From the desk of GABE 6 SILA DELL'ANGELO, rotesidentA NNJSDA

Two weeks into 1983 and we have such good feelings about square dancing in our NNJSDA clubs. The "Fellowship Pro-gram" is progressing, clubs are on the move and so are we:

e have visited more than a third of the association clubs and have en-Dyed every moment. The dancing has been fun the warm welcome of old riends and new ones, keeps our energy level high::: Your Association fficers are everywhere, visiting clubs and enjoying the good times. All of us plan to keep on the move just as we know the clubs are. At

east seven clubs are on their way towards earning the "25th Anniversary ward" (attending 3 Association specials, with required number of squares) nd many more ace "on the road" towards earning the "Fellowship Award" visiting 10 member clubs with required number of squares). Our heartfelt thanks for your support of the programs. We're proud of

11 who are taking an active, rather than a passive role in this Anniver-ary Celebration. THEY are making good things happen. Even if the clubs ) not complete the requirements, there is an "award" - the satisfaction f having been actively involved; the joy of having shared happy times, ad the pleasure of the fellowship, which is so much a part of square dan-Lng. We'll be looking for you at our specials...look for us at your dances.

tere's so much to look forward to, GRAND SQUARE Booster Ball on January ); the abundance of class level dances throughout our area, graduations, id the 111941772.3th" on July 30. Have a wonderful 1983.

V SQUARES -- eta/Lk, N.J. ( MS 2 g 4 FAiday Cat! Kumpi School, Mitdhed Tut/Lace.

Not too many costumes at this year's Haiioween masqueraae dance, al-though those who dressed up looked great. We'd like to encourage more to participate next time around. Maybe we need to advertise it more in ad-vance. Your reporter can attest to the fact that its no problem dancing in costume - just a little warm. Can anyone forget Maurie Berl inrut's answer when he was asked who he was dressed up in short pants? Standing next to his wife who was dressed in a long black gown and craggy-faced mask, he replied, "I'm the son of a witch!" Under direction of Lou/ Jeanne Cole, our club made a very successful raid early this year and we are expecting to have another later. Raids are always fun and we enjoy being on the receiving end as well as the traveling. We trust everyone enjoyed the holidays and are planning to attend all the winter dances. Watch for the location of our second February dance, it's not at our reg- ular location. (AV on page 10) Nancy/Aht Clough 201-499-0925

WESTERN WHEELERS -- Pal& Ridge, N.J. ( QS ) 2 Wed; 4 Sat Conghegatkonat Chuhch, 131 Pa4cack Road

Happy New Year everyone! Western Wheelers began the Holiday season with a gala Christmas Party for club dancers & students. Bruce Ver-tun on the squares & the Shearwoods on the rounds made a happy time for everyone. The New Milford Tenderfeet raided our club with 4 squares, & students of Western Wheelers/Belles & Beaux, Hix & Chix & See Saw joined in the fun. What an enthusiastic bunch they are! We will continue to welcome students on 2nd Wednesdays thru graduation. Toys brought to the party in lieu of donations were presented to the Goldberg Day Care Center of Westwood. Mrs. Majette, Education Director, was on hand to receive them. Many thanks to all who participated with preparations and made it such a smashing evening.

Our New Year's Eve Celebration was equally a success. With Bruce and Ed/Les we danced (and ate) the old year out and the new year in. Hope to see many of you on the dance floor in '83. We have a terrific schedule of callers for the spring and you don't want to miss our Chinese Auction in January. (AD on page 7 ) Bob/Liz Sly 201-391-0248

WEST MILFORD FLUTTERWHEELS Newlioundeand, N.J. ( 1 5 3 FArdaym Pcutadi4e Knote Schoot, Pahadide Road

