    THE WAY OF LIFE

    B. N. EnolaTo the one who has embarked upon

the journey into the Kingdom of

Heaven, all metaphysical ideas aremore or less interesting, and have theirplaces and uses. But what he is mostconcerned about is what he shall do toaid himself in his progress, and how he

shall conduct himself in his relations tohis environment and fellow men so asto gain the most benefit spiritually. Tocome to a proper understanding ofwhat is needful, let us give a little con-

sideration to the worldly side of life.We see men of the world strugglingand striving in the endeavor to realizetheir various ambitions and purposesin life, and meeting disappointments,

unshakable by any agency, is the evi-dence of overcoming. It is the basisof enduring peace, and the founda-

tion of an ever growing happiness. Thus it is seen that life is nothing

more nor less than a great spiritualschool. And each of us is in a class byhimself, and the class is made up ofthe various circumstances and condi-tions of his life best suited to promotehis spiritual growth. It is a reflectionof his spiritual condition. What we

see in our environment is a picture ofourselves. Therefore, if I do not likeany particular condition or circum-stance, let me look within and learnthe lesson it is meant to teach. Thusdo I make use of and overcome thatcondition. To refuse to be enslavedby any outward thing or happening, regarding all such things and happen-ings, as for your use, for your educa-tion, this is Wisdom. To be patientunder all circumstances, and toaccept all circumstances as necessaryfactors in your training, is to risesuperior to all painful conditions, andto overcome them with an overcom-ing which is sure, for by the power ofobedience to law they are utterlyslain.

The great majority are yet in thekindergarten class, learning the sim-ple, fundamental lessons of life, pro-gressing slowly along the evolution-ary path. But for those, who, know-

ing what they seek, are striving toreach the Heavenly state, every daybrings opportunities to sacrifice self-

ishness, to serve and love their fel-lows. Every mistake they make, every fall they have, contains lessonsfor them lessons in humility, patience, courage. Behold, all thingsare good. All things work togetherfor good to them that love the Lord,to them who are called according toHis purpose. Yea, and all things

work together for good to them thatGod lovescan He ever give any-thing but good, and dare we excludeany?

Does not this understanding give areasonable basis for faith or trust inthe Heavenly Father? Can we not seethat real wisdom consists in givingone day at a time, leaving the order-ing of all our lives to Him who everseeks our perfection and happiness? Our perfection is accomplished notso much by what we do as by allow-ing the Divine Will to act through us.It is more by yielding our will in obe-dience, willing to do His will, thanby our own efforts toward our per-fection. The universal laws are per-fect in their operation, and when

unhindered by our imperfect under-standing, bring us by the shortest andeasiest road to that rounded perfec-tion of mind and heart which is theHeavenly Fathers will for each of

his particular sphere of vision, or hemay have accidentally mislaid hisglasses. But, in either case, if he

stumbles upon the naked truth inGods word he becomes unhappy. The writer has spoken to a number ofministers who have confessed thatthey had become aware of certaintruths but dared not preach thembecause to do so would call down thewrath of their congregation uponthem by disturbing established con-

ditions. And this is not to be won-dered at, even King James, who wasa monarch and an autocrat, cautionedthe translators of the Bible not totranslate in such a manner that thenew version would disturb estab-lished ideas; because he knew thatthe moment new points were intro-duced there would be a controversybetween the defenders of the old andthe new religious views, whichwould probably result in civil war.The great majority are always readyto sacrifice truth for the sake ofpeace; therefore we are bound todaydespite our boasted freedom, and nomatter how keen may be our physicaleyesight, vast numbers among us areblinded by a scale so opaque that it

almost entirely obscures their spiritu-al vision.

But in spite of everything, the truthcrops out, sometimes in the mostunexpected places, as the following

clipping will show. This sounds morelike the musings of a Mystic than thewritings of a Presbyterian minister,

bound to the dreadful doctrine of pre-destination and commitment of soulsto everlasting hell-fire, where dread-ful tortures are endured for eternity, even by babes a span long, whichhave been thus foreordained to sufferfor eternity by their creator. It waswritten by J. R. Miller, a well knownPhiladelphia Divine, and is only

another indication of the fact that asixth sense is slowly developing, often, as said, in the most unexpectedplaces, crushing creed with mysticfacts and knowledge. The Rev. Millersays:

Every one of us casts a shadow. There hangs about us a sort ofpenumbraa strange, indefinablesomethingwhich we call personalinfluence, which has its effect onevery other life on which it falls. Itgoes with us wherever we go. It isnot something we can have when wewill as we lay aside a garment. It issomething that always pours outfrom our life, like light from a lamp, like heat from a flame, like perfumefrom a flower.

Once, when the Christ was alonewith his disciples, he asked them:Whom do men say that I, the Son ofMan, am? And they answered andsaid, Some say Thou art Elijah, oth-

a very few years; some even find anew environment after a few monthsand are born within a year. During

this time the new initiate also hasopportunities to study the life andactions of those who are in purgatoryand the first Heaven, which are theheaven and hell referred to in theBible. This was what Christ helpedhis disciples to do: to see and toknow. Upon the rock of this truth theChurch is founded, for if there were

no rebirth, there could be no evolu-tionary progress and consequentlyall advancement would be an impos-sibility.

But what then is the way to realiza-tion? is the great great question andto this there is and can be only oneanswerthe unfoldment of the sixthsense, by means of which the Mysticdiscovers this immortal shadow thatthe Rev. Miller speaks about. Heavenand Hell are all about us, our ownpast lives and the lives of our con-temporaries have been thrown uponthe screen of time and are there readyto be read at any time when we shallbuild our senses so that we may readthem.

    The electric light, focused through

a stereopticon lens, projects a bril-liant image of a suitable slide whenthere is darkness, but leaves no visi-ble imprint whatever when the Sunsrays strike the screen. We also, if we

would read the Mystic scroll of ourpast, must learn to still our senses sothat the world without disappears in

darkness. Then, by the light of thespirit, we shall see the pictures of thepast take the place of the present.

This shadow, seen by Pastor Milleraround the body, is analogous to thephotosphere, or Aura of the Sun andthe planets. Each of those great bod-ies has such an invisible shadow, thatis to say, invisible under ordinary

conditions. We see the photosphereof the Sun when the physical orb isobscured during an eclipse, but at noother time. So also with this shadowor photosphere of man; when welearn to control our sense of sight sothat we may look at a man withoutseeing his physical form, then thisphotosphere or aura may be seen inall its splendor, for the colors of earthare dull in comparison with thosespiritual living fires which surroundand emanate from each human being.

The fantastic coruscating play ofthe aurora borealis gives us an idea ofhow this photosphere or shadow acts.It is in incessant motion, darts offorce and flame are constantly shoot-ing out from every part thereof, but

particularly active around the head;and the colors and hues of this auricatmosphere change with everythought or move. This shadow isonly observable to those who close

trate the opacity of the body reveal-ing thereby the soul, for from thence-forth we are bound to bear our broth-

ers burdens in addition to our own.But who so becomes a Servant haswith all the sorrow, also a joy and apeace that passeth all understanding.

When we have had our spiritualeyes opened, and have learned to seethis heavenly vision, the Christwithin the hearts of men, there areother steps that take us further along

the path. When we learn to close ourears to the clashing and clamoringthrong, to the quarrels of men overthis, that, and the other unessentialthing, when we have learned that thecreeds, dogmas and all earthly opin-ions are of no value, that there is onlyone voice in the universe worth lis-tening to, the voice of our Father thatspeaketh ever to them that seek Hisface, then we shall be able to hear theSong of the Spheres, spoken of in theimmortal Faust in the inspiredwords:

The Sun intones His ancient song,

Mid rival chant of Brother spheres,

    His predestined course He speeds

    along,

    In thunderous path throughout the

years. As in the case of the photosphere of

the Sun that is seen only during aneclipse, when the physical orb hasbeen obscured, so it is also with the

Song of the Spheres; it is not heardtill all other sounds have beensilenced, for it is the Fathers voice.

And in this sublime harmony of thespheres the keynote of Wisdom,Strength, and Beauty reverberatesthrough the whole Universe, and inthese vibrations we live, move andhave our being. Love divine poursout upon us in unstinted measurethrough each cosmic chord to cheerthe despondent and urge the laggard.

Are not two sparrows sold for a far-thing, yet not one falleth to theground without your father knoweth;ye are more than many sparrows.Come unto me ye that are weak andheavy laden, rest upon the great cos-mic heart of the Father. His voiceshall comfort and strengthen the soul.

