Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park was established in 1991 andhas an area of 2,014 square km (778 square mi). The terrain of the park ispredominantly mountainous with alpine plains. The park is one of the largestprotected areas in Europe and is also one of the most biologically diversewith over 2,600 different flora located in the park.

Rocca Calascio is a mountaintop fortressin the Province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo firstbuilt in the 10th century. Campo Imperatore, which translatesto Emperor’s Field is an alpine meadowformed by a high basin shaped plateaulocated above the Gran Sasso massif,the largest plateau of the Apennineridge. Known as "Little Tibet", CampoImperatore is the perfect area todiscover by hike in the summer andskiing in the winter.

The Calderone glacier is the only glacierwithin Apennines mountain range, locatedin the Gran Sasso d’Italia mountain group.It lies just beneath the Corno Grande,the highest peak in the Apennines. “IlCalderone” is Europe’s southernmostglacier. The Calderone glacier shouldbe ascended in late spring, from the endof May to the start of July, when thereis winter snow.

With its 320 km, the Horse RidingTrail of Gran Sasso d'Italia is thelongest horse riding trail in Italy.It crosses the territory of 3 Provinces:L'Aquila, Pescara, and Teramo andallows visitors to see all the uniquenatural features of the park. Guidedtours are offered during the spring,summer and fall months.

Visitors will find various mountainbiking trails throughout the park. Themountain bike circuits connects thevillages of: Campotosto, Assergi, SantoStefano di Sessanio, CastelvecchioCalvisio, Calascio, Isola del Gran Sasso,Prati di Tivo, Pietracamela, Ceppo andBussi. Many of the trails surround theGran Sasso and allow visitors to witnessthe unique beauty of the park. Thereare guided tours and a rental serviceavailable from June to October.