Congratulations! West Milford Fiutterwheels on celebrating your 5th Anniversary in Square Dancing. We have met so many beautiful friends throughout the U.S. by being involved in this activity. We would also like to thank NNJSDA for their terrific idea on raiding 10 clubs and 3 Association dances during the year. it was the special boost in the arm that we all needed and mostly all of our club members are looking forward to going on all of the raids that are planned.. And it is also good being visited by so many clubs too. So it works both ways. Congratulations to our new graduates of last year - Mark/Maria Silverman who had their square dancing interrupted for awhile by being the proud parents of twin girls, Rachel and Sarah. Our Nnvamhar Pia Fc.ctival was a hug. right down to the last crumb and the last tip of the evening. We could have danced all night to the calling of John Kaltenthaler who made the dance so interesting no one wanted to sit out - even one tip/ As always our circle of rounds, under the direction of Doc/Peg Tirrell, brought out the best in our round dancers. Tenakill's Christmas dances are always great and this year was no exception, even Santa enjoyed the festivities. We are moving along extremely well with our visits aiming towards the Fellowship Award in honor of the NNJSDA's 25th Anniversary Celebration. Let us all join hands in this fellowship -what a great idea! Since space is at a premium we're unable to list all names of our new grandparents - be it the 1st time or 6th time around. You all know who you are and we congratulate you and look forward to having these youngsters as members of TT somewhere around 1995. We invite you to come on down and enjoy one of the happiest and friendliest clubs around with the finest wooden floor in town. Looking forward to greeting you at our next dance. The club celebrated its 30th anniversary with a gala pot-puck supper in November. After the meal, several members, prompted by Frank Poole, remin-sced about past events in the club's history and the mouth watering hot danish we used to have after our dances. We were visited by past-presi-dents Hans/Elaine Schmidt who left s/ding 17 years ago. Our Mrs. VP Shir-ley Sherlock supplied beautiful cakes for the occasion. With Christmas and New Year's Day past, we're hoping for nice weather on our dance nights in the new year, so that all our friends can turn out for our dances. 'lease come; we miss you when you don't. Fkank/Maxie Poole 201-342-3375

SWINGIN' STARS Maywood, N.J. ( + 2 Satuxday Maywood Avenue School

Here it is a brand-new year and, despite the myriad of crises which prevailed during 1982, we dancers finished the year with our heads held high. And why not? Our favorite activity provides us with the best anti-dote in the world. Each year greater numbers of dancers are appreciating this fact. Add to the foregoing the rampant computerization which is taking place. Do you like the idea of being some number at the end of a terminal? Apparently many people don't and we square dancers can number ourselves among them. We enjoy our activity. We like the music, the dancing, the color, and, most of all, we like the people. All of which are part and parcel our 'Antidote". We, at Swingin' Stars, want to wish all of you much happy dancing in 1983. Once again - round dancers it's 8 PM for you, and squares - 8:30 as usual. See you around a square.

Atpine School, Andove't Road

Fall has been exciting for the Spinners. Our Spinner Beginners are do-ing a beautiful job & looking forward to their first class dance. Hallo- ween brought out four colorful clowns-claimed to be Dottie/George Simmons & Helen/Carl Ostertag-But we don't know. They never looked like that! Trudy/Jack Austin as "Little Bo Peep" and "Little Boy Blue" had problems rounding up those sheep! Horns don't work with Sheep Jack! Poor Sheep were terrified by Stanley Lach & Martha Strait as a murdered man and his spotted dog! The evening was topped off with a raid by those terrific Lakeland Squares - loved having you! Bob Mitchell, our unexpected guest caller, kept things lively in spite of the strange events of the evening.

On a more somber note, John Kaltenthaler was mourning the recent loss of his brother. Our deepest sympathies, John.

Of interest to dangle collectors, the Spinners will be awarding dangles to out of state dancers, so come on out and add a dangle to your collection.

Our November dance was noteworthy for the marvelous calling of Dalt Young. Always great fun to dance to, and a spectactular array of fall table decorations created by the students of the horticultuarl department of the Sussex County Vocational School. A very impressive display! Don't forget , come dance with us. (AD page 41 )CaAot/Neit Atbxecht 201-875-5002

"Double your pleasure, double your fun" has been our unofficial theme this fall. We have doubled last year's attendance at many dances. Our raids on Lakeland Squares & Belles & Beaux followed this theme, with over four sets on each. We give a hearty vote of thanks to the West Milford Flutterwheels and Covered Bridge Squares who raided us. Our raid chairman George/Norma Williams have at least two more raids planned. Look out, it could be your club! Our first class level benefit in November for burn victim member Art Simpson was a fantastic success with Fred Weiner calling to a record 125 people. Fred is turning out to be our own rumplestiltskin. He's spinning our class into pure gold! We are getting to be afraid that by graduation we'll need club classes to catch up to them. We have thoroughly enjoyed our many excellent callers this fall, and look forward eagerly to their returning in 1983.

Well! Here we are successfully recovering from all the parties and S/D specials which have made the holiday season so enjoyable. We were especially impressed with the enthusiasm and skills of our class at their Christmas Dance. Speaking of classes - our graduates of last year are rapidly becoming skilled plus dancers.