Each year and age this greatCosmic Chant changes, each life welearn to sing a new song. God in alland through all works His miracles innature and in man. We are usuallydeaf to the magic wrought by thesilent sound of the divine word, but ifwe can learn to hear, we shall sensethe true nearness of Our Father, clos-er than hands and feet, we shall knowthat we are never alone, never out of

His loving care.As the Sun and planets give both

light and sound, so man also has hiskeynote of light and sound. In theMedulla burns a light like the flame

RAYS FROM THE ROSE CROSS 11

    10/42

of a candle, but it does not burnsteadily, quietly and silently. It pul-sates and at the same time it emits a

sound which varies from birth todeath and may be said never to be thesame. As it changes, so do wechange, for this sound is the keynoteof the human being. In it is expressedhis hopes and his fears, his sorrowsand his joys as they have beenworked out in the physical world, forthis fire is kindled by the archetype

of the physical body. The archetypeis a vacuous sphere, but by soundinga certain note it draws to itself all thephysical concretions which we seehere as its manifestationthe bodywhich we call the man. In this sound-ing flame the greatest number ofnerves in the human body have theirroot and origin. This place is the vitalspot in man, the seat of life, the ker-nel of the shadow which PastorMiller spoke about. When we findthat point, we have almost reachedthe heart of the man.

To reach that supreme point, othersteps are necessary; however, we areusually so wrapped up in our owninterests, regardless of the interestsand cares of other people, that we are

self-centered. This must be over-come; we must learn to bury our ownsorrows and joys, to stifle our ownfeelings, for just as the light of theSun hides the photosphere, and the

opaque physical body of man veilsthe beautiful auric atmosphere, soalso our personal feelings and emo-

tions and interests make us insensibleto fellow feelings. When we havelearned to still the feeling of our ownhearts, to think little of our own sor-rows and joys, we begin to sense thebeating of the great Cosmic heart, which is now in travail to bring manysons to glory.

The birth pangs of our Father-

Mother in Heaven are sensed only bythe Mystic in his highest and mostsublime moments, when he hasentirely stifled the selfish wailings ofhis own heart, for that is the strongestand most difficult enemy to over-come. But when that has beenachieved, he senses, as said, theGreat Heart of our Father in Heaven.

Thus, step by step, we approach theLight, even the Father of Lights inWhom there is no shadow, and letus make this very clear, that:

It may be a mark of some achieve-ment to be able to see the shadow.

It may mark a higher step in attain-ment to be able to hear the voice inthe silence.

But above everything, let us strive

to feel the heart-beats of our fellows,to make their sorrows our own, torejoice in their attainments and toguide them to our Fathers bosom forpeace and comfort.

    OVERCOME EVIL

    WITH GOOD

Chas. A. PeckhamWhen, at the beginning of our

efforts to live the higher life, weexamine and judge ourselves eachnight, as provided for in the eveningexercise used in the RosicrucianFellowship, we very naturally findwithin ourselves many habits andtraits of character which we consider

as undesirable, and which hinder ouradvancement, and these we, forth-with, attempt to eradicate.

Then begins a struggle with thelower nature that often taxes ourstrength to the utmost, for we findthat as we oppose these tendencies, they seem to grow stronger and toresist us with an ever-increasingforce. This is because these tenden-cies are deeply rooted in our naturesand are consequently difficult to dis-lodge. By opposing the evil westrengthen it and cause it to fight backand thus defeat our aim.

There is a method, however, bywhich we may attain our object withmuch less expenditure of energy, andto this Paul gives us the key when he

tells us to Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. In thisstatement he enunciates a well-estab-lished principle of occult training, which is to overcome all the evil in

our natures by transmuting it to good.It is readily apparent to anyone that

we cannot be possessed of qualities

that are exactly opposite in nature. We cannot be both saint and sinner;both wise and ignorant; both patientand impatient. Therefore, as we culti-vate the one, the other must of neces-sity be eradicated. Thus by living alife of devotion to high ideals and cul-tivating the good and true within our-selves, we overcome and crowd out

our evil tendencies as easily and sure-ly as heat overcomes cold or light dis-pels darkness. It is much easier toovercome a fault by cultivating agood habit to take its place than it isto tear it out by the roots, and thisseems to be natures way.

Then, too, it is undesirable to kill outanything that we find in our natures.

All our faculties are given us for use.It is by means of them that we gain

experience. That they appear evil issimply because we use our energy inthe wrong direction. Therefore, if wekill them out, we deprive ourselves ofsomething which may be of benefit;whereas, if we transmute and use thisenergy for good, we not only eradi-cate the evil, but also acquire new

faculties of value in our soul-growth.Remember, that it is our task to

purify and refine our natures and soprepare ourselves for work in thehigher worlds.

RAYS FROM THE ROSE CROSS 13

  • 8/14/2019 1915_10_Oct Rays from the Rose Cross.pdf

    12/42

Therefore, let us spend no time inresisting or denying evil, but rather letus strive to cultivate to the utmost our

higher natures and to live lives ofsuch purity, that not only in deed butalso in word, thought, and feeling weexpress only that which is good andbeautiful and so by spiritual alchemytransform our lower natures, transmut-ing the base metal to most pure gold.

Our goal is to become self-con-scious creators and the first step nec-

essary to that attainment is to let loverule supreme in our hearts, so that weno longer seek to destroy, but only touplift and preserve. Christ said,Love your enemies, and we canreadily see that our worst enemies areour own carnal passions and desires, for these hinder our advancement infar greater measure than any outsideforce can do.

Yet these passions have been themeans of our advancement, for throughthem we have gained the experiencesnecessary for our growth, and we oughtto love them accordingly.

But now, having learned the lesson, having assimilated all that they canteach, it is necessary, in order toadvance further, that every faculty

should be uplifted and trained to serveus on higher levels.

The opposite pole of every vice is avirtue into which that vice may betransmuted, and when so purified it

becomes a valuable servant.Let us, therefore, strive to transmute

    all that is evil in our natures to good;

all that is good to still greater goodand so prepare ourselves to becomecoworkers with those who are labor-ing to hasten the great day of theLord.

    THE CHEERFUL BLACKGUARD

Here is a brief extract from that sin-

gular story, The Cheerful Blackguard, byRoger Pocock. It gives an impressionof the endless fund of philosophy thatthe Spanish-Irish hero possesses. Atthe time he utters the speech, heexpects to be condemned to death.

See, he says, the rain hasstopped, the shadow of the rain haspassed, the sun god lights the rain-drops, even the dirty little raindropsalong the window frame. Dirty theyare, and yet they shine like stars;small they are, yet big enough toreflect the figures and glory of theirGod, who made them in his image. The sun heat will dry them up, so thattheir bodies die, and yet their spiritsrise into the heavens.

I am no more than that. I am no

lessa thing from heaven, stainedand shamed with dirt in this world, and yet reflecting God, who burnsmy body to call my spirit up,cleansed, freed, eternal.

    THE GOVERNING RAY?

Question: In the Cosmo it is stated that allOccult Schools belong to one of the sevenplanetary rays and one can only join theschool of the ray to which he belongs. Towhat ray does the Rosicrucian Fellowshipbelong? And does this mean that anyoneapplying for admission thereto, if not of thesame ray, could be rejected? Understandingof this point is rendered still more difficultbecause of the statement in, I think, theAstrology books, that our Father Star is notknown until the last initiation.

Answer: There are two sets of people inthe world, spoken of in the Masonic Legend

as the Sons of Seth and the Sons of Cain, and represented in our modern times byFreemasonry and Catholicism, statecraftand priestcraft: those who listen to the voiceof intellect and follow the head, and thosewho obey the voice of the heart and followtheir emotions and feelings. The Sons ofSeth are people who go along the devotion-al path and follow their religion in whatevercountry they may be; they do not come in

touch with any Mystery School at any timeof their existence. They have followed theirspiritual teachers, docile as lambs, as waterflows gently in an artificial canal, andamong their leaders, from the time of Abel,

the shepherd, we find great lights likeSolomon, who was later reborn as Jesus, and is now the invisible spiritual pillar ofthe Church, which he will eventually guideinto the haven of the Kingdom of Christ. These people are the Divine prototypes,Adam and Eve, created by Jehovah, theregent of Luna, the Queen of the waters ofthe world and the emotions of men. Ouremotions are unstable as water, which isgoverned in its periodical ebb and flow bythe Moon.

