The Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes, a unit within the Division of Academic Affairs, is the

academic support program for the University of Con-necticut’s 650 student-athletes. The primary goal of the program is to assist student-athletes in reaching their educational goals while they compete in inter-

collegiate athletics. As academic affairs officers, CPIA counselors function as liaisons between the athletic

and academic communities.

Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase

“One of the most memorable moments for me was when we had a team-wide snowball fight while walking back to the hotel after we ate lunch at a famous sandwich shop, Primanti

Bros. Coach Linstad had us all order sandwiches that had french fries and cole slaw inside!” - Claire Francis

“The thing that stood out most to me about Pittsburgh was the hotel…it was a gorgeous, classy place, and yet we

managed to find the deserted, abandoned and haunted hallways! It was so much fun to explore and see the sky-

high view from the upper floors.”- Jody Sydor

Last season UConn participated in the fourth annual Pittsburgh College Hockey

Showcase, facing Robert Morris in historic Mellon Arena, former home of the Pittsburgh

Penguins. The Huskies posted wins in both games against Robert Morris with 4-2 and

4-0 victories.

Highlights of the trip included playing in an NHL arena, staying at the historic William

Penn hotel and eating at the famous Primanti Bros. restaurant in downtown Pittsburgh.

This transformation revitalizes the state’s future by providing the means for the University to attract high-achieving students, prestigious faculty, and funding from public grants and private donors. Before the landmark program, Connecticut had one of the highest ratios of students attending college out-of-state. Today that trend has been dramatically reversed.

• Applications continue to be on the rise with nearly 23,000 applicants competing for 3,200 seats at the main campus in Storrs and 1,200 seats at the regional campuses.

• For the fifth consecutive year, more than half of the applicants are out-of-state students, comprising 33 percent of the incoming class.

J effrey A. Hathaway has provided effective leadership for the

University of Connecticut Division of Athletics as he enters his eighth year in that position. At the same time, he has also become a leader for college athletics on both the national and conference level.

He has played a vital role in the success story of UConn athlet-ics for 19 of the past 21 years as he was the Executive Associate Director of Athletics at the school from 1990-2001.In his only two years away from the Storrs campus, Hathaway enjoyed a success-ful tenure as the Director of Athletics at Colorado State University from 2001-03.

His first seven years as UConn’s Director of Athletics have arguably been the most successful in school history.

The 2009-10 academic year was another successful cam-paign. The football team played in its third-straight bowl game and won its second consecutive while the women’s basketball team won the national championship with a perfect record for the sec-ond-straight year. In addition, the men’s soccer, women’s soccer, field hockey, men’s basketball and baseball teams all qualified for postseason tournament play. UConn was also selected as one of 16 regional hosts for the NCAA baseball tournament. The women’s ice hockey team also spent most of the year ranked in the top 10 of the country.

Hathaway also directed UConn to reach an agreement with IMG College, a division of IMG Worldwide, during the 2009-10 academic year. This 10-year athletics multi-media rights partner-ship is worth more than $80 million in guaranteed payments to the University.

In 2007-08, UConn successfully completed the NCAA certifi-cation process. The institution was previously certified, once every 10 years as set forth by the NCAA, in 1998. Hathaway provided leadership for a comprehensive, year-long self study of the opera-tions in the Division of Athletics, a site visit by a peer review team, a NCAA certification committee’s review of the self-study and a report by the peer review team.

The Division also reached new long-term agreements with two of its media partners in recent years – Connecticut Public Television for women’s basketball and WTIC radio for football and men’s and women’s basketball. UConn also completed a landmark

ten-year, $46 million corporate partnership agreement with Nike, Inc. to exclusively provide footwear, apparel and equipment for Husky athletics.

In addition to his leadership role at UConn, Hathaway is enter-ing his fourth-year of a five-year term on the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee representing the BIG EAST Conference. As a member of the ten-person committee, Hathaway takes part in the selection and administration of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship and the administration of the CBS televi-sion contract. Hathaway will serve as chairman of that committee in 2011-12. He is only the fourth individual in the history of the BIG EAST Conference to serve on the committee, joining Dave Gavitt, Jake Crouthamel and Mike Tranghese.

Hathaway is a member of the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association Board of Trustees and on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).

Some significantly historic achievements have occurred during Hathaway’s time as Director of Athletics. UConn became the first school to win the NCAA Division I men’s and women’s basketball championships in the same year (2004) and the football team was victorious in its first ever bowl game - the 2004 Motor City Bowl.

Private fundraising for UConn athletics continues to provide exceptional academic and athletic opportunities for student-ath-letes.

UConn secured a gift of $2.5 million from alumnus Mark Shenkman in 2004 for the building of the Mark R. Shenkman Training Center, an intercollegiate and recreational services facility that serves the entire university community.

Under Hathaway’s guidance, the Division of Athletics received the University’s Environmental Leadership Award for the construc-tion of The Burton Family Football Complex and the Mark R. Shenkman Training Center. The two buildings are the University’s first projects certified as meeting the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards for “green” buildings. At its 13th annual awards ceremony in March of 2008, the Connecticut Real Estate Exchange presented UConn with the “Green Building Award” for these environmentally-friendly facilities.

In his role as Director, Hathaway also oversees UConn’s Recreational Services program. Serving the entire University com

munity, approximately 580,000 individual uses were logged last year, reflecting the popularity of the diverse health and fitness offerings to students, faculty and staff.

Hathaway leads a head coaching staff that is one of the most experienced in the country. UConn has 13 head coaches that have been in their current position 10 or more years as of the 2010-11 academic year, including women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma (26th year in 2010-11), men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun (25th) and football coach Randy Edsall (12th). The University recently completed a long term contract extension with Calhoun. UConn has the distinction of being the only school in the nation with two active Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coaches in Calhoun (Class of 2005 inductee) and Auriemma (Class of 2006 inductee).

Hathaway was also a key factor in the opening of Rentschler Field in 2003 – the country’s newest and most modern BCS college football facility.

During Hathaway’s career, he has always made the student-athlete the top priority.

In the spring and fall semesters of the 2009 calendar year, UConn’s student-athletes excelled in the classroom as nearly 50% of the 650 student-athletes achieved a 3.0 “B-or better” semester grade point average. In addition, the Division of Athletics has con-sistently maintained a 99 percent retention rate among its student-athletes.

