November 2014 LINK: “One step at a time.” “Just keep swimming.” “Keep moving forward.”

Whatever your mantra is to keep going, don’t forget the one person who

can help you through your difficulties, Jesus. Take some time in prayer

and lift up your life difficulties to Him! He will ease your heart and mind

through all the life obstacles that are thrown your way. He is our rock

and he will always provide a strong foundation to step on in uneasy wa-

ters. Lord, you are amazing in so many ways. Please be my stone, be my

rock and guide me as a vessel for you. Amen.

“Put on love, which links everything together in perfect

harmony.” ~Colossians 3:14

December 2014 LINK: It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The beauty that comes with the

Christmas Season is very apparent in all parts of our daily lives. Stores deco-

rate and play music, lawns publicly display their celebration lights, church at-

tendance goes up, and the feeling of helping others just screams! God’s love

is alive and beating heavily. 2014 may be coming to an end, but 2015 will be

the year that we should shout God’s love for the entire year. Bring on the

outward change in ourselves and others. God is at work and his work is good!

I MY CHURCH

Page 3: 2 About the over - storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/congregationalpresbyterianchurch/documen… · ware of the meaning of Advent, assuming “preparation for Christmas”

Dear Church Family,

The season of Advent (which literally means “arrival”) has been observed for centuries by Chris-

tians as a time to consider the meaning of Christ’s birth. The fact that most people today are una-

ware of the meaning of Advent, assuming “preparation for Christmas” means shopping, baking

and making travel plans, means that it is all the more important that you and I rediscover Advent

as a season of personal preparedness for the arrival of Jesus, the Christ.

The love of God that descended to Bethlehem in the form of his Son is not only a matter of glad

tidings but is the all-powerful, all-loving grace of God that transforms lives. This grace reveals

our sin and overcomes it, and this grace conquers darkness and brings light to the world. Such

transforming grace can never be achieved by human effort but only by divine intervention.

We celebrate the Advent of the Christ with the four Sundays of Advent, the first of which is No-

vember 30. These Sundays will feature special readings and the lighting of our Christmas

wreath, and the Advent Sermon Series will explore the four main themes of preparing ourselves

for Christ’s birth: Christ’s Hope, Christ’s Peace, Christ’s Love, and Christ’s Joy. As we make

available throughout the year, the sermons will be accompanied by the Daily Bible Reading Plan

and Devotional. I invite you to a daily reading and thoughtful meditation on God’s Word during

the Advent Season.

On Christmas Eve we will offer three services. The early service has moved from 5:00pm to

4:00pm this year. This 4:00pm service is structured especially for families with children who

want to come to church together. Special music and an expanded Young Disciples Time will

help those who are younger among us enjoy this special night. The 7:00pm Christmas Eve ser-

vice will feature many of our beloved Christmas Carols and music from our Choir, and will in-

clude the passing of the Christ light. At 11:00pm on Christmas Eve we will celebrate with a qui-

eter service of Special Music, Candlelight and Communion.

Lastly, let me remind you that there are many in our community who will be looking for a church

to attend during this Christmas season. Please be aware that many “un-churched” people believe

that church is like a club and you really shouldn’t show up unless you are a member. Please in-

vite your friends and neighbors who don’t

have a church home to come with you to our

church, and let them know that they will be

warmly welcomed!

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Steve

This blood drive, which is dedicated to Mark Ridinger, will be a collaborative effort

between Congo-Pres and some LHS students who have been working on getting other

students engaged. It will start at 8:30 am on Dec 20th and finish up around 2:00pm.

Red Cross said last year’s blood drive was one of the most successful drives the Red

Cross had all year!

How Can I Help?

Donate Blood

We will take 34 appointments total with a dozen of those coming from the LHS

students. The total donation process takes approximately one hour. Appoint-

ments will help reduce the wait time so you can get in and out on your schedule.

Appointments can be scheduled by calling the Church office at 743-4444 or by

visiting www.redcross.org; sponsor code: congopres.

But I can’t donate blood? We realize not everyone can donate blood but we do need a few volunteers to make

cookies and pour juice for our blood donors.

Why should I donate? Because in short, IT SAVES LIVES! One pint of donated blood can save up to 3

people’s lives. In fact, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. This

gift of life is the most cherished gift you could give anyone!