During the holidays Somerset Hills honored Y Squares & Hill City with fun filled raids and Hill City also returned the honor. In November Lee Kopman called at a spectacular special at which he introduced the delight-ful "stagger" series of calls. Lee we do want you to know that the door

prize was not intended to be your beautiful white cadillac. During Oct. & Nov. the writers had the pleasure of touring across the country and en-joying S/D at many clubs. For those of you who haven't danced in far distant places, we want to assure you that S/D is a universal language. You will be welcomed, as we were, with open arms, hugs and all the usual pleasantries which add to good S/0 life. We danced with a club which wouldn't allow us to pay the dance tee; another which gave us special badges; and one In the south where the caller advised his members to put on their best behavior because there were Yankees present! So we advise you all to go forth and try another club. (See p. 2704 nom about the NEW S/D VIRECTORY)But also try our friendly Somerset Hills crowd, too.

SOLITAIRES -- Wc. Orangel N.J. ( 2$ ) 1 g 3 Sunday

Community Nou4e, 242 Main StAeet

Hats off to our other officers Troc. R. Walcult; Sec. E. Meyer; Dl. D. Hoggart. The duties given to Raid Chairman Lou, seems to agree with him. A Tribute to our past president Joan Maccari, who is missed by visi-tors and members. The enunciated formula you instilled as President is now priceless as gold to the officers. Joan, perhaps you can gladden all by visiting us again on the dance floor or joining us at the Diner if you can schedule it amongst your hectic scholastic endeavors. Our last covered dish was equal to none other! At the dance, "Nothing Special", Bob Tarrant made up a dance singer called "Nothing" and dangles with nothing were given to all. Interesting and informative was the LUST programs- Jeff, Joe, Thelma & Sue "DEACON' can confirm/ Everyone welcomes the return of Velma and hope to see Hank soon. We welcomed recent gradu-ates at our Christmas Dance. "Seasons Greetings" from our club to yours. (AV on p. 33) Thelma wand 201-923-5518

RUTGERS PROMENADERS -- New SAunAwitk N.J. ( 2S ) 2 6 4 Thuuday DougtaAA Cottege Cente4

Hello, again! December 9th saw the graduation of 29 new dancers into the wonderful world of mainstream/QS dancing. Welcome, gang! We know you'll have a ball! Over the past semester, Non-student Rep Dan Koft arranged for us to raid two clubs: Y Squares & Solitaires. It was all such fun that we're planning on doing it again next semester, but Dan's not telling where! As we at Rutgers buckle down to another semester of books, classes, & Square dancing, we hope that everyone had a joyous holi-day & wish you all a year full of friendship and fun. Happy Holidays.

RICHMOND DANCERS -- CdAtteton Co4neu p Staten IAtand, N.Y. (+) 2 S 4 Sataltday St. Yohe4 Lutheran Sehoo4 640 Manor. goad Richmond Dancers, under the guidance of our Raid Chairpersons, Tom/Mary

Gorham, is well on the way to qualify for the Association's Fellowship Award. We are excited by the program, not for the special recognition that may come to the club, but by the inter-club cooperation that is en-couraged by the program. Square Dancing will remain viable not through competition, but by projecting an image of cooperation among Association members. The visitation program introduced by NNJSDA is one that should stimulate the important goal of fellowship and cooperation among clubs.

Our Christmas Dance was a great success thanks to the Dance Chairper-sons who took over and tarred out the plans when Donna Anderson ended up in the Fallston Hospital in Md, Frank Riviccio, the Bellottis and all who attended. As a token of appreciation and in keeping with the spirit of the holiday season, every lady who attended our Christmas Special was pre-sented with a fashionable neckchain. Hopefully, the good spirit we shared during the holidays will continue throughout the New Year. 14 Ftmence/Joe DiSano 212-761-2451

Happy New Year to all! Another year of square dancing has passed us with many happy memories and looking forward to square dancing in 1983. We ended up the old year with a successful raid to the Sussex Spinners. Later Mike/Marion Lattig hosted a party which was enjoyed by all. Our class students are progressing quite well and we all enjoyed dancing with them at our Christmas dance. Congradulations to Betty/Walt Harris on be-coming new grandparents of twins. Plan now to keep the second dance in March open for our annual dinner dance at the American Legion in Wharton.