The other stream of humanity, called theSons of Cain, is that class in whom theDivine essence, the Ego, makes itself felt as

a burning fire. The original creative instinctis keen within them, for when humanity was

in its cradle, they listened to the voice of theLucifer Spirits and ate of the Tree ofKnowledge; hence they became enlight-ened. The mind prospered at the expense ofthe heart; and from Cain, Tubal-Cain,Methuselah, have come all the craftsmen,of the world. They were the ones who builtSolomons Temple, under the leadership ofHiram Abiff, the Master Mason, who waslater reborn as the Widows Son of Naim,

raised by the strong grip of the Lion ofJudah and is now working through Industryand Statecraft under the name of ChristianRosenkreuz to bring his kindred into theKingdom of Christ, where the two streams

will unite, where there will be neitherpriests nor kings, but one, even Christ, willfill the dual office of King and Priest.

In every vast company of men there arealways some behind and some in advance;and we may find individuals belonging toeach of these two streams of humanityamong the lowest types, as well as amongthe most highly civilized people on earth. But all along the path of evolution, thereare, as we might say, gates which lead to thepath of initiation and which may beunlocked by anyone who has the proper key.But the locks are different at different pointson the path of evolution, and they arebecoming more complicated, for we are alllearning lessons now by evolution whichwere in bygone ages taught in the process ofinitiation in the Mystery Schools.

In each life we are born with a new horo-scope. Our Ascendant and planets will bevery different in each life, according to the

lessons we have to learn and the liabilitieswe are to liquidate from the past. In one lifewe may have Mars as a ruler, another lifemay be ruled by Venus, or any of the otherplanets. For it is designed that the spiritshould learn all things in order to becomeperfect and it must therefore evolve underthe influence of all the planets in order thateverything in its nature may be evenly bal-anced. Nevertheless, the stamp of our Father

Star or Father Fire is always there, and thismakes one who is inherently Martial spiritdifferent from one who comes from theJupiter Rays, though their horoscopes may bequite similar, perhaps, as in the case of twins.

Children born with the same Gr. Meantime in Madrid, New York, and Honoluluwould be of widely different types, stamped

by their national and racial peculiarities, andyet their horoscopes would be much alike. This illustrates that it is not the horoscopeitself that counts, but the invisible influencethat is due to the identity of the Father Fireor Father Star; and when a man or woman isready to enter the gate or path which leadsup to the Mystery School, he or she will feelthe right spiritual attraction through thebasic color vibration of their aura, and if thisattraction is followed, it is sure to guide himto the right place, where he will not be refused.

Generally speaking it may be said that allof the people of the Western world belong tothe Western Wisdom School of theRosicrucians, and that they make a mistakewhen they endeavor to enter a schoolbelonging to or teaching the EasternPhilosophy. When Moses led the Israelites

out of Egypt, the land of the Bull, where thatanimal was worshiped when the Sun, byprecession, was in the sign Taurus, he gavethe people under his guidance a new sym-bol, the Lamb. And from the time when theSun by precession went through the signAries, the Lamb, it has been and is idolatryto worship the golden Calf (Taurus), or bowdown before the serpents and scorpions, which were the priests of that dispensation,

because Scorpio is the opposite sign fromTaurus. Then came Christ, the Lamb of God,so called, to inaugurate a new religion; andwe hear of a judgment when He shall comeagain under the sign Libra, the scales, which

16 RAYS FROM THE ROSE CROSS

  • 8/14/2019 1915_10_Oct Rays from the Rose Cross.pdf

    15/42

is opposite Aries, to judge all of the world.Later, by precession, the Sun passed

through the sign Pisces, the fishes, and for

two thousand years we have been abstainingfrom meat on certain days and eating fish, while we worshiped the opposite sign,Virgo, the immaculate Virgin. Now the sunis entering, by precession, within orb of thecelestial sign Aquarius, the Son of Man, andin the coming Aquarian age we shall havean entirely different standard from what wehave had before. As a matter of fact, wemust learn to worshipthe Christ within, andthis Christ is not the same for each one ofus. This is the Savior that is to lead us out ofour present condition. And the difference isin the basic planetary ray that is in each andevery one of us. So there is the horoscopicray, governed by the planet which is ruler ofour horoscope in each life; there is the indi-vidual ray, which is governed by the sub-rayof our Father Fire or Father Star, under

which we originated; and, finally, there isthe Father Fire or Ray itself. It is this latter thatis not revealed until the last initiation. Ourindividual ray is discovered unto us at thetime we receive the discipleship instruction, and the horoscopic ray is evident as soon aswe cast the figure and know how to read it.

To clear up this point from another angle, let us illustrate by colors. There are sevencolors in the spectrum: red, orange, yellow,

etc. But within the red we shall also findseven sub-rays which are: red-red, red-orange, red-yellow, etc. The same with theyellow ray, we shall find the yellow-red,yellow-yellow, etc. Similarly under the ray

of Mars there are some who are Mars-Saturn, others who are Mars-Sun, othersagain who are Mars-Venus, and so on. Mars

is then the Father Star, while the name of theother planet designates the individual ray. Therefore we find in the Mystery Schools, all over the world, people who are born withany one of the twelve signs rising and anyone of the planets ruling. Also people withindividual rays of the Sun, Venus, Mars,Mercury, etc., are found both in the Easternand Western Mystery Schools. But theMystery School itself is colored by thedeep, overpowering planetary influence ofthe Father Fire, the Father Star, under whichit originated.

You will understand that as the Father Fireis not revealed until the last initiation, thisbasic nature of any Mystery School cannotbe told openly in public. But you must dif-ferentiate between the Mystery School andsuch an association as the Rosicrucian

Fellowship and other kindred societies, which are only preparatory schools for theirrespective Occult Orders. Such schools asthe Rosicrucian Fellowship and kindredorganizations would naturally be dominatedby the planetary influence from the foun-tain-head; this cannot therefore be given.

There are plenty of people who claim thatthey know all and who will smile mysteri-ously, or give out misinformation which can

not be controverted and proven false, because it concerns the secrets of initiation. The writer has always made it a role to sayhonestly and without hesitation, whenever aquestion was asked to which he could not

give an answer: I do not know. To professomniscience is equivalent to a profession ofDivinity; but though the writer has met quite

a number of professors, he has met veryfew, if any, possessors, and you will haveto wait for the answer to that question untilyou come to the proper point in initiation.

Even in the case of the Individual ray, which is given to the Disciples at the timethey enter the path of discipleship, it hasbeen found that people under the signGemini, for instance, which would be sup-posed to be ruled by Mercury, had in their

individual ray all the different other planets;and the same with every one of the othersigns. The writer has given considerable

time and study, endeavoring to find a rule, but it has proven absolutely futile, and thereis only the one explanation, given by theElder Brothersthat the Individual Ray isretained by the spirit throughout its wholeseries of lives, and perfectly independent ofthe Horoscopal rays, which change accord-ing to its birth, environment, and the lessonsto be learned in each life.

with Sun, Mercury, Venus, and the DragonsTail.

Jupiter, the ruling planet, is sextile toMercury and the Sun, and Mars is sextile toVenus. Thus we see that this is a very gen-tle, idealistic, and lovable character, butVenus is in conjunction with the DragonsTail which has a Saturnine influence, andboth Mercury and Venus are square toSaturn; hence it is inevitable that much sor-row and suffering will come in to this lifeand cloud it with gloom. Wherever Mercury,

the significator of the mind, is afflicted bySaturn, the planet of Obstruction, there isnaturally a gloomy condition and a tenden-cy to look upon the dark side of life. But wecan never judge anything in a horoscope

think it may interest our readers to knowwhat the stars have to say.

from one configuration; all aspects must beconsidered in their bearing upon any subject, and thus a synthesis, or balance, of influ-

ence will be obtained. The sextile of Mars toVenus and Mercury gives fortitude to themind, thus helping to offset the sinisterinfluence of Saturn. The Moon, which is theother significator of mind, is in the Mercurialsign Gemini, trine to Uranus. This accounts

for the evolution of the supernormal facul-ties of which we hear in the history of thiscase, and the conversion of these latent fac-ulties to dynamic powers are also presagedby the trine of Jupiter, the planet ofBenevolence and Idealism, to Neptune theplanet of Spirituality; and by balancingthese testimonies, we see in this youngwoman a soul of a gentle, kindly, and ideal-

istic nature whose latent spiritual facultiesare nearly ripe, and almost ready to be con-verted into usable powers under the properstellar impact.