“My focus is on the student-athlete,” says Hathaway. “That’s the most important part of our program. Our primary mission is the continued academic success of our student-athletes. The challenge is to identify people early in the process and assist them in charting a career path. In addition, we want to provide a quality experience in intercollegiate athletics for our student-athletes.”

The University of Connecticut was saluted for its commu-nity service efforts by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) three times under Hathaway’s watch for its commu-nity service efforts. UConn was also honored by the NCAS in 2006 and ’07 for its efforts to assist former student-athletes in earning their college degree.

In the 2006-07 academic year, Hathaway served on the University search committee to hire Vice President/Chief Operating Officer Barry Feldman and Executive Director of the Alumni Association Lisa Lewis. He is currently a member of the search committee for the University’s new president.

Hathaway’s leadership has earned him respect and recogni-tion both on the national and local levels.

He was one of four finalists for the “Athletic Director of the Year” in the spring of 2008 at the inaugural Sports Business Awards by Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal.

In the summers of 2007 and ‘10, Hathaway was honored by NACDA as the AstroTurf Athletic Director of the Year for Division I-A in the Northeast region (which includes the New England states and New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and New Jersey).

In 2004, The Sporting News named Hathaway to its “Power 100 List” - comprised of the 100 most powerful people in sports. He received the Joseph J. Fontana Distinguished Service Award from the Connecticut High School Coaches Association in the spring of 2005. In the winter of 2006,

Hathaway received the General Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award from the All-American Football Foundation.

During his tenure at both Colorado State and UConn, he was a member of the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet, as well as the Postseason Football Licensing Subcommittee, which is responsible for issues involving postseason football competition and the certification of bowl games.

On the conference level, Hathaway was the chair of the BIG EAST Athletic Directors Executive Committee through November of 2009. He is also past chairman of the BIG EAST Championship and Competition Committee as well as the league’s Finance Committee.

Hathaway has served as a guest presenter at both the NACDA and NACMA (National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators) conventions in the past. In addition, he has also served as a lecturer at the IA Institute sponsored by the Division I-A Athletic Directors’ Association, held annually in Dallas.

Hathaway originally came to Connecticut in November of 1990 as Senior Associate Athletic Director. In that role, he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the Division of Athletics.

He served internally as a program administrator for several sports, including men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s soccer at UConn as the Huskies won four national cham-pionships in those sports during his tenure - two in women’s bas-ketball (1995 and 2000) and one each in men’s basketball (1999) and men’s soccer (2000).

Hathaway was also the program administrator for football. He played a critical role in the upgrade of the football program to Division I-A status as UConn became the first ever school to transi-tion from the I-AA level to a BCS football conference.

During Hathaway’s tenure at Colorado State, he oversaw a 15-sport program - nine women’s teams and six men’s. The Ram football team made a pair of bowl appearances while Hathaway was at CSU. The men’s basketball team won the Mountain West Conference tournament in March of ‘03 and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 13 years. The women’s basketball team advanced to postseason play twice, including a trip to the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2002 and the semifinals of the 2003 Women’s NIT.

Hathaway was an extremely successful fundraiser during his time in Fort Collins. The school drew national attention for a $15.2 million gift from the Bohemian Foundation and president Pat Stryker for football stadium renovations and expansion.

Prior to his first stint at UConn, Hathaway served in a number of capacities at his alma mater - the University of Maryland - from 1982-90, including Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Promotions, Acting Assistant Athletics Director for Business Affairs, Athletics Business Manager and men’s basketball trainer.

Hathaway earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Administration from the University of Maryland in 1981. He later received a Master’s Degree in General Administration (1991) from the University of Maryland and is currently continuing work on a PhD in Educational Leadership from the University of Connecticut.

He attended The Sports Management Institute at the Universities of Notre Dame and Southern California. Hathaway also completed the Management Development Program at Harvard University.

Born June 20, 1959, in Cheverly, Md., Hathaway and his wife Paula have two children: Meghan (October 15, 1991) and Michael (June 11, 1995).

At the helm of the University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey program since its inception, head coach Heather Linstad is set to guide the Huskies in her 11th season behind the bench. Linstad has led the Huskies to two Hockey East Championship appearances, including last season’s runner up finish. She has mentored five student-athletes to major Hockey East awards with Cristin Allen and Jennifer Chaisson receiving inaugural Best Defensemen and Best Defensive Forward Awards follow-ing the 2009-10 season. Ten members of the UConn women’s ice hockey team have garnered All-Hockey East Selections over the past seven years, including one first-team selection and a trio of honorable mentions last year. Allen was named to the first team in 2010 following her second team honor in 2009 while Alexandra Garcia, Jody Sydor and Monique Weber all received honorable mentions. Linstad has been a head coach for 18 seasons, spending the last 10 at UConn, collecting 141 of her 302 career victories with the Huskies. On Feb. 13 with a 4-1 victory over Providence, Linstad captured her 300th career victory to become one of just three Division I women’s ice hockey coaches to achieve 300 or more wins in their career. That win placed Linstad among the elite as there are only four head coaches in either Division I or Division III women’s ice hockey to have won 300 or more games. A career highlight amongst a season of program highlights, Linstad and the UConn coaching staff guided the team to a 21-9-7 overall record and a fourth-place finish in the Hockey East stand-ings after a 10-5-6-1 showing and a series of tiebreakers. The Huskies used a pair of quick starts to earn their place in the Championship Game, winning games at Northeastern and at top-seeded Providence. UConn ultimately fell in the first-ever overtime Championship Game in Hockey East Tournament History to Boston University. Cristin Allen, Michelle Binning and Amy Hollstein all earned spots on the Hockey East All-Tournament Team giving UConn the most number of honorees in program history. During the season, the Huskies reached the highest national ranking received at No. 7 for two-consecutive weeks, ending the season at No. 9 according to the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll. Connecticut spent 11 weeks among the nationally-ranked women’s ice hockey programs fol-lowing the 2008-09 season during which the Huskies spent eight weeks among the top teams. The 2008-09 season saw Linstad lead the team to its third-consecutive Hockey East Tournament berth with a 10-8-3 conference record. UConn finished the season with a 19-12-4 overall mark, that included a nine-game winning streak, during which the Huskies defeated eventual national runner-up Mercyhurst at Mark Edward Freitas. UConn defended its Nutmeg Classic Title with its third-consecutive such championship, hosting Wayne State, Yale and Quinnipiac. Linstad mentored a trio of student-athletes to post-season recognition with Cristin Allen and Dominique Thibault each earning spots on the All-Hockey East Second Team while Brittany Wilson garnered an honorable mention following her final season. Allen was also honored with a spot on the New England Writers’ All-Star Team, becoming the sixth Connecticut student-athlete to do so.In 2009-10, Allen followed with her second-consecutive such honor, becoming the first Connecticut player to earn a spot on the New England Writers’ All-Star Team twice in their career. At the time, it was arguably the most successful season in women’s ice hockey history in Storrs, although the achievements of Linstad and her 2009-10 team challenged the 2007-08 squad that laid the foundation for success to come. The Huskies set a program-high for wins in a single season (22) and achieved the most number of Hockey East victories (13) in program history. En route to the nine-game winning streak that was tied in 2008-09, the 2007-08 Huskies won four games over nationally ranked opponents and set a plateau yet to be reached – an 11-game unbeaten streak. In addition to the team accolades achieved throughout the 2007-08 season, two individu-als were acknowledged for the contributions to the team. Dominique Thibault was named the program’s first ever Hockey East Player of the Year and All-American. Jaclyn Hawkins because the team’s first student-athlete to earn the Sportsmanship Award, capping off one of the most successful women’s ice hockey careers in Husky Hockey. Entering the Hockey East Tournament for the second-straight year, UConn was the No. 2 seed as well as among the top-10 in the nation throughout the entire season with the exception of just two weeks. The Huskies defeated or tied five of the eight teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament en route to their 2006-07 conference tournament appearance. UConn won 17 games, including 12 conference victories with four wins over nationally-ranked programs. All program-bests would last just one year as Linstad and the Huskies set new records the following season. Among a season of highlights, UConn was the only team to hand, eventual Frozen Four participant, Boston College a pair of losses at home. Following a stellar rookie campaign, Hawkins was a record setter, creating new plateaus in career goals, assists and points and was one of four different Connecticut players to take hardware home from the 2006-07 Hockey East Banquet.