RAMAPO SQUARES -- Oaktand, N.J. ( ADV ) 2 6 4 Satufiday 7Yekghts cchoot, Seminote Avenue

When Staten Square Set gave their presidents, Grace/Gene Lucarini, en-graved silver medallions in 1968, to express the club's gratitude and ap-preciation for their service and devotion - they could hardly have forseen that the Lucarinis would be so thrilled with their award that they'd decide to make it an annual event under their sponsorship. But that is what hap-pened. Since then, the Lucarini Award medallions have been given to out= standing couples in square dancing who exemplify these exacting criteria: Non-professionals who have been in square dancing for 10 years, five of them as club officers or members of the Executive Board of the NNJSDA, & to have generally fostered and enhanced the growth and development of S/D through their special efforts and enthusiastic support of S/D related ac-tivities. Up to this year 3 Ramapo current members had already won these coveted awards: Helen/Lou Hardy; Doc/Peg Tirrell & Jinny/Bud Allison. It is our pleasure to report that at the SSS Anniversary dance in November a fourth Ramapo couple GLORIA/AL BRANDT, joined them. The honor couldn't have happened to a more deserving pair. Since 1965 when the Brandts joined Ramapo they've been deeply involved in every aspect of the club's operation; fostering goodwill and friendliness by joint ventures with other clubs; running special workshops on separate nights to encourage not-too-sure-of-themselves dancers to come to the regularly scheduled club dances; serving as angels; officers;organizing and participating in national and local demonstrations and parades; being instrumental in getting old timers back for Ramapo's 30th anniversary celebration two years ago, for which, by the way, they wrote a history of the club. Four and a half squares journeyed to Graniteville that Saturday when the award was officially presented. It was a most gratifying and enjoyable evening. Our congratulations.

Meantime, Ramapo's 1982-83 season has been rollicking merrily along. We've had a better than average attendance at all our dances. Computerized squares continue to ve very well received. Peg/Doc Tirrell on Rounds with their usual ease and expertise. If you enjoy dancing on the advanced level, we guarantee you'll have a great time at all our dances!

MERRI-EIGHTS Eaat 8AunAwick N.J. + 5 3 FAA:day Vag Rama/L.4k' ad School, Rua Lane.

We're gratified by the response from the club to our first Blood Drive scheduled for the New Year's Weekend. More than 30 have signed to donate with several others helping with administration, etc. Our New Year's Eve dinner dance tickets were sold out early in December & we are looking forward to another super evening. In November more than 3 sets from our club went on a Mystery Bus Ride to Leisure Squares in East Stroudsburg, PA, Imagine our surprise when one of their club members announced that he was dancing in England, recently, & saw a Merri-Eights pin on the host club's banner. The surprise was even greater when Beryl/Chet Daszkiewicz, who had come with us that night, said they had pinned the banner when they were vacationing and dancing in Great Britain a few months ago. Yep, with square dancers, it really is a *small, small world".

We're busy making plans for our Club's 25th Anniversary Dance, to be held in May 1983. We're also planning a super all day picnic with fun, games, dancing & eating to be held late Spring or early summer. Hats off to our friends from Country Promenaders, who put on a demo for wheel chair patients at JFK Hospital, getting several of the patients in sets. One patient who participated was a Merri Eighter, Herb Jennings, who had been injured at work earlier this year. Judging by the glowing reports, we hope there will be more, regular demos at hospitals & nursing homes all through the year. Those of us who have danced for patients know how much they look forward to seeing us year after year.

Don't know if its the good food, great caller, the wonderful location or the warm feelings, bur we're happy to say our dances have been very well well attended, and we look forward to seeing our friends, old and new throughout the year. Our New Years Eve Dance is behind us, and 1983 is upon us, with a good cast of callers, and fun dances ahead. Correcting our bulletins d GRAND SQUARE ADs: Bruce Busch, not Fred Fields, will be calling our first March dance; Look for announcement of dance hall change for the second March dance with Carl Hanks. Glenn Cooke is calling our second dance in Apri 1. Our class has progressed very well in its first half lessons. Bob Benner has them panting and perspiring with rapid fire calls, and they're keeping up. The class could use more angel couples to supplement the faithful few who show up every session. Your reporters, and the club offer wishes for a speedy recovery to Gene Koenig who has just gone through by-pass surgery.

Our year has gotten off to a great start, The npan dance was ""i ce cream nite". We especially thank the Merri-Eights for a bus load of rai-ders in November. it was a delightful evening; enjoyed them immensely. We welcome all our newly acquired friends from NNJSDA, to come to our "neck of the woods" to raid us or just to dance. November we demonstrated for the Senior Citizens at Courtland Plaza. Many thanks to our club mem-bers who have demonstrated for us. We are grateful to Ed Miller, former president, and his lovely wife Charlotte, for "pinch hitting" as caller at our demos. He was just great. We welcome our new members Bill/Lucile Smith, Lou/Joan Aro; glad to have you. Our Christmas Dance, as always, we had a great time & everyone looks so colorful. On the sad side, Russ Hammond fell and fractured his knee. We'll miss you Russ. We are all wishing you a speedy recovery to join us dancing real soon with your wife Martha. Good luck. Happy New Year - Square Dancing.

