FROM THEADMINISTRATOR'S CORNER

Summer is here and the livin' isfast. We are so busy with Fly-lns,Dances, Picnics, Parades, UNCelebrations, Conventions,Birthdays, Weddings, Graduationsetc. that we have barelv had time

to get this newsletter together.

', Jim Anderson - Getting the directory out - Thank You

CONVENTIONTrack 2 Chicagowas quite asuccess, eventhough theattendance wasa little down thisyear. Everyonewho was therewill of coursehave their ownpersonal memories, images highlights andfantasies of this memorable event.

Sharing Convention and Hotel space with the IMLwas a very interesting experience and despiteHerb Caen's opinion, the leather communi$ has ahell of a lot in common with the Gay LesbianSquare Dance Community. A lot of the leatherpeople (yes there were leather women inattendance) came to the Honky Tonk QueenContest and also came to the Leather Tip and theLearn to Dance segment.

This is thefirst time Ihave been ona Fun BadgeTour and Ithoroughlyenjoyed thisone. lt wasespecially fundancing infront of Buckingham Fountain. (The fountainserves as the opening to Married With Children.)Our glorious hostess was also quick to point outGay bars where certain famous Chicago MassMurderers picked up victims.

The Honky Tonk Queen Contest was wonderful. ltwas quick, clever and Surprise - Leather oriented.Dead Sybil returned. No comment.

The Grand March was a real mess. lwish everyconvention would stop trying to do somethingdifferent and just go back to a traditional GrandMarch. Nothing can bring tears to ones eyes and alump in one's throat lrke a true Grand March.

The higher the hair , thecloser to Heaven. I'vegot the pictures to proveit. Especially when Joeylet the waitress wear hishair , exposing hisshaved head. ThanksGold Rush Hair.

The Hyatt Regency wasquite a hospitable Hoteland the BIG bar, locatedin the lobby provide a vantage spot to meet friendsand ogle the crowd. After the bar closed friendscould meet and talk in front of the mainregistration desk, and they did and did and did.

Page 25: 1995 The Western Star

Definitely the highlight of the convention for me wassomething that happened in a Mainstream sessioncalled by Mike Desisto. Suddenly my oppositecame over to me and asked, "Aren't you GaryGray?" He then looked at my badge and said, "Ofcourse you are, I knew it. Do you remember me, I'mHugh Glenn. (who dances with Times Squares inNYC) We knew each other in New York." Well, itwas truly wonderful renewing a friendship after thirtyyears. Hugh and I had gone to New York with 250other young people from Texas to work at theWorld's Fair. This is, to me, what Square Dancing(especially Square Dancing with Gay/LesbianClubs) is about.

Thank You, Chicago for a wonderful convention andof course we are all looking forward to see whatStars, Thars & Cable Cars has in store.

WSD PRE-PARADE DANCE ANDFREEDOM DAY.PARADE

Our annual Pre Parade dance was held SaturdayJune '17th. Kris Jensen from Albuquerque was thecaller for both the dance and the Parade. She is avery good caller and shows the influence Bill Eylerhas had onher. Wishwe couldhave hadmorewomen atthe dance.Foggy Cityshould bethanked forcoordinatingthe verylargeParadeContingent. This wasone of the longest parades in recent memory, butKris will probably never get over the high of callingwhile hundreds of thousands cheered. Kris was intown with her partner Turtle Bear. Thanks toGolden Boot Ranch for putting them up.

A BIG HOWDY Y'ALL

Five and Lh years ago, when I learned to do my

first allemande left, I had no idea I would rise to

the lofty heights of becoming Grand High

Pooh-Bah, sorry, I

mean Administrator

of WSD. Square

Dancing has brought

many wonderful

things to my life and

l'm happy to have the opportunity to give back

some of what I have received.

I speak for everyone when I say Thank You to

our outgoing board members for all of your hard

work, and a special thank you to Gary for

everything you've given of yourself to help make

Western Star an enjoyable club for everyone.

And with our board members who are here for

another year and with the addition of a couple of

new faces, it loola like a fun year ahead.

And speaking of fun... our current

Mainstream class will be honored with a special

Graduation Dance Friday November 17th. There

will be a Buffet Potluck starting at 7 PM and

dancing for all at 7:30. (admission $5) I

encourage all of you to come on down to EVRC

and cheer on our newest class.

Our friends in Diablo Dancers are having their

"Follow Your Neighbor to the Christmas Ball"

Saturday December 2nd in Pleasant Hill with

Mike DeSisto call ing. And since I 'm on the

subject of holidays... don't forget to mark your

calendar for our annual Christmas Parry and gift

exchange (\'ou know the rules) Wednesday Dec.

llth at EVRC.

Convention will be here sooner than any of us

reatize and to all you rusty dancers out there - the

next Plus class is starting Monday November

20th. Be there and be a square (dancer) !

Be good to each other.
