for,"unknownreasons,"hasbegunattackingitsownthyroidandcreatesantibodiestoit,andthenthatcompromisesthefunctionofthatorganoroftissue.So,wecanhaveautoimmunitytoourthyroid,youknow,weseeitsometimesinpolycysticovariansyndrome.Wecanseeautoimmunitytowardsourovaries.Wecanseeittowardsourjointsinrheumatoidarthritis,towardsskininpsoriaticarthritis.So,autoimmunityis...youknow,thewayIseeitisthebody'sonhighalertandattackingitself.So,there'salotofinflammationandhostilityinthebody.Andagain,forunknownreasons,andthenthatsetsoffawholecascadeofjustchaoswithinthebody.Katie:Gotit.So,I'mcuriousbecauseIam...so,youmentionedHashimoto's,whichiswhatI'vestruggledwithformany,manyyears.AndIknowmanyofmylistenershavestruggledwitheitherthatoranotherformofautoimmunedisease.I'mcuriousifthishasbeenapersonalstruggleforyouaswellormorefromthepractitionerside.You'vejustaddressedthisquiteabit.Aimee:Well,both.So,Ihaveeczemaandasthma,whichareboth...youknow,asthmawasn'talwaysconsideredanautoimmunecondition,butnowisconsideredone.There'salotthatareallofasudden,youknow,likeendometriosisisacommononenow,andevenPCOS,peopleareonthefenceabout,butithascharacteristics.So,eczema,though,isatelltalethatthere'ssomeautoimmunitygoingoninthebody.AndI'vebeenalong-timeeczemasufferermywholelife.Now,it'snotthemost,youknow,Ithinkprohibitingautoimmunity,butitwouldsetthecascade.HadInotbeencontrollingit,IthinkwhereIwouldhaveheaded,likemostwomen,isintoHashimoto's.So,youknow,youcanbeonthisspectrumwhereyouhavesomeautoimmunityandthenitcantriggerotherautoimmunity.ButIseeitalotclinically.Iwrotemysecondbook,"Yes,YouCanGetPregnant,"anditwasallaboutfertility.AndwhatIrealizedintheresearchwasthat,youknow,mostofthesewomenwalkingaroundwithunexplainedfertilitychallengesareactuallydealingwithamisdiagnosed,undiagnosed,ormismanaged,oralloftheaboveautoimmunecondition.Andthat'swhatledmetowriting"BodyBelief,"becausewhenyoudotheresearch,andyouknowbecauseyouyourselfareoneofthem,Imean,autoimmunityisaffecting30millionAmericanwomen.Andthat'sjusttheonesthatarediagnosed.So,asaclinicianwith15yearsofpatientcare,Iseeautoimmunityimpactinglivesallthetime.Andthenmyself,ofcourse,I'vereallylearnedhowtomanagemyownandnotallowittoprogressintoanythingworse.Katie:Andthat'ssuchanimportantkeybecauseyouoften,atleastclinically,youdon'tseeautoimmunediseaseinisolation.It'sactuallyagreatthing.Youkeepitinisolationbecause,likeyousaid,it'snotadiseasethat'scausedby,forinstance,likestrepthroat.It'scausedbyaspecificbacteria,there'snotthatconnection.It'sthebodyhavinganinternalreactiontoitself,andtherecanbemanypotentialreasons.So,Idefinitelyhavemytheories,butI'mreallycurious,whatdoyouthinkaresomeofthecontributingfactorstothisriseinautoimmunediseases,that’sevenaffectingchildrenatreallydrasticrates?Aimee:Well,so,fromtheWesternmedicalperspectiveorthecurrentscientificresearch,youknow,autoimmunityisontherise.It'sinthelast30yearshasquadrupledandit'sincidenceaffectingwomen75%morethanmen.Andwomenintheirprime,butyes,it'sallthewaydowntochildrenatthisstage.So,ourgenesdon'tchangethatfast.So,itcannotbeourgenetics.Ithastobeenvironmentalinfluences,mostlikelythefactthatwe'veintroduced80,000to100,000chemicalsintoourenvironmentsincethe1980s.So,that'swheretheWesternviewpointseesit.