We are well into our dance season and dancing up a storm & enjoying every minute of it and also having our many visiting friends with us. Our callers Bob Mitchell & Mike Foley are doing their excellent calling as they have been doing in the past. Our class under Tom/Jan Allen and the calling of Pal Johnson, their instructor, is coming along in great shape & showing much enthusiasm. Several of the students have been dancing with their S/D attire for a few weeks now. The Halloween & Thanksgiving dances were well attended & a good time was had by all. Our Halloween dance was a real screamer. Art Jacobs won for the funniest costume, Kristine Oug-land-the most beautiful A Bill/Mae Chapman - the most original. They also provided everyone with a little excitement during the parade around the hall when time ran out and there had to be a caesarian birth as the time had come. Mike Foley was quite lucky as he witnessed two within two weeks. His son was born two weeks before. So when you attend one of our dances you can be sure of enioving yourself. We will be looking for you in the very near future and giving us the privilege of dancing with you. In Oc-tober we were raided by the Spinning Wheels of Wayne and their entrance routine is a very unique one to see.

Some food for thought - IF square dancing has provided you with many hours of relaxation & entertainment - if you wish to keep S/D healthy & exciting - you can make an important contribution for now & the future. Nominations for your 1983-84 S/D Association officers are being accepted. You may know couples who are talented, enthusiastic leaders who should be proposed for the vacant offices - but only with their permission. You may wish to volunteer yourself - which is Just fine. NNJSDA Presidents have appointed the following Nominating Committee: Pat/Jim Campbell(Merri-8 1 s)„ Roger/Fran Lund (Hix & Chix,Covered Bridge) & Harriette/Sol Koved (M T ) Chr. Your ideas & suggestions are most welcome. Please contact any com- mittee person or call the Koveds at 201-276-7213. We thank you.

in October we ceiebrated our tenth anniversary with a wonderful square dance. We had a great turnout of regular dancers and friends from nearby clubs and in addition were raided by the Western Wheelers. We are proud to have completed ten years and are looking forward to many more years of happy dancing. In November we had our fourth annual "Crazy Hat Dance" and it was so much fun. Some of our members have terrific imaginations, wear-ing flower gardens on their heads, and toy railroad tracks sewed on an engineers cap, a gigantic Stetson and many more. Last month we were very much concerned when one of our former presidents Lucille Deroche un-derwent open heart surgery and a few weeks later were so happy when she came to visit one class night. Keep improving Lucille; we're looking forward to seeing you and Bill dancing again. All of us at Kittatinny Rangers wish a Happy New Year to all square dancers! Keep dancing!

passed away Nov. 23, just one day after their 46th Wedding Anniversary. Active in R/D for umpteen years Winnie/Dale are responsible for doubling the dancing pleasure of many S/Ders, not only here in NJ but all over the Eastern Seaboard. They made the intricate seem so easy; their joy & fun of the dance was evident in all their activities. The R/D & S/D world has lost a valuable friend & we all extend our deepest sympathies to Dale.

We Tirrells wish to thank our dancing friends for their kind expression of love & concern shown in the sudden death of Peg's mother, whom many of you knew as GG. Your many notes reaffirmed she was a mighty special lady & that her special T L C had carried over in the myriad of phone calls & details she handled for the S/D activity. It does help to know others care. 24

Mickey/Aaron Weiss are our Raid Chairman & doing their best to assure our club has at least 10 raids. Richmond raided us in December when Jerry Salisbury called. Another year has gone by and tor Isle Squares it was a wonderful year. This is of course due to the hard work of the officers and the committees. And a special thanks to all of our friends. We hope all of you enjoyed the holiday season and that Santa Claus was real good to you. If you missed our Christmas Dance you missed one of the great ones. With Manny Amor calling & Shirley/Frank Bellotti on the rounds. Fran Palladino was chairperson for the event & did her usual good job. Don't forget that our second dance in February & both dances in March are being held at a different hall. Our Beginners class on Tuesday nights, which represents three clubs on SI is doing real good. And it's all because of the bang-up job of Marty Clifford. Thanks also to all of the angels who are helping out. By the time this issue is released we hope Lou Cella is back on his feet & that Donna Anderson has recovered from their auto accident in Balti-more. We hope that 1983 will be a great year for all of you. Happy Dan- cing. HOWL Powett 212-761-2021