With respect to the Health, it is recorded

that she became afflicted with tuberculosis, also that she lost her sight, hearing, andspeech. The Sun and Mercury are in the sign

Sagittarius close to the nebular spot calledAntares, and the Sun is in opposition toNeptune. This is the cause of the weak sight. The twelfth house indicates the restrictiveinfluences in life, and when Mercury, thesignificator of sense, is there in conjunctionwith the Sun, as is the case in the presenthoroscope, we have a limiting influencewhich affects the hearing. It is curious tonote that Neptune, the octave of Mercury, isin the Sign Gemini, ruled by Mercury and inopposition to the Sun and therefore it helpsto awaken the spiritual hearing which is alsorecorded in connection with this case. Thisconfiguration would not have been able todo this alone, and the hearing obtainedwould have been of an undesirable nature, but it helps the configuration of the Moontrine to Uranus, which opens up the super-

normal faculties, as already stated.Taurus rules the throat and larynx, but

Mercury governs the air which stirs thevocal chords. Here we find that Taurus is onthe cusp of the Sixth house, denoting sick-ness, and Venus, the ruler, is on theAscendant in conjunction with theSaturnine influence of the Dragons Tail, which also afflicts Mercury by its conjunc-tion; hence the weakness of the vocal

organs, and the consequent loss of speech isindicated by their square to Saturn. Neptunein the sign Gemini, which governs thelungs, in opposition to the Sun, is responsi-ble for the affliction of Tuberculosis.

It would seem almost impossible that oneso sorely afflicted could ever be healed, buton Sunday, February 18th, 1912, the clock

of Destiny struck the hour of her relief. Atthat time the progressed Sun was 28 degreesof Sagittarius; it had therefore passed theopposition to the radical Moon and was sex-tile to Uranus at birth. This is an influenceunder which a sudden turn of a beneficialnature might be expected, but the planetsalone cannot bring this about. The Moon, orLunation, is the minute hand on the clock ofDestiny and on that very day the New Moonoccurred in 28 degrees of Aquarius, trine tothe Moon and Uranus at birth, and sextile tothe progressed Sun; this was a very power-ful occult influence and on that very dayJupiter, the ruler of the figure also transitedthe Ascendant; thus there were a number ofmost extraordinary influences to account forthe miracle which then took place in herrecovery.

Following is the history of the case, asgiven by our friend in England.

Many there are who refuse to believethere is any such thing as a miracle. Theyare probably right, a miracle is not super-natural it is merely, usually, an activity ofsuper-physical forces which are not yetunderstood by the world in general. Suchmiracles occur constantly in connectionwith the patients of the R F., probably every

day, if the truth were known. But of themany extraordinary happenings which havethrust themselves upon a skeptical world oflate years, probably none is so well authen-ticated or has received so much of the atten-

tion of scientific men as that known on thisside of the herring pond as the Kerinmiracle case. On Sunday 18th, February,

1912, Miss Dorothy Kerin who had lain forsome years bed-ridden, suffering fromadvanced tuberculosis, kidney disease, and, latterly, from blindness and loss of speech, with a temperature sometimes rising to 105,was suddenly and completely cured by anangelic visitation.

The following particulars were suppliedby her mother: A strange fact in the recov-ery is that for a few days immediatelybefore it, Miss Kerin appeared to becomerapidly worse than ever she had been in thepreceding five years of her illness. A fewdays before, she had lost both hearing andsight. We did not think she could livethrough the day. My husband and I, withsome other friends and relations, were gath-ered round her bed about 8 p.m. on Sunday, expecting it to be her deathbed. She sudden-

ly gave a great sigh, and we thought she wasgone. But with a wonderful smile whichnone of us can ever forget, she stretched outher arms and held them out for a fewmoments. Then she lay still for awhile.Presently her lips moved, she stretched outher arms again, and then drew her handsover her eyes, always smiling in that won-derful, unearthly way. Her terrible weak-ness, due to tuberculosis and diabetes, had

made her almost a skeleton. And then wesaw a miracle before our eyes. She looked atus, her eyes at first squinting and thenbecoming quite natural in expression. Iasked her: Dolly do you know me? Of

course I do mummy. We were all amazed. She then sat up and cried, I am to get up.She seemed to be under some mysterious

influence. You cant get up my darling, said I, you are too weak. But when webrought a wrapper, she swung her legs fromthe bed and walked about. She was muchcalmer than we were. One man present wasa professed atheist. He fell on his knees andsobbed aloud.

Miss Dorothy Kerin, interviewed in hermothers presence, said concerning thehealing Vision: It seemed like a greatgolden flame above me, with two handsstretched out, warm hands, and a voicespoke, saying: Dorothy your sufferings areover; get up, you can walk. And then Icould see and walk and am well. I am sureit is a miracle. Her doctor would notbelieve it when he was informed, but had toadmit on examining her next day that shewas entirely free from organic disease!

The case is so thoroughly well authenti-cated as to be absolutely indisputable. MissKerins pathological condition was vouchedfor not only by her regular medical atten-dant, Dr. Norman, but also by the St.Bartholomews Hospital, St. Peters Homefor Incurables at Kilburn, and other institu-tions, she having been sent home two yearsago as a hopeless case. Scores of doctorshave since seen her, and her case is well

known in the profession. Her brother saidthat during the later stages of her illness, when her normal faculties declined,Dorothy developed super-normal facultiesand could, for instance, give an account of

what was happening to her brother at a dis-tance from home. Care had to be exercisedin speaking of her in other rooms as she

could then hear, although deaf to those whospoke to her at the bed-side.

An independent statement of the case, forthose who are further interested, may befound in Dr. E. L. Ashs Faith and Suggestion.Miss Kerin, to the writers knowledge, isapparently quite well and strong today. Shespoke at a great religious conference in theNorth of England recently and last monthdelivered a lecture before a London OccultSociety, What I know of the effect ofprayer as a healing factor. How I wascured. It need scarcely be added that MissKerin is of a very religious disposition, andeven during her illness she was so patientand gentle, and suffered all things gladly asto quickly endear her to all with whom shecame in contact. Miss Kerin was offeredquite large sums to appear on the music-hall

stage, but regarding this as a prostitution ofthe evidence of divine grace, it was refused.

    YOUR CHILDS HOROSCOPE

Little Miss Fh. Born April 3, 1915

This is rather a difficult horoscope of astrange child. You remember how Faust says:

There is just such a markedly dual naturein this horoscope, almost amounting to twodistinct and separate personalities. We find

one shown by the planets in Pisces: Venus,Jupiter, Mars and Mercury. This representsthe lower and more pleasure loving nature. The other, higher self is represented by theMoon sextile to Uranus and trine to the Sunwhich is also sextile to Uranus. These twonatures are so different from each other, soantagonistic that there is going to be a life of

struggle in which now one, now the otherwill gain the ascendency.

Besides these aspects, note that the signCapricorn is rising, with the ruler, Saturn inthe sixth house and square to Mars. Thiswill make her discontented; she will neverknow just to which side to lean, and she will

rebel against the restraint which is due topresent social conditions of the world.

The Moon in the sign Sagittarius makespeople very restless and causes them to trav-el from one place to another; far fields

always look green to them, and this restless-ness permeates the whole nature. There is,on account of the position of Venus, Jupiter,

and Mercury in Pisces, a strong tendencytoward musical expression, but whether thiswill be brought out or not depends uponwhether she can be made to settle down toactual study; for the Moon in Sagittarius, squaring Venus and also Jupiter, the ruler ofSagittarius, will make this exceedinglydoubtful.

There is no doubt that she is an advancedsoul, but on that account she also affords avery difficult problem to handle, and themain care of the parents should be directedto settling her down to one course or anoth-er. Naturally, the pleasure loving side of hercharacter, the fondness of good clothes, given by the Moon square Venus, the love ofgood things to eat and drink, shown byMars, Jupiter, and Venus in Pisces, are themain things which the parents will have to

combat during the earlier years. When theage of puberty has brought the soul somerealization of its destiny, the fight withinherself will begin, and the Sun, sextileUranus and trine Moon, will then com-mence to exert an influence for good. Therealso is considerable help from Capricorn onthe Ascendant, to overcome the Sagittariustendency of restlessness. If the parents workupon her in the early years and get her to

settle down to certain, definite lines of con-duct and study, this influence will bemarked in the later years and give her greataid in overcoming the Pisces side of her per-sonality.

With regard to health, we note that Saturnis in the sign Gemini, which rules the lungs. We see also that he is square to Mars from

the watery sign Pisces. This will give a ten-dency to coughs and colds and if these areneglected the lungs may become affected. There is, however, no cause for apprehen-sion, because the Sun and Mars are in paral-lel and this will give her such wonderfulrecuperative powers that, although she maybe down to the verge of death, she will pickup just as quickly.

