Welcome to the DAFM Knowledge Transfer Training and CAVI Conference 2016

On Friday 7th October 2016 DAFM and CAVI launch Private Veterinary Practitioner (PVP) training for the Knowledge Transfer (KT) Scheme in Backweston Laboratory Campus in Celbridge Co. Kildare and the Glenroyal Hotel in Maynooth. Attendance at this KT training entitles PVPs to become approved KT PVPs allowing them to provide KT services for their farmer clients. This joint venture between CAVI and DAFM is a new approach and is a welcome development.

Over the past decade farmers involved in the dairy discussion groups and the Better Farm programme have achieved better efficiencies and higher gross margins from their farming enterprises. This model of farmer education is known as Knowledge Transfer and involves group-based peer learning facilitated by experts. Veterinary Ireland has long called for the inclusion of veterinary Knowledge Transfer in State schemes in order to drive improvements in animal health and welfare at farm level. The Better Farm programme identified animal health as a limiting factor in farm profitability early in its existence. The Veterinary Ireland submission to the Rural Development Plan (RDP) 2014-2020 entitled “Sustainable Animal Health” outlined the benefits to Irish farmers and the agriculture industry of including veterinary-led Knowledge Transfer in the RDP. Article 14 of the current RDP outlines the structure of the Knowledge Transfer Scheme which will run for the next three years. The scheme has capacity for 27,000 dairy, beef and sheep farmers and funding of €104M.

Veterinary involvement in the Knowledge Transfer Scheme is a new development for the profession and comes following long and sustained lobbying by Veterinary Ireland to identify additional streams of funding for veterinary practices. Vets have demonstrated the value they add to farm enterprises using the model of on-farm risk assessments during the Johne’s scheme. Knowledge Transfer has adopted the approach of on-farm risk assessment in this scheme. It is important that this move is seen to yield positive results for both farmers on the ground and decision makers in DAFM. It is equally imperative that vets embrace this opportunity, do the job at hand well and charge a fair and reasonable fee that supports the sustainability of veterinary practice. We must grasp every opportunity presented to us to ensure a viable veterinary sector going forward.

The training module was co-designed by DAFM and CAVI and is detailed below. The CAVI committee trust that the content is both relevant and practical and will lead to the successful delivery of the on-farm risk assessments in the Knowledge Transfer Scheme, better animal health and welfare outcomes at farm level and a new dynamic between progressive farmers and their vets into the future.
