Waste facts• Canadians produce more garbage per person than

just about any other country in the world. The average

person in Ontario generates a ton of trash a year

• It takes 19 full grown trees to make one ton of paper.By recycling 54 kilograms of newspapers, you can save

the equivalent of one tree from being cut down.

Canadians are among the world’s largest consumers

of paper products.

• Each Canadian throws away about half a kilogram

of packaging per day

• Recycled plastic can be made into almost anything.

The carpet in your living room could contain the

plastic from more than 800 plastic 2 litre bottles.

• A recycled glass bottle gets used again in a few

weeks. A glass bottle in the garbage never gets

reused.

• Recycling an aluminum can cuts energy by 95%.

That means 24 recycled cans in your refrigerator

took less energy to make than 2 new ones.• Recycling saves water! It takes 90 litres of water to

create 1 kilogram of newsprint. Recycled newsprint

takes half as much water to produce.



We Left it Behind Because…Most common reasons for MISSED collections are:

• Items not out before 7:00am

• Items are obstructed by vehicles, snow banks, etc.

• Items are not placed at curbside

• Materials not scheduled (garbage/yard waste)

Most common reasons for REFUSED collections are:

Materials not set out properly; overweight items weight exceeds 50lbs (22kg)

• too many bags/containers placed at the curb

• oversized or unacceptable containers

• materials not accepted in recycle/composting/yard waste collection

• non-collectable material (i.e. hazardous waste, construction/renovation waste)

• items not bundled or prepared properly (see page 17)

There are a number of reasons why materials may be left behind by our

collection crew. Although this may be upsetting, it is important to remember

that there is often a good reason when materials are not collected.

to reduce waste through the 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle).

Yard WasteYard Waste is collected EVERY SECOND MONDAY fromApril to November, as noted throughout this calendar(there are some exceptions due to statutory holidays).

There is no limit on the amount of yard waste that can be placed

for collection, providing that acceptable containers are used.

A “yard waste” sticker must be placed on the open rigid containers

used for yard waste and the stickers may be picked up at the

Civic Centre.

Acceptable Containers:

Place weeds, plant trimmings and leaves inpaper yard bags or any rigid open top container

that has handles. Bundle branches as shown.

Mow SmartReduce the growth of weeds by cutting your grass less often. Keeping the lawbetween 6 and 8 cm (2½ to 3 inches) high blocks out the light weeds need togerminate. Consider a push mower. Push mowers cut grass blades cleanly,making your lawn healthier and more pest resistant. They’re also better for

It takes 1 million years for glass to break down naturally; it takes approximately 12 weeks for a glass container to be recycled into a new

product. Cigarettes and their filters, which leach more than 160 toxic chemicals, are among the most common litter found in our waterways.

It takes two to five months for paper to biodegrade; five years for a plastic-coated paper cartons; up to 12 years for cigarette butts;

50 to 100 years for tin cans; 200-500 years for aluminum cans; and one million years for a styrofoam container or plastic jug.

What Goes in the Green Bin?Food and food scraps

If you can eat it, it goes in the Green Bin. Meat and fish bones and shells, fat, grease

and lard (solidified), small amounts of cooking oil, baking supplies, dairy products,

egg shells, coffee filters/grounds and tea bags, corn cobs/husks and nuts/shells.

Soiled or shredded paper

Shredded paper may be placed in the Green Bin in small amounts. Other paper prod-

ucts that go in the Green Bin include; butcher and cheese paper, moulded pulp take-

out trays, ice cream boxes, microwave popcorn bags, flour and sugar bags, muffin

paper, paper cups and plates, paper towels and tissues, paper serviettes, paper candy

wrappers and any paper or cardboard that contains food residue (sauce, cheese, etc.).

NO waxed paper.

Personal Care items

Diapers, hair, nail clippings, sanitary products, tampons, incontinence products, tissues.

Pet products

Animal bedding, pet waste, kitty litter, bird seed, pet food, pet fur,

feathers and sawdust (wood sources only).

Houseplants and flowers (no yard waste)

Green Bin Tip: Lining your Green Bin with compostable bags instead of plastic

bags will help the environment. Look for the “certified compostable” bag logo.

There is no limit to the number of times an aluminum container can be recycled, making it one of themost successful examples of sustainable packaging. You can make 20 aluminum pop cans out of recycledmaterial with the same amount of energy it takes to make one new aluminum pop can.

The international recycling sign (the 3 arrows forming a triangle) is called the mobius loop.