HEAD COACH HEATHER LINSTAD

In a season hampered by injuries, the 2005-06 Huskies fell in the Nutmeg Classic title game a year after capturing the championship for the first time. UConn concluded the season with a 12-21-1 overall record that included a 10-11-0 mark in Hockey East action. Midway through the year, four Connecticut student-athletes were selected to the Hockey East All-Star Team led by Linstad that took on Team USA in an exhibition game. The senior class of the 2004-05 achieved one of their objectives, end-ing the year among the top 10 programs in the nation according to both the USCHO.com and USA Today/American Hockey Magazine polls after finishing the season with a 16-12-8 record. UConn put a cap on an 11-5-4 Hockey East regular season record en route to a third-place finish in the final conference standings. The Huskies advanced to their first ever appear-ance in the championship game, falling to defending champion Providence. Linstad players garnered weekly awards from the Hockey East and USCHO for their play through the season, culminating in a variety of postseason accolades. Hawkins was named both the Hockey East and USCHO Rookie of the Year while also earning spots on the All-Hockey East Rookie and Second Teams. Netminder Kaitlyn Shain also earned a spot on the second team while Natalie Vibert received first team honors. In addition to invaluable guidance on the ice, Linstad emphasizes suc-cess in the classroom and has mentored her student-athletes to achieve in the classroom as well. Overall, 63 student-athletes have collected Hockey East All-Academic Team Honors over the past eight years. In 2004, a program-high 15 student-athletes were acknowledged by the conference for the academic prowess. Three of the six honored following the 2009-10 season had earned honors the season before with Alexandra Garcia, Jaclyn Camardo and Nicole Camardo were joined by Rebecca Hewett, Maude Blain and Claire Francis. Lisa Beck was twice named the Top Student-Athlete by the confer-ence, earning the highest grade-point average (GPA) among the league’s defenders in 2004 and 2005. A highlight among Connecticut’s academic achievements, Beck tied for the Top Scholar Athlete average with a 4.0 GPA. Linstad was acknowledged for her significant impact on USA Hockey in 2007 for her 15 years of service both as a speaker and coach. She has been a presenter at the USA Hockey Master’s Symposium and the Level 4 Coach’s Certification program. Behind the bench, Linstad has been a coach at the USA National Hockey Festival in Lake Placid, N.Y. five times, including the 1997 Festival which was an Olympic selection year. She has coached USA Hockey Junior Development Camp for athletes ranging from 14 to 18 years of age. She has been a part of the USA Rocky Mountain District

Camp from 1996 through 2002 and again in 2004. Linstad served as the head coach of the Australian National Team in Sydney in July of 1996. She was the head coach of the Hockey East All-Star Team that competed against Team USA during the 2005-06. In accordance with mentoring student-athletes toward success beyond hockey, Linstad has instilled a sense of community awareness within the women’s ice hockey program at Connecticut. For the third-straight season UConn headlined the Hockey East’s Breast Cancer Awareness fundraising program, Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer, raising $9,000 during the 2009-10 season. The Huskies continue to expand their impact on the conference-wide fundraising program and have raised well over $20,000 since the program began four years ago. Expanding their community involvement has seen the Huskies create a Christmas evening for a YMCA girls’ home with Linstad’s team supply-ing the tree, ornaments, lights and gifts while sharing pizza, in an effort to create invaluable memories with the girls in 2006. UConn adopted a family from Hartford in 2005 and helped provide the everyday essentials for a memorable holiday. A native of Chlemsford, Mass., Linstad came to Connecticut after com-piling a 161-71-27 overall record at the helm of the Northeastern University women’s ice hockey team for eight seasons. While at Northeastern, Linstad guided those Huskies to four Beanpot titles and earned one of the fourth berths to the first-ever collegiate Women’s Hockey National Championship Tournament (AWCHA) in 1998. Before that, Linstad guided Northeastern to the ECAC Championship in 1997 while boasting a then-school-record with 27 wins. Just prior to joining UConn, Linstad was inducted to the Chelmsford High School Hall of Fame in 2000. Linstad, a 1989 graduate of Providence College, earned a degree in business administration while representing the Friars in three varsity sports. She was team captain for three of the four seasons she played on the women’s ice hockey team, scoring 76 goals and adding 72 assists. Linstad is ninth on Providence’s all-time career points list, fifth in goals and seventh in assists. She was awarded the 1989 ECAC Player of the Year Award and continues to hold the distinction of being the only individual to earn the ECAC Player of the Year Award and the ECAC Coach of the Year Award. In addition to her outstanding ice hockey career at Providence, Linstad played three seasons of soccer and spent a year on the softball squad. Linstad currently resides in Vernon, Conn. with her black lab, Sydney.

