"I have called You by Name, You are Mine" an invitation to join the journey.

Interested in Becoming Catholic?

Have you ever asked yourself the following questions? ♦ How is the Catholic Christian faith different from other Christian religions? ♦ Will being a member of the Catholic Church make a difference in my life? ♦ Will being a Catholic help me develop and strengthen my relationship with God?

If you have asked yourself any of these questions, the RCIA process will help you answer them. Life is a journey on which a person is constantly learning, growing, and changing. This process is a step in that journey and lays the groundwork, through information and experiences, in helping you decide if you want to be a member of the Catholic faith. The RCIA will provide you the opportunity to ask questions, pray, and experience what is meant by being a Catholic Christian and entering into a relationship with God and the Catholic community.

You may be wondering: Who can be part of the RCIA ? ♦ Someone who has never been baptized. ♦ Someone who has been baptized in another faith tradition, but who wishes to become Catholic. ♦ A person who has been baptized a Catholic, but not fully catechized, that is, not having received their first Holy Communion and/or the Sacrament of Confirmation.

If you have an interest or know of someone who is interested, please contact: Bruce Zorio at [email protected] or 408-269-2226. Ext. 212

The Transfiguration of the Lord August 6, 2017

The heavens proclaim his justice; all peoples see his glory.

-- Psalm 97:6

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

As the Latin Mass evolved in the first six centu-ries, the central prayer, what the Greeks called the anaphora and what we call today the Eucharistic Prayer, became fairly standard almost everywhere in the West. What we now know as Eucharistic Prayer I, or the Roman Canon, took a complex shape, not at all like the fluid and spontaneous prayers of early Rome, but a real architectural construction. The city of Rome was in a terrible condition by that time, and a series of political upheavals, plagues, and invasions swept through. Not much of Rome's former glory was left standing, except for the pope, who became a symbol of protection and hope for the troubled people. The structures of law and administration were swept away in the chaos, and the pope gradually assumed authority to restore and maintain order. Soon, the public liturgy of Rome became the city's only glory. The Romans wanted "good order" not only in their civic life, but in their liturgy. One prayer, increas-ingly enriched by music (although when the music tried to overtake the prayer the pope banned musi-cal instruments entirely) was the new rule of the day. That one prayer, the Roman Canon, was sol-idly in place when the first liturgical book we have, the Leonine Sacramentary of 540, was com-piled. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Director of Catechetical Ministry Robert Rodrigues:

I would like to take this moment to introduce myself to the families of St. Christopher Church. I am Rob-ert Rodrigues, your new Director of Catechetical Ministry for grades 1-8. I was born in California in the East Bay and am the youngest of four children. My father still lives in the house we grew up in and he turned 95 in June; my mother passed away ten years ago. I have served the Church in various minis-tries, 15 years in parishes as a Director of Religious Education, six years as DRE for the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon, and I am the former Director of Pastoral Education and associate professor at Mt. An-gel Seminary in Oregon. I am also the former Direc-tor of the St. Francis retreat center in San Juan Bau-tista. I hold a B.A. in Religious Studies and a Masters in Theology with an emphasis in Religious Education and am trained as a spiritual director. I am honored and excited to have been invited to minister here at St. Christopher and look forward to walking with you on your journey of faith.

IN REMEMBRANCE Let us pray for all who have died, that

they may rejoice with the Risen Lord, especially:

Jean Delaney Andersen,

Evelyn Ayres, and Debra Corica

Did you know that we have an Online Giving pro-gram here at St. Christopher Parish? Our Online Giving program allows you to donate using your VISA, Mastercard, or bank account. Donations can be made for the Sunday Offering as well as most Second Collections and the Parish Renewal Fund. Why use the Online Program? Because gifts are done electronically you will no longer need to worry about remembering to bring your envelopes to church. It also allows you to use VISA or Master-card so you will be able to earn your miles or other awards on your credit cards. You can access our secure site by using the link on our parish website at www.SaintChris.com. Thank you in advance for you support of our parish.

Pass It Forward! Over 200 children and young people, 1st through 8th grade, will sign up this fall to learn more about Jesus and the Catholic faith. You can help them learn and grow by becoming a catechist for Faith Formation. With classes offered Sunday mornings and Tuesday afternoons you are almost sure to find a time that fits your schedule. As you nurture the faith of our young, you will learn and grow as well! As one long-time catechist put it, “I learn so much from the chil-dren!” We provide you with training, materials, and support. Classes begin September 10th for Sunday and September 12th for Tuesday. If interested, or for more information, contact Robert Rodrigues, Direc-tor of Religious Education at 408-264-8764 or email [email protected]

To understand the story of the Transfiguration, we need to embrace Jesus’ Beatitudes and his command to love our enemies. If we do not ac-cept his sermon, adopt his wisdom of non-violence, and walk with him along the difficult road of universal love, we will never ascend the mountain of God with him in search of God’s blessing. Because we are so steeped in the world’s violence, it is hard to resist the patriotic lure of war and to accept such otherworldly val-ues. But if we love Jesus and want to follow him, we have to accept his teachings, even if no one else in our families, communities, neigh-borhoods, or churches does. As his followers, we have to adhere to his strict path of active non-violence, come what may. No matter how desperate the situation, how noble the cause, how loud the cry, how servile the patriotism, or how terrible the threat, we will never hurt or kill another, and never again be silent in the face of injustice, poverty, nuclear weapons, or war. From now on, as disciples of the non-violent Jesus, we are going to love our enemies…even if it kills us. Even more shocking, he commands this practice not just because it's the right thing to do, the moral thing to do, or even the most practical thing to do…but because this is what God does. We will love our enemies because God loves God’s enemies and we are God’s children…so, we do what God does. Over 50’s

Are you looking for a satisfying but flexible volun-teer opportunity? Peninsula Food Runners is a vol-unteer organization dedicated to alleviate hunger and reduce food waste. We are building our volunteer base in Santa Clara County and invite you to join us. Peninsula Food Runners volunteers pick up excess perishable and prepared food from participating Do-nors (restaurants, caterers, bakeries, corporate cafete-rias, etc.), and then deliver the food directly to our Recipients (shelters, day centers for the elderly, Boys and Girls Clubs, etc.). Shifts normally take less than 90 minutes and can work around your schedule. Come join our team of volunteers! Go to peninsulafoodrunners.org and reg-ister under Volunteer Sign-Up. Questions: email Molly Rhine at [email protected] or call (408) 396-8705.

As summer comes we all take some time to enjoy our vacations and family so there are no activities until September. However, the annual dues of $5.00 are payable now. You may send your check made out to the Over 50's Club to Mary Jenecke at 1180 Dean Ave. San Jose, CA 95125. All members of the parish are encouraged to become members and enjoy our monthly meetings, luncheons and Bingo games.