Myperspectiveisalittledifferent,youknow,withatrainingintraditionalChinesemedicineandbeinganacupuncturistandanherbalist,I'malsotaughttolookattheemotionalsideofdisease.So,wesaythatanydisease,illness,disharmonyinthebody,there'saphysicalcomponent,butthere'salsoanemotionalcomponent.AndwhatIseeclinicallyisthatmostwomeninoursociety...andautoimmunityisaffectingwomenintheirprime,their20s,30s,and40s.Imean,it'saffectingwomen,obviously,beyond40,butitstartedprobablyintheir20sor30s,andmaybethesymptomsdidn'treallypresentthemselvesloudlyenoughuntiltheyhittheir50s.Butthatwomenarereallyhardonthemselves,womenareattackingthemselves,andthey'renotgoodenough.They'renotachievingenough.Andsoif...youknow,inChinesemedicine,we'llstepbackandsay,"Okay,soifthebody'sattackingitselfonthiscellularlevel,onthisphysicallevel,whereonanemotionallevelareyouattackingyourself?"Andthatlendsitselftothesamelevelofhostilityandinflammation,youknow,it'sjustcomingfromanemotionalspaceversusonlyfromanenvironmental,oranutritional,orphysicalspace.So,tome...andthat'swhyIwrote,"BodyBelief,"youknow,thefirsttwopiecesof,"BodyBelief"arereallyabouttheemotional,spiritualreconnectingtoyourselfandshiftingyourbeliefsaboutyourbody.Andthen,ofcourse,there'sawholedietandlifestyleplanintheretoreallytameinflammation.Butuntilweworkontheemotionalpiece,Idon'tthinkitsetsthestageforradicalhealingthewaywearecapableofwithdealingwithautoimmunity.So,yeah,Ithinkthere'smanylayersandIdon'tthink,iftosay,thatanyone'stoblamethattheirthoughtsarecreatingtheirautoimmunity,butthatIdon'tthinkwe'resupportingourselvesinallthewaysthatwecouldbeonanemotionallevel.Katie:Iwouldagreewithyou.Andthat'sbeen,probablyforme,thehardestpartofmyownjourneytogetto,becauseI'mverytypeA,andmybackgroundisinresearchandjournalism.So,mydefaultistoresearchmywayintofixingaproblem.Andso,IfeellikeIhavedonethat,Ihavegonedeeponeveryphysicalpossibilityofthingsthatcanhelpautoimmunityandreducinginflammationand,ofcourse,thefactorsthatweallknow,likeyouneedtogetenoughsleepandyouneedtogetsunshine,andallthosethings.ButIthinkbecauseemotionsareinvisible,likeit'shardsometimestorealizejusthowprofoundlytheyimpactus.So,canyoulikeexplainsomeoftheexamplesyou'veseenofthisinwomen.AndI'mhappytosharemyexperienceaswell.Ijustknow,like,foryears,Iwouldkindofputonagameface,andbelike,"Icanpushthroughthis,Iwilljustfightharder.Iwilldomorethings."Andit'sbeenalessoninthelastcoupleofyearstorealizeIactuallyhavetoletgoandtogivemyselfthesameloveandforgivenessthatIgivetofriendsandfamilysoeasily.Butthatseemstobesuchthebigstruggle.So,I'mcuriouswhat...specificallywithinthis,themind-bodyconnection,whatkindofthingsareyouseeingwomencometoyouwithandwhataretheystrugglingthrough?Aimee:Well,again,there'ssomanylayerstoit,butIagree.Mostwomendoreallywell.Theywantmetojustgivethem,youknow,whatdiettofollowandwhatsupplementstotake,andchecktheboxes.Andthen,often,it's,"Well,I'mdoingallthosethingsandit'sstillnotworking."Andso,youknow,IthinkIsawthatenoughovertheyearsthatIbegantorealize,"Okay,wehavetounpacktheemotionalspaceaswell."AndwhatIseeandwhatIhearof,youknow,andthrougheverythingthatI'mexposedtoandallthewomenIdealwithis,isthereisnoself-compassion,there'sverylittlekindnesstothemselves.There'sverylittleflexibility.There'sverylittleunderstanding.IsaiditinmyfirstbookwhenIwroteitin2009,andIsaid,"Ifyouwouldn'tsayittoyourbestfriendthatway,youshouldn'tsayittoyourselfthatway."So,it'sjustturningonourfilter,again,andhearingwhatistheconversationthatwe'rehavingintheprivacyofourownminds?And

