    STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

MISSIONIt is our mission to physically and mentally prepare the student-athlete for the rigors of collegiate athletics, by implementing professionally designed, scientifi cally sound training programs, designed specifi cally to reduce the incidence of injury and help each team and student-athlete reach their full athletic potential.

PHILOSOPHYWe believe that strength and conditioning is crucial to the complete development of the student-athlete. The philosophy of our strength and conditioning program is based on the belief that what occurs in the weight room and fi eld transfers to the

playing surface. We train sport specifi cally with the goal of enhancing athleticism. We also believe in the importance of work ethic, attitude, accountability and mental toughness and that these qualities can be developed and enhanced through our strength and conditioning program.

At the University of North Dakota, one program, functioning behind the scenes, but which should not be taken lightly, is the strength and conditioning program. The strength and conditioning program at UND is among the fi nest in Division I and vital to the success of all UND athletic teams. The strength and conditioning staff commits themselves to the development of size, strength, power, speed, agility, conditioning, and body composition of each student-athlete. The goal of the strength staff is to develop the athlete and team to reach their maximum potential throughout their career while staying injury free.

Nate Baukol, director of strength and conditioning, oversees the program and facilities. Baukol has three full-time assistant coaches and one graduate assistant coach to assist him.

Together they direct and monitor the training of over 500 student-athletes in 20 sports at UND. UND also boasts some of the fi nest strength training facilities around. The facilities include the Ralph Engelstad Arena weight room, the Memorial Stadium weight room, and the Hyslop Sports Center weight room.

Training has become a year-round activity, with a student athlete spending as much time on physical development as any other part of their sport throughout the year. Student-athletes follow either off -season or in-season programs, which are individualized specifi c to the athlete and sport. Off -season programs are fi ve days a week, summer months included.

Each athlete receives a comprehensive summer training manual to follow, given that a member of the strength staff wont be supervising them. In-season programs are typically 45-minute sessions, two to three days per week, supervised by the strength and conditioning staff .

The Fighting Sioux volleyball program trains at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Centers Brown and Bender Performance Center, which was graciously donated by Mark Brown and David Bender during the 2005-06 season.

    SPORTS MEDICINE

    Dr. Greg GreekTeam Physician

One of the unfortunate aspects of athletics is that injuries do occur. However, every student-athlete from UND athletic teams are under excellent care thanks to the UND Divison of Sports Medicine and its umbrella of staff , facilities and training.

With a staff of nine faculty athletic trainers, two graduate assistant athletic trainers and 30 athletic training students headed by director of sports medicine Steve Westereng, UND student-athletes are in good hands, returning them quickly and safely to participation.

The UND Division of Sports Medicine was formed in 1990. Additionally, the bachelor

of science in athletic training degree and the UND Center for Sports Medicine was founded. The athletic training education program was the fi rst program in the nation to be placed directly in a school of medicine and is housed within the Department of Family Medicine, combining the eff orts of the UND Athletic Training program and the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

UNDs progressive thinking makes the institution a leader in the fi eld of athletic training. Moreover, the programs affi liation with the School of Medicine helps both the athletic training student and the student-athlete. Completion of the bachelor of science in athletic training allows the student to sit for the board of certifi cation exam to become a certifi ed athletic trainer (ATC).

The student-athletes also benefi t from having a wealth of competent individuals getting them back into action.

In order to be accepted into the athletic training program, which received a seven-year accreditation in 2001 (note: UND will receive word in August 2008 of re-accreditation) from CAAHEP, a student must complete 100 hours of observation, fi ll out a formal application, and have a minimum GPA of 2.75.

The Division of Sports Medicine also has an outpatient facility, the UND Center for Sports Medicine, which specializes in rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries. UND student-athletes, as well as the general public, utilize this facility to decrease pain, increase strength, and improve range of motion of injuries. Many of the injuries seen in the Center for Sports Medicine are signifi cant, such as pre- and post-surgical issues. The center is staff ed by Cathy Ziegler, PT/ATC, and Robin Tracy, PT/ATC, who have experience with high school, college, and professional athletes.

    ATHLETICS DIRECTORATHLETICS DIRECTOR

Brian Faison is his third year as athletics director at the University of North Dakota. Faison assumed his duties at UND in May of 2008.