Jaime Totten immediately joined her former head coach Heather Linstad to develop the University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey program and enters her 11th season with the Huskies. Totten has been an instrumental aspect of the Division I program’s foundation at UConn since the Huskies’ began playing women’s ice hockey in 2000-01. Totten will resume her position as the recruiting coordinator for Connecticut as she has since the day she began, continually bringing student-athletes who make an immediate impact on the ice and in the classroom. The 2004-05 season marked the first year that four full recruiting classes took the ice for UConn and the 2009-10 season saw the graduation of arguably the most successful class. During the 2009-10 season, the Huskies notched their highest ever national ranking of No. 7, surpassing the plateau of the eighth-national ranking set by the 2004-05 squad. The 2009-10 team also matched the 2004-05 squad in earning Connecticut’s second Hockey East Championship Game appearance. In addition to her recruiting responsibilities, Totten runs the defensive end of the bench, assists in daily practice and preparations, directs special teams plays and directs the team alumni efforts. Under her tutelage, Cristin Allen became the first-ever Connecticut player to be named to the New England Writer’s All-Star Team twice in her career in 2009-10. Allen also earned back-to-back All-Hockey East accolades and was named the league’s inaugural Best Defensemen with the guidance of Totten. Totten served as an assistant coach with the Hockey East All-Star Team that included Allen, Amy Hollstein, Jody Sydor and Monique Weber midway through last season. The Hockey East All-Stars played Team USA prior to the 2010 Vancouver Olympics as part of the National Team’s Qwest Tour. In 2008, she served as an assistant coach for the USA Women’s National Under-22 program against Canada for a three-game series in August. She was responsible for assisting daily practices and instructing the defensive end of the bench. Totten was chosen to work with the USA Hockey Under-14 Select Camp in 2007 in Rochester, N.Y. She also coached the Select 16’s and 17’s that same year at the Junior National Camp in Lake Placid, N.Y. Prior to her coaching career, Totten was a mainstay at several USA Hockey Camps and Festivals as a player. She served as an assistant captain during the 1995 Junior National Team and participated in the 1997 USA Festival during the 1998 Olympic Team selections. Totten appeared in every single game of her four-year varsity career at Northeastern. She was twice the recipient of All-America honors while serving as captain in 1997-98 and 1998-99. Following the 1996-97 season, Totten earned ECAC First Team All-Star Honors after helping Northeastern to the ECAC Conference Title, finishing the season with a then-school record 27-9-0. Her on and off the ice leadership combined with her sportsmanship earned Totten the prestigious Sarah Devins Award from the ECAC as a senior. After graduating with honors, earning a bachelor’s degree in cardiopulmonary science with a concentration in exercise physiology, Totten served as student-assistant coach for her alma mater during the 1999-2000 season. She was awarded the National Student Athlete Award and was named a Scholar Athlete during her career. A native of Stafford, N.Y., Totten currently resides in Mansfield Center, Conn.

Returning for her second season as an assistant with the Connecticut women’s ice hockey team, Kirsti Anderson joined the Huskies prior to their historic run in the 2009-10 season. Anderson was an assistant at Hamilton College for two years where she helped the Continentals with on-ice practice and game preparation. She made a seamless transition to the Huskies, continuing similar responsibilities, including working with the defensive unit. At Hamilton, Anderson contributed to the program’s alumnae communication efforts, recruiting and travel planning in addition to her coaching responsibilities. Under her guidance, defenseman Kate Marek earned a spot on the NESCAC First-Team, leading the conference in defensemen in scoring during the 2008-09 season. Anderson attended the NCAA Women Coaches Academy in 2008 following a brief time with the Union College women’s ice hockey team as a volunteer assistant. There Anderson conducted weekly video sessions and contributed to the defensive elements of the game during games and practices. Her collegiate playing experience began at Division III Bowdoin where Anderson was a First-Team All-American on a pair of Final Four squads. She was acknowledged as the NESCAC’s Rookie of the Year and Bowdoin College’s Freshman Female Athlete of the Year. She earned a spot on the all-conference first team as a rookie and as a sophomore guided the team to a third-place finish at the NCAA Tournament. That season, Anderson co-led defensemen in scoring in Division III ice hockey. From 2003-05, Anderson was an instrumental part of two NCAA Final Four teams at Dartmouth where she helped lead the Big Green to the Ivy League Championship in 2004. That season, Dartmouth was an ECAC Semifinalist followed by a ECAC Second Place finish the following season. Anderson has participated in the USA 18s and 19s Junior National Camp and was twice a part of the USA Women’s National Team Festival in 2002-03. She was invited to the 2003 National Team Tryouts as well. A 2005 graduate from Dartmouth with a degree in biological sciences, Anderson played defense for the Ottawa Raiders and Oakville Ice of the National Women’s Hockey League in Canada prior to pursuing her coach-ing career.

212010-11 UCONN WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY

SEASON OUTLOOK

The senior trio of Jody Sydor, Brittany Murphy and Jennifer Chaisson will return to lead the 2010-11 University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team, serving as this season’s captains. With the experience of the returning players as well as the skills and knowl-edge of the incoming freshmen, the Huskies are poised to build upon last season’s success. Sydor, a 2009-10 Hockey East Honorable Mention, will serve as captain for the Huskies while anchoring the UConn defense. Sydor earned her captain title after serving as an assistant captain last sea-son, while leading the Huskies both on and off the ice. "I believe Jody will build on her experiences from last year and provide quality leadership in the lockerroom, weight room and on the ice," Head coach Heather Linstad said. "Her biggest asset is her work ethic, and I hope the younger players will emulate not only her work ethic but also her compassion and dedication to the program." Murphy, who led Connecticut in game-winning goals last season, returns as the Huskies energy leader, providing quality experience to the UConn offense. "Brittany will provide lots of energy and enthusiasm on and off the ice," Linstad said. "She plays all out every time she is on the ice, and this is something the rest of the team feeds off of during games." Chaisson, the 2009-10 Hockey East's Best Defensive Forward, led the Huskies last season with seven goals and 10 assists against Hockey East opponents, and will continue to use her skills and knowledge of the game to lead UConn to another successful season. "Jennifer is a quiet leader who I consider a go-to player," Linstad said. "She does the little things that help a team win and she will be instrumental in leading our younger forwards on the ice this year."

