Are we the loyal, good servants, fulfilling the ex-pectations of Jesus? As the Gospel suggests, this is not based on predetermined orders/schedules, but on our ongoing commitment to implement our respective roles in the service of the Lord. Responsible stewardship flows from a laity knowledgeable of their status in the Church in the 21st Century and the manner in which each one's special talents mesh with the posi-tion of the Church in our secular world. For those of us raised with the view of the back of the priest during the Latin Mass, with the fo-cus on the absolutes of the Baltimore Catechism and one's own spirituality, the arrival of Pope John XXIII and Vatican II was/is a breath of fresh air, a threat to one's faith, or a bit of both. Our spirituality was now expected to be integral-ly linked with the "real world" A few excerpts from "Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity" from Vatican II : (5) "Hence the mission of the Church is not only to bring the message and grace of Christ to men but also to penetrate and perfect the temporal order with the spirit of the Gospel. In fulfilling this mission of the Church, the Christian laity exercise their apostolate both in the Church and in the world, in both the spir-itual and temporal orders."; (10) "As sharers in the role of Christ as priest, prophet, and king, the laity have their work cut out for them in the life and activity of the Church. Their activity is so necessary within the Church communities that without it the apostolate of the pastors is often unable to achieve its full effectiveness." (14) "A vast field for the apostolate has opened up on the national and international levels where the laity especially assist with their Christian wis-dom. In loyalty to their country and in faithful ful-fillment of their civic obligations, Catholics should feel themselves obliged to promote the true common good."; (31) "Laymen should above all learn the principles and conclusions of the social doctrine so as to become capable of working for the development of this doctrine to the best of their ability and of rightly applying these same principles and conclusions to indi-vidual cases." How do I fit into our evolving, pilgrim Church? Comments or input Please contact: Doug Harper [email protected]

We are building our volunteer base in Santa Clara County and invite you to join us. Peninsula Food Runners volunteers pick up excess perishable and prepared food from participating Do-nors (restaurants, caterers, bakeries, corporate cafe-terias, etc.), and then deliver the food directly to our Recipients (shelters, day centers for the elderly, Boys and Girls Clubs, etc.). Shifts normally take less than 90 minutes and can work around your schedule. Come join our team of volunteers! Go to peninsulafoodrunners.org and register under Volunteer Sign-Up.
