About the ProgrammeNanotechnology is relatively a new area of science that has generated tremendous excitements worldwide. With the advancements in nanoscience and nanotechnology, scientists are developing smart nano materials, tools and products to address big challenges in improving the quality of life around the world. Some of the notable challenges are: clean, secure and affordable energy, stronger lighter and more durable materials, medical devices to detect and cure diseases, sensors to detect harmful and biological agents and techniques to cleanup environment. Keeping in view the importance of nanotechnology and its application, a seminar in collaboration with University of Albany, USA is organized. This 2 day seminar is intended to disseminate the current advancements and challenges in the development of multifunctional nanomaterials and their applications in the major areas such as energy, smart textiles, printed electronics and environment & health.

The objective of this seminar is to give an exposure on current research in nanoscience and technology and the fabrication and application of multifunctional nanomaterials for various real-time applications such as transducers, actuators, sensors, environmental cleanup, solar energy, green and nano electronics and much more. Discussion on important developments in bionanoelectronics, smart materials, environmental cleanup, tissue engineering, green technologies and clean and smart energy will be provided by the faculty members from University of Albany, USA and PSG Institutions

Nanotechnology in Biotechnology & MedicineThe last decade there has been an explosion in nanotechnology research and an increasing interest in using nanoscale systems for biotechnology and health-care applications. Nanofabrication technology has made an impact on tissue engineering and significant efforts have been put into nano/micro scale sensor platforms. One dimensional materials, including inorganic/organic nanoparticles and nanowires, have been developed for use in both in-vivo and in-vitro systems for separation, diagnostics, imaging and targeted delivery. Recent trends in this area are to develop multifunctional nanoparticles and to take advantage of naturally occurring materials and self-assembly systems such as biological polymers, DNA, and viruses to generate novel materials.

Applying Nanotechnology Principles to Energy ApplicationsAs worldwide demand for energy surges at an ever-increasing rate, there is a new urgency to improve the efficiency and sustainability of power generation technologies. One of the keys to addressing this

challenge is innovation, and some of the most promising solutions are occurring at the smallest scale - the nanoscale.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship in NanotechnologyInnovation is the creation of value through the development of new products or processes. Innovations can improve efficiency, productivity, and quality. An entrepreneur is a leader who recognizes market opportunities and creates and implements innovations to meet the demand. This topic introduces the theory, process, and practice of innovation and entrepreneurship. Topics covered include the innovation process, individual and corporate entrepreneurship, financing and legal issues in high-tech entrepreneurship, and developing an entrepreneurial plan.

UAlbany College for Nano Science and EngineeringThe UAlbany CNSE is dedicated to education, research & development and deployment of technologies. With more than $14 billion in high-tech investments, CNSE represents the world’s most advanced university-driven research enterprise, offering students a one-of-a-kind academic experience and providing over 300 corporate partners with access to an unmatched ecosystem for leading-edge R&D and commercialization of Nano electronics and nanotechnology innovations. CNSE’s footprint spans upstate New York, including its Albany NanoTech Complex, an 800,000-square-foot megaplex with the only fully-integrated, 300mm wafer, computer chip pilot prototyping and demonstration line within 85,000 square feet of Class 1 capable clean rooms. More than 2,700 scientists, researchers, engineers, students and faculty work here. In addition, CNSE provides a prototyping and demonstration line for next-generation CIGS thin-film solar cells supported by DOE. Five Universities and Institutes from Japan, India and Russia also started to exchange programs for graduate students and faculties. CNSE offers unique, world class VLSI fabrication facilities where biological nanotechnology applications can be developed and scaled up to production levels. Current nanobioscience research takes advantage of advanced nanofabrication technology integrated with biology for several purposes. Research is going on in the fabrication of nano-devices as a means to study biological processes (neuron signaling, single cell behavior, biophysics and biological assembly etc.) and also as for developing integrated bio-nano devices where biology and nanotechnology working in unison (applications involving MEMS, diagnostics, tissue engineering etc).

PSG Institute of Advanced StudiesPSG Institute of Advanced Studies was set up by PSG & Son’s Charities in 2006. The mandate of this institute is:

• Identify and establish R & D facilities in emerging areas of Science and Technology and recruit core faculty and staff.

• To make the facilities available for use by all the PSG Institutions.

• Establish research facilities in selected areas through public and private funding.

• Explore academic linkage for PSG Institutions with industries, institutions and R & D organizations at National and International level.

• Plan joint academic programmes with reputed Universities.

PSG College of TechnologyPSG College of Technology, an institution of more than 7 decades of leadership in education, is one of the pioneers in the field of technical education in the southern part of the country and committed to provide world class engineering and science education through UG, PG and research programmes.
