Transmitter power supplies transfer 4-20 mA signals from transmitters in hazardous areas andsupply them with power. They deliver an electrical signal that is proportional to a measured valuesuch as temperature, pressure or flow from hazardous areas to safe areas. The power supply andsignal are transferred through the same conductors in 2-wire transmitters allowing only 4-20 mAsignals. The power supply and signal are isolated from one another in 3-wire transmitters allowingfor 0 mA signals. These mA signals can then be repeated on the safe side of the isolator or can beconverted to other usable signals such as voltage. SMART transmitter power supplies repeat thetransmitter current in addition to a digital signal, which is modulated onto the 4-20 mA signal.

SMART transmitters can be calibrated remotely. This allows the transmitter’s span and zero set pointto be modified in the safe area and information on scheduled maintenance or statistical data to beaccessed on-line. SMART transmitters normally operate in a 2-wire mode. This 2-wire connectionis usually interfaced with a hand-held terminal or a PC for data transmission or accumulation.

P+F SMART transmitter power supplies are shipped with terminal blocks to allow easy access tocommunication leads. SMART transmitters from ABB, Bailey, Chessel, Edress+Hauser, Fisher-Rosemount, Foxboro, Honeywell, Smar and Yokogawa have been successfully tested with P+Fisolators. Please note that some higher communication frequencies require use of the KFD2-STC3-Ex1 or the KFD2-STV3-Ex1. These isolators are rated for frequencies up to 40 kHz.

This single-channel isolator powers andrepeats the 4-20 mA signal from a 2-wiretransmitter in hazardous areas. This isolatoris specially designed for transmitters withentity parameters less than 28 V.

The open circuit voltage of the isolator is 18V with a minimum of 16 V at 20 mA. Thetransmitter must be connected to terminals1 and 3 so the 4-20 mA transmitter currentflows into the measurement circuit acrossterminal 3.

A maximum load of 1 kΩ can be connectedbetween terminals 8-9.

This single-channel isolator powers andrepeats a 0-20 mA signal from a 2- or 3-wiretransmitter in hazardous areas. It can alsorepeat a 0-20 mA signal from a currentsource. This isolator is specially designed fortransmitters with entity parameters of lessthan 28 V.

Two-wire transmitters are connected toterminals 1 and 3 so the 0-20 mA transmittercurrent flows to terminal 3. A minimum of 12V at 20 mA exist between terminals 1 and 3.

The power supply is available on terminals 1and 2 in 3-wire transmitters with thetransmitter current flowing to terminal 3.Approximately 16 V are available at 25 mAbetween terminals 1 and 2 for the transmitter.

Terminals 2 and 3 are used for connectionsin applications requiring repeating sourcecurrents. This configuration has no terminal1 connections.

The SMART transmitter power suppliessupply a 2-wire SMART transmitter within ahazardous area and transfer the analog 4-20 mA signal from the hazardous area tothe safe area. This isolator is designed toprovide a sink mode output on the safe areaterminals.

Digital signals which can be modulated ontothe analog signal, can also be transmittedbidirectionally on the hazardous or safe side.Handheld terminals can be connected asshown in the block diagram.

The SMART transmitters are normallydelivered with the KF-STP-BU and KF-STP-GN terminals. Connector jacks are integratedin these terminals for the connection of thehandheld terminals.