Forwards Chaisson and Murphy will be called upon this year to lead the Husky offense along with veterans Monique Weber and Kelly Horan. The quartet accounted for 88 points last year, including 36 UConn goals.

Weber returns after earning Hockey East Honorable Mention accolades while representing UConn at the WHEA All-Star game last year along with Sydor, Cristin Allen and Amy Hollstein. She was sec-ond on the team in overall points, goals and assists during 2009-10 and will once again be at the front of the Husky offense. Horan was voted as the team's Rookie of the Year last sea-son after posting six goals and 12 assists, leading the newcomers in Hockey East play. "Jennifer, Brittany, Monique and Kelly will lead our offense this year because of the success and experience they had last season, but the six freshmen forwards will certainly bring a new dynamic to our offense with their speed and vision," Linstad said. Those six freshmen include Alexandra Vakos, Stephanie Raithby, Jenny Saxon, Jenna Welch, Taylor Gross and Jocelyn Slattery, who will battle for playing time along with junior Jaclyn Camardo.

Defense Sydor will anchor the Husky defense this season, along with a core group of returners who provide UConn depth and experience on the defensive line. The returners, who played in every game last season except one, include Rebecca Hewett, Sami Evelyn, Maude Blain and Casey Knajdek. "We will have great depth on defense this season," Linstad said. "All of our returners are battle tested and they all played a large role in UConn having one of the lowest GAA in the country last year." Not only will the Husky defense provide strength on the back line, but they will also increase UConn's scoring opportunities. As a group, the returners have posted 23 goals and 85 assists during their careers, including 12 goals and 41 assists last season. Hewett returns after being among the team leaders with 12 assists during her rookie campaign, including a pair in the Nutmeg Classic Championship game.

Evelyn enters her junior campaign after recording a career-high 12 assists last season, with a career-high two assists coming in the Nutmeg Classic Championship and also against Vermont. This season Blain will help the Huskies on both the defensive and offensive sides of play, after posting five goals and four assists during her first year of collegiate hockey. Knajdek, who led the Huskies with a +19 rating last season, returns after seeing playing time in all 37 contests last year, posting two goals and five assists as a freshman. Hockey East Honorable Mention, Alexandra Garcia returns in net for the Huskies, after playing in 33 games as a freshman, posting 718 saves, a 1.60 GAA and six shutouts. Garcia also led the Hockey East last season with a 1.42 GAA in conference play. "Alexandra had a very good season for us last year and she has worked hard this off-season to make sure that she could be the backbone of our defense again this year," Linstad said. The UConn defense will be joined by a pair of newcomers, Kiana Nauheim and goal-tender Nicole Paniccia. Both Paniccia and sophomore Claire Francis will battle Garcia for playing time in the net, while Nauheim will battle junior Nicole Camardo and sophomore Carli Pridmore for time on the ice.

Schedule Highlighted by 11 Hockey East contests and an outdoor game to be played at Rentschler Field as part of the Whalers Hockey Fest, the Huskies will play 15 home contests during the 2010-11 season. UConn will also hit the road for 19 games this year, including the first-ever trip to Minnesota-Duluth to take on the reigning NCAA Division I National Champions. "This season will be one of the most competitive schedules that UConn has ever played," Linstad said. "Hockey East as a league continues to grow stronger which means all 21 conference games this year will be a 60 minute battle." For just the second time in program history UConn will open the season against a Hockey East opponent, hosting New Hampshire on Oct. 2. The contest also marks the sec-ond-consecutive season that the Wildcats and the Huskies will face-off during the first game of the season. After the first game the Huskies will take a break from Hockey East action and face five non-conference opponents, including home games against Clarkson (Oct. 9) and St. Lawrence (Oct. 10). During this stretch UConn will play at Colgate (Oct. 15), Syracuse (Oct. 16) and national powerhouse, Minnesota-Duluth (Oct. 23-24). The Huskies return to conference play with a home and away series with Boston College, hosting the Eagles on Nov. 30 and will travel to BC on Nov. 31. Connecticut will play four conference games before defending their title at the Nutmeg Classic at the end of November, including home contests against Maine (Nov. 6) and New Hampshire (Nov. 14), while traveling to New Hampshire (Nov. 13) and Vermont (Nov. 20). The Huskies will defend their 2009-10 Nutmeg Classic crown beginning on Nov. 26 as they host Yale in the opening game of the tournament (Quinnipiac is the host team for the 2010-11 Nutmeg Classic), with the consolation and championship games played on Nov. 27. "There is a tremendous amount of excitement surrounding non-conference games this year," Linstad said. "We will be playing Minnesota-Duluth for the first time in program history, we will be defending our Nutmeg Championship from last season and we will be playing out-doors at Rentschler Field, which are all a very exciting opportunities for our team." A pair of Hockey East contests and a non-conference match-up at Union (Dec. 8) marks the end of the first half of the season for the Huskies. UConn will host the defending Hockey East Champions in Boston University on Dec. 4 before traveling to Providence to face the Friars on Dec. 5. UConn returns after the new year to a full schedule in January, facing all five of their opponents twice during the month. The Huskies will travel to Dartmouth (Jan. 1-2), Maine (Jan. 21-22) and Boston University (Jan. 28) and will host Robert Morris (Jan. 8-9), Vermont (Jan. 14-15) and BU (Jan. 29). Connecticut will close out the 2010-11 regular season with six Hockey East contests beginning with a trip to BC on Feb. 3. The Huskies will host Northeastern on Feb. 6 and will play a home and away series against Providence on Feb. 12 and Feb. 13, with the February 13 contest being played at Rentschler Field following the UConn men's hockey game against Sacred Heart as part of the Whalers Hockey Fest. The Huskies will play a final home and away against Northeastern to close the season, traveling to Boston on Feb. 20 and hosting the Huskies on Feb. 20 on Senior Day.

