BLESSED TRINITY PARISH CLEVELAND, OH
From Fr. Doug’s Desk
Sr. Janet Bednar wrote the following for our
bulletin this week:
It has been my privilege to be a member of
the Blessed Trinity staff during this first year
after the merger. I am grateful to have been
invited to participate in this great venture
known as Blessed Trinity. However, it is now
time for me to move on to new challenges. I
plan on staying on as a parishioner though and
I will see you in Church.
Sr. Jan
I know I speak for all the staff when I say
how grateful we are to Sr. Janet Bednar for
transitioning with us this past year. We know
that her presence has made the former
Annunciation parishioners feel welcome. We
are glad that she has chosen us as her faith
community for Sunday worship.
We are grateful to Jan’s commitment to
Peace and Justice. That commitment was not
just hers. She made it a part of our new parish.
Her fidelity to the witness for peace on Monday
afternoons, her knowledge of the Hunger
Network and food bank, her gift of insight into
the life of the church has been a gift to us all.
We will miss her witness and sense of humor at
pastoral staff meetings. As she finds a new
cause to devote herself to, we pray that the Holy
Spirit who came down upon Mary and the
disciples on that first Pentecost will reveal to
her where and to whom she is now called to
minister. I charge each of you today to make
that a part of your prayer as well.
Speaking of Pentecost, so often the image in
our minds of the first Pentecost is that of the
Holy Spirit descending upon the twelve
Apostles. But here is the list of people in
attendance from Acts of the Apostles (Acts
1:14) “They (the apostles) all joined together
constantly in prayer, along with the women and
Mary, the mother of Jesus and with his
brothers”. So the gift of the Spirit was not given
solely to the leaders of the community. The gift
of the Spirit was given to the whole community.
Each received that special gift to impart the
grace of God to others. This has many practical
applications in our lives, many of which we
enunciated in the documents at the Second
Vatican Council. Liturgically, it means that lay
people can proclaim God’s word, distribute
communion, share in the ministry of the church.
It means parents can bless their children (and
their children’s bicycle, too!) It means that the
Spirit works in each of us, dignifying and
sanctifying each person’s role within the
church, ordained and non-ordained. That first
Pentecost opened up ministry to all the
baptized. History took away that privilege and
reserved it to priests and nuns until Vatican II.
The reading of the Bible, calling us back to our
roots, changed that. We are relearning about
what Jesus said and did. We are discovering
what He thought was a priority, not what we
were told was a priority. We are identifying the
signs of the times today in light of the life of
Christ, our faith and life in the Spirit. For
instance, we look at immigration through the
eyes of Jesus, Mary and Joseph who were
immigrants in a foreign land. We look at prison
ministry through the jailing of Jesus, who was a
prisoner deprived of his basic human rights. We
look at the death penalty through the death of
Jesus and see so many innocents wrongly and
immorally put to death. We look to Jesus the
pacifist, for whom non-violence was a way of
life. We ask the Spirit to help us find new ways
to be instruments of God’s grace.
Come Holy Spirit.
Fr. Doug will be on vacation this week!
