Westem Star Dancers Board MeetingFebruary 15, 1994

r Camp Caz -- Mike attended the board meeting ofDiablo Dancers to determine their interest inco-sponsoring this yea/s Camp Caz event. Theboard was delighted to have been asked toparticipate, expressing their continued feelings ofloyalty to Weslern Star for its support of theirfounding. Essentially, however they declinedinterest at this time.

The board appreciated Mike's update of this openitem and can use this input in planning lor theevent this lall.

The agency which manages the scheduling ofCamp Caz has sent out contracls for this year. This does nol need immediate attenlion but weneed lo brainstorm more about what we willbedoing about this Jall 's event. Tabled.

I Parade -- Western Star coordinating the paradecontingent this year.

r PLUS Class -- Mosl of the recently graduatedMainstream Class is now attending Plus.Additionally we have some non-members lromoutside the gay club community who wish toparticipate.

The board expressed officialTHANKS lo RussKing for picking up the reins in finishing theteaching for the just graduated Plus class. Great tohave this support when unfortunately unforeseenscheduling problem arose with the regularinslructor.

r Dance Night -- First one was quite successful.

Callers have been delermined through March.

r Garage Sale -- Ramona is working with Most HolyRedeemer to try to schedule our sale to be held atLive Oak schoolon Apri l9 and 10.

r Treasurer gave his report. There was a nice profitfrom the Valenline's Dance. There was a verysmall loss associated with the Ron Libby dance butlhis had been anticipated. Very pleased to havebeen able to have him to kick o{l our return toDance Nights.

r Round Table -- Felix advised that the 1996Convention committee will be requesting that eachclub sponsor a dance to raise money for the event. There was discussion about the amount of moneyneeded and our concern that there be closeaccounting.

Moved and seconded that we sponsor a dance forlhe convention.

David Baker, RN, MSN, andRichard Copeland13-B Belcher Street, San Francisco, CA 941'14

March 2 ,1994

Dear Western Star Dancers,

We owe a very special thank you for your supportof staying Healthy With HlV. At the Eagle BeerBust on January 2, 1994, members of WesternStar raised seven hundred twenty six dollars andfifty cents ($726.50) to help us in our efforts toeducate people with HIV/AIDS about options forsupporting their health. As members ol WSD,our gratitude lo our fellow club members isdeeply felt. we do regret that we were unable lohelp with the work and join in lhe fun, due to priorplans.

The mission ol Staying Healthy with HIV is toeducate people wilh HIV/AIDS about healthpromoting trealments that can improve theirhealth and quality of life. Many options areavailable, but limited access to information makestreatment choices difficult. We present seminarsthat empower participants lo lake charge of theirhealth care and establish a personalized heallhprogram. The seminars provide information andfacilitate decision making about complimentary, allernative and holistic treatment options that areavailable now, often at very low cost and withdemonslrated elfecliveness. We have alsopublished the book Staying Healthy With HlV,which includes much of the inlormalion from theseminar, and more. For more information, talk tous at WSD events or call 4151255-2327.

Our practical approach has encouraged manypeople in their elforts to stay alive and healthy. And in these difJicult times, the need for hope isgreat. We all must offer whateverencouragement we can. Robert M. Young, CSWFebruary 22,1994Memorandum to All Member

Australian Club:As many of you may already know, we have

been contacted by a club in New Soulh Wales,Australia, which has been lounded by a mannamed Stuart Mauchline. lt is a club which grewoul of an HIV+ social group, and has expanded tothe general gay population ol the area (10 hoursfrom Sidney and 2 hours from Brisbane - gol igure!) .

The club is planning to apply for IAGSDCmembership at this yea/s convention inWashington. The members, however, have littleor no discretionary funds, as many live ongovernment pensions, or, in Stuart's case, is theprimary caregiver of a person living withAiDS/HlV and has little income.

A ticket from Auslralia to Washington DCwould cost approximately $1,500.00. That is outol Stuart's budget at this point in time, as it is outol the Associalion's budget AND jurisdiction.

