Welcome to Cashmere’s annual celebration, Founders’ Days! This special weekend is full of exciting festivities for the whole family. I would like to start by introduc-ing myself. My name is Chelsea Stubbs, Queen Cashmere. I am accompanied by Mayra Hurtado and Ariel Lynch, princesses of Cashmere. We would like to give you a warm welcome to our home, Cashmere!

Founders’ Days is our town celebration and we would like to invite everybody to come! Grow-ing up in Cashmere, Founders Days has always been a summer highlight for me. From the ping pong ball drop, to browsing at the vendors shops set up, dancing in the streets to live bands, and who could forget the annual parade Saturday evening! Cashmere’s Founders’ Days is more than just

great entertainment and shop-ping, it’s a chance for the people of Cashmere to come together and appreciate this small town for what it truly is: a family.

Cashmere would like to invite everyone, from far to near, to come dance, play, laugh, and help celebrate our Founders’ Days. I hope to see everyone at the Apple Annie Grand Parade downtown Saturday evening, where the Cashmere, Washington com-munity float will be swingin’ and swayin’ with records playing as we all dance in the streets!

Ariel, Mayra and I will be giv-ing a smile and a wave to you all, as everybody does in this friendly town.

Sincerely, Chelsea StubbsQueen Cashmere

Welcome to Cashmere! On be-half of my fellow board members and local businesses, I’m proud to welcome you to Cashmere and to Founders’ Days.

The Cashmere Chamber of Commerce is 100 members strong, and has been organizing Founders’ Days since the “dia-mond jubilee” of our town back in 1979. We’ve grown over the last 32 years from a one-day festival to a weekend of community events.

In addition to putting on Found-ers’ Days, your chamber is deeply involved in promoting all that Cashmere’s business community has to offer, and I encourage you to drop in on some of our local businesses and give them your support. You’ll also find many exciting new businesses in our area, so if you haven’t shopped or dined in Cashmere lately, you’re in for a surprise!

On behalf of the chamber and the Founders’ Days organizing committee, I particularly want to thank the many generous busi-nesses who have contributed to this year’s event.

Something old. Something new.Treasures waiting for you!

The Cashmere Museum and Pioneer Village has chosen the family of Archibald and Louisa Smith as the 2010 Founding Family. Their descendents will be celebrated at events through-out Founders’ Days weekend.

Archibald Frederick Smith was born in Danglingworth, England to railroad worker William Smith and his wife, Matilda. He was one of seven children, and as the family grew, they were to find that making a living in England in the latter part of the 19th century would prove very difficult. Knowing what a toll the physical labor took on his father, Archie de-cided to look to the new world to make his way, and hearing of the opportunities in North America, he saved up for steer-age passage to Canada on the Old Dominion Line.

Packing up his worldly goods, he bade a tearful farewell to his

family and sailed in 1894. How-ever, the depression set off by the “Panic of 1893” resulted in widespread unemployment. The 17-year-old moved from Nova Scotia to Manitoba, working here and there, until he reached British Columbia. Though jobs there were plentiful, the young Archie Smith learned of job opportunities and the scenic beauty of the Wenatchee Val-ley and arrived with little more than a blanket roll.

He quickly found work chop-ping cordwood for the paddle-wheel boats which carried cargo and passengers up and down the Columbia River. Archie worked in the small settlement of Colockum, and it was here that he met his future bride, the tall, redheaded Louisa Hamil-ton. Her father, John, emigrated to the states from Ireland as an indentured servant, working off his indebtedness to an em-

ployer in Minnesota, where the young Louisa was born. In the late 1890s the Great Northern Railroad, hoping to entice more settlers to the northwest, of-fered emigrants low train fares to Washington state, and John

Hamilton’s family may well have taken advantage of the offer to move west. They settled in the small mission village that later would be known as Cashmere.

Archie, on his days off from cutting wood for the steam ship companies, explored a newly-opened road from Colockum to Wenatchee, continuing on to Leavenworth. He explored the valley from one end to the other, looking for the perfect homestead, coming to settle along a new irrigation project

in Peshastin. He quit his job and threw himself into the new ir-rigation project along Peshastin creek. After the ditch’s comple-tion, he hired on as one of the first “ditch walkers,” a job not without its perils: once he was caught in a “wash out” when the flooding waters broke out of their banks and cascaded down the mountains.

While Archie worked on new-er, larger irrigation projects, he

It’s not all about sitting on the sidelines watching the parade go by. Cashmere is at the center of outstanding recreation op-portunities, and the following Founders’ Days events suggest a variety of ways to get fit, have fun, and work up an appetite.

CHS Dodgeball Tournament

Made popular in recent years by Hollywood cinema, Dodgeball is an easy sport popular from

elementary schools to Japan, and organized recreational leagues are even getting into the act.

This year the Cashmere High School ASB Club invites teams of five with a sixth person alternate, to register for the Founders’ Days Dodgeball Tournament, starting at 10 a.m. on Friday. Teams can be seventh grade to adult, and appropriate costumes or team uniforms are encouraged.

