Welcome to the 10th Annual Economic Summit! In honor of this milestone, the Summit committee has prepared quite an event for you. Please be sure to thank all of those who worked to make this year’s event possible: our Program Managers Heather Otter and Ginny Kinnebrew, as well as volunteers Allison Aichele, Gigi Baty, Jessika Buell, Paulette Church, Juan Fernandez, Arlene Longfellow, Doug Lyon, Emily Meisner, and Jen Simon. One thing the committee wrestled with was whether to celebrate the last 10 years, or look forward to what’s going to happen instead. The future prevailed, and we are all excited to be talking about where we go as businesses, people, and as a community in the next 10 years. Whether its trends in aviation and internet, diversifying your business markets, cybersecurity or emerging law about social media, there are new topics every business needs to be aware of to work and grow effectively.

Our speakers will also be highlighting changes and opportunities. Easton LaChapelle will welcome us with great examples of what technology can do for rural businesses like his; Joe Minicozzi will talk about density and its benefit for our communities, and we will conclude with Fort Lewis Alum Chris Waugh as our keynote, highlighting design as a foundational theme for all our work. We will also have Tabletop Discussions this year where you will be the experts- they will be great opportunities to network and learn about key subjects you and the community are facing!

Of course, this event would not be possible without our sponsors. I’d like to especially recognize Fort Lewis College and Vantiv Pay for their continued Keynote sponsorship. Please take a moment to visit the booths of our sponsors and thank them for supporting the Summit!

Finally, if you haven’t already please download this year’s Summit Web App for your phone. The Web App is your way to connect with your fellow attendees, and we will be soliciting audience questions throughout the day via the web app as well as panel feedback in the morning. We’d like to thank ImageNet for generously developing this web app for our attendees!

We hope you enjoy this 10th Anniversary event, and once again come away inspired and enriched. Thank you again for being here, and have a wonderful day.

Warm Regards, Roger Zalneraitis

Breakfast PresentationEaston LaChapelleCEO-Founder Unlimited Tomorrow, Co-Founder Impyrium

3D Printing the FutureEaston shares his experiences growing up in the area and finding his passion for robotics at an early age. With limited resources and a small bedroom, he slowly but surely made his ideas a reality. The Internet and local competitions helped gain attention around what he was doing that would ultimately lead to forming his company, Unlimited Tomorrow, around robotics. Technologies like 3D printing enable Easton and Unlimited Tomorrow to solve some of the world’s biggest problems. He discusses being a local business owner in Durango and the process for helping to grow the local economy as well as relying on other local businesses to grow.

Easton LaChappelle has been taking apart anything he could find since he was a child and is now changing industries. At 14, he made his first robotic hand out of LEGOs, fishing wire and electrical tubing. With his gradual improvement, the hand turned into an arm and advanced to a 3D-printed brain-powered invention that he could operate with his mind. After an encounter with a 7-year-old girl at a science fair whose prosthetic arm cost $80,000 (and would need to be replaced when she outgrew it), LaChappelle was inspired to turn his prototype into a practical and affordable device. Not only were his designs amazing, but his young age in addition to his self-taught knowledge of robotics started to make an impact. President Obama shook hands with one of his arms and has traveled the world spreading the message that you can learn outside of the education system including a TED talk. At 18, Easton founded Unlimited Tomorrow, which is advancing 3D printed robotic arms for the use of prosthetics. Much of Easton’s work is open-sourced and is available online for free.

Future of Air Service

Air service in the United States has evolved significantly over the past decade. Airline bankruptcies and mergers have changed the paradigm, and airports have been forced to adapt to this quickly changing industry. Four airlines now control 70% of the domestic market share, the remaining carriers have been relegated to niche roles, and aircraft fleets are changing. We will review how this new industry model has impacted the Durango-La Plata County Airport and what the future of air service looks like for Southwest Colorado and the Four Corners Region.

Presenters: Tony Vicari, Airport Operations Manager (Interim Director of Aviation) Durango-La Plata County Airport

Some are considering diversification outside of oil and gas to help stabilize and grow their businesses. In this panel, hear from experts about the dos and don’ts of diversifying your business and how best to get started on this challenging but rewarding path.

Social Media and Employee Devices at WorkNational Labor Relations Board (NLRB) decisions apply to all employers, not just unions. In the past few years, starting with “the Facebook Cases,” the NLRB has limited employers’ ability to curb employee commentary on social media. Learn what you can and cannot do in this arena and how to avoid legal consequences. In addition, the session will highlight opportunities and threats associated with allowing employees to use their own devices for work (Bring Your Own Device). While BYOD practices can increase efficiencies, they may also hinder productivity and potentially increase employer liability. Gain a practical road map for approaching social media and BYOD at work and keep your economic drivers on track by avoiding unanticipated legal minefields.