To this end, however, Darrell Ertzberger and Iare making a complelely ad hoc request of eachof lhe member clubs to hold some kind offundraiser to buy Sluart a ticket and allow him topresent his club for membership personally.

Darrell and I appreciate your club's efforts andhope to making lhis a successfulventure.

Very truly yours,Bob Young

FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR'SCORNER

-What can I do lor WSD?' is aquestion that I seldom hear. ltseems that the club has twotypes of members, those thatdon't ask and just pitch in and dowhat is needed, and those that

merely pay their dues, and occasionally attend certainevents. The people who have been chosen asMembers of the Month lor the last few months havecertainly been the types that don't ask, they just do.This month is no exception.

MEMBER(S) OF THE MONTH

April Member(s) of theMonth are two of themost dedicated, hardworking Club Members.Felix Fornino and BobLeslie have done somuch for the club. Felixis currently serving onthe WSD Board ofDirectors, as well as theConvention '96 Board. Bob has been doing the WSDNewsletter mailings during 94. They have alsocoordinated many events, Dances, Picnics, andGarage Sales. Many times they have opened theirhome to the club for things like making Club Vests.Any time we need something done and done right wecan always depend on Bob and Felix to get the jobdone. Yellow Rocks and a huge Thank You to AprilMembers of the Month, Felix Fornino and Bob Leslie.

A FOND GOODBYE

Another couple that have done so much for the clubare moving (have moved) to Sacramento. Tod Tyronand Tim McKenna have been great members,Coordinating events, attending events, serving oncommittees and just being around for everything. These guys will be missed, but will be around foractivities occaisionally. Good Luck on your move.

CLUB NIGHTS

Our Club Nights are still going smooth, but we doneed more participation from members. The largerthe attendence is, the more fun we seem to have. This is a great oppurtunity to dance with our localcallers. Calling in May will be Ron Masker,DonGreco and Dave Decot.

GARAGE SALE

The Garage Sale was a huge success, great weather, some real finds, (watch out for some real suprises atthe next Christmas gift exchange) and we raised$634.82 for the lnsurance Fund. A Thank You to allwho helped and especially Ramona who arranged theevent with Most Holy Redeemer.

PLUS GRADUATION DAI.ICE

Ron Masker will be calling at a Graduation Dance forour soon to be graduated Plus Class on May 11. Theevening will be $3.00 for all who are not graduatingand Free to the Graduation Class. The wholeevening will be devoted to Plus Calls. Come by todance with the graduates, share some refreshmentsand have fun.

TRIMESTER MEETING

We will be having a SHORT trimester meeting onMay 18 before the Club Night Dance. The meetingwill begin at 7:15 and end at 8:00 sharp. This will befollowed by Don Greco calling MS and Plus. Thereare some important issues that need membershipattention, so please try to attend.

Or areyou a lapsed square dancer, come back to the lold, and join us on Mondays to relresh your minds andbodies. BRADLEY WHO? BRADLEY BELL..THAT'S WHATI

Bradley Bellis e personal telophone directory ol square dancers and their friends who are either membersof gay clubs/organizations or who lust want to b€ listed in ths directory. Yes, it's for real; we have aFictitious Business Nams Statement on file with the City and County of San Francisco, we have a bankaccount under the name of Bradley Bell, and this is the Seventh Edition, List€d will be your name, address, home phone number, and birthday. (tf you don't want one of these data elements to bo published, just don'tgive it to us.l There are no club/organization affiliations indicated in order to avoid the confusion of peoplebefonging to more thsn ons group. Another benefit of subscribing to qrcdley Bel/ is receiving a birthdavgreeting from the Eradleys-assuming you gave us your birthday to publish.

Who is pubfishing Bradley Bell. Members of the Bradley family, that's who. So, what's the Bradley family?A group of people who are close friends who found each other through square dancing. Since pefticoatsare a visible part of ths square dance sceno, we chose our name in honor of the fictitious Bradley familyfrom ths tefevision se(ies Petticoat Junction. We consider ourselves from Hooterville, so we needed atefephono company for our town; thus, we c/eated Brddley Belltokeep in touch.