Bike with BrianBike with Brian, now in its

sixth year, takes peddles away from Riverside Park at 8 a.m. Saturday morning.

Ride organizer Brian Webb, who has cerebral palsy, founded the ride as a fundraiser for the Cashmere Schools Foundation, and has awarded thousands in scholarships since 2005.

This year’s bike ride offers several routes, all departing from the Riverside Community Center at Riverside Park in Cash-mere. The easiest is a three-mile route downstream along the Wenatchee River. A 10-mile route takes riders farther downstream

to Monitor. The 25-mile ride tra-verses Old Monitor Road, Sleepy Hollow and Lower Sunnyslope Road, turning around at the sce-nic Ohme Gardens. Finally, for those who love a challenge, the 50-mile loop adds a jaunt to the Peshastin Pinnacles along North Dryden Road to Dryden, then finally back to Cashmere to take in the rest of the festival.

Webb stresses safety first: riders should have their bikes tuned up beforehand, and all riders must wear an ANSI, CPSC or Snell-approved bicycle helmet and obey all traffic laws.

Registration for the ride is $30 and includes a T-shirt. Forms are available at the Chamber office or by contacting Brian Webb, Box 776 Cashmere, WA 98815,

[email protected]. Late registration on the day of the ride is available starting at 7:30 a.m.

Founders’ Days Golf Tournament

Golfers of every skill level are invited to the Mt. Cashmere Golf Course, located near the Chelan County Expo Center, on Sunday, June 27. Style is two man best ball. There will be a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The $40 per player entry fee includes 18 holes, barbecue lunch, closest to the pin and the longest putt (golf cart rental not included, and payment prior to the tournament is appreciated).

Field is limited to the first 52 paid entries. For information and reservations call (509) 782-1207.

As you can see by the 2010 Royalty portrait, our girls went “glitzy” this year! Those dress-es really get your attention! Of course it was quite a challenge to photograph and print images that truly capture the feeling of the theme.

The dresses and crowns are so sparkly a traditional expo-sure would never work – any automated meter would say the scene was much brighter than it truly was. Luckily the girls chose to have their publicity portraits done in the studio this year, so we got to work with our

computerized lighting system. It really gave us a dynamic image!

Also the girls did not want to wear their sashes with their names on them – it just didn’t seem to fit the style of the por-trait. So we used some digital magic and included their names on the border of the portrait. The result is a beautiful image that I am very pleased with. Everyone seems to enjoy it and we are very proud to support our Royalty in this way.

The 2010 Royalty image is being distributed to businesses and individuals who generously support the Cashmere Float As-sociation.

Janet DrewPacific Northwest singer and

songwriter Janet Drew will per-form two free concerts over Found-ers’ Days, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Cashmere Cider Mill and 7 p.m. Sunday at the Cashmere United Methodist Church.

Janet Drew has a voice that has often been described as angelic. With lyrics that reach straight to the heart, the combination of her voice and beautiful musical arrangements pack a powerful emotional impact.

Drew’s latest CD, This Road, is her most ambitious and per-sonal recording to date. It pairs the instant familiarity of her voice with pop/country, bluegrass and emotive ballad arrangements of 13 original songs. Lyrical themes range from memoirs of home and family to the hope and struggle of everyday life.

Prior to This Road, Drew re-leased her first two recordings – Boundless and Starlight. Bound-less offers a collection of original

songs, contemporary songs of wor-ship and timeless hymns. Acoustic guitar and piano driven arrange-ments come to life with Celtic and folk inspired percussion, violin, pennywhistle and accordion.

Starlight is a seven-song Christ-mas album featuring treasured

songs of the season along with two new Christmas originals. Celtic and Appalachian influences weave their way through beautiful songs - from simple to symphonic in style and instrumentation.

Preview Janet’s music at www.janetdrewmusic.com.

Ravin’wolfRavin’wolf is set to perform

from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Cashmere Cider Mill. The concert is a free outdoor all ages event in conjunction with Founder’s Days. Donations for the band are wel-comed. The concert is outdoors and seating is on the lawn, so bring blankets and folding chairs. Ravin’wolf is touring in promo-tion of their new CD, “Live at the Columbia City Theater.” For full Ravin’wolf calendar updates visit their website at www.ravinwolf.com.

Tucked away in the sacred canyons of Central Washington State, where Seattle meets the Sage, is found Ravin’wolf, one of the Pacific Northwest’s most cap-tivating and in demand acoustic

blues acts. This one of a kind pair slips in and out of the genre with ease to explore the psychedelic edges and defy the boundaries of their blues influences, to take their audience on a raunchy yet mystical journey into Sagebrush Blues...a shotgun wedding of blues rock fusion...and southern back-porch jelly...saddled up next to the pop edge...with an old school delivery.