At this time of year when we all count our blessings, we are doubly blessed to have Virginia/Bill Boscia as our VP's. They're always on time, organized, faithful, & provide "extra goodies" for us. Thanks much, Ginny/ Bill. We're also grateful to our Demo Chairman Betty/Bob Daley, who bring much cheer into the lives of shut=ins, such as our trip to the Bell-air Nursing Home in November. (Pleasure works both ways.) Raid Chairman Annalou/Ray Kuenzler are busy lining up dates for us to travel to other clubs: We had 5 squares to West Milford Flutterwheels, 2 squares to Tena- kill Twirlers, 41/2 sets to Cloverleafs and are looking forward to visiting Swingin' Stars, Hanover Squares, & the NNJSDA's Booster Ball at Montville in January. We've been proud to present Traveller's Badges to: Mike Cervince, John Hutteman, Kay Lisa, Bob/Nnncv Glueck. Terry/Gary Grochowsky, Connie Rushke, Hilda/Ray Sears, Buddy Goodell & Dot/Dave Pinand.

We have forty students who are continuing classes with Dick Pasvolsky -we thank all our "angels" who've made classes interesting, and hope our students enjoy our December Christmas party. Bob/Nancy Glueck are the Class Coordinators. It was decided this year, as in past years, instead of exchanging gifts with one another at the Christmas Season, we would all bring toys for the Holley Child Care Center in Hackensack,NJ.

Looking ahead for the New Year - we extend an invitation to everyone to visit with us - especially our Snow-Ball in January and our Valentine's Dance in February - more about these in our ad. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!

Happy 1983! The square dancing year is nearly half over and we are looking forward to still more fun evenings and a lot of good dancing. Those who attended our Dangle Dance in October had the opportunity to

earn 4 dangles - if you are a collector be sure to watch for the date of this annual dance next fall. We have celebrated our 32nd birthday as well

as each of the holidays. Our first dance in February is our President's Dance - all presidents free. Our student class is progressing very nicely under the direction of Bob Benner, & has been invited to our Valentine

Dance. Put this on your calendar: We have two specials coming up in months with five Tuesdays - March Joe Fioretti will be our cal ler & in May Chuck Stinchcomb will call, with Ron Rumble on Rounds for both specials. With our RID workshops and/or review in place of one tip, it seems every one is brushing up and the rounds look better than ever. We've moved again! This time to the FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH ON SPRINGFIELD AVE., off NORTH UNION AVENUE in Cranford. This is a much bet-ter location because it's right in the HEART of Cranford and is very easy to find. This is where the last two New Years Eve dances have been held.

Our annual Halloween Dance was a howling success. We were raided by Country Promenaders and had visitors from many other clubs. A rollicking good time was had by all. Bill Dann is a great caller & Ron Rumble was his usual superior self cueing the Rounds. Lois Green outdid herself with what looked like hundreds of beautiful decorations all over the place. We had a wonderful assortment of cakes and cookies brought by the members.Af-ter the dance we were all so busy having our refreshments & door prizes we completely forgot about the dangles. Dale Gangaware brought 150 to the dance and left with the same amount! Not one person inquired about them. If you missed getting your dangle, just contact Dale.

We have 2 sets of students being taught by Jules Pozsar. They are do-, ing well & enjoying themselves. We met them at our Christmas Dance. Our fall bus trip was a huge success. On our way at 8 AM the Pietruchas handed out their song sheets & we sang our way to Hyde Park with Rae Tellefsen providing the music. We toured the plush Vanderbilt Mansion & property & could not have chosen a better day to view the changing colors of the tree leaves. We were then taken to the Hudson Valley Winery where we had lunch, & square danced. We know why the bus was dark S. quiet on the long way home.

We visited the Flutterwheels & had a very pleasant evening. Our many friends there made sure we had a good time. Another social event was our annual dinner dance & movie night with 28 at the movie & 17 for dinner. We raided a fast growing club in our NNJSDA-Spinning Wheels and a club having a successful rebirth-Grand Prowlers. Come dance with us. Happy Holidays to all our many friends.

This article was written before the holiday season & it will probably appear in a later issue, therefore all of us at Colonial Squares extend a belated holiday greeting & a sincere wish for a Happy New Year to all. Now for some tidbits about our club. Our C-I Workshop and review is moving along like clockwork and before long we will change over to a full C-I dance beginning some time in April 1983 and continue every Thursday thereafter. Keep that date in mind & plan to come over & share an enjoy- able evening with us. Come sooner if you like. Dave Smith with his smooth style is whipping US into shape, & he is working hard to get us through some of the more intricate steps, even so, there were times when the floor looked like Grand Central Station during rush hour, especially when he taught "Scoot and Plenty" --amid the confusion you could hear Dave's calm, reassuring voice saying. Oh My God! What a mess. let's get out of this." Of course, we regroup and get back "home" and Dave starts over and over again until everyone has it down pat. That's what workshop is all about, isn't it? Tony/Caltmen Sottentino 212-447-0612