Collectively representing about 60 years of square dance experience, we believe strongly in the communityof gay square dancing. We aro very social people, and, through Eradley &ett, we hope each of you will beabl€ to keep in touch with others whom you meet at conventions and fly-ins. Some folks ask if they canbecome a Bradley. That's like asking before you're born if you can choose your parents. We are a family, not an organization. W€ do. howev€t, share our friends with 6ach other thrcugh Eradtey qell.

What is all this "alternate name" stuff ? Well, Bradley is our real names, but we have other names we useprotessionally. we think everyone should have two or three persona, and Bradley Betl gives you thsopportunity to declare your real s€lves to the world. Camp names, nicknames, titles, CB handles, andinternet addresses lall into this category.

THE INTERNETI We encourag6 you to use tho altsrnate name section for listing your internet address. lfyou have a computer and havs access lo the intsrnet, you'll know it. Your address may be longer than thetirst or last name space, but just write in your address, and wa'll make it work.

Does it cost money? Yes, but it's not expensive. Believe us; the best things in life are not free. Checks8re appreciated since they provide a rsceipt for you, but you may send cash if you feel comfortable sendingsmall amounts of money in the mail. You can't buy thE Bel/ with American Express; but you shouldn't leavehome without it.

Bradley Eell is published in September €ach y€ar. The number of subscribers continues to increase, withover 3OO subscribers last year, lt's tunl lt's excitingl lt's usefull (And you can't even say that about afotof " impromptudates". ) Ofthetotal subscr ipt ionslastyear,T4.soAwererenewals. Of thelg8gor ig inalsubscribers, 5Oo/o wer€ still listed in 1993. Our subscrib€rs lik6 us; they know we care.

We sincerely hope that you will want to be a part of this growing publication. Feel free to make copies otthe subscription form End provide them to oth€r membgrs of your club/organization and families.

Remember, with Bradtey Bell, 'You'rc iust a yollowrock away.'

Dear Fr iends of Shady Rest Dancers,

Encfosed are several subscript ion forms for the 7th Edit ion of Bradtey Bettto be publishedby ear ly October , 1994. Inc luded is at least one copy of a reduced, one-s ided vers ion. Wehope you wi l l consider inc lud ing the subscr ip t ion form in your August newslet ter . l f we,vemissed the deadl ine for August , your September edi t ion may not be too la te. We can st retchthe September 1 deadl ine a few days.

ff your rnembers are not famil iar with lhe Bell , the text accompanying the subscript ion formshould be adequate for a complete understanding. Right fu l ly so, c lubs are protect ive of the i rmembership d i rector ies. Bradley Eel laugments the c lub d i rectory by a l lowing your membersto dec ide to share the i r address and phone number on an in ternat ional bas is . To ourknowledge, we've never had a d issat is f ied customer. In our many d iscuss ions wi th dancers,we have learned that there are two main reasons people do not subscr ibe: (1) lack ofknowledge that i t exists and (2) procrastination that leads to missing the publication deadline.

l f you need more copies, we'd be eternal ly gratefu l for your making copies.

THE INTERNET! They ' re out there, and we know i t . l f your members are on the in ternet , weencourage them to use an "a l ternate name" on the subscr ip t ion form for the i r in ternetaddress. This is hot s tuf f . Your members may want to subscr ibe to begin bui ld ing the i rin ternet d i rectory.

Also enclosed is a f lyer about the ce lebrat ion of Bradley Nat ional Hol iday in 1994. l t 's forreal ; no k idd ing. A l l 1994 subscr ibersto Bradley Bet l , w i l l receive a $1 of f the admiss ion.You don' t have to be a subscr iber to at tend the dance, so everyone may at tend. Beverageswi l l be prov ided f ree of charge. l t 's our way of say ing, "Thank you!" to our subscr ibers.

