SACRED HEART CHURCH, LA PLATA
ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI Deacon, Religious Founder (Circa 1181-1226)
Francis of Assisi was the son of a wealthy cloth merchant in Italy. As a teenag-er, Francis sold cloth in his father’s shop. He was very good at charming the
customers. At night he went to parties with the young nobles of the town. He
loved fine clothes and everything else that went with being rich. He wasn’t much of a student, but he loved the tales of King Arthur and his knights in ar-
mor. Francis wanted to be a knight himself. When the town of Assisi went to
war with Perugia, Francis joined the campaign. A year as a prisoner of war changed his outlook. When he came home he was ill for months. He was con-
fused because everything that had given him joy now seemed empty. Francis
spent hours praying for guidance in San Damiano, an old, rundown chapel on the outskirts of town. One day, guidance was provided. “Repair my house,”
said the voice of Christ, “Which, as you can see, is falling into ruin.” He carried
bricks on his back to the chapel and began to repair its stonework. Only much later did Francis realize that the house that God was talking about was not the
small chapel but the entire church. The church of Francis’s day was wealthy
and powerful, and most people did not have the courage to take the words of the gospels literally. But Francis followed Charis’s example, He became the
“Powerello” — the “little poor one.” He owned only one tunic, a plain brown
robe with a rope for a belt, which was the garment worn by peasants when they labored in the fields. He worked with lepers, the most despised people of socie-
ty. He acted as a peacemaker between warring towns. Soon others began to
join Francis, earning their bread by working in the fields or by doing odd jobs. They preached not just to the rich but to the poor as well. And Francis invented
something called the Third Order, a way for people to live the religious life while continuing their ordinary work. Francis had an understanding of the unity
of all creation that was way ahead of its time. He addressed every created thing
as Brother or Sister and treated everything with reverence. He allowed the beauty of creation to fill him with joy. Francis became ill and died when he
way only about 45 years old. On his deathbed he composed the Canticle of the
Sun, a hymn of praise still sung to this day. Then he asked to be laid on Brother Earth naked so that he could welcome Sister Death as simply as possible. The
pope who canonized him two years later described him as “the most perfect
image of Christ.” His body rests in the basilica that was built at Assisi after his death. He is the patron saint of Italy, and in 1979 was also named the patron
saint of ecologists and all people who work to protect the environment.

Dear Parishioners,
What a week! I want to thank all the volunteers that helped with
our Annual Chicken Dinner; which was a huge success. The Parish
Dinner could not have happened without those that set up, cooked,
cleaned, served, and cleaned up…Gloria, the woman who was
speaking this week at the Family Mission, said in all her years of
travelling to different parishes, she has never seen such a "well run
parish fundraiser." She was especially moved by how our parish
members of all different ages worked together so well. Thank you!
Also, I hope that many of you were touched by the Lord during
the Parish Mission. I sponsor these Missions and talks so that you
might experience the healing presence of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Thank you to all that came out and prayed with and for the healing
and protection of your families.
Finally, this week we enter into the month of October. This
month is dedicated to two things: 1) The Rosary, and 2) Pro-Life
Awareness.
October 7 is the feast of the Holy Rosary. On this date, the Cath-
olic Navy overcame the Moslem Navy in a famous battle called Le-
panto.
At dawn on October 7, at the entrance to the Gulf of Patras, the
Christian and Moslem fleets finally came face to face for the battle
of Lepanto. If the Moslems had won, Christian Europe would have
been crushed.
The wind and all military factors favored the Muslims, but
Spanish Admiral Don John of Austria was confident. He boarded a
fast ship for a final review of his fleet. He shouted encouraging
words to the men and they shouted back. After Don John returned
to his own position, the wind mysteriously changed to the ad-
vantage of the Christian fleet. First-hand witnesses wrote about
this moment as a most dramatic turn-of-events resulting from an
"unknown factor."
At that very moment, at dawn on October 7, 1571-- as Vatican
Archives later revealed--Pope Pius V, accompanied by many faith-
ful, was praying the Rosary in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggio-
re. From dawn to dusk the prayers continued in Rome as the
Christians and the Muslims battled at Lepanto. When it was all
over, the Moslems had been defeated. Of some 270 Moslem ships,
at least 200 were destroyed. The Turks also lost 30,000 men while
Christian casualties numbered between 4,000 and 5,000.
October 7 became the feast of the Holy Rosary because of this
miraculous victory.
This month pray the Rosary with your family as we approach this
decisive election in our country that a leader will be elected that will
protect families and marriage the way God designed it, and
begin to stand up for those who cannot speak for themselves--
the unborn!
In Christ, Fr. Larry