Schoot, Rastyn Avenue

Christmas came early for the Cloverleafs, when Mr. & Mrs. Claus, John/ Mary Aquino, presidents of the Hix & Chix and over 4 sets, raided us in December. With Will Larsen on squares & Tirrells on rounds, a very fes-tive time was had by all. This raid could not have come at a better time, since we have lost money at every dance for over two years and we were about to fold. Now we will be able to hold out for another month or so... Many thanks Hix & Chix. We have a great list of callers and are the only Plus dance within an hours ride on the first Friday of each month. So come on out and dance with us. We have relinquished our Al/A2 dance-work- shop on the third Friday because of objections filed by the Tenaki I I Twir-lers with the NNJSDA. (AD on page 28 )Louisette/Bilt Nantz 201-384-8524

BELLES AND BEAUX -- Olen Rock, N.J. Q,S 1 5 3 WedneSday Bykd School, Doxemua Avenue

By the time you read this the holiday season will be a happy memory, & we certainly will have things to remember. We started celebrating early with our Ed Foote Special & I'm sure our many guests enjoyed him as much as we did. Our thanks go to those dancers who remembered to bring a toy for our annual Christmas charity dance. The Holiday dance with our class members was great fun-what terrific dancers they're going to be. Paul Brody has done a wonderful job of bringing them along. We won't forget our New Year's Eve party - good calling, good friends, good dancing, good food & no "morning after" to spoil the fun! But the best thing about square dancing is that the fun doesn't end with the holidays. At Belles & Beaux the fun goes on all year along.

AL"E"MO SQUARES -- Skooktyn, N.Y. ) 2 5 4 Sunday Avenue R Tempee, 1609 Avenue R

For a club that hasn't been in existence too long, AL"e"MO SQUARES is making very big strides -- some of our members have extremely long legs. If they don't trip over them, we'll continue to go places. The enthusiasm for dancing that permeates our club hasn't withered one iota; only the dancers wither, occasionally, after a full night of dancing. However, after a cup of coffee or two, they're completely rejuvenated and are ready to start all over again. I wonder if there is something in those coffee beans that we don't know about. Someday we'll find out maybe! Our

club was thrilled to be featured in the Burdick's magazine AMERICAN SQUARE DANCE feature article "Best Club TricI4' in their December issue for our decorations that covered everything square dance wise in our club from "A" to "Z". (AV on page 24) Bea/At Axebtod 212-854-2401

The SQUARE PINCUSHION remakes a Patchwork Skirt....

In answer to several requests, I'll redo an old favorite. This particular skirt is made of all equal size squares.(Easier that way).

First, you must determine the length of skirt you need. Since this will be a 5 tier skirt, divide your length by 5 and add 1" for seams(i.e. 2 *" seams). That is the size of the squares you need to cut. For example:a 22" length divided by 5 = 4 2/5" 4.1" m 5 2/5" squares.

Choose fabrics that are light in weight; these can be leftovers or pieces purchased on purpose. You will need 10 squares for the top tier, then 20, then 40, then 80, and the bottom tier will need 160. A total of 310 squares.

You can simplify your cutting by making a template of cardboard or other firm material and trace around that. Be sure your grain lines are vertical or horizontal, not on the bias.

Sew the squares,at random, together to form a long strip for each tier. Gather the top edge of tier 2 to fit the lower edge of tier 1. You will notice 2 squares gather to fit 1 square in row above.

ir-Fr 41411101131M

HAW° t

It's easier to handle if made flat and sew the final seam at the end.

Sew final seam leaving enough \\ open for a zipper and insert

according to package directions.

Finish the waistband with a matching piece to one of the squares (or use unbleached muslin). Finally, turn a fine hem under at lower edge and sew by machine, or you can finish it with hemming lace and hem by hand.

If adjustments are necessary, shorten at the top tier, or lengthen by adding eyelet ruffling or a matching ruffle to one of your fabrics to the lower edge.

Finally, make a couple blouses, to match some of your fabrics, varying the sleeve lengths to accommodate the seasons. And of course, some related ties for hubby.

CAUTION: ALWAYS launder fabrics before using-better to play it safe- one bleeding square could ruin it all.

