We need to find Jesus hidden in the faces of those around us who are sorrowful so that we may be able to encourage them with the encouragement we receive from God. These acts of compassion do not need to be great acts, but small acts with great love. A smile, a phone call or a handwritten note. Sometimes we might not know what to do. Jesus visits the house of Martha and Mary.

The story of the Samaritan opens with the words “a

certain man.” Today's reading opens with the words “a

certain woman.” The Samaritan is an example of how

a disciple should see and act. Mary is an example of

how a disciple should listen. Mary, a woman, is a

marginalized person in society, like the Samaritan.

Both do what is not expected of them. As a woman,

Mary would be expected, like Martha, to prepare

hospitality for a guest. Here again Jesus breaks with

the social conventions of his time. Just as a Samaritan

would not be a model for neighbourliness, so a woman

would not sit with the men around the feet of a teacher.

Both stories exemplify how a disciple is to fulfill the dual command which begins

chapter 10—love of God (Mary) and love of neighbor (the Samaritan). These are the

two essentials of life in the kingdom. By using the examples of a Samaritan and a

woman, however, Jesus is saying something more. Social codes and boundaries

were strict in Jesus' time. Yet to love God with all one's heart and one's neighbor

requires breaking those rules. The Kingdom of God is a society without distinctions

and boundaries between its members. It is a society that requires times for seeing

and doing and also times for listening and learning at the feet of a teacher. (Loyola Press)

By including this incident in his gospel, Luke is inviting us to become disciples of

the Lord by identifying with Mary as she sat at his feet – finding the truth that gives

meaning to our lives. (John Thornhill sm – Emmaus Series)

The lesson of today’s Gospel is to ask ourselves whether we

are so locked up in ourselves that we miss these wonderful

opportunities for enrichment, for human sharing and for

pondering the goodness that God has placed in others and in

our world. We can be part of the surprise offered by a loving

God to a people he has made his own. (Archbishop Denis Hart)

EMBRACING THE YEAR OF MERCY — Find your own Calcutta. God is the source of all compassion and encourages us in all of our own afflictions.

He is the source of all mercy. Sometimes He uses others to deliver His compassion

and encouragement. We see this in the Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Her life

exemplified the meaning of love and giving.

Mother Teresa’s ministry was centred on love. She cared for the poor’s physical

needs, but her main focus was on loving them. She

encouraged all people to give. She encouraged all

people to give not just from their abundance but to the

point of feeling the sacrifice of giving. Much of Jesus’

ministry was to those who were in need of consolation.

Blessed Mother Teresa gave us an example of this.

“Find the sick, suffering and lonely right there where you are… You can find Calcutta all over the world, if you only have eyes to see”

We need to find our own Calcutta. We need to find Jesus hidden in the faces of those around us who are sorrowful so that we may be

able to encourage them with the encouragement we receive from God. These acts of compassion do not need to be great acts, but

small acts with great love. A smile, a phone call or a handwritten note. Sometimes we might not know what to do. Sometimes our

prayers and the gift of our presence are what are needed. Blessed be God who encourages us so that we might encourage others.

Did you know about this wonderful

parish ministry provided by

Jan Favaloro. GODSTART PROGRAM

Godstart is a post Baptism support

program designed to help parents

develop their children’s faith,

introduced to us by Centacare, Melb.

It is very much what it says: giving children the opportunity to relate to

God right from the start of their lives. It is designed around making God

important to children from their first birthday through to their fourth and

hopefully beyond. It provides them with a regular connection with God

and our Parish until they go to school.

We do this by sending beautiful birthday cards to children who have

been baptised here in our Parish.

This program has been working in our Parish since August 2000. In

each card we enclose a Parish Information leaflet for parents providing

details of the Pastoral Centre and Parish Priest encouraging them to

keep in contact. Jan Favaloro, GODSTART Co-ordinator

Godstart is all about creating a link between the Parish and the family.

July is the MONTH OF THE MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD

The feast of the Precious Blood of our Lord was instituted in

1849 by Pius IX, but the devotion is as old as Christianity.

The early Fathers say that the Church was born from the

pierced side of Christ, and that the sacraments were brought

forth through His Blood.

"The Precious Blood which we worship is the Blood which the

Savior shed for us on Calvary and reassumed at His glorious

Resurrection; it is the Blood which courses through the veins

of His risen, glorified, living body at the right hand of God the

Father in heaven; it is the Blood made present on our altars

by the words of Consecration; it is the Blood which merited

sanctifying grace for us and through it washes and beautifies

our soul and inaugurates the beginning of eternal life in it." Catholic Culture.org

Through the Holy Ghost He offered himself Without blemish to God To the one who loved us

who washed our sins through His blood and made us kings and priests of God His father. To Him be glory and power.

Amen

FATHER JOHN DE LUCA , ordained to the Priesthood in St Mary’s

Cathedral, Sydney in 1966 is celebrating his Golden Jubilee at a

Mass in St Andrew’s Catholic Church, Malabar at 10.30 on

Saturday August 20, 2016.

He served as Administrator/Temporary at St Patrick’s Asquith in

1985. Please remember him in your prayers. RSVP by 13th August for catering purposes to

O Holy Spirit, comforting the sorrowful is a Christian duty and a work of mercy.

Give me the eyes to see others in need. Inspire me that by word, attitude and deed

I might try to brighten the days of others and make their burden easier to bear.

Help me remember when helping someone in sorrow that I am helping Christ Himself. Amen

MAY GOD BLESS ALL OF OUR PILGRIMS

Heavenly Father,

We ask you to bless our young people on their WYD pilgrimage,

Be their companion on the journey,

Their guide at the crossroads,

Their breath in their weariness,

Their protection in danger,

Their shelter from the storm,

Their shade in the heat,

Their light in the darkness,

Their consolation in times of discouragements,

Their mercy so they may witness

Your love and hope in the world.

We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen

Today’s theme is Be Merciful.

As our pilgrims dive deeper into their pilgrimages, it is a chance

for everyone to reflect on what Be Merciful means to you.

We’ve all heard the work ‘mercy’ in different forms over this Jubilee

year but what does it represent to you?

Is it an action, thought, who is involved, how is it lived out and

experienced, how do you receive it?

“Blessed are the merciful for they will be shown mercy” Mt 5:7 What does the Father’s mercy look like?