Faisons fi rst year was a busy one, leading Fighting Sioux athletics through its fi rst year of transition to NCAA Division I status for all of its sports programs. He secured conference membership for 16 of UNDs 20 sports in the Great West Conference, restructured the athletics department and enhanced UNDs statewide profi le through community outreach initiatives and an expanded Fighting Sioux Sports Network.

In Faisons second year, student-athletes continued their tradition of academic excellence: four student-athletes were named academic All-Americans by ESPN the Magazine; two student-athletes received NCAA postgraduate scholarships; and a school-record 111 student-athletes received academic all-conference honors.

Alumni and fan support continued to grow: annual giving to the Fighting Sioux Club set another record; volleyball set a single-season attendance record; womens hockey fi nished seventh in the nation in average attendance; and mens hockey fi nished second in the nation in average and total attendance.

Competitively, UND teams again enjoyed outstanding seasons: volleyball, womens basketball and softball all won Great West Conference championships; mens hockey won the Broadmoor Trophy, the WCHA Final Five championship, and qualifi ed for its eighth straight NCAA tournament appearance; and football enjoyed its seventh straight winning season.

Prior to joining UND, Faison served as special assistant to the president for athletics development (2004-07) and director of athletics (1999-04) at New Mexico State University. Before that, he served as the director of development for the National Childrens Cancer Society (1995-1999). Faison gained experience in Division I administration as the director of athletics at Indiana State University (1988-1995), assistant athletics director for development at the University of Louisville (1984-1988) and assistant athletics director for promotions and fund raising at Illinois State University (1979-1984). He also had stints as the assistant manager for athletic public relations at the University of Missouri (1978-1979) and assistant director for alumni activities at the University of Missouri (1974-1978).

Faison received his bachelors degree in 1972 from the University of Missouri and is also a 1997 graduate of the National Planned Giving Institute.

Faison and his wife, Donna, have three sons: Jonathan, Matthew and Bradley.

F SF S2010 NORTH DAKOTA MENS BASKETBALL 2010 NORTH DAKOTA MENS BASKETBALL2010 NORTH DAKOTA MENS BASKETBALLMEDIA INFORMATIONThe 2010-11 University of North Dakota mens basketball media guide has been produced by the UND athletic media relations offi ce to pro-vide information for the media in covering the Fighting Sioux this season. We appreciate your interest and will do everything possible to meet your needs. Please take a few minutes to read through the infor-mation on this page and to familiarize yourself with this publication. Thank you again for your interest and coverage and enjoy the season!

MEDIA CREDENTIALS/PARKINGMedia credentials will be issued only to working media, sports infor-mation/media relations personnel, league offi cials or staff members of competing institutions with a legitimate need for access to the press row. Requests for media credentials, season or single-game, for the 2010-11 season must be made in advance with the UND media rela-tions offi ce. It is asked that you submit credential requests at least one week prior to the game you will be covering.

The northwest parking lot of the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center will serve as the media parking lot and can be accessed with your media credential.

PRESS SEATINGMembers of the media will be seated either at the courtside press row table or in an auxiliary press row in the upper level of the stands. Cheering and betting in the press row will not be tolerated and viola-tors will be removed from the press box.

PRESS ROW OPERATIONSGame programs, game notes, statistics and media guides will be avail-able at press row prior to and during all home games. Statistics will be distributed at half time and immediately following each game. All working media will have access to wireless Internet and phone data lines. A copy machine is also available in the press box.

PHOTOGRAPHERSPhotography credentials are issued to media and institutional photog-raphers only. Photographers must remain in designated areas of the arena.

RADIO/TELEVISIONThe Betty Engelstad Sioux Center press row can accommodate two radio stations, and two additional stations may be accommodated in the upper press box. On-air television talent can also be accommo-dated in the upper press box. Radio and television stations wishing to broadcast games from the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center are asked to contact basketball media relations director Ryan Powell at least two weeks prior to the event you are covering.

INTERVIEWSThe UND athletic media relations offi ce is eager to assist the media with student-athlete and coach interview requests. In order to help in this endeavor, it is asked that all media requests be made in advance through the basketball media relations director.

Players will return phone calls once requested through the media rela-tions offi ce. As per UND Athletics policy, phone numbers of student-athletes will not be disclosed to members of the media.

Student-athletes and coaches are also available for interviews before and after practice and all practices are open to the media. However, it is asked that media members wishing to attend practice contact Ryan Powell in advance.