372010-11 UCONN WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY

Led by arguably the most successful senior class in University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey history, the Huskies achieved the pro-gram’s second-ever Hockey East Championship game appearance and finished the season ranked ninth according to the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll. In total, the Huskies spent 11 weeks among the nationally-ranked. In total, the Huskies finished the season among the top-15 in the nation in over 16 statistics tracked by the NCAA, including eighth in team points, seventh in assists and third in shorthanded goals. Behind a pair of shorthanded goals by Amy Hollstein, Connecticut set a new program record for shorthanded goals in a single season with six. Throughout the season, the Huskies special teams were instrumental to their 21-9-7 overall record, ending the season with their power-play 14th and the 12th best penalty killing in the nation. Reflective of an overall team effort, individually Michelle Binning led UConn with five gamewinners and was sixth in the NCAA. Hollstein’s two shorthanded goals placed her on an exclusive list and ninth in the nation. In her first season as the starting goalie for the Huskies, Alexandra Garcia set single-season records and etched her name among the best in Connecticut history. Garcia was eighth or better in every goalie sta-tistic kept by the NCAA, including fifth with six shutouts, fourth with a .931 save-percentage and seventh with a 1.60 goals-against average. Her 18-win season and six-shutout efforts sit atop UConn’s single-season records while she is fourth with 718 saves during the 2009-10 season. Garcia is poised to break career records as she already leads all with a 1.68 goals-against average. The numbers do not tell the whole story of this team as members of the 2009-10 squad picked up post-season accolades, including Cristin Allen and Jennifer Chaisson as inaugural Hockey East major award winners. Allen was acknowledged as the leagues Best Defensemen while Chaisson was selected as the conference’s Best Defensive Forward. For the second-consecutive season, Allen received All-Hockey East Honors, earning a spot on the first team. She headlined a group of four Connecticut honorees as Garcia, Jody Sydor and Monique Weber all pulled in honorable mentions. During the season, UConn players earned four conference Player of the Week Awards, five Defensive Player of the Week nods and a trio of Rookie of the Week honors. In addition to collecting four of Connecticut’s Defensive Player of the Week Awards, Garcia was named the Bauer Goaltender of the Month in January following a 1.09 GAA and .951 save-percentage effort. Two-time Rookie of the Week Honoree, Elisabeth Stathopulos added Bauer Rookie of the Month Accolades to her freshman year effort in February. The six members of the 2009-10 senior class achieved their fourth-consecutive, and sixth bid in the last eight season, Hockey East Tournament berth after guiding the Huskies to a 10-5-6-1 con-ference record en route to a fourth-place finish. Allen, Binning and Hollstein all earned spots on the All-Tournament Team following an overtime loss to Boston University at Schneider Arena in the cham-pionship game. UConn used a pair of quick starts to capture a spot in the Championship Game, including three goals in less than a minute in a half at Northeastern in the quarterfinals. Kelly Horan started things off with her sixth of the season less than six minutes into the game followed by goals from Brittany Murphy and Stathopulos to capture a 3-0 lead at 7:22 of the first period. Starting Northeastern netminder Florence Schelling vacated the net in favor of Leah Sulyma who had stonewalled the Huskies in the regular season while Schelling competed in the Olympics with

Switzerland. Sulyma allowed Hollstein’s shorthanded goal as the other Huskies fell 4-1 Schelling collected the loss. The same upstart offense that was in Boston, Mass. arrived in Providence, R.I. as the Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first peri-od with Stathopulos, Hollstein and Binning hitting the back of the net. Binning and Hollstein each finished the game with a goal and assist, play-ing significant roles in the 3-2 upset victory over top-seeded Providence at Schneider Arena. It was the first time in Hockey East Tournament his-tory that the Huskies defeated Providence after going 1-0-2 versus the Friars in the regular season. That regular-season win against Providence provided head coach Heather Linstad with her 300th career coaching victory and her 139th victory behind the bench at Connecticut. It was also a bright spot in a bit of a slide that UConn suffered as the regular season came to a close with the Huskies going 2-2-2 over the final six games of the 2009-10 slate. Capturing just a pair of victories over the final month of the regular season was not as detrimental to Connecticut as it could have been after rattling off nine-straight victories when it mattered most. The call for a winning streak was answered after the New Year. After an 8-6-4 start to the season, including a 2-3-4 Hockey East record, the program’s first-ever appearance in the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase at Mellon Arena started a new series with Robert Morris of the CHA that proved to be instrumental in the Huskies season. A 4-2 victory at the NHL venue and a follow-up 4-0 win in Moon Township, Pa. marked a turning point for Connecticut. Led by the stellar play in goal by Garcia and the defense in front of her including Allen and Sydor, UConn allowed a combined seven goals over the nine-game span. Garcia recorded three shutouts, including back-to-back shutout perfor-mances in conference contests at Boston University and against Vermont. It was the first time the Terriers had been shutout at Walter Brown Arena since January 8, 2009 and it provided a momentum booster for the Huskies as they prepared to host Hockey East favorite New Hampshire to cap off a season-long three game homestand at Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum. The victory also gave Connecticut a 2-0-1 record against the Terriers. The 4-1 loss to the then-No. 4 Wildcats snapped the Huskies’ nine-game winning streak and 11-game unbeaten streak. UConn bounced back from a 0-0 Senior Day tie and shootout loss to then-No. 8/9 Northeastern prior to the 2-0 loss in Boston to the other Huskies,