“It is with a grateful heart to know a blood drive is being dedicated in my honor

again this year. I have been a blood donor for many years and am working on my

13th gallon. After my accident a year ago, I received a transfusion as a result of

my injuries. I was so glad I had paid it forward for so many years. I am doing well

and at this drive I will give my first donation since my accident. It is my under-

standing that last year’s drive was one of the year’s most successful drives. My

hope is this year will surpass it. Thank you for your donations.”

church and our vision for ministry? Would you like to deepen your connection with the people and

ministries of our church? Then, the New Member Class is for you.

lieve, meet Pastor Steve and other leaders of our church, and have a chance to discuss any questions

you may have before deciding whether you would like to become a member of our congregation.

11:30am. A light breakfast will be served. Please contact the church office (743-4444) to sign up

Dear Church Members & Friends, It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is coming! For me, this is the easiest time of year to be generous. Here are just a few ideas of ways you can be a good steward of your overabun-dance of blessings: Donate food to the local food bank. (See page 13 for the current

needs) Donate warm coats, hats, mittens, etc. (Local Schools, NICH,

and Box Donation Locations around town) Buy a Christmas present for someone in need. (Think Nursing

Homes) Send money to an organization that gives food, clothes, and Christmas presents to children

overseas. (Operation Shoebox) Drop your change into the Salvation Army bucket. Buy a meal or a coffee for the person behind you in line at the drive-through. (Plan ahead

and attach a note to give to the person behind you, wishing them a Merry Christmas) Donate your time to a local charity. “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to

the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.” ~Proverbs 19:17

Guiding Team Update

The Guiding Team is excited to share a report with you on the Listening Conversa-

tions we conducted a few months ago. The Listening Report is a summary of the 24 in-

terviews, highlighting what the interviewees feel are strengths of our church and their

wishes for the future of the church. We encourage you to read the report and the ques-

tions at the end. Use it to launch contemplation and dreams for what you think our

church might do in the future. Copies of the report are available at the Welcome Center.

We invite you to share your thoughts from the report during a series of Conversation

Group meetings over the next couple of months. If you missed the first meeting Novem-

ber 23rd, we still encourage you to attend the next two, to analyze and brainstorm what

things God might be calling our church to try based on what was shared in the conversa-

tions. This can be an exciting time of identifying new ideas and deciding how to carry

them out. Please join us!

We are planning the second meeting during the first half of December. Watch for

sign-up sheets in Fellowship Hall announcing the meeting date and time. If you are una-

ble to attend at that time, please contact us to schedule other times during that week. Sign

up at the Welcome Center or email us at [email protected].

Dick Riggs has written a book which has some

stories of possible interest to Congo-Pres

Members. One is called “A Short History of

the Congregational-Presbyterian Church.” An-

other story is titled, “The Weyerhaeuser Kid-

napping.” George Weyerhauser was born in

Lewiston in 1926, where his dad J. Philip

Weyerhauser was President and General Man-

ager of the Clearwater Timber Company. He

was on the Congo-Pres Church Board. Little

George was kidnapped in Tacoma in 1935 and

the family paid a $200,000 ransom and he was

released. These stories and many more are

available in his book.

If you are interested contact Dick (746-0168) for more information. The

cost is $20 and a portion of the money will be donated to our church and to

help the area homeless.

ship Hour for a special Happy Birthday

Celebration for our Friends and Members!

Stop by for some cake, coffee and

conversation for your special birthday month!

On that note: Please make sure the office

has your birthday on record so you can be

added to the BIG birthday card that will ac-

company the cake! Put on by: Fellowship Ministry

Don’t forget!

All wrapped gifts

must be returned

to the church by

Sunday, Decem-

ber 14th. This al-

time for delivery before

Christmas.

Pastoral Care

Updates:

If you or a loved one

is sick or in the hos-

pital, please contact the church to let the pastors

and Jim McCracken know (743-4444). Due to

confidentiality regulations, area hospitals cannot

disclose independently who is in the hospital.

Dear friends,

Thank you for your prayers,

cards and visits. They helped

me realize that we are one

family. Now I’m at Wedge-

wood Terence but I still have

my old phone number. Thank

you for caring.