The coaching staff and student athletes are also available for post-game interviews and all interviews will take place in the student-ath-lete lounge, adjacent to the main lobby of the Engelstad Sioux Center. The locker room, training room and weight room are closed to the media.

    HEAD COACH BRIAN JONES

Brian Jones is entering his fi fth season as the head coach of the Fighting Sioux mens basketball program. Jones and the Sioux will embark on their third season at the Division I level in 2010-11 and second in the Great West Conference.

Year one in the Great West saw the Fighting Sioux fi nish in a tie for third in the inaugural league standings with a 5-7 record. Senior Travis Bledsoe ranked second in the Great West in scoring with a 15.5 ppg average and also ranked second in league games with a 21.1 ppg clip en route to earning fi rst team All-Great West honors. Junior Derek Benter was named to the GWC All-Academic team for the second straight season as well.

Facing a full DI schedule for the fi rst time, the Sioux managed to post six wins against schools from that level, a two-game im-provement from the previous season.

Despite playing as an independent in 2008-09, which was the teams fi rst at the DI level, the Great West still delegated weekly and yearly awards for the seven teams that made up the inaugural mens basketball league. Senior Daniel Harkins, junior Dustin Monsebroten and sophomore Derek Benter earned all-academic honors, while senior forward O.J. Harrison was named Great West Player of the Week on two occasions.

With six freshmen waiting in the wings taking a redshirt season, a veteran squad closed out the campaign by winning fi ve of its last six contests to improve the teams win total for the third straight year. Four of those victories came over DI teams, proving the Sioux could compete with teams at that level across the country.

In 2007-08, Jones guided the Sioux on a memorable playoff run, leading the team to the North Central Conference championship game for the fi rst time since 2002. UND fi nished the season with a 15-15 record, a four-win improvement from the previous season and the programs most wins in three years.

Under the tutelage of Jones, senior forward Emmanuel Little earned All-NCC honors for the second straight season.

UND also enjoyed a highly successful year in the classroom, with a school-record and league-high four players earning Academ-ic All-NCC accolades: seniors Josh Doyle, Jimmy Hoy and Tyler Koenig and freshman Derek Benter. Those same four were also named to the NCC Commissioners Academic Honor Roll, also the most in the conference.

In 2006-07, Jones fi rst as a collegiate head coach, the Fighting Sioux went 11-17 overall and showed marked improvement throughout the entire year. That continued growth and renewed optimism was refl ected in the stands of the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center, where the Fighting Sioux averaged more than 2,000 fans per game to rank 14th in NCAA Division II mens basketball.

Jones, who prior to UND most recently served as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa, is the 18th head coach in the his-tory of the program and just the third in the last 36 years.

    HEAD COACH BRIAN JONES

Jones, a Rock Island, Ill., native, came to UND after spending the previous seven seasons as an assistant on Steve Alfords staff at Iowa. He spent the last fi ve seasons of his tenure as an assistant coach after serving as administrative assistant coach in his fi rst two years with the Hawkeyes.

During Jones fi ve years as assistant coach, the Hawkeyes went 98-64 (.605), received three NCAA Tournament invitations and won a pair of Big Ten tournament titles. In 2005-06, Jones helped lead Iowa to a 25-9 record, the second-most wins in school history, and the fi rst undefeated (17-0) home record in the history of the program.

While at Iowa, Jones guided seven All-Big Ten selections, 17 Academic All-Big Ten selections and four Academic All-Amer-icans. Jones also helped tutor four of the last fi ve Big Ten re-bounding champions, three straight conference leaders in blocked shots and the leagues 2005-06 defensive player of the year. Three of his student-athletes reached the National Bas-ketball Association (NBA) and two from the 2005-06 Hawkeye team have been invited to NBA camps.

Prior to arriving at Iowa, Jones spent the 1998-99 season un-der Alford as administrative assistant coach at Southwest Mis-souri State University (now Missouri State), where he helped lead the Bears to an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance and a top-20 national ranking.

No stranger to the North Central Conference, Jones was an as-sistant coach at the University of Nebraska-Omaha from 1996 to 1998 and recruited many of the players who would go on to lead the Mavericks to back-to-back conference titles. Jones fi rst coaching stint came at Alleman High School in Rock Is-land, Ill., where he was an assistant for two seasons.

