Winter Activity Day: Friday February 9, 2018
Sign up for Winter Activity Day went smoothly There will be no other
instructional programs at the school on this day. It will be a fun and
fulfilling day for all students and staff.
New Lockers
We are supper excited!! Pleasant View Middle School is getting new lockers. The first 2 phases of new lockers will be installed during March break. The final phase will take place after the break. Students in many classes will need to empty their lockers and take everything home for the break in order to secure their belongings .
Grade 8 Visual Arts
Several grade 8 visual arts classes have been studying shading techniques. Students practised basic techniques by stippling a basic 3-D geometric shape (cube, cone, sphere, and cylinder), showing different values (intensity) and a light source and shadow. Having learned the basics, students created their own designs to demonstrate those concepts learned. Some of the finished designs are shown below.

Making the Best of Winter Weather at our School
Principals are often asked how we decide whether it's too cold to
allow our students out in the schoolyard for recess. Fresh air and
exercise are important for children. It keeps them physically fit,
and helps them stay alert all through the school day. Parents can
help by making sure their children come to school prepared to
spend time outdoors. Hats, mitts, boots and a warm jacket are
important to keep students comfortable during lunch and recess.
But extreme cold can be dangerous, and parents want to know
that their children will be safe. When the temperature is predicted
to drop below -15C, the City of Toronto may declare a cold
weather alert. Schools are very sensitive to the needs of our
students and pay close attention to the weather, especially when
the wind-chill is below -20 C. The TDSB Severe Weather Protocol
is flexible, so that every principal can make a decision that meets
the needs of his or her school. It sets guidelines for when to
allow students outside for recess, when to make outdoor breaks
shorter, and when to keep students inside altogether. Canadian
winters can be wonderful but when the weather is cold, school
staff keep one eye on
the thermometer and
the other on the needs
of our students - a
perfect balance of fun
and safety.
February 19 is a Statutory Holiday
There will be no classes on Monday, February 19, 2018 to reflect the
province-wide statutory holiday called Family Day. The holiday
occurs on the third Monday in February of each year for the purpose
of emphasizing and celebrating the importance of families taking
time to be together.
Teachers are involved in professional learning on Friday, February
16 for the Board-wide Professional Activity Day, therefore, students
will not be attending school on Friday, February 16 and Monday,
February 19 which is the statutory holiday - Family Day.