But Astrology does not only tell us thatshe will be subject to coughs and colds, butit gives the causes of the trouble. We findhere that the Moon is square to Venus andthat Jupiter is conjunction to Mars, VenusMars and Jupiter being in the watery signPisces. This gives a marked tendencytoward indulgence of the appetites, and it isa well known fact that coughs and colds aremostly due to overeating. She must, there-

fore, be taught from the very earliest child-hood not to gratify this appetite, because thesystem cannot throw off an excess of nutri-mentno matter how much she may plead, and she will be an adept at that; because ofthe conjunction of Mercury and Jupiter, theparents must let reason rule. In later yearsthe side of her nature expressed by Marsconjunction Mercury will come out and sharp-en the tongue, but there also they must stand

firm, so that neither on account of pleadingnor of scolding should they give in to thisdesire for an excess of food, for that willcause most of her physical troubles. The fore-going is aggravated by Neptune in Cancer.

Don By Born April 12, 1906

Here we have a little fellow who was born

just about the time of the San Franciscoearthquake. The planets were then in a veryafflicted condition; but fortunately he hadLeo rising and all the planets, with theexception of two, above the earth. The Sunis exalted in Aries, and Mars is close to theM. C. This will give him strength so that, although there are many afflictions, he willbe able to survive them all and hold his own.

Besides, when we speak of an afflictedhoroscope, it is really something over whichwe should rejoice, from the souls standpoint. For squares bring soul growth and a childwith a horoscope like this is bound to rise inthe world and make his mark in spite of the

drawbacks. He is far better off than a childwith a wishy-washy horoscope that has noafflictions which, by being overcome, willgenerate the spiritual muscle, as physicalexercise generates bodily strength and vigor.

Mercury, the significator of mind, issquare to Uranus and Neptune. This willmake him slow to grasp things intellectual-

ly; but Mercury sextile Jupiter trine Moonwill more than offset that. There is alsoSaturn trine Neptune sextile Uranus.Neptune is the octave of Mercury and gov-erns the logical understanding of spiritualproblems, while Uranus is the octave ofVenus and governs the intuition. This willraise his understanding of things to a planewhich is above the intellectual, yet not alto-gether dependent on intuition. He will knowthings without having a reason, but he willalso know the reason for his conclusions. The Sun is exalted in Aries, and Venus isessentially dignified in Taurus; both are inthe ninth house and thus they serve toenlighten the mind and give it kindliness. This will also give him very high ideals andmake him very sympathetic.

The presence of Mars in Taurus, which gov-

erns the larynx, has a tendency to make peo-ple cruel in speech, but as Mars is not aspect-ed at all, this tendency probably will not cometo the front. If it does it will only be on rareoccasions, for Venus is also in that sign.

The trine of Mercury to the Moon impartsa sort of a dreamy nature to the mentalityand the presence of the Sun and Venus in theninth house also gives something of thatsame nature. Taken together, they indicate

that Don will be able to express himself mostbeautifully in poetry. There is great probabil-ity that he will take up literature for a voca-tion and his writings will be of a strangenature, on account of this unusual mentality.

Venus being in Taurus, the sign of voice, andso close to the M. C., aspected by Neptuneand Uranus, makes it very probable that he

will also express himself orally, on the lec-ture platform, and the aspect to Neptune andUranus makes it appear likely that his lec-tures will have to do with occult subjects.

This child has brought such noble idealsand characteristics with him from the pastthat it is really unnecessary to warn the par-ents to look after him in any respect. He willfind himself unaided, and he will never go farwrong as far as the moral and the mental lifeis concerned; but with respect to the physical, there is considerable to be guarded against inorder to make life as pleasant as possible forhim, for there are a number of afflictions.

Jupiter governs the arterial circulation andit is in Gemini, the sign of the lungs. It issquare the planet Saturn, which is theobstructor in life; and in a very weak oppo-sition to the Moon, which from that place

governs the tidal flow of the air in the lungs. Thus it is seen that Don should be taught tobreathe well and deeply, because otherwisethere may be obstruction in the lungs andthe blood will not be well oxygenated. Thiswould, naturally, impair the system.Neptune and Uranus are in opposition fromthe signs Cancer and Capricorn, andsquared by Mercury, which rules the nerves.Cancer is the sign of the stomach, and there-

fore we see that there is a tendency to ner-vous indigestion. From this fact we also rea-son that the impaired digestion gives rise tothe colds and coughs previously mentionedas liable to obstruct the lungs. Don should

be very careful of his food and endeavor tostrengthen his body by breathing exercises. If these exercises are given him from child-

    EVOLUTION AS SHOWN IN THE

    ZODIAC

    (Concluded)

SERPENTS or SCORPIONSJesus taught the multitudes in parables,

but explained the mysteries of the Kingdomto His disciples. Paul gave meat to thestrong, but the milk of doctrine to the multi-tude, for there has always been an exotericand an esoteric side in every religion. If wetake Taurus, the sign of the bull, to symbol-ize the worship of that animal as practicedin Egypt, Persia, and other countries at that

time, then we shall find that the oppositesign, Scorpio, symbolizes the esoteric doc-trine of the priesthood, which were theguardians of these Ancient AtlanteanMysteries.

In this connection we will note first thatthe sign Scorpio is represented in the picto-rial Zodiac by a Scorpion or Serpent, andwe wish to impress particularly on the stu-dents mind that the Scorpion has its sting in

the tail, while the Serpent has the venom inits teeth. This is very significant, as we shallsee presently.

On looking up the word serpent in theBible, we shall find that there are about

seven words that have thus been translated;but one of them, which was borrowed fromEgypt, is Naja. This word is found on the

old tablets in the ancient temples of Egyptwhere Osiris, the Sun God, is hailed whenarising from the primordial deep. He wasthen crowned with glory and has the UraeusNaja, an emblem of cosmic wisdom. TheUraeus was a part of a serpents body, withits head protruding from a point in the fore-head just above the nose, where the humanspirit has its seat; and Christ thereforereferred to the ancient Serpent-Initiates,when he said: Be ye wise as serpents.

In ancient Egypt the King wore a crownadorned by a double serpent, Uraeus or

Naja, which seem to protrude from his fore-head when the crown was placed upon hishead. This was to symbolize the fact that heheld the double office of King and Priest byvirtue of his sublime wisdom. In India, also, the guardians of the Mystery Teachings

were called Nagas or Serpents. In theIcelandic Eddas, the Northern Vedas,Siegfried, the truth seeker, slays the serpent, tastes of its blood and then becomes wise.Nor, to elaborate on the statement madeabove, is it necessary to go outside our ownreligion for proof that the serpent is thesymbol of wisdom, for the Christ Himselfsaid: Be ye wise as serpents. The serpentis certainly not sufficiently sagacious to

warrant a literal meaning of this saying; butwhen we understand that when the creativefire is drawn upwards through the serpen-tine spinal cord it vibrates the pituitarybody, and the pineal gland, connecting the

    24/42

Ego with the invisible worlds by opening upa hidden sense, the allusion is perfectly clear.

There is, however, a lower phase of spiri-

tual development, symbolized in ancienttimes by placing the Uraeus or serpent at thenavel, to show that the mediumistic facul-ties in the solar plexus had been developed.Mediumship is a negative phase of spiritualsight or hearing possessed by a person con-trolled by an outside intelligence who thenprophesies. This undesirable phase of seer-ship was represented in the Zodiac by thesymbol of Scorpion, which has the sting inits tail. In the Serpent Initiate the CreativeCosmic Fire was drawn upward through thehead to serve a spiritual end; in the Mediumthe creative energy is expressed for selfish, sensual ends through the procreative organruled by the Scorpion.

The point between the eyebrows, whencethe serpent of wisdom protrudes, isthe seat

of life, whereas all that opens the womb is

subject to the sting of death, contained inthe Scorpions tail.