We had a b last a t "Stars and Squares Forever" in Washington, DC. Wi th our many f r iendswho renewed their subscript ions at the convention and those who subscribed for the f irstt ime, subscr ip t ions for th is 1994 edi t ion are a l ready c lose to 2O0. So, don ' t de lay. We lookf orward to receiv ing new subscr ip t ions immediate ly , but we must have them bySEPTEMBER 1 , 1994, to ensure the l is t ing. As a lways, i f your members are running aday or so la te, just g ive a ca l l or send a EMai l to le t us know i t 's on the way and g ive us therequested in f ormat ion.

Remember, with Bradley Bell , "Yo:J're just a yel lowrock away., '

You make the f r iends; we' l l keep t rack of the i r addresses for you.

FROM THEADMINISTRATORS

CORNER

The AwardsDance was quitesuccessful. lt wasa real pleasure tosee so manyfriends enjoyinggreat calling. Theattendance was

not as great as I was hoping, but it was greatdancing to our local/club callers. I really enjoyedgiving the awards and want everyone that Iappreciate each and every member of this club.A special congratulations to every recipient. Thecomplete list will be in the next QuarterlySelection, which will be out soon.

MEMBER OF THE MONTH

August Member of the Month is JimAnderson. Jim is a recent addition to WSD, butis very active. Last year at Camp Caz, Jim saidhe would be interested in working for the club.Well, I took him at his word and when the database manager position became available, Jimwas asked. He has been taking care of theDBase every since. Jim is also responsible forthe Directory. He also coordinated theValentine Dance. A huge Yellow Rock forMember of the Month for August, JimAnderson.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Ballots for the new Board will be in themailsoon. (You may already have them)Please vote for the candidates of your choice. This is your club, so choose your candidateswith care and vote for someone who willrepresent you well. I think we have a fine listand all of them deserve a place on the Board.

CAMP CAZ

Camp Cazadero is just a month away. Weneed everyone to hurry up and register. This

year we are offering a special deal of $85 for theweekend. This is a great deal and it should bean especially fun year. Andy Shore is a greatcaller and will be lots of fun. Mike and Jim havepromised an all new improved camp with lots ofsurprises.

There are many more activities alreadyscheduled, and many more in the formulatingstages. So, my hopes for the New Year is thatwe willall continue to be healthy, active in theclub, stop the back biting and bickering, andabove al l DON'T STOP. DON'T SLOW DOWN!

ANGEL ISLAND

Many of us took the journey to Angel lsland. The Basic Class was well represented by 6members. They danced, had fun, and are noweligible for many dangles. The gossip isendless, but just let me say that there weremany other clubs represented; MidnightSquares, Foggy Gity, ElCamino. El Diablo, andSacramento. We really had a wonderfultime.Thank you, Jim Pellman for making this awonderfulday in the sun. A specialThanks toRon Masker for making the non-square dancersfeelwanted.

From The Administrators CornerThe last Camp Caz is now behindus. lt was a memorable event inevery way. The hard work put in bythe Camp Coordinators, MikeSellers, Jim Pellman, and LeeGianf rancesco, was certainlyevidenced by the lavishness ofevery thing. For those who missedit, l 'm sure you wil l be hearing aboutit for years to come. And of coursethose of us who attended can dineout the stories forever. Just askanyone what their favorite momentwas and I'm sure you wil l get sixty

different answers.

The Coordinators surprized everyone with a daily newspaper thatprinted Gossip, Gossip Gossip! And then Mike and Jim emceedthe show to end all shows, The Mr. and Mz Camp Caz Contest.Mr. and Mz. this year were Felix (Sophie Whinestein) and Ron(Pookie). Unfortunately since they are the last they wil l reignforever.

The cabin decoralions were fabulous. Can vou believe a ChineseLaundry.

It was a great retreat and so much fun. lt is always wonderful tobe with people from other clubs in a really relaxing atmosphere. We had dancers from Foggy City, El Camino, Midnight Squares,Diablo Dancers, Capital City and Prime Eights... What a mix. Thecall ing of Andy Shore and Ron Masker was superb as usual"

Although there wil l be many things I wil l miss about not going toCaz, the one thing no one wil l miss is that horrible drive.

GARAGE SALE

Hang on to your goodies for just another couple of weeks, WSDwill be having a Garage Sale on Novemberl2 and 13. There are
