Opening the HHR is by no means a difficult job. Carefully position an Air Wedge in place and slide in a button grabber to get a hold on the vertical locking button. Pull up on the button and prepare to receive some money for an easy lockout.

A key can be made to the HHR by using the Determinator or by removing the door lock. This car is transponder equipped using the new Circle Plus “Z” key. To remove the door lock you will need to pull the inside door panel. There are a few panel fasteners to be removed as indicated in the picture above. Begin by removing the Torx screw behind the door release pull.

There are 2 screws that must be removed in the door pull cavity. Lift up the rubber cover to reveal the Torx screws. Remove these beautiful Torx screws and have fun doing it. On the lower edge of the door is a plastic fastener that must be removed.

The door panel can now be un-snapped and lifted up to remove. You will need to disconnect the door release linkage rod. Once the panel is removed you will need to pull back the weather liner. Take care not to tear it.

It is much easier to work on the outside handle and door lock with the rear small window track re-moved. There is only 1 nut that holds it in place.

The cover can be pulled straight out once the retainer screw is removed. A view of the cover. Shown here is the bracket assem-bly that holds the lock cylinder and connects the outside handle to the latch release linkage. As you can see the lock cylinder is held in place by a wire clip.

Since it easy to remove and makes the job easier we will remove the door lock bracket as-sembly. Remove the outside handle by pivoting it out. Once the handle is removed you will see the front door lock bracket assembly bolt. Remove the bolt. Slide out the linkage rods and remove the door lock bracket as-sembly. A view of the bracket is pictured below.

The ignition lock cylinder can only be removed with a working key or by drilling the sidebar.

To service the ignition lock you must first take apart the plastic 2 piece shroud that encircles the steering column. Remove the bottom fas-teners.

ON BOARD TRANSPONDER KEY PROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS: PROGRAMMING NEW TRANSPONDER KEYS: (All Keys Lost)

1) Put the newly cut Master key into the keyway and turn it to the ON (RUN) position. A “Security” indicator light on the dashboard will stay on for 10 minutes.

2) Within 1 minute after the indicator light goes off, turn the ignition to “OFF”, then return to the ON (RUN) position. The indicator light again will stay on for 10 minutes. (Do not remove the key.)

3) Again, within 1 minute after the indicator light goes off, turn the ignition to “OFF”, then return to the ON (RUN) position. The indicator light again will stay on for 10 minutes. (Do not remove the key.)

4) When the light goes off for the third time, the new key is programmed into the computer and will start the car. Remove the key and then re-insert it into the ignition lock and start the car.

All previously stored codes will be erased. To stop the process at any time, simply remove the key and use an existing key to start the car.

FOR CARS WHERE YOU WANT TO JUST CREATE A SPARE KEY: 1) Place an already programmed key in the keyway. Cycle the ignition from OFF to ON (RUN) to OFF.

3) Within 15 seconds, insert the new, properly cut Transponder key in the ignition. Turn the key to ON (RUN) or START. The “Security” indicator light will go on and off. Turn the key “OFF”.

4) The key will now start the car. Repeat the second step for each new key to be programmed.