If we now turn with this information toour Bible, we shall find that a great manythings, previously obscure, will becomeclear. As said, the Egyptian word for thisUraeus or serpent is Naja and it was bor-rowed by the Israelites who expressed thenegative faculty of mediumship by affixingthe feminine ending oth: Naioth, while

those who are able to function consciouslyin the spiritual worlds were given the posi-tive, male plural ending, im, and werecalledNaim. If we read the nineteenth chap-ter of first Samuel with this understanding,

we shall readily see that the incident therenarrated was of a mediumistic nature. Davidhad become afraid of Saul and he went with

Samuel to Naioth. This is supposed byBible translators to be a place, and maybe avillage was so named. But if that was thecase, it was because the people who lived inthat place were Naioth, or mediums. Theywere called prophets in the chapter beforeus, and it is significant that as soon as any-one came within their camp, he commencedto prophesy or speak under control. EvenSaul, who came there, anxious to get Davidaway that he might slay him, was seized bythe spirits and prophesied, to the amazementof all present.

In the New Testament we are told that theChrist went to the city of Nain and thereraised The Son of a Widow. In the LatinTestament, this city was not called Nain, but

Naim. And it is very significant that allthree, Naim, Naioth and Endor, where the

sorceress that assisted Saul is supposed tohave lived, are in the same locality byMount Tabor.

Every Free Mason knows that the brethrenof that Order are called Sons of theWidow. And it is stated in the Bible thatHiram Abiff, the Master Builder ofSolomons Temple, was the Son of aWidow, a cunning craftsman. We cannot inthe present article repeat the Masonic

Legend which tells the reason why. This wehave given in the books of Freemasonryand Catholicism and also in our book onthe Rosicrucian Philosophy. But suffice it tosay that in the Bible story to which refer-

ence has been made, we have one of theNaim, a Widows Son or initiate of the oldSerpent School, for the priests of Egypt

were phree messen, children of light. Each had within the ancient SerpentWisdom. But a new religion was being inau-gurated, and it was necessary to raise theancient Initiates to the Mysteries of theComing Age. Therefore the Christ, the

Lion of Judah, Lord of the new Kingdom,

went to the Widows Son of Naim andraised him up by the strong grip of theLions paw. And we may here emphasizethat the first Initiate under the new systemwas Hiram Abiff, the highest Initiate of theold system, who, by this new initiationgiven him by the Christ, became a Christian, pledged to bear the Rose and the Cross, which were the symbols of the NewMystery Teachings of the Western Worldand he was then given the symbolical name,Christian Rosenkreuz.

Thus from the time when the Sun entersthe sign Aries by precession, it became acrime for the chosen people to worship thebull exoterically, or to partake of the eso-teric Serpent wisdom. And for a similar rea-son it is Idolatry when people of the Westtake up the Eastern religions, Hinduism,Buddhism, and kindred teachings. For in theAryan Epochs only the Aryan Religions, thereligions of the Lamb, have the proper effect

on the human evolution. All previous sys-tems are detrimental to the Western people;and in time those also who are now in the East, the Orientals, will be forced to embrace thisreligion or be left far behind in evolution.

    THE ARYAN (a) AGE

    Aries-Libra (ag)

The Aryan age may be divided into threeeras, but they are all served by the religionof the Lamb. The first division covers thetime when the Sun, by precession, goesthrough the sign Aries, the Lamb. Jesus wasborn when the Vernal equinox was in aboutseven degrees of Aries; so the twentydegrees which lie on the other side belong tothe Old Testament period, when, as we say,the chosen people were in captivity and lostin the wilderness of the world; the new reli-gion had not then found its place. Then theChrist came and inaugurated this new teach-ing definitely. He came not to destroy theold prophets and the law, but to give ussomething higher when they shall have beenfulfilled. The sign opposite Aries is Libra, the scales or balance of Justice; therefore weare told in the new religion that there will

come a day of judgment (g), when Christshall appear to give to every man accordingto the deeds done in the body.

    Pisces-Virgo ( f)

Christ was the Great Shepherd (a), butHe called His disciples to be fishers ofmen, for the Sun by precession was thenleaving the sign of the Lamb and enteringPisces, the sign of the fishes. Therefore anew phase of the Arian religion was openingup. The Bishops mitre is also in the form ofa fishs head.

The New Testament, therefore, does notmention the Bull or the Lamb, but refer-

ences to the fishes are numerous. We alsofind the celestial virgin (f) prominent andthe wheat ear of Virgo is the Bread of Life,

resultant from the immaculate purity. ThusChrist fed the multitude on fish (Pisces),and loaves (Virgo).

Before the time of Christ, the new religionof the Lamb (Aries), could get no foothold.Moses, the erstwhile leader, could not bringthe chosen people to the promised land. That was reserved for Joshua, the son ofNun. Joshua is the Hebraic for Jesus andthe Hebrew word Nun means fish(Pisces). It was thus foretold that the reli-gion of he Lamb (a) would attain promi-nence during the precessional passage of theSun through the sign Pisces, the fishes.

This prophecy has been fulfilled, for dur-ing the two thousand years which haveelapsed since the birth of Jesus, the Westernreligion has been taught by a celibate priest-hood, worshiping an immaculate virgin,

symbolized by the celestial sign Virgo, which is the opposite of Pisces. This samepriesthood has also enjoined the eating offish and forbidden the use of flesh (ab) oncertain days. When the children of Israel leftthe flesh pots of Egypt, where the Bull (b)was slain, they left it by the blood of theLamb (a). But in the Piscean dispensationno shedding of blood is enjoined and flesheating is condemned as a sin at certain

times, for man is now taught to forsake thelusts of the flesh and also lusting after theflesh.

This ideal was tried under the Aryan dis-pensation, when the chosen people were yet

in the Wilderness, so called, but withoutsuccess; they would not have the heavenlymanna. Now, however, man is being

weaned from the cannibalistic practice, andin the seven hundred years which remainbefore the Aquarian age is definitely ush-ered in, we will, in all probability, havemade great strides, both in overcoming thelust of the flesh and the lust after the flesh. For Virgo, the immaculate celestial virgin, and the ears of wheat contained in the sign, show both of these ideals as profitable tosoul growth at the present time. Jupiter, theplanet of benevolence and philanthropy, which rules Pisces, has been a prominentfactor in promoting altruism during the pasttwo millennia.

AquariusLeo (k )It is often said, and rightly so, that the boy

is the father of the man. And on the sameprinciple we may say that the Son of Man isthe Super-Man; therefore, when the Sun by

precession enters the celestial signAquarius, the water-bearer, we shall have anew phase of the religion of the Lamb, exo-terically; and the ideal to be striven for isshown in the opposite sign, Leo.

The Moon, which is the habitat of theautocratic Race Ruler and Lawgiver,Jehovah, is exalted in Taurus, the sign of theBull, and all Race religions, even theMosaic phase of the Aryan religion of the

Lamb, demanded a sacrificial victim forevery transgression of that law. But the Sunis exalted in Aries, and when the great Sunspirit, Christ, came as High Priest of theAryan religion, He abrogated sacrifice of

others by offering upHimself as a perpetu-al sacrifice for sin.

By looking to the mother ideal of Virgo

during the Piscean age, and following theChrists example of sacrificial service, theimmaculate conception becomes an actualexperience to each of us and Christ, the Sonof Man, Aquarius, is born within us. Thus, gradually, the third phase of the Arian reli-gion will be ushered in and a new ideal willbe found in the Lion of Judah, Leo. Courageof conviction, strength of character, and kin-dred virtues, which make man truly theKing of Creation, worthy of the trust and theconfidence of the lower orders of life as

well as of the love of the Divine Hierarchsabove.

This, the mystic message of Mans evolu-

tion, is marked in flaming characters uponthe field of heaven, where he who runs mayread. And when we study the revealed pur-pose of God, we shall in turn learn to con-form intelligently to that design, therebyhastening the day of emancipation from ourpresent cramped environment to the perfectliberty of free Spirits, risen superior to thelaw of sin and Death, through Christ, theLord of Love and Life.

It is for us to decipher this message, andsolve the Riddle of the Universe.

    THE VITAL BODY

    By Harry Wilson

    (Continued)

Because of the numerous and varied func-tions of the vital body, it was not possible, inthe space allotted to this department, tocover in the former article all its importantfeatures.

It will be recalled by those who read thearticle on the vital body in the Septembernumber, that the closing paragraph had ref-

erence to certain pictures impressed uponthe negative atoms of the vital body, andthat these pictures served as arbiters ofmans destiny in the post-mortem state.Because of the great importance attributedto these pictures, the reader is requested tofollow closely the process by which manetches them into his Desire Body, and at thesame time learn just what should be done by

relatives and friends when the grimreaper, Death, stalks into the household. On page 91 of the Rosicrucian Cosmo

Conception we learn that the memory (orso-called mind), both conscious and sub-

conscious, relates wholly to the experiencesof this life, and that it consists of impres-

sions of events upon the vital body. The memory, or mind, is something

entirely separate and distinct from the phys-ical brain, both the dense and etheric.

