August 2016

The time of year has come when the local car enthusi-

asts showcase their classic vehicles. As downtown Lewis-

ton gets filled with the majestic rumbling of muscle cars,

residents heads turn toward shiny chrome, comfy leather

seats, and the top of everyone’s “want list”. The owners of

these cars have poured their heart and soul into these daz-

zling pieces of metal. Some of these cars were created from

a scrap pile and over time these mechanics sanded, painted,

cleaned, and welded together a beauty. While this process

doesn’t happen overnight, their handiwork and dedication

glistens come August as they take these babies out for a test

spin around the loop.

When we feel like a pile of scrap metal and not destined to be anything, here

comes an almighty “mechanic” that helps put us back together. He spends his time

cleaning our past, hammering out the dents, sewing together broken hearts, and re-

assembling us to create a masterpiece so we can shine for Him! He wants us to be his

muscle car. The muscle car that turns heads toward the shining light of Jesus!

Blessings,

Sarah Emerich ~LINK Editor

Dear Church Family,

It is with great joy that we share the news that we have selected a candidate for

our Associate Pastor position. McLane Stone, alongside his wife Charley, is beginning

the process of moving to the Pacific Northwest as he prepares to finish the remaining

requirements for his ordination: a three month chaplaincy program in Spokane and

completion of ordination exams in the fall.

After both graduated from Whitworth College in Spokane, McLane and Char-

ley moved to New Jersey so that McLane could

begin his doctoral studies at Princeton Theologi-

cal Seminary. During his time in seminary how-

ever, McLane felt strongly the call to serve in

full time ministry rather than to remain in aca-

demia, and thereby shifted the focus of his stud-

ies. After graduation, McLane and Charley

moved to Washington, DC, where McLane

serves as Director of Youth Ministries at Nation-

al Presbyterian Church until this August, at

which time he and Charley will move to Spokane

to begin and complete his chaplaincy program

and ordination exams. Once completed, at the

end of December, McLane will be eligible to receive a call to our church in January of

2017 as an ordained pastor. At that time the congregation will have a chance to hear

McLane preach and vote on accepting him as Associate Pastor.

McLane is originally from Orcas Island, Washington, and Charley is from Spo-

kane. They are excited at the prospect of living closer to family, enjoying life in a

smaller city, and spending more time in the great outdoors, hiking and fly fishing. It

has been a true pleasure to get to know this delightful couple over the past several

weeks, and we are humbled by God's great faithfulness and love to our church

through this search process. McLane's love for Jesus and desire to share that love with

others has been evident from the start, and we have received nothing short of ardent,

glowing reviews from former professors, advisors and colleagues. In addition,

McLane and Charley were able to visit the Lewis-Clark Valley at the end of May. Our

committee, Pastor Steve, and our church staff were able to spend several days with the

Stones, and we are excited about the future we will share with this godly couple in our

midst.

McLane and Charley have expressed their desire to visit when able after their

move to Spokane, as they would love to get to know our church body during their

transition time. We are excited for you to meet them! Please keep them and our church

body in your prayers as we move forward. What an awesome God we serve!

In Christ,

Members of the APNC www.congopres.org 3

Hey, Congo-Pres Kids! You’re invited to join

me, Kelly Paynter, for Children’s Church each

Sunday morning in August! Come to the 9:00am

Worship Service and right after the Young Disci-

ples time, all kids who are in Preschool through

Fifth Grade are invited to join me upstairs Pil-

grim Hall for Children’s Church!

*A note to Parents: Children’s Church will

conclude at 10:15am. At that time, you may

come get your child(ren) and take them to the All

–Church Fellowship time in Fellowship Hall or

allow them to remain upstairs, with our fun child-

care providers. Please pick them up by 11:00am.

We will not dismiss the children to Fellowship

Hall without an adult.

Dear CPC Church Family,

I LOVE VBS!!! As I reflect on

Walk This Way VBS my heart is

full and overflowing! I can’t ade-

quately describe how grateful I am

for this body of givers at Congo-

Pres. If you helped in ANY way,

you were part of bringing the gos-

pel of Jesus to the kids who came

each Wednesday night. “Thank

you” doesn’t begin to describe my

deep appreciation to all who

helped with VBS. Whether you

donated money for craft supplies

or dinner items, helped with crafts,

welcomed families at registration,

taught the kids Bible stories,

cooked dinner, played games with

our kids at REC, sang, took pic-

tures, helped with clean-up, said a

prayer or gave a word of encour-

agement: THANK YOU!!! VBS

was a TEAM effort and it would

not have been possible without

YOUR valuable contributions of

time, talents and resources. Thank

you for loving the kids of our

church, and the LC Valley, and for

providing an opportunity to make

memories while growing in their

faith and knowledge of

Jesus Christ.

For His Glory,

Kelly Paynter

Lewis Clark Bible Institute Lewis Clark Bible Institute* (LCBI) will begin offering classes this coming September using classroom space at Lewis-Clark State College. LCBI is a community based educational organi-zation that exists to equip followers of Christ for ministry in their homes, community, local churches, and the mission field. At LCBI, believers can receive training in biblical and doctrinal studies, ministry, and leadership to be prepared to do the work of ministry (Ephesians 4:11 – 16).

Four 12-week, one-hour per evening classes are being offered this fall. The tuition for each class is $35 and the course book is $17. The classes meet 9/6/16 through 11/22/16. They are:

“You and Your Bible” (6:00 – 7:00pm) “Biblical Leadership” (7:15 – 8:15pm) “New Testament Survey” (6:00 – 7:00pm) “Growing Towards Spiritual Maturity” (7:15 – 8:15pm)

For additional information and to register for a course(s), go to www.lcbibleinstitute.org. *A Bible Institute is a non-degree granting school of adult education, primarily for lay people, designed to provide advanced knowledge and practice in biblical and doctrinal studies, ministry and leadership skills in preparation for the “work of the ministry.” Questions? Women’s Fall Retreat Camp Spalding &

Clearwater Lodge

September 23-25

Ladies, mark your calendars and talk to

your friends about the Fall Women’s Retreat

scheduled for September 23-25 at Camp Spalding and Clearwater Lodge. This

will be an awesome time to be refreshed with a powerful message from the Lord,

as well as a time for fellowship and enjoying the beautiful outdoors on Davis Lake

in the Selkirk Mountains.

The speaker will be Nancy Moomaw Goodwin, the pastor of Latah Valley Pres-

byterian Church in Spokane. She has 25 years of diverse ministry experience from

missionary work in Thailand, to serving a large congregation in Houston, Texas,

to nurturing small rural churches in the Inland Northwest. Her retreat topic will be

“Encountering God in Hidden Places.” Scholarships will be available. For more

information, contact Leslie at 208-790-4799.

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into

the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny.

Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all

the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on."

– Mark 12:41-44

When giving, it is important to remember that God values our offerings differently than we do. In God’s eyes, the amount of the offering does not determine its value. The value of the widow’s offering was much higher because

she gave all she had. God is looking for that kind of dedication and trust from each of us.

The Juvenile Corrections Center in Lewiston offers churches the opportunity to provide religious services to the residents

of the facility every Sunday. Four area churches provide this experience on a monthly basis. Crosspoint Alliance is

looking for a few more people to join their team of 6-8 adult volunteers on the first

Sunday of every month from 2:30 to 4:30. The male residents are generally 14 to 18 years old, and attend on a voluntary basis. If interested, you can attend one

time without a commitment.
