It is a great honor to welcome you to our residence here on

Tygerberg campus.

As you will be entering a very exciting period in your life with lots

of changes, we hope that you will find within the community of

Hippokrates a place to be able to grow and adapt to the new

phase in your life. Within this community we strive to a culture of

celebrating the uniqueness of each individual and yet also work

on the things we have in common that holds us together. Your

contribution to this would be of great value.

Being the 40th year of existence for Hippokrates, you have a

wonderful and unique opportunity to share in making 2016 a

special year.

My family and I look forward to meeting you when you come.

All of the best with the final exams at the end of the year.

Johan Groenewald and family.

Dear new student to Hippokrates,

RESIDENCE HEAD

Page 3: Hippocrates Prospectus

PRIMARIUSAs a starting point, I’d just like to congratulate you on being accepted

into Hippokrates for 2016! We as residence are looking forward to

meeting you and are incredibly excited to start our journey with you in

an adventure that we trust will be unforgettable; filled with great

memories, tight relationships and a well-rounded life-education. An

adventure like none you have ever experienced.

So, what is this Hippokrates thing? Hippokrates is more than just a

bunch of walls, cool name and a roof. It’s more than a bunch of young

Stellies students living in close proximity to one another. Hippokrates is

a community, brotherhood and sisterhood intertwined that not only

links those living in the building right now, but all those that have been

privileged enough to have experienced life within this res’s walls. It’s

the bond that binds us all, formed through tough and fun times.

A bond highlighted by our values: Respect, Dignity, Diversity,

Transparency and Excellence.

There are people from all over, here, and not just geographically. We

are all meeting here in Hippo, at different points on our own paths and

this diversity of perspective is what makes this place as awesome as it

is. Guys and girls live amongst each other in 5 female and 5 male

sections. This interaction allows for fantastic life opportunities, where

we learn how to interact with one another primarily as people – with

respect and dignity, no matter their circumstances.

Hippokrates is a residence with a long and rich history. We are a

residence that will be turning 40 years old in 2016 and with this comes a

longstanding reputation in medical circles, on main campus and on

Tygerberg campus as one of the most prestigious identities to have. We

are well known on main campus as a residence of excellence.

Page 4: Hippocrates Prospectus

PRIMARIUS We have a reputation for being good in every aspect of residence life

and evidence of this is seen in our achievements on the sports fields,

winning kleinsêr nationally (if you don’t know what it is, go Google

Hippokrates dames kleinsêr 2015), our culture evenings and in the

quality of men or women that leave Hippo after experiencing this

environment. Medics sport is also of top quality with many divisions

winning their various competitions last year and the years before that.

These are but a couple of highlights of which there are many..

Academically we are a strong residence with many renowned specialists

in all areas of the health sciences having had their roots in Hippokrates.

It is not uncommon for one of your lecturers or doctors in hospital to be

an old Hippokrates resident, just go ask the vice-chancellor!

All of this said, we’re not just about results. Sure, excellence is

something to strive for, but when the glory of victory over others fades

you find what Hippo’s gees is really based in. It is a home to an

extremely diverse family of talented, empowered and skilled young men

and women who have a unique opportunity to make a positive

difference in South Africa. There are very few other environments

where health sciences students get to form a covalent network like

ours; a network with the potential to change the world as we know it.

We are welcoming you to this network.

I’m sure you’re itching to get moving on your journey through university

and Hippo looks forward to being with you every step of the way.

Whether you love sports, music, or spending a moment relaxing alone or

with friends between classes, Hippokrates is the place. So from us as a

house committee, and as residents, we wish you and your family a

blessed and safe December holiday and we look forward to welcoming

you into our Hippokrates family!

Yours sincerely,

Christopher de Blocq

WELCOME

It’s the first day. You slowly make your way into the foyer, trying to

take in as much of your new home as possible while at the same time

struggling to compress the enormous amount of excitement you feel

boiling up from deep down in your stomach. “Stay cool, just stay cool”

you keep repeating to yourself, “can’t afford to show them these

weird emotions, not now”. The greetings from overly friendly faces

confuse you. It totally contradicts everything that was propagated

about a Stellenbosch residence. “No, this can’t be” you tell yourself,

“They must be putting up an act”. No, I can truthfully tell you, they’re

not.

From the very first second you step foot into Hippokrates, you as new-

comer will be seen as a worthy and equal member of the Hippokrates

family. We celebrate you as person, making a courageous transition

from wherever or whatever you come from. And we sincerely look

forward to being part of where you are going.

Welcoming you into our home is inviting you to come in, sit down,

smell the coffee, hear the music and connect as the loving people of

this planet like we were intended to connect from the beginning.

My beautiful colleague and I are focused on insuring a welcoming

programme in which you will be celebrated as a youthful human and

encouraged to be exactly who you were called to be.

So now you’re thinking,”What exactly does one bring to the greatest

adventure of their lives?” The short answer is EVERYTHING, but

because we’re here to make your transition as easy as possible, we’re

gonna help you by being a bit more specific. Because that’s what we’re

here for.