Originally from the sage-brush in Kittitas County, they are deemed to be the next best ’new find’ on the Seattle blues scene. Ravin’wolf was recently nominated for the “Best of the Blues 2010” Best Blues Solo/Duo Award by the Washington Blues Society of Seattle, and has been submerging themselves in feral blues and non-stop gig-

ging, sharpening their double sided six-string performance to a razor’s edge, honing their live performance together and becoming increasingly familiar as “that male-female duo that defies musical boundaries you’ve just gotta hear!” The Pacific Northwest’s “best kept secret in blues” they tuck themselves into the wild west tourist towns, winery concert venues and festi-vals throughout the year where they are wowing surprised ears and leaving audiences wonder-ing where they’ve been all this time.

Under the vigilant eye of found-ing members Jamey and FaeR-aven, Ravin’wolf has gained cre-ative strength over the past two years with a nomination for the 2010 Independent Music Awards. They are pleased to be enjoying the longevity of their artistry while undertaking a pathway into joint authorship and the publishing world as performing songwriters in the industry. In the years since their formation, they have had the privilege to headline with acts such as Elvin Bishop, Alice Stuart, Nick Viga-rino, Terry Robb, Too Slim and the Taildraggers, Mary McPage and Seattle’s Flowmotion and Deadwood Revival.

Local blues venue Club Crow has two great acts performing Founders’ Days weekend, with no cover charge for the 21 and older crowd. Friday night, Ellensburg band Red Means Go will hit the Crow, followed on Saturday night by Slack Daddy, featuring Crow

co-owner Jack Norris with fellow band members Larry Bagdon, Randy Kesterson, Mike Waters, Dan Sivey, and Phil Biladeau.

Red Means GoIn fall of 2007, Jazmarae Beebe

and Skyler Mehal met in the same dorm hall and decided to play

together. This meeting was the beginning of Jaz and Skyler—which then morphed into Red Means Go.

The singing/songwriting duo’s unique blend of jazz, pop, and indie creates a perfect blend with their piano/guitar-based songs

and their unique voices. They quickly became popular amongst students at Central Washington University and soon were ap-proached by a bass player and a drummer. Tom Noble became their powerhouse drummer and Janss Woldseth became their slapping bassist in the fall of 2008.

Red Means Go adds a new sound to the mix when they plug in, but keep their roots in jazz/pop/indie genre. By winter of 2008, Markus Hoyer added a new depth to their sound with back-up guitar and vocals. Soon after Markus joined, the band went into the studio and recorded their first album.

Float ThemeThis year’s Cashmere Com-

munity Float is “swining’ and swayin’ with records playin’” as they’re Dancing in the Streets.

Queen Chelsea Stubbs and Princesses Mayra Hurtado and Ariel Lynch are dancing through-out the northwest and invite everyone to beautiful Cashmere, where the rivers flow and the apples grow. They began their northwest journey earlier this spring at the Washington State Apple Blossom Festival, and continue at parades throughout Washington and Canada.

Happenings at the Senior Center

The Cashmere Senior Center throws open its doors to artists and quilt fans over Founders’ Days. The Senior Center will host craft tables all weekend, as part of the downtown Cashmere sidewalk sale.

Artist Artie Bowman will be “in action,” painting under the aw-ning in front of the Senior Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Her painting will be raffled off Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Inside the Senior Center, a quilt turning, a display of about 25 quilts from Ruth Gyer’s spring quilt collection, will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, with commentary on techniques used. Goodwill offerings to benefit the Senior Center will be accepted.

For those who want a chance to own a beautiful “log cabin sampler” quilt, the Friends of Old Mission will be on hand selling raffle tickets.

Archie Smith settled in the area before it was named Cashmere. Smith was born in England.

was determined to save enough money to buy his own team of horses to hire out for the backbreaking work. He saved enough money with this scheme to buy 83 acres of timbered land along the Wenatchee River from the Northern Pacific Railroad Company. Using the timber he felled on his new property, he built himself and his family a one-room log cabin.

Archie and Louisa’s family would grow beyond those four walls, but the structure survives to this day in the Cashmere Museum’s Pioneer Village as the General Store.

One of the first signs of Found-ers’ Days is the annual poster contest honoring the year’s cho-sen Founding Family, Archibald Frederick Smith & Louise Ham-ilton Smith.

Organized by the Cashmere Museum and Pioneer Village, the contest features the fourth grade artists of Vale Elementary School. Students were given background on the Smiths, from Archie’s birth in England to his marriage and career as an orchardist and county commissioner. Students also received drawing and poster-making lessons. Some chose to depict the Smith home, built in 1912 in Dryden; others depicted Archibald and Louisa’s wed-ding.

Judges met at the Senor Center and, with the artists’ names hid-

den, selected the winners. Follow-ing selection of the winners, their entries appeared in business windows throughout Cashmere during the first week of June.

Following are this year’s poster contest winners:

First Place: Patricia Alaman-za

Second Place: Samatha Lip-pert

Third Place: William CassHonorable Mention: Rhiannon

Poster Contest Supporters: Penny Brouillette, Cashmere Mu-seum and Pioneer Village, Cash-mere Senior Center Volunteers, Cashmere Valley Bank, Cash-mere Senior Center, Gail Cates and Vale Elementary School.