Joe Minicozzi, Principal at Urban3

The Economics of Land Use: The Dollars and $ense of Development Patterns Land Use Economics is a fiscally responsible way to use land wisely. Few communities consider the important role that the value of land plays in land use planning, zoning, place making, and capital improvement planning. This session will change the way people think about the cost of development, sprawl, and the value of land. Joe will present the results of the Pueblo Study and demonstrate the market and tax revenue effect of various land use patterns. His work makes visual the tenet that “form follows finance.” To steal a line from Jerry McGuire, Joe will “show you the money.”

Joe Minicozzi is the principal of Urban3, a consulting firm created by Asheville real estate developer, Public Interest Projects. Urban3’s work in pioneering geo-spatial representation of economic productivity has prompted a paradigm shift in understanding the economic potency of urbanism and the value of well designed cities. Their studies for municipalities across the United States and Canada have affected the reevaluation of public policy and a broader understanding of market dynamics created by tax policy.

Joe is a sought after lecturer on city planning issues and his work has been featured in numerous journals and at international conferences. He is a founding member of the Western North Carolina-based, non-profit Asheville Design Center. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Miami and Master of Architecture and Urban Design from Harvard University.

Tabletop discussions are excellent for meeting colleagues with similar interests, engaging in in-depth discussions, and for giving and receiving targeted feedback. We’ve incorporated this flexible format to encourage extended discussions among small groups. Tabletop sessions will be facilitated by key leaders who will share expertise and provide a foundation for the group to delve into and produce key take-aways which will be reported back to the larger Summit audience.

Impact & Influence: Sustaining Culture as You Grow Moderator: Ellen Babers, P4 Consulting As companies grow quickly, the number of employees who “know the ropes” or “get the culture” can quickly be dwarfed by the number of new people who bring in fresh ideas and their own sense of what a company culture should be. This interactive session first explores the strength of your current culture and your leadership brand, followed by effective ways to integrate new employees without diluting or losing the company energy and vibe.

Creative Marketing Outside the Box Moderator: Jessika Buell, Marketing Concepts Squared (MC²)We all know that we need to do marketing for our businesses. Print, digital, radio, social; we create ads and go. But are your getting your money’s worth? Are there tricks or techniques your competitors are using to get more traction and see bigger results. Are there innovative ways to market that you are not thinking about when putting your marketing campaigns out there? In this tabletop session we will brainstorm ways to really THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX when it comes to marketing your company. We will learn how creativity really works and then collaborate to find techniques for inspiration, focus our ideas, and aim for marketing strategies that will really help us reach our business goals.

Innovate Your FutureModerator: The MakerLab TeamThe MakerLab provides a workshop space where amateurs and professionals interested in various fields such as electronics, robotics, software, wood or metal working, art, video, or photography can expand their skills, invent, and build new products in a collaborative environment. In order for business communities to remain competitive in the global economy, technological require an increased knowledge base for industrial innovation. In this regard, nurturing innovation and entrepreneurship is a central component of the strategy of any business. Companies need to invest and foster a talented workforce in order to stay competitive in the global economy. In this Tabletop session you will collaborate with others to make a product that accomplishes predetermined objectives. We will discuss how you can create a collaborative environment of innovation in your business. Come MAKE with us! The MakerLab was created by the joint effort of several local community members from various backgrounds and all of which have a passion from learning and creation. Your facilitators today are Ryan Finnigan, Owner of Carbon Form Design, Alexii Carey, Partner at E7 Systems, Brandon Welsh, Owner of Solutions Graphics, and Tomas German-Palacios, Owner of Kreativ Business Consulting.

Avoiding Burnout: Specifically, for You, What is Burnout?Moderator: Barbara Gormally, Studio Me Unlimited x9, LLCOne reason there is not a silver bullet solution for how to avoid burnout is because the structure of our individual personality plays a significant role. This interactive session will let you 1) identify how you specifically experience stress, 2) how your stress takes you on pathways of burnout; and 3) explore what you can do individually to circumvent burnout.

Chris Waugh, Chief Design & Innovation Officer at Sutter Health

Experience Design: Insights from Durango to Silicon Valley In this session Chris discusses the era of design in modern businesses and its practical ability to transform industries. He will unpack why Durango businesses have an unfair advantage by starting with constraints. Chris will share a number of real world examples of design thinking and its applicability to the region. Thinking like a designer can transform the way organizations develop products, services, processes, and strategy. This approach brings together what is desirable from a human point of view with what is technologically feasible and economically viable.

Chris’ journey started in Durango in 1993. Over the past two decades he’s been a part of IDEO (www.ideo.com), Specialized Bicycles (www.specialized.com), One Medical Group (one medical.com) and, most recently Sutter health, a 51,000 employee healthcare system in Northern California (www.sutterhealth.org) where he leads design and innovation.

His experience in human centered design brings tremendous value to the region and the rapidly changing value propositions of our modern business environment.