Jones was a four-year letterman as a guard/forward at North-ern Iowa and went on to play professional basketball in Aus-tralia and Portugal. He was a two-time, all-state selection as a prep at Rock Island High School.

Jones earned his bachelors degree in communications and broadcasting from Northern Iowa in 1994 and his masters degree in athletic administration from Nebraska-Omaha in 2003.

Jones and his wife, Danna, have three children: sons Jaxson (7) and Jonah (3) and daughter Jersey (5).

    HEAD COACH BRIAN JONES

    HEAD COACH BRIAN JONES ON...

His coaching style: We want to build our foundation on four pillars: OutWork, OutThink, Do It Together and Have Fun. We want to outwork you on the fl oor, outthink you, play unselfi shly and have a lot of fun playing the game of basketball.

The importance of family: We really put a big emphasis on family. I dont want our relationship with the players just to be primarily on bas-ketball. I want our relationship to extend 30-plus years to where they can come back to campus and feel like they never left. I have three small children. I want our players to have an ongoing relationship with my wife and kids. The bond we have will be critical to our success on the fl oor. We will play in many hostile environments and that bond will be what gets us over the top.

The importance of respect: I truly feel you have to respect all those around you. There are so many people on campus and in the community that are trying to help. I feel the moment you stop listening to your elders or start playing against the name on the front of the jersey, you are setting yourself up to fail or get beat.

The importance of tradition: Tradition never graduates. Tradition is what is allowing us to make this transition to Division I, so it is very impor-tant. I feel it is our duty to carry that torch and continue to represent the university, community and the state at the highest level.

What it means for him to be at UND: It has been a dream come true for me personally to be a part of a university that is one of the best in the country from an academic and athletic standpoint. With this being my fi rst head coaching job, Ive been blessed to be given this opportunity. We look forward to establishing ourselves in the community and making Grand Forks our home.

What makes UND and the program special: The passion for this university is what makes it special. People are passionate about UND and Sioux athletics. They have an ownership in the university and athletic teams. This is what sets us apart from many other universities. UND bas-ketball has had a long line of great coaches and players who have gone on to do many great things after their time here. That to me shows the life skills theyve learned while at UND.

The importance of community and fan support: We need involvement from the community and student body. We want the Betty to be known for being a diffi cult place to play in. Visiting teams should know when they step off the bus they are walking into an environment that will challenge them mentally and physically.

His recruiting philosophy: We feel it is important that we take care of home fi rstthis being the state of North Dakotaand then branch out to bordering states or areas where we have relationships built. I truly believe it is our job to fi nd talent but our players are the ones in charge of recruiting. They are around each other more often than the coaches are around them. If they feel the student-athlete would be a good fi t into the university, community and program then it is a no-brainer that we want him to be the next member of the UND family.

The importance of building character: It is our job as coaches to develop life skills. We must prepare our young men for life after basketball. They will be thrown in a lot of diff erent scenarios that will challenge them during their tenure and we have to teach them how to make the most of it. We are all about doing the right job right all the time.

    COACHING STAFF

The 2010-11 season will be Ryan Moodys fi fth with the Fighting Sioux mens basketball team. After spending his fi rst four seasons as an assistant coach, Moody was elevated to the role of associate head coach in October.

Moody arrived at UND after having served as head coach at Raymore-Peculiar High School in Peculiar, Missouri since 2001. Moody inherited a program that had gone 44-81 the previous fi ve seasons, and led Peculiar to a 72-55 record over the next fi ve years, including a 53-24 mark over the last three years and the fi rst Suburban Conference title in school history.

Prior to that, Moody spent four seasons (1997 to 2001) as an assistant coach at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, where Jones was also on the staff for two of those seasons. While at UNO, Moody recruited three recruiting classes that led the Mavericks to back-to-back NCC champion-ships.

Moody received his bachelors degree in biology with a minor in secondary education from Benedictine (Kan.) College in 1997 and graduated as the eighth-leading scorer in school history. He also graduated second on the schools all-time three-pointers made list and was a three-time all-conference selection, including a pair of fi rst team honors. Moody went on to serve one year as a student assistant coach at Benedictine.

Moody earned a masters degree in recreation administration from UNO in 2000 and a masters degree in administration from William Woods (Mo.) University in 2005.
