30 | AUGUSTANA WOMEN,S BASKETBALL

From its modest origin as a six-team alliance nearly eight decades ago, the NorthernSun Intercollegiate Conference has matured into a 14-team union of upper Midwestcolleges and universities to form arguably the strongest affiliation in NCAA DivisionII.

The NSIC can trace its r oots to 1932 w hen six schools, including Bemidji Sta teUniversity, Minnesota State Uni versity, Mankato, Minnesota State Uni versityMoorhead, St. Cloud State University, University of Minnesota Duluth and WinonaState University signed on as charter members. All remain active subscribers of theleague today.

Southwest Minnesota State University was added in 1969, followed by NorthernState University in 1978, Wayne State College (NE) in 1998, Concordia University-St. Paul and the University of Minnesota, Crookston in 1999, the University of Maryand Upper Iowa University in 2006, and Augustana College, in 2008.

Minnesota State, St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth later left the league to jointhe North Central Conference b ut returned to the NSIC in 2008. University ofMinnesota, Morris and Michigan Tech University were once part of the NSIC familyas well.

In 1992, the NSIC became a true athletic showcase for both men and women withthe merger of the traditional Northern Intercollegiate Conference and the NorthernSun Conference, the home of women’s athletics since 1979.

Before NSIC affiliates became cer tified f or c hampionship competition in theNational Collegiate Athletic Association in 1995, its member institutions filledprominent roles in the Na tional Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).NIC and NSC c lubs annually dispatched qualified student-a thletes to na tionaltournaments and captured several NAIA teams and individual championships.

The NSIC celebrates its 79th season this year and clearly continues to make a majorimprint nationally, winning seven national titles in the last five years. Winona Statemen claimed NCAA II Basketball Championships in 2006 and 2008 and nar rowlymissed a third crown, falling in a last second shot in 2007.In addition, the Warriorsestablished a NCAA II record of 57 consecutive victories.

Concordia University launched an ong oing streak of three consecutive NCAA IIVolleyball Championships in 2007. In 2008 the Golden Bear s won 37 straightmatches after a season opening loss on their way to a second consecutive title andscripted a mar velous encore in 2009 with a perf ect 37-0 finish, a third straightnational crown and a current winning streak of 74 straight matches.

In a most sur prising run, Minnesota Duluth completed a perf ect 15-0 season b ywinning the 2008 NCAA Division II Football Championship. The Bulldogs, limitedto only 24 scholarships by league rule, swept a field of fully-funded teams, includingtop ranked Grand Valley State and number three Northwest Missouri State.Minnesota State added more luster to the league by finishing 32-2 and claiming the2008-09 NCAA II Women’s Basketball Championship. The Mavericks rolled to awild 103-94 victory over Franklin Pierce to set a NCAA r ecord for total points inthe title game.

Since 2000, the NSIC has also par ticipated in Mineral Water Bowl. Hosted by theQuarterback Club of Excelsior Springs, Mo., the Mineral Water Bowl matches thehighest-finishing teams fr om the NSIC and the Mid-America Inter collegiateAthletics Association (MIAA) not selected f or the NCAA Di vision II footballplayoffs. Winona State defeated Missouri Western State, 43-41, in triple overtime, theWarriors, first-ever NCAA II post-season win in 2000.

In addition, NSIC student-athletes have made a major splash na tionally as well, collecting a ba tch of individual titles. Concordia setter Mag gie McNamara washonored as the NCAA Division II Hondo Women’s Athlete of the Year, the latestNSIC representative decorated with national Player of the Year honors. The NSIC has long pr ovided competitive intercollegiate athletic programs for itsmembers and several NSIC athletes have distinguished themselves on a larger stage, including the Olympics, major league baseball, the National Football League andthe National Basketball Association.

Member schools continue to emphasize the educational, entertainment and unifyingvalue of sports while pointing with pride to the man y advantages to be gained byattending these colle ges and uni versities. The NSIC is committed to pr ovidingrewarding experiences for its student-athletes, and while the challenges that loom aresizable, indeed, the NSIC is surely well positioned for the future.
