Illegal Dumping Hurts
Dumping waste in the woods and waterways is a serious matter.
Not only is it illegal and unsightly, it hurts! The everyday items we throw away can contain many toxic elements and chemicals. As the garbage begins to break down, it will eventually saturate into the ground and could pollute the surrounding soil and groundwater. Depending on geology, hydrology, topography and other factors, the pollution may affect the immediate area or may spread to areas further away.
Illegal dumping is never OK, whether in the woods, on the fields, or in someone’s dumpster. Dispose of items properly and legally – at curbside, during spring and fall clean-ups, the Management Centres in Kentville and Lawrencetown or other licensed privately run sites.
Know your options, and there’s no need for excuses.
If it’s not alright to dump it here ... What makes it fine to dump it here?

Nearly 14 years ago, Valley Waste delivered green carts to the Valley. It took a bit of time, but composting food waste has become second nature in Kings and Annapolis Counties - something to be very proud of.
Each year, Northridge Farms in Dempsey’s Corner processes over 10,000 metric tonnes of Valley organics into a rich soil amendment called compost – that’s 10,000 tonnes of food that used to take up space in the landfill.
The biggest challenge with processing this volume of material is contamination. Unfortunately, plastics, metal, glass and garbage are still ending up in green carts on a daily basis. These are all items that can damage machinery at the composting facility and even ruin the finished product.
Before you chuck it – check it! Green carts are only for compostable organics, i.e. food waste, yard waste and soiled paper. Please call us toll free at 1-877-927-8300 if you are unsure whether an item is compostable
No Plastics, Please!
Try wrapping food waste in newspaper or boxboard to keep odours down in your green cart. Never use plastic bags, they don’t break down and they contaminate the compost.
Tip!
Pieces of plastic in the finished compost.

Many Valley residents generate medical waste on a daily basis. It’s critically important that all medical waste is disposed of properly to prevent injury and exposure to collection staff.
Most medical waste goes in the garbage – very little can be recycled or composted. Despite this, workers at both recycling and compost facilities continue to find medical waste in blue bags and green carts. Many people handle waste after collection and we need everyone’s help to keep staff safe.
Medical Waste At Home
If you are having trouble meeting garbage bag limits at your home due to your medical waste, please contact us. We may be able to help.

What Happens To Our StuffHave you ever wondered what happens to your garbage after it’s collected from your driveway? Does it simply go “away”? All garbage in Kings and Annapolis Counties is sent to landfill at the Kaizer Meadow Landfill in the Municipality of Chester.
Landfills have come a long way. Over 100 dumps and opening burning sites have been replaced with seven state-of-the-art landfills in Nova Scotia. Each landfill is designed to minimize the air, water and soil pollution created from our garbage. The landfills of today offer a safer, cleaner method of disposal than decades ago.
Believe it or not, food waste causes pollution in landfills. Garbage in a landfill is compacted which causes food waste to decompose anaerobically. This decomposition creates both liquids and greenhouse gases. The liquid mixes with rainwater and chemicals to create “leachate” that has the potential to harm surrounding soil and groundwater.

One of the common complaints we hear at Valley Waste is that bags were left behind . Mistakes sometimes happen but usually there’s a very simple explanation.
Out late. Have your bags out before 8:00 am. The collectors try to maintain the same route but, for countless reasons, they may have to change their course and arrive at a road much earlier than usual. Play it safe and have it out by 8:00 am.
Too many bags. Did you put out more than one solid colour garbage bag? More than four garbage bags? The last page of this calendar contains detailed bag limits and packaging of waste information.
Not sorted or packaged properly. Did your garbage bag contain food waste or recyclables? Did the green cart have plastic shopping bags inside? Make sure you’re recycling and composting all you can. In Nova Scotia, certain items are banned from landfill and can’t be put in the garbage.
Too heavy/ too large. The collectors do their best to take all waste but sometimes items are just too big to collect. Be sure that bags weigh less than 15KG and green carts weigh less than 100 KG.
Inaccessible. Many circumstances can block a driver’s access to bags - snow drifts, parked cars, unsafe terrain, locked storage bins. Be sure that what you set out is accessible and clearly visible to the driver.