2009-10 SEASON IN REVIEW

defeating the same team handedly 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the Hockey East Tournament. In what would become a characteristic of the Huskies in the post season, UConn used striking first to its advantage capturing a 15-3-2 record when doing so. Connecticut used that strength in both games of the Nutmeg Classic, en route to the title for the third-consecutive season. Weber scored within the first five minutes of the game against Quinnipiac while Garcia made 20 saves against the home team to bring the Huskies within reach in a 1-0 victory. UConn followed the semi-final performance with a three-goal first period against Yale, surpassing the Bulldogs by adding three more goals and Jennie Bellonio making 21 saves. The Huskies used three power-play goals, including a pair at the end by Chaisson and Weber to capture the Nutmeg Classic title. Binning was acknowledged as the Tournament MVP while Garcia received the Laurie Belliveau Award. That accomplishment was prior to the Huskies program-tying nine-game winning streak, yet provided a spark for the team following a 1-2-2 showing in the five games leading up to the Nutmeg Classic in New Haven. The victory in that stretch came on the road against Maine, a game during which Allen assisted in every possible scoring situation to finish the night with four assists in the 7-2 victory. Chaisson had a shorthanded and a power play goal in the game with just two of the Huskies’ goal occurring in even-strength situations. Binning and Weber also tallied one while the Black Bears were on the power play. Garcia made 29 saves, including 16 in the final stanza. Maine and Vermont were two of the teams UConn went 3-0-0 against in the regular season while the Huskies were undefeated against Boston University with a 2-0-1 record and Providence 1-0-2. The Huskies boast-ed the second-best overall defense in the conference and were top-four in both power play and penalty kill. Garcia was second in overall goals against (1.60) and was second in winning percentage (.652). Binning, who graduated tied for fourth on the all-time career scoring list, finished with 20 goals and was one of just six student-athletes in the Hockey East to finish the season with 30 or more points. She was tied for fifth in overall scoring and was one of the sharpest in the league, fin-ishing third with 20 goals. Binning’s goal total placed her fifth on UConn’s

single-season list as she contributed just the fifth 20 or more goal season effort in program history. In her second season of collegiate hockey, Weber followed her solid fresh-man campaign with a bal-anced sophomore effort. She was tied for seventh in the league with 29 points from 14 goals and 15 assists. She joined Binning among the league’s best in goal scoring tied for sixth. Five UConn players finished in the top-20 in scoring at the season’s end, including Chaisson (16th), Allen (17th) and Stathopulos (23rd). Stathopulos was third among freshman in scoring and was joined by Horan in the top-10 in the league. Horan finished the year with 18 points (eighth). Behind another career season, two-time Patty Kaz nominee, Allen finished third in the Hockey East with 21 assists. Good for fourth on Connecticut’s single-season all-time list, etching her name second among career assist lead-

ers. Allen led all the Hockey East defenseman with her 24-point senior year effort. Allen became the first UConn player to receive New England Writer's All-Star Honors. She was named to the team for the second-consecutive season and extended the Huskies' streak of accolades from the association to six-straight seasons. Fellow UConn defenseman Sami Evelyn and Sydor joined her among the top-10. Evelyn contributed 15 points for fifth while Sydor was tied for 10th with 12 points in her junior season. At the end of the year banquet, Allen was named the team’s Most Valuable Player while Hollstein was acknowledged by the coaching staff as the Pat Babcock Award recipient. Binning earned the Unsung Hero Award and Tiffany Good pulled in the Most Improved Player Award. Horan was named the team’s Rookie of the Year after leading the class in scoring in conference contests.

SUPPORT STAFF

Strength and Conditioning Maureen Butler • Asst. Strength & Conditioning CoachThe strength and conditioning program for University of Connecticut is under the supervision of UConn Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Jerry Martin. The Strength and Conditioning staff services all 24 of Connecticut’s intercollegiate teams. Assisting directly with the Strength and conditioning efforts for UConn hockey is strength and conditioning staff member Maureen Butler. Butler has worked with the USA Women's Hockey U-18 team. UConn hockey players have the use of two different weight rooms in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and the newly remodeled Hugh S. Greer Field House. In all, there are over 8,000 square feet of weight training facilities available for all UConn student-athletes. The weight room in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is a free weight facility and supplies the Husky student-athletes areas in which to perform their power and Olympic lifts. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights in which the UConn

hockey players can incorporate circuit training, speed training and heavy negative workouts into their total strength-training program. Jerry Martin and his staff supervise a strength and conditioning program for each individual athlete for training all year long. Each program can be manip-ulated in order to fulfill the specific needs of the individual. Specific testing is done to each hockey player to monitor progress in strength, power, body composition, anaerobic conditioning and flexibility. These tests provide the coaches and medical staff with an accurate athletic profile on each athlete.

Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes Becky Taylor • CPIA CounselorThe University of Connecticut is committed to each hockey player, and all of its student-athletes, as a total person. Participation in athletics is important, but it represents only one aspect of the players college experience. At the University of Connecticut, academic achievement is the primary concern. Impressively, for the past five years the Connecticut student-athlete retention rate has been 99.0 percent. The University's commitment to the student-athlete is a dual one. Participation in athletics is not viewed as an obstacle to the attainment of one's educational goals, rather it is seen as a complementary activity. Each supports the other. Athletic excellence is stressed, but academic achievement is never compromised - indeed, it is given the utmost priority. The University realizes that the hockey team and all student-athletes, due to their academic involvement, are required to com-

mit a large percentage of their personal time to University sponsored athletic activities. For this reason, the University recognizes the need for a support program for its intercollegiate athletes. The Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) constantly assists all student-athletes in achieving their academic goals. The CPIA staff serves as a liaison to the academic faculty, the Division of Athletics, and the student-athlete. In serving as a liaison between the Connecticut student-athletes and University faculty and staff, the CPIA counselors also provide assistance in securing appropriate support services available with the University. These include orientation for student-athletes, supervised study halls, individual tutors and tuto-rial centers (an English/Writing Center, Math Center and Reading Center), and learning skills seminars. For the past three years, the writing lab and computers have been networked to a national database which allow all student-athletes to do research at their actual computer stations.

Department of Sports Medicine Dr. Tom Trojian • Team Physician Janelle Francisco • Athletic Trainer

The Department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for the hockey student athletes to train and participate in their sport. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. They are devoted to preventing injury, rap-idly diagnosing and treating injury and maximizing athletic performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopaedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology, and psychology work in concert to provide comprehensive care for the student-athlete. The women's hockey team is spearheaded by Athletic Trainer Janelle Francisco. Physician coverage is provided by Jeffrey Anderson, MD, the Director of Sports Medicine and Team Physician Thomas Trojian, MD. The Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Specialists for the team include Edward Collins, MD of the Connecticut Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Willimantic, Barry Messinger, MD of Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery in Manchester, Michael Joyce, MD of Glastonbury and St. Francis Hospital and Robert Arciero, MD of the University of Connecticut Health Center Department of Orthopaedics in Farmington. The Department of Sports Medicine works intimately with the Departments of Kinesiology and Nutritional Sciences on the University of Connecticut campus. This affords the student-athletes with the input of several nationally recognized exercise scientists. This cooperation also keeps the sports medicine staff at the cutting edge of developments in the fields of human performance and sports nutrition. Members of the sports medicine staff are actively engaged in research that directly benefits the care of all student-athletes.

