ETCSEE 2016 – the only platform for energy traders in the region

This year almost 50 senior speakers shed their light on the developments in the east European power and gas markets at ETCSEE. As the event took place in Romania one of the most sensitive topics related to the ban on bilateral trading.

The Secretary of State, Ms Corina Popescu mentioned in her opening speech that it is better for a strong market signal that all transactions are done on OPCOM. After lunch Niculae Havrilet, President of the Romanian regulator ANRE, said that the decision about lifting the ban on bilateral trading outside the OPCOM exchange is up to the Romanian government but he doubted that the government will change the law. Romania wants to keep cheap power in the country but exports bans are against the principles of the EU.

In the afternoon the discussion continued; Ion Lungu, Chairman of AFEER and Director General of CEZ Trade Romania stated that the current situation is due to the technocratic government that is waiting until the next government comes on board. For brokers the current regulation is discriminatory according to Jason Curtis of Tradition, who thinks the Romanian power market could be much bigger than it is now and he promised to take action and urge ANRE to lift the ban.

ETCSEE is the ultimate platform for these kind of debates, of which many more were held along the extensive networking. We hope you enjoy reading this post-event report and look forward to continuing the discussion next year in Prague

Kind Regards,

Nel Jonk, Project Manager Energy Trading Portfolio