To your new Home

Page 6: Hippocrates Prospectus

WELCOMEFirst and foremost, there is Hippodrag. For boys, it is a white collared

shirt (preferably short-sleeve just so you don’t get too hot), navy tie,

navy blazer, beige chinos (formal pants) and black closed shoes. For

girls: It is a white short-sleeve v-neck shirt, beige skirt or pants and

beige or brown sandals. You will be required to have these clothes

from the first day and for any faculty programme during the

Welcoming week. It’s a uniform that is specific to Hippokrates and is

something that we wear every Wednesday.

Next, bring anything that you feel will make you feel comfortable and

will help you to adapt to your new home. Whether it be your favourite

teddy bear that has been with you since childhood or your favourite

photos of all your friends to put up in your room or even the flag of

your favourite rugby team that has lived in your room before you did,

whatever will help you make your space feel more like you own it.

And finally, bring an open mind and plenty of enthusiasm. “The world

belongs to those who dare to live” – a cool quote I once saw on the

internet. Here you will meet lots of different people and have the

opportunity to experience many different things that those before

you may not have had. You will be lucky to meet people who are ready

to invest time in you and teach you about things you’ve never thought

about, all you have to do is be willing to listen and learn from them as

well as share your experiences. We’re so excited for you to join our

family and learn as much about us as we will about you. Just challenge

yourself!

Enjoy the last couple of months before the start of what we believe

will be the best time of your life.

Sincere regards

Neil Mathee and Sivuyisiwe Jekwa

IMPORTANT INFO

Each room has electrical wall plugs, a built-in cupboard, desk, a chair, a bed, a

mattress, curtains and a computer network point with internet access

capabilities. In each double room there is a set of the aforementioned for

each student. It is advisable to bring your own desk lamp and coat hangers.

The use of a laundry room is also available, equipped with washing machines

as well as dryers. The cost of utilizing these machines are automatically

charged onto your student account. These facilities are also available as a

laundry service during the day, where you can leave your washing to be done

while you are in class. Hippokrates, like the other residences on Tygerberg,

does not have a dining hall where residents eat together, but there are two

sets of hotplates in the kitchenettes, where residents can prepare their own

meals in each section. Microwaves and fridges are not provided. The

Cafeteria in the Tygerberg Student Centre provides an easy alternative to

preparing your own meals. These prepared meals can be booked in advance

and charged to your student account at very reasonable prices. Telephones

are available, and letters can be mailed to:

IMPORTANT INFO

Newcomers will be divided into both an academic Tutor-mentor group as well as

a general mentor group. The role of the academic mentor is to assist newcomers

in adjusting to the shift in workload (in their respective courses) which is seen

from school to university. First years meet with their tutor-mentor during the

first academic week, and will from there onwards continue to do so frequently

throughout the year. The tutor-mentors are mostly in their second year of

studying and have been selected for the position based on their academic

achievement in during the previous year. The general mentor fulfils the role of

helping newcomers adjust to all the aspects of university life - other than

academics, focussing specifically on the general wellbeing of the student. We

firmly believe in following a balanced lifestyle and know that varsity is about so

much more than just receiving a degree. The first years meet their mentors on

the first day of the welcoming program, and have contact sessions with their

mentors for the duration of the welcoming program, as well as throughout the

rest of the year.

Additional services and facilities on campus include:

• Tygerberg Student Centre (also known as the TSS) with an ABSA ATM and an

ABSA student bureau within walking distance.

• A Van Schaiks book store and Student Service Office that stocks all the

Supplies you require as a Health Sciences student.

• Sports fields (rugby/hockey/soccer), 4 tennis courts, squash courts, a

Gymnasium and a swimming pool.

• Student Health Services (i.e. a doctor, nurse and psychologist) and the Centre

for Student Guidance and Development (021 808 8858).

MADMAD excites, creates and connects everyone on campus.

We want the student body to unite for the same purpose bymaking a decision to make a difference in the lives of otherstudents and the surrounding communities. We want all of

us to believe in the impossible, to bring about change inthe world that so desperately needs it, to raise R1 million

rand so we can make a social impact. We want MAD to trulybe an organization students can and want to relate to

MAD Theme

The world is becoming smaller and smaller throughtechnology and innovation. We live in a world where the

largest taxi company does not own any vehicles (Uber), thelargest media owner does not create any content (Facebook),

the largest accommodation providers owns no realestate (Airbnb). We live in a world where everything and

everyone is connected constantly and can share ideas minuteto minute. Yet we are so focussed on ourselves and our

differences, we are so focussed on what we need that weforget about our community. We forget about the people

around us. We forget that we need resources in the future. We forget that we need to be connected with these things as

well. MAD wants everyone to see our differences as anopportunity to connect. MAD aims to connect cultures,

connect students, connect communities, connect futures andCONNECT US.