We have first memory, that enables us torecall the events in our lives that have madean impression sufficiently strong that aslight effort will bring the picture before us,regardless of the lapse of time. This memo-ry, we are told on page 91, is made up from

imperfect and illusive sense perceptions, and is known as the voluntary or consciousmind.

The involuntary memory, or sub-con-scious mind, is the record of impressionsupon the negative atoms of the vital body, and is not under our control at the presenttime. As stated before in this article, thisrecord is brought about by the ether con-

tained in the air we inspire. This ether notonly carries with it a faithful and accuratepicture of our surroundings, but everythought, feeling, and emotion is alike trans-mitted to the lungs, where it is injected into

the blood. The blood is one of the highestproducts of the vital body and these picturesand conditions are impressed therefrom

upon the negative atoms of the vital body. Itis this that forms the panoramic scroll thatis viewed at the time of passing out, or so-called death.

There is also a super-conscious memory. That is the store-house of all facultiesacquired and knowledge gained in previouslives, though perhaps latent in this life. Thisrecord is indelibly engraven on the LifeSpirit. It manifests ordinarily, though not tothe full extent, as conscience and character, which ensouls all thought-forms; sometimesas counselor, sometimes compelling actionwith resistless force, even contrary to reasonand desire (p. 92).

In many women, in whom the vital bodyis positive, and in advanced people of eithersex, when the vital body has been sensitizedby a pure and holy life, by prayer and con-

centration, this super-conscious memory, inherent in the Life Spirit, is occasionally, tosome extent, above the necessity of clothingitself in mind stuff and desire matter inorder to compel action. It does not alwaysneed to incur the danger of being subject to,and perhaps over-ruled by, a process of rea-soning. Sometimes, in the form of intuitionor teaching from within, it impresses itselfdirectly upon the reflecting ether of the vital

body. The more readily we learn to recog-nize it and follow its dictates, the more oftenit will speak, to our eternal welfare (p. 92).

From the foregoing it is evident that thesub-conscious memory, though independent

and automatic as regards its growth, may toa certain extent be brought under the controlof man, and thus become a valuable instru-

ment in furthering and hastening his devel-opment. This, of course, can be accom-plished only by a proper regulation of ourthoughts, desires, aspirations, ideals, envi-ronment, etc.

We have said that the pictures, abovementioned, in the sub-conscious memory, serve as arbiters of mans destiny in thepost-mortem state. When the man is freed atdeath from the dense body, which was theheaviest clog upon his spiritual power, thispower comes back in some measure, and heis able to read the pictures in the negativepole of the Reflecting Ether of his vitalbody, which is the seat of the sub-consciousmemory (p. 101). The whole of his past lifepasses his sight like a panorama, the eventsbeing presented in reverse order. The inci-dents of the days immediately preceding

death come first, and so on back throughmanhood and womanhood to youth, child-hood, and infancy. Everything is remem-bered. The man stands as a spectator beforethis panorama of his past life. He sees thepictures as they pass, and they impressthemselves upon his higher vehicles.

This panorama lasts from a few hours toseveral days, depending upon the length oftime the man could keep awake if necessary.

Some people can keep awake only twelvehours or less; others can do so upon occa-sion for a number of days; but as long as theman can remain awake this panorama lasts.

This picture or feature of life after death is

RAYS FROM THE ROSE CROSS 31

    30/42

similar to that which takes place when oneis drowning or falling from a height. In suchcases the vital body also leaves the dense

body, and the man sees his life in a flash, because he loses consciousness at once.

It was explained in the last installmenthow the vital body collapses each night, bringing on the condition called sleep; andwe find a similar collapse in the post-mortem state. The unrolling of this scrollof life, or the sub-conscious mind, takesplace in the Etheric Region, which is a partof the physical worldand it is not till thepost-mortem collapse of the vital body thatthe panorama terminates and the man isready to go on to the inner or higher worlds.

Therefore, the time of passing out fromthe dense body, or so-called death, and thetime occupied in reading this panorama oflife, is a most important period. With theaverage, undeveloped individual, it is per-haps the most important in all his journey

from the higher worlds, down into matter, and back again. This journey is made thatwe may gather experience for the purpose oftransmuting our Dense, Vital, and DesireBodies into Soul. If the conditions at thetime of death are favorable, the record con-tained in the vital body will be reviewedwithout interruption, and thus a clear anddistinct etching of this record is made uponthe Desire Body. In this manner our experi-

ences, whether good or evil, are broughtinto the Desire World. This is a post-mortemnecessity, because it is while in our DesireBodies that we go through the experience ofpurging ourselves of all that is undesirable,

and later transmute into Soul Life, Light andPower all that is good.

On page 101 we are told that it can not be

too seriously impressed upon the relativesof a dying person that it is a great crimeagainst the departing soul to give expressionto loud grief and lamentations; for it is justthen engaged in a matter of supreme impor-tance, and a great deal of value of the pastlife depends upon how much attention thesoul can give to this matter. It is also a crimeagainst the dying to administer stimulants, which have the effect of forcing the highervehicles back into the dense body with a

jerk, thus imparting a great shock to theman. It is no torture to pass out, but it is tor-ture to be dragged back to endure furthersuffering. Some who have passed out havetold investigators that they have in that waybeen kept dying for hours, and have prayedthat their relatives would cease their mistak-en kindness and let them die.

And not only should they let them diepeacefully and naturally, but every careshould be taken that the body be undisturbedfor a period of not less than three days there-after. The man is in a measure aware of anydisturbance, and this, of course, interfereswith the panoramic process. Embalming,post-mortem examinations, etc., must not bepermitted during this time.

At the expiration of the panorama, how-

ever, there is a separation, and the body isthen indeed dead (p. 97). The body maythen be disposed of in any manner desiredwithout injury to the soul. The vital body(which is composed of etheric substance

    THE TRUE CAUSE OF CONTAGION

There are many people of a superciliousnature who are always ready to crack a jokeat the expense of Christian Science and kin-dred methods of divine healing which teach-es its followers to cultivate a fearless attitude

of mind under all conditions. But as a matterof actual fact, an enormous percentage ofour sickness is actually due and traceable tofeelings of fear upon the part of the patient.

Travelers who have visited uninhabitedIslands report that birds and beasts foundthere were unafraid of them at first, but theysoon learned the predatory nature of man,and fled before him in fear of their lives.

Thus the ruthless nature of man has in agespast, spread fear all over the earth. We haveconquered, tamed and exploited both birdand beast, and what we could not conquerwe have slain, until every breathing thinghides in fear of us. That is to say, among thelarger animals, none is so large that it doesnot fear and flee from him. But when weturn in the direction of the little things, thenthe case is different, and man who thinks he

reigns supreme on earth because he has putall the larger creation in a state of fear, trem-bles in turn before the minute things in theworld, and the smaller they are, the more hefears them. The microscope has told us that

such a small creature as the house fly carriesabout on the fur of its legs, thousands of par-asites which we fancy are inimical to ourhealth, and therefore fear prompts us tospend millions of dollars on fly paper, flyscreens, fly traps and other devices to ridourselves of this pest, but our efforts are

largely in vain. Though such vast sums areexpended yearly to exterminate the fly, it is soprolific that it breeds quicker than we can slay.

But we fear its cousin, the mosquito evenmore. The microscope has told us that thislittle insect is one of the chief messengers ofthe Angel of Death, therefore we fight it infear of our lives, but it thrives in spite of thevast sums yearly expended upon its exter-

mination. Then there is the milk we drink.Under ordinary conditions it is said thatthere are one hundred thousand germs to thecubic centimeter, but under the best andmost sanitary conditions this army ofdestroyers can be brought down to ten thou-sand. So, in fear and trembling, we pasteur-ize this fluid before we dare to give it to thechildren of tender age. Every drop of waterwe drink swarms with germ-life, says the

microscope, and even the coin and currencywherewith we purchase the necessities oflife are vehicles of death, for they are infect-ed with germs to an almost unbelievableextent. Once we started to launder them, but

it was found that the bankers could not soeasily detect counterfeits after they had beenwashed, so we abandoned the process. We

either fear the counterfeiters more than thegerms, or we love money more than health.

