The mission of Team Activities for Special Kids is to build our participant’s skills through op-

portunities and successes in athletic and social situations. By giving our athletes with special

needs a positive experience we, in turn, increase their athletic and social skills. Often children

and young adults with special needs lack specific skill sets to participate in athletics and/

or social activities. By participating in a recreational league where our rules, equipment and

game play can be modified to meet each athlete’s need and ability, our athletes experience

success. These positive experiences and successes lead to overall improvement. We are often

told by TASK families that they see an increase in both athletic and social skills not only at

TASK activities, but also when participants play with neighbors, friends, and family members

as well as in physical education classes at school.

BUILDING SKILLS

Page 5: 2009 - 2010 TASK Annual Report Building For Our Future

Often children with special needs face many obstacles. Unfortunately, these obstacles can ad-

versely affect a child’s self-esteem. One of our missions at TASK is to increase self-esteem in our

participants. Many times our athletes experience difficulty in the academic, physical and social

arenas. We find when giving our athletes the right amount of support, they can and do suc-

ceed in these areas. Our successes are not measured by trophies won or points scored, rather

by little steps that aid in the improvement of overall skills. Any success - big or small - leads to

increased self-esteem.

BUILDING SELF-ESTEEM

Page 6: 2009 - 2010 TASK Annual Report Building For Our Future

Athletes enjoy interacting and connecting with each other on and off the field. Countless

friendships have been made between athletes, families and volunteers. Participants invite

each other to birthday parties, to the movies or to go bowling. They talk to each other on

the phone and text. E-mails fly back and forth with the chatter about TASK events and social

activities. TASK also is a place where parents can network, socialize and feel comfortable with

each other. Because everyone at TASK has some variation of a special need, there is an ac-

ceptance among peers and parents. Parents have commented that they can relax and enjoy

watching their child, instead of always worrying about what others are thinking, unlike in

other athletic leagues.

In addition to relationships for our athletes and parents, TASK has also reached out to the

community and has involved it in the program as well. TASK has several relationships with

the high schools and organizations that help to provide volunteers and support for the

program. St. Louis area high schools including Cor Jesu Academy, Christian Brothers

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS

College, DeSmet Jesuit High School, Mehlville School District, Notre Dame High School, Park-

way School District, St. Joseph’s Academy, St. John Vianney, St. Louis University High School

and Ursuline Academy have provided a wonderful group of volunteers to help support our

athletes over the years. It is a great experience to watch the relationships between the ath-

letes and volunteers develop as the season progresses. We have found that our

volunteers have had positive influences on our athlete’s lives. Because of their experiences,

some volunteers have even chosen a career path that includes working with people with

special needs.

Each summer since 2004, TASK teams up with Christian Brothers College (CBC St. Louis) to

provide a one-week day camp for TASK athletes. During the week, the camper’s experiences

include science experiments, dance classes, drama performances, sports and recreational

activities, arts and crafts and use of technology. TASK/CBC Camp provides 75-100 athletes

and volunteers with a great week.

Page 7: 2009 - 2010 TASK Annual Report Building For Our Future

Since 1996, TASK has provided a service to the community unlike any other. Through

acceptance, support and encouragement, TASK provides our athletes a safe environment

where all experience success. In addition, we have provided a place for our volunteers to

help the community and learn about others’ experiences, TASK has also cemented

relationships with local and national companies/corporations who help the program

through financial support and/or other donations. Optimist clubs, Knight of Columbus Chap-

ters and American Legion Posts all have supported our program in a variety of ways over the

years.

BUILDING COMMUNITY

As the years pass and the numbers of participants increase, we are actively raising

money to build our own facility. The facility would be a place where our athletes and

parents could continue to benefit from the mission of the TASK program. Open gyms,

fields and recreation rooms, are becoming more and more difficult to find. A centrally

located center would alleviate the need to constantly secure places to play and would

allow a permanent place to hold activities. It would also allow for the continued expan-

sion of the program. TASK is actively looking for land and partnerships to make this

dream a reality.
