighting projects this year

as well. I will be devoting my time and

energies next year to working on our long-

range planning discernment process with

the folks from the Episcopal Church

Foundation and am looking forward to

seeing that process through.

from

Cass Shimek, Cathedral Administrator

As I reflect back on my

first year here, three

words come to mind:

Belonging (that amazing

sense of inclusiveness

and welcoming),

Becoming (actively

participating in the

shaping of the Cathedral’s future), and

Being (the knowledge and experience that

God is here everyday, all day, 24/7,

working in the lives of the all who are a

part of the life of the Cathedral).

from

AJ Noyes, Christian Education & Formation

Assistant

I was thrilled to return

to the staff of the

Cathedral in August of

2011 as the Christian

Education and

Formation Assistant.

Our focus in Sunday

school and other events

has been the "Learning Our Promised

Place" program - a curriculum that

emphasizes a basic knowledge of the Bible,

our church, worship and liturgical

information as well as a call to put faith

into action. Averaging 17 students in our

Sunday School class and with more than

30 in attendance at the Advent event on

November 30, the program is thriving and

we look forward to a great 2012.