Is not this whole attitude ridiculous andunworthy of our high and noble estate, ashuman beings, as children of God? It is wellknown to science that an attitude of fearbreaks down the power of resistance of thebody, and thereby lays it liable to diseaseswhich would not otherwise be able to get afoothold. From the Occult point of view it isperfectly plain why this is so. The densebody which we see with our eyes is inter-penetrated by a vehicle made of ether andthe energy from the Sun, which pervades allspace, is constantly pouring into our bodythrough the spleen, which is a specializedorgan for the attraction and assimilation ofthis universal ether. In the solar plexus it isconverted into a rose colored fluid which

permeates the nervous system. This may becompared to electricity in the wires of anelectric or telegraphic system. By means ofthis vital fluid the muscles are moved andthe organs perform their vital functions sothat the body may express itself in perfecthealth. The better the health, the larger thequantity of this solar fluid which we are ableto absorb; but we can only utilize a certainpart of it and the surplus is radiated from the

body in straight lines. You have seen thepaper ribbons which are fastened to thefront of electric fans in candy stores andfruit stands. When the fan is set going thesestreamers float outward from the fan. The

streamers which flow from the wholeperiphery of the human body also radiate instraight lines, when we are in perfect health.

This condition is therefore aptly describedas radiant health. We speak of such a personas radiating life and vigor. Under such con-ditions no disease germs can ever get afoothold in his body. They can not enterfrom without because of these invisiblestreamers of force, any more than a fly canenter an opening in a building covered by anexhaust fan. And those micro-organismswhich enter the body with the food are alsoquickly expelled, for the vital processes inthe body are selective, as shown by the kid-neys, for instance, which excrete the wastematter while retaining vital substances nec-essary for the economy of the body.

But the moment we allow thoughts offear, worry, and anger, the body endeavors,as it were, to close the gates against an out-side foe, fancied or real. Then also the

spleen closes up, and ceases to specializethe vital fluid in sufficient quantities for thenecessities of the body, and we shall thensee a phenomenon which is analogous to theeffect of lowering the voltage or putting inmore resistance in the electric fan. In thatcase the paper streamers will begin to hangdown, they will no longer wave over thecandy or fruit to protect it and keep the fliesaway. Similarly in the human body, when

the thought of fear forces the partial closureof the spleen, the solar fluid does not gothrough the body with the same speed asbefore. It does not then radiate from theperiphery in straight lines, but these lines

become crumpled and thus they allow easyaccess to the little deleterious organismswhich may then feed unobstructed upon our

tissues and cause disease.Whether the consistent Christian

Scientists, Mental Scientists, or others whobelieve in Divine healing, know this law ornot, they act according to its dictates whenthey affirm that they are Children of God,that they have no reason to fear, for God istheir Father and will protect them so long asthey do not deliberately disregard the ordi-nary laws of life. Medical science knowsthat the so-called disease germs are not dan-gerous, unless there is soil predisposed totheir culture, and it is noteworthy that theNew York board of health has now abol-ished fumigation for all diseases exceptsmall-pox. Thus typhoid, pneumonia, diph-theria, and other diseases which were for-merly thought to be of so contagious anature that they must be guarded against by

fumigation, are now regarded as either lessdangerous or else it has been discovered thatthe process of fumigation is not efficient.

The actual fact and the truth in the matteris that contagion comes from within. So longas we live a common sense life, feeding ourbodies upon pure foods which come fromthe vegetable kingdom, taking a sufficientamount of exercise, and keeping mentallyactive, we may rest secure in the promise

that the Lord is our refuge. There shall noevil befall us so long as we thus show ourfaith by our works. On the other hand, if webelie our faith in God by disregard of Hislaws our expectations of health are vain.

Last year a Doctor who was imbued withfear of contagion in an abnormal degree vis-ited Mount Ecclesia. On the night of his

arrival a mosquito lighted upon his nose, hebrushed it away in great horror and askedanxiously: Are they malarious? He wasalways looking for pathological conditionsand soon went away dissatisfied with ourideas, especially the idea that fear attractsand trust in God repels pathological germs. This was to him ridiculous in the extreme. We had with us at that time one of our stu-dent friends, who was suffering from tuber-culosis, but by means of a rational diet andthe pure air of Mount Ecclesia, he was gain-ing fast, had, in fact, gained ten poundswhen this doctor took it upon himself to tellour poor friend that it was an outrage that hewould stay on Mount Ecclesia, or come intothe dining room, that he was a menace toeveryone at headquarters, etc. The pooryoung man became so disturbed that in spite

of all we could say to him he had no rest andhe left shortly afterwards. There is no doubtin our mind that had we been allowed tokeep him we would have eventually curedthe disease by the help of the Elder Brothersand our physical methods. As it is he diedshortly after, and we feel he was killed bythe inconsiderate fear of this doctor. And heis only one of thousands who are killed byothers, or who commit suicide by taking a

dose of fear, for fear will kill just as surelyas any mineral poison; it is perhaps evenmore deadly.

Shortly afterwards Mrs. Heindel and thewriter moved into the cottage where the

The Bible has been given to the WesternWorld by the Recording Angels, who give toevery nation the religion that is best fitted toguide it upon the path of its spiritual and

physical evolution; and if we seek for lightfrom that source we shall certainly find. Itmust be borne in mind that the Christ taughtthe multitude in parables, but, gave to Hisdisciples the meaning of those parables andthe deeper things concerning the mysteriesof the Kingdom of Heaven. Paul also taughta different, or rather a deeper truth to thosewho were strong in the faith, but gave themilk of the most elementary doctrines to

babes. Similarly, we must understand thatbesides the meaning which the Word of Godcarries upon its face, there is a deeper andhidden side, which we shall do well to pon-der upon tonight.

We have met again tonight for the purposeof concentrating our thoughts on the second

part of the Christ injunction: Heal thesick, for we consider this part of the Divinecommand just as binding upon His follow-ers as the first part, which exhorts us topreach the Gospel. But if we understandthis commandment aright, we shall not becontent with merely endeavoring to assuagethe present pain, sorrow, and suffering ofanyone or any number of people. We shallattempt to get to the bottom of all humansuffering so that by removing the maincause we may eradicate the effects. To dothis, to arrive at a true conclusion concern-ing the origin of sorrow, and suffering, andthe means for its permanent eradication, we

Let us first grasp the idea that the Earthwas not always as it is today; that there hasbeen an immense period of formation and

that this planet must have gone through var-ious stages of development before it reachedthe present condition. We see in the heavennebulae which are now fiery. We can under-stand that moisture must be condensed bythis fire from the cold expanse of space. Wecan also understand that this moisture isquickly evaporated when it comes in contactwith such a fiery, whirling vortex; that thesteam generated rises into space to be therecondensed again by the cold, thus goingthrough innumerable cycles of evaporationand condensation, until finally a crust isformed around the fiery core. This crustbecomes harder when gradually the super-fluous moisture is evaporated as a mist. Themist eventually gathers and condenses into acloud, falling again upon the planet as aflood and leaving conditions of climate as

we find them today upon the earth. Thesestages the Rosicrucian Teachings call theHyperborean, Atlantean, and Aryan Epochs.

We shall not speak of the first mentionedof these ons. But during the latter part ofthe Lemurian Epoch, when mankind stilllived on fire-girt islands of the formingcrust, they were very different from human-ity today. They were, in fact, giants of abodily shape which would be repulsive to

our present notions of bodily symmetry andbeauty; but it differed particularly in thisfact, that the Ego had not yet learned todraw within its body properly and perma-nently. In fact, they did not know at that

time that they had bodies; they used them asunconsciously as we use our digestive appa-ratus. Their sight was focused altogether in

the spiritual world and they saw God face toface, or rather those whom they thoughtwere Gods, namely the Divine Messengerswho guided them as children are guided bytheir parents; for at that time they had devel-oped no will.

Being unconscious of their bodies, theyknew neither birth nor death. The loss of aphysical vehicle happened frequently onaccount of the volcanic eruptions that werethe order of the day upon our forming earth;but it was like the falling of a dry leaf fromthe tree; it produced no difference at all intheir consciousness. Neither was the birth ofa new body a distracting event because allthrough birth and death their consciousnesswas focused in the invisible realm.

At certain times of the year the Angels, who have always been the harbingers of

birth, herded these hosts of childmen intogreat temples where the propagative act wasperformed as an act of sacrifice, under theproper planetary rays. In those moments ofintensely intimate contact, mans attentionwas temporarily drawn from the spiritualrealms to the physical world, and Adamknew his wife.

Thus the key-note of the body then con-ceived was in perfect tune with the harmony

of the spheres at that moment and thereforeparturition was painless. Health was perfect, and death had no terror for humanity of thatage.

But the Angels were not all o
