THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD January 3, 2016

Dear Parishioners, The story of the Magi is a story about the ways that God reveals himself and even more about the different responses which his revelation receives. The Magi represent the pagan world, all those whom one would have said were not particu-larly gifted with divine revelation. In the eyes of God's chosen people the pagans were "far away" from God. Yet here Mat-thew tells a story of how they were "brought near" by the light of Christ shining in the world.

A key part of the impact of this story is the way that these outsiders are guided by God. Revelation comes to them through their own fascination with the universe, with the signs they discern in nature. Revelation comes to them through the skill and expertise that they had developed in their study of the universe. Despite the secular character of the skill and exper-tise that began their search, Matthew's Magi are no mere astronaut mers (or for that matter astrologers) in search of an interesting new phenomenon. Their search is based on a sense of wonder which is fundamentally religious. This wonder is in fact the search after God and his presence in the world and it leaves them open to the revelation that is to come and that will move them to worship.

What can we learn from the Magi in relation to our own life-journey? In the first place, they were not wandering aimlessly: they were going in a definite direction with a specific purpose in mind. They may at times have had to alter course slightly because of some difficulty or other, but they kept moving steadily forward towards the aim they had in view: to worship the new-born king. Their following of the star makes us question our own direction in life. The star can be understood as representing the en-counter with God, which fills us with delight. Are we as intent as the wise men on following our star, being attentive to the deepest desire of our heart, which is the desire for God?

The teaching of the wise men is that we should look for that star which rises in our hearts, the star which fills us with de-light, and, when we find it, be prepared to follow it without hesitation. Like the wise men we will have many difficulties, not least of which will be those who tell us that our journey is pointless. We will also have to struggle with our own lack of cour-age or determination. Yet if we keep going forward, our eyes fixed on the star, we will at length arrive at the place of en-counter and be able, like them, to worship the new-born king.

The Magi are models for the faith community. We are called to be open to the signs of God's incarnation, we are called to go in search of a clearer vision of where those signs lead. We are called to offer ourselves with whatever gifts we have, in the worship of God incarnate. Where are we to find the signs of that presence of God today? It may be through a devel-oped sense of wonder at the universe in which we are placed. It may be in the love of another person. It may even be in the depths of our own being. To find this presence of God it may be that we don't have to travel any physical distance at all. It may be that we will find God unexpectedly near to us. The journey of the Magi involved travelling over many hundreds or even thousands of miles. Our journey to God may not require any physical travel at all but rather the long spiritual journey to our own depths where God dwells. Are you ready for the journey?

Fr. Christopher Bennett

Dear Parishioners,

As we begin a New Year, I would like to ex-tend a heartfelt Thank You to everyone who have made our Advent and Christmas cele-brations a wonderful experience for all who come to St. Christopher to worship. Your continued support of our ministry makes this Parish a very vibrant and faith-filled commu-nity.

I wish to thank all the ministers who put in so much precious time in helping create and cel-ebrate meaningful and beautiful ceremonies, such as: ushers, lectors, commentators, min-isters of communion, musicians, cantors and choirs, altar society and environment minis-ters, altar servers, the Liturgy Committee, and presiders.

Our sacred spaces in the Church and in Healy Hall during the Liturgies were truly magnifi-cent worship spaces that allowed us to gather as Community to herald the birth of the Child.

May this Child of Bethlehem, this Jesus of Nazareth, continue to bless us with His gifts of peace, hope, love and joy as we welcome the New Year that has just dawned upon.

A very grace-filled New Year to all.

Events

If you left a picture of your loved one in the church during the month of November for All Souls, you can pick it up in the parish of-fice, during office hours. Mon—Friday, 8:30am to 12:00pm and 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us

that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved.

Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by mon-

ey; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking hap-piness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:

“If you knew the gift of God!”

You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by for-

giveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in

weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and

forgiven by God.

Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the

poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.

We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live

and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.

Amen.