areyoucheeringyourselfonorareyoubeatingyourselfup?Because,again,ifwe'resteppingbackandsaying,"Okay,it'senvironmentaltoxins,andit'sinflammation,youknow,inthebody."So,sure,thosearephysicalthings,butthencanemotionsbetoxicandcanemotionsbeinflammatory?Andso,howareyoutalkingtoyourselfonaregularbasis?AndIcanalreadytellwithyouthatthattype-Apersonality,I'mtotallythesameway.Andmystoryalwaysis,"It'snotgoodenough.You'renotdoingit,youknow,you'renotworkinghardenough.You'renottryinghardenough."Andthat'sthetypicalpersonalitythatseemstowindupwithautoimmunity.Now,that's,ofcourse,ageneralization,butwetendtoseethatthesetype-Asthatarereallyhardonthemselvesandnothingreallyisgoodenough.So,theyaretheonesthatsetthestage,youknow,thatconversationthatthey'rehavingintheprivacyoftheirownmindsets,thatstageforthatreally,youknow,intenseinflammatoryreactionthatlendsitselftowardsautoimmunity.So,theworkIdidwriting,"BodyBelief"andwhatIseeintheclinicallthetimeisIjusttrytogetwomenandmen...youknow,Itreatmen,Itreatchildren,Itreatmoms,andItreateveryone,butjustcanyousayitbetter?Howcanyousayitbettertoyourself?Andin,"BodyBelief,"Igooversomereallycommonbeliefsofthingslike,"Oh,I'mtooold,what'sthepoint?"Or,"Oh,it'smygenetics."Iteachyoutoquestionallofthesebeliefsthatwewereeitherborninto,havebecomeingrained.It's,youknow,beliefismyteacher.I'mabigAbraham-Hickspersonandshealwayssays,"Abeliefisjustathoughtyoukeepthinking,"andyoucanthinkthatthoughtintoreality.Andthenthere'sneuroscienceresearchtosupportthat.Butwhatbeliefsareyouwalkingaroundholdingandrepeatingtoyourselfallthetime?AndIbelieve...thisismybelief,butattherootofit,there'sworthinessissues.Youdon'tbelievethatyou'reworthyoftheradicalhealingorthatyoudon'tbelievethatyourbodycanheal.Youdon'tbelieveyouhavethegoods.Youdon'tbelieveyouweregiventherightgenesor,"Oh,it's..."youknow,nobodyreallyfeelsthatgood.It'sthesebasic,limitingbeliefsthatwe'rewalkingaroundwiththatarereallylimitingusbecauseourbeliefsdictateourbehaviors,whichthenultimatelydictatesourhealth.Andso,ifwe'renotinsupportofourbodyorinsupportofourchoices,insupportofourhealth,insupportof,youknow,whenwelookinthemirrorandseewhoweare,arewecheeringourselvesonorsayingsomethingterribletoourselves?That'sabigculprit.Imean,Istruggledwitheatingdisordersinthepastandbodydysmorphicissues,anditreallysetsthestageforsomemajorinflammatoryreactionsthroughoutthebodyonaphysiologicalandcellularlevel.So,inthereis,tome,thecruxofthehealing,iswherewehavetolearntopracticeself-love.AndIknowit'scliché,butitiskey:kindness,compassion,patiencewithourselves,andjusttakeastepback.OnethingthatIsaytomyselfallthetimeandItryisIjustremindmyselfI'mdoingthebestIcando,youknow,andI'mshowingupeverydayandI'mdoingthebestIcando.Andthatsoothesme.So,that'swhatIwouldloveforwomen,istobegintosaykinder,moresoothingthingstothemselvesintheprivacyoftheirownmind.Andthatwouldcalmtheinflammation.Katie:Yeah.It'sbeeninterestingformetosee,inthelastcoupleofyears,bothinmyownlifeandalsojustinreadingandresearchingbecause,likeIsaid,it'seasytodiscountthatmind-bodyconnectionandhowtrulyimportantourthoughtsaretoourwholelife.Butyouseethisinespeciallylikepeoplewithterminaldiseasesorpeoplefacingvery,verytoughthings,whoshifttheirmindsetandhavethisspontaneousremissionwheretheyheal.Andit's,like,thingslikethatshouldalertustothefactthat,yes,obviously,diet'simportant.My