Enjoy and any questions, call or drop me a line,

Ftom the desk o4 Betsy Gotta, pus dent CCNJ THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS - is often that there are

not enough experienced ones at lessons. Some people start to angel, but get trapped by other commitments. Other experienced dancers might like to help, but can't

commit every lesson night for 9 months. Angels help your club, and from my point of view last years class members, although willing, are often not strong enough to help others. (Don't stop coming!) We need the more ex-perienced dancers, too. A rotation list could be a solution. Check with your teacher as to how many angels could be used. Ask club members who would angel one night a month, then set up a schedule, rotating these an-gels to share the burden. An "on call" list of members who live close and might come out to fill a square is also a possibility.

QUARTERLY SELECTION COMMITTEE tepokta... For the quarter beginning Jan, 1, 1982, the MS Quarterly Selections Committee has chosen one new move for workshops at MS dances. The

move is DIVIDE TO A COLUMN. Starting formation - 14 Tag formation (Wave be-tween facing couples). Outsides Divide & Touch 14- Wave ends and adjacent centers Cast Off 3/4. Move ends in right hand columns. Timing is 6 beats based upon the timing for Cast Off 3/4. The Divide and Touch can also be accomplished in this same time.

CALLERLAB's Plus Quarterly Selection Committee, chaired by Jerry Schat-zer wishes to announce that there will not be a Plus Quarterly Selection for the first quarter on 1982. The committee, consisting of approximately 100 members, recently held a ballot regarding this decision. No selection was made since there was no consensus for a suitable call for the +QS.

CALLERLAB is pleased to announce the results of the 1982 election to the Board of Governors. Bob Van Antwerp (NV) was elected for a third time. He is joined by Bob Osgood (CA) who was a charter member & who has now been re-elected. Also re-elected after a year absence was Lee Kopman (NY). Elected for the first time are Wade Driver (TX), & Don Hanhurst (FL). Our congratulations to the successful candidates. Congratulations to the other nominated candidates - they include Bill Addison (MD), Carl Anderson (OK), Don Beck 04A), Bill Davis (CA), Ed Foote (PA), Betsy Gotta (NJ) Larry Ingber (AZ), Martin Mallard (CAN), Osa Mathews (CA), Roger Morris (CA) & Francis Zeller (KS). ROUND DANCE HIGHLIGHTS Ctete/Gait Potk, NNJSDA R/D Lidiaon

The NNJRDLC Fall Festival held 11/7/82 at Bridgewater Voc-Tech School was a very successful and Gala occasion. Excellent cueing by Council Leaders, beautiful door prizes, brand new R/D banner, and a hard to resist refreshment table contributed to the enjoyment. Applause was loud and clear for Nancy/Max Nosker's club members who demonstrated two round dances. Many thanks to Shirley/Frank Bellotti for over seeing all the details which provided Round Dancers with an enjoyable interlude.

The more we become involved in the Council activities, the more we realize how fortunate our area is to have such a dedicated, cooperative group of leaders. Their concern & support for each other is very evident. Perhaps that is why our R/D movement is expanding. We are happy to report that more leaders & their clubs are sponsoring individual "Afternoon of Rounds" so that there are more opportunities for our dancers to mingle & mix. 89 Bogert Count, Mahwah,NJ 07430 201-891-0658 CLOUD NINERS - Tue6day,Chniat Chukch,Newton,NJ - DockIty 201-995-2133

However, we were very lucky to have Betsy Gotta & Fred Fields call for us the two nights Carl was ill. Our second annual Christmas Cookie Dance brought out over a dozen platters of luscious goodies. Round dancing is alive and well and living at Valley Squares. Peg Tristram's Beginner Class has come a long ways. And, Roy Gotta has a floor-full of terrific looking ball room dancers. Please remember that our second dance in Feb. will be at the Village Methodist Church in Warren. See our map on page 28 in the last issue (Holiday Issue) of GRAND SQUARE, and, of course, our fly-ers. Let Carl & Roy put a little sunshine in your dancing this winter. We promise you, they'll keep your feet warm.

Their write up got fouled in Christmas mail, but rest assured they are still a most exciting 8 growing club. IN mid Feb. they'll have George Potts guest calling while the Fields go on a cruise to the Caribbean.

Space & other problems precludes printing a monthly calendar. Instead we will include this universal calendar of all NNJSDA members regularly scheduled club dance night. By comparing the actual month to this page. a dancer can determine who is dancing when. The "Where" and other pertinent info will be found in each club's write up and/or ad. We will list on this page all cancelled dances that we hear about. It is the responsibility of each club to keep us informed, Thank you for your cooperation. Happy dancing. PLEASE are there some old timers, or clubs, out there who can go back even further & find Vol. 2 so we can make a copy and complete our files? We'd appreciate it. 52