The UConn Sports Medicine team is housed in state-of-the-art facilities in the Hugh S. Greer Field House and the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, as well as a new and expanded sports medicine treatment center located in The Burton Family Football Complex. In addition to providing the finest in medical care for the UConn hockey program, the Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut administers to the daily needs of 600 male and female intercollegiate student-athletes who are competing in 24 different varsity programs. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut plays a critical role in assuring that all UConn student-athletes have 24-hour access to the finest medical support and quality health care possible. Through patient care and ongoing research and education, the department continues to provide Husky teams a competitive edge from the medical perspective.

The Women’s Hockey East Association proudly enters its ninth season of play after officially com-mencing league action in the fall of 2002. In eight short years, the conference has emerged as one of the top women’s ice hockey conferences in the nation, having sent three teams to the Frozen Four and nine teams to the NCAA Tournament in the league’s eight-year existence, including most recently New Hampshire’s Frozen Four appear-ance in 2008. In 2010, the Boston University Terriers earned the first their WHEA Tournament Championship in school history with a 2-1 overtime win against Connecticut. Providence College hosted the eighth annual tournament championship at Schneider Arena as the top seed in the tournament, claiming their third regular-season championship in school history. UNH’s Kelly Paton and Northeastern’s Florence Schelling were named Co-Player of the Year in the conference, while Wildcat forward Kristina Lavoie was tabbed at Rookie of the Year. Providence College’s Bob Deraney earned WHEA Coach of the Year honors for the first time in his Friars coaching career. Northeastern’s Katy Applin, BU’s Jennifer Arms UNH’s Katie Brock and Chelsea Furlani from Vermont all earned 4.0 GPA’s on the year to earn Hockey East Top-Scholar Athlete honors headlin-ing the list of a league-record 71 student-athletes named to the WHEA All-Academic Team in 2009-2010. Applin and Arms received the distinction for second consecutive season. Fenway Park hosted the first outdoor women’s game in NCAA history on Friday, January 8, 2010. New Hampshire earned a 5-3 come from behind victory in the game vs. Northeastern. In February 2007, the league debuted its inau-gural “Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer”. The one-day event was hosted by Hockey East schools as a way to establish a greater fan base, to raise needed funds, and to work with the specific chari-ties to raise awareness for both the league and the specific cause. In the initial year, close to $20,000 was donated back to local breast cancer charities (Friends of Mel’s Foundation and the American Cancer Society), vastly exceeding expectations. Last year, over $23,000 dollars was raised to bring the four-year total to over $114,000. “Skating Strides” has won two national awards at NACMA in the “Single Day Attendance Promotion” catego-ry in 2007 and 2009. The fourth annual “Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer” will have an event on every WHEA campus this season, as well as participation by all of the Hockey East men’s teams.

History As women’s ice hockey steadily expanded from its original status as an emerging sport to its cur-rent status as an established NCAA championship sport, it became apparent that Hockey East should seriously consider sponsoring a separate league to accommodate its five member schools that initially had varsity programs for women: Boston College, Maine, New Hampshire, Northeastern and Providence. The uncertainty remained until a split in the Eastern College Athletic Conference grouped the five aforementioned programs into a separate league, the ECAC Women’s Eastern League, along with three other unaffiliated pro-grams. Seeking league solidarity, administrators from the five Hockey East institutions acted. In September of 2001, the long-incubated idea became a reality when the athletic directors voted to found the new women’s league under the exist-ing Hockey East banner, with play scheduled to begin no later than the 2004-05 season. The five schools with varsity programs entered as char-ter members with the stipulation that any other Hockey East school that added a varsity women’s program in the future would be freely admitted to the league. Expediting the process in the interests of the participating teams, the league and the sport itself, Commissioner Joe Bertagna worked with a select-ed task force to successfully prepare the Hockey East women’s league for launch in the 2002-03 season, two years ahead of schedule. An important part of that process was the acceptance of an invi-tation extended to the University of Connecticut to join the newly formed league as its sixth active member. The triumphant effort immediately afforded the participating administrators a stronger voice in the advancement of their women’s ice hockey programs and alleviated the ECAC of continuing the maintenance of the Women’s Eastern League. Players, fans, coaches and administrators alike were all anticipating the intensified competition created by the new circle of teams that were already famil-iar rivals. In 2005, the Women’s Hockey East Association welcomed the addition of two more teams to its growing family, Boston University and the University of Vermont. For BU, it marked the inaugural season for women’s hockey as a varsity sport. Although the Women’s Hockey East Association is still in its infancy, its mem-

ber programs have storied histories that include several championships and individual awards at the highest levels of play. The first 14 ECAC cham-pionships were shared among New Hampshire, Northeastern and Providence, all charter members of Hockey East. Northeastern forward Brooke Whitney was named the recipient of the 2002 Patty Kazmaier Award as the nation’s top female collegiate player, an honor first won by New Hampshire’s Brandy Fisher in 1998. Had the award been in existence beforehand, it surely would have been won at some point by Cammi Granato, a three-time ECAC Player of the Year who led Providence to back-to-back championships in 1992 and 1993. Five years later, in 1998, along-side nine other alums of what are now Hockey East programs, Granato captained Team USA to the Olympic gold medal during the first Olympic tournament that featured women’s ice hockey as a medal sport. Granato will be inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in October for her contribu-tions to the sport. Beginning in 2009, the WHEA athletic directors voted to honor the league Player of the Year with the Cammi Granato Award. Perhaps the proudest legacy that the Women’s Hockey East Association has established is the Hockey Humanitarian Award. The most prestigious off-ice honor, and arguably the highest overall honor in the sport, the Hockey Humanitarian Award recognizes college hockey’s finest citizen each year and encompasses both male and female athletes in all divisions. Its winners have dem-onstrated outstanding contributions to society through leadership in charity work and volunteer-ism. Northeastern senior forward Missy Elumba was the 2009 recipient, as the fifth Hockey East student-athlete to receive the prestigious honor. Elumba was the 14th all-time recipient and joined former Husky goaltender Chanda Gunn, who received the award in 2004, as the second athlete in Northeastern women’s hockey history. BC’s Sarah Carlson received it in 2005, making Women’s Hockey East the first league to boast back-to-back winners.
