TRANSCRIPT
Our Three Temptations�
Cosmologists today tell us that the universe has no single
center. Its center is everywhere, every place, every planet,
every city, every species, and every person.�
But we already knew this.�
Faith tells us that what ultimately defines us and gives us our
identity and energy is the image and likeness of God in us.
We are God's blessed ones, masters of creation, special to
God and special within creation.�
And we knew this, long before religion told us. Deep down,
whether we admit it or not, we each nurse the secret of being
special. And this is not just ego or narcissism but a congenital
imprint inside our very souls. Imprinted in the core of our
being is the sense that we are not just accidental, anonymous
chips of dust, almost invisible on the evolutionary conveyer�
belt, destined to flicker for an instant and then disappear
forever. We know we are more. We literally feel
timelessness, eternity, and immortal meaning inside of
ourselves.�
In our daily lives that often causes more heartaches than it
solves. It is not easy to live out our blessed, special status
when, most of the time, everything around us belies the idea
that we are special. As much as we experience ourselves as
special, we also experience emptiness, anonymity, and dour
ordinariness. And so it can be easy, in the end, to believe that
we aren't special at all, but are precisely small, petty spirits,
haunted by over�inflated egos.�
Nuestras Tres Tentaciones�
Los cosmólogos de hoy nos dicen que el universo no tiene un
centro único. Su centro está en todas partes, cada lugar, cada
planeta, cada ciudad, cada especie y cada persona.�
Pero nosotros ya sabíamos esto.�
La fe nos dice que lo que finalmente nos define y nos da nuestra
identidad y energía es la imagen y semejanza de Dios en nosotros.
Somos los benditos de Dios, maestros de la creación, especiales
para Dios y especiales dentro de la creación.�
Y sabíamos esto, mucho antes de que la religión nos lo dijera. En
el fondo, lo admitamos o no, cada uno cuida el secreto de ser
especial. Y esto no es solo ego o narcisismo, sino una huella
congénita dentro de nuestras almas. Impreso en el fondo de
nuestro ser está el sentido de que no somos solo personas
accidentales, fragmentos anónimos de polvo, casi invisibles en la
línea de producción evolutiva, destinados a parpadear por un
instante y luego desaparecer para siempre. Sabemos que somos
más. Literalmente sentimos la eternidad y el significado inmortal
dentro de nosotros mismos.�
En nuestra vida diaria, eso frecuentemente causa más angustias de
las que resuelve. No es fácil vivir nuestro bendecido y especial
estado, la mayoría de las veces, todo lo que nos rodea oculta la
idea de que somos especiales. Por mucho que nos consideremos
especiales, también experimentamos el vacío, el anonimato y lo
ordinario. Y, por lo tanto, puede ser fácil, al final, creer que no
somos especiales en absoluto, sino que somos precisamente
pequeños espíritus mezquinos, perseguidos por egos
engrandecidos.�

Pero, si bien los egos engrandecidos causan su parte de angustias,
sigue siendo una tentación poco saludable creer que no somos
bendecidos simplemente porque la vida nos encuentra a uno entre
seis billones de personas, luchando y aparentemente no especial en
ninguna manera. La fe cuenta la verdadera historia: todos somos
hechos a imagen y semejanza de Dios, bendecidos, y nuestro
secreto privado de que somos especiales es, de hecho, uns verdad
profunda.�
Sin embargo, eso no siempre es fácil de creer. La vida y las
circunstancias frecuentemente nos cansan en formas que nos hacen
creer que es lo contrario. Le pasó a Jesús.�
Él también fue tentado, y había un preludio particular a su
vulnerabilidad:�
Durante su bautismo, él escucho a su Padre decir: "¡Eres mi Hijo
Amado, en quien me complazco!" Esas palabras luego formaron y
definieron su autoconciencia. Sabiendo que fue bendecido, Jesús
pudo mirar al mundo y decir: "Felices los pobres ... y mansos ... y
perseguidos".�
Pero a lo largo de su vida, Jesús luchó para creer eso siempre. Por
ejemplo, inmediatamente después de su bautismo, se nos dice que
el espíritu lo condujo al desierto donde ayunó durante cuarenta
días y cuarenta noches, y luego "tuvo hambre". Obviamente, lo
que las escrituras están describiendo aquí no es simplemente
hambre física. Jesús estaba vacío en maneras que lo hacían
vulnerable a creer que no era el hijo bendito de Dios. Estas fueron
sus tres tentaciones:�
Primero, el diablo lo tentó de esta forma: "Si eres el Hijo de Dios,
ordena que estas piedras se conviertan en pan". La burla del diablo
era esta: "Si crees que eres la criatura especialmente bendecida de
Dios, ¿por qué tu vida está tan vacía?" La respuesta de Jesús: "¡El
hombre no vive solamente de pan!" Se podría decir: "¡Puedo estar
vacío y seguir siendo el bendecido de Dios! ¡Ser bendecido y
especial no depende de cuán llena o vacía esté mi vida en un
momento dado!”�
La segunda tentación tiene que ver con la gloria humana y su
ausencia. El diablo le muestra a Jesús todos los reinos del mundo y
le dice: "¡Te daré todo esto si te arrodillas y me adoras!" La burla
es: "Si eres el bendito de Dios, ¿cómo es que no eres nadie grande
e importante? No eres famoso, eres desconocido, anónimo. Y la
respuesta de Jesús podría estar escrita de esta manera: “Puedo ser
alguien desconocido y aún ser el bendito de Dios. ¡La bendición
no depende de la fama�de ser una celebridad o figura publica!”�
La tercera tentación sigue las mismas líneas. El diablo lleva a
Jesús a la cima del templo y lo reta a tirarse para hacer que Dios lo
agarre ya que, en fe, se promete que Dios no permitirá que su
bendecido "tropiece en piedra alguna". Jesús responde, “No
tentaras al Señor tu Dios”. Las tentaciones y cómo deberíamos
resistirlas están contenidas en su respuesta. Lo que Jesús dice
cuando el diablo lo reta a tirarse de la cima del templo para
demostrar su especialidad es esto: "¡Bajaré las escaleras, como
todos los demás!" Nuestra bendición no se basa en tener un
ascensor VIP o en tener privilegios especiales que nos diferencien
de los demás. Somos los benditos de Dios, aun cuando nos
encontramos en los autobuses de la ciudad.�
Y es bueno recordar, que somos hijos e hijas especiales y
bendecidos de Dios, aun cuando nuestras vidas parecen estar
vacías, anónimas y faltas de privilegios especiales porque así no
pondremos a Dios ni a nuestros corazones inquietos a la prueba,
exigiendo más de lo que la vida ordinaria nos puede darnos.�

But, while over�inflated egos do cause their share of
heartaches, it is a still an unhealthy temptation to believe that
we are not blessed simply because life finds us one�among�
six�billion�others, struggling, and seemingly not special in
any way. Faith tells the true story: we are, all of us, made in
God's image and likeness, blessed, and our private secret that
we are special is in fact the deepest truth.�
However that isn't always easy to believe. Life and
circumstance often tire us in ways that tempt us to believe its
opposite. It happened to Jesus.�
He too was tempted, and there was a particular prelude to his
vulnerability:�
During his baptism, he had heard his Father say: “You are my
blessed son, in whom I take delight!” Those words then
formed and defined his self�consciousness. Knowing that he
was blessed, Jesus could then look out at the world and say:
“Blessed are you when you are poor ... and meek ... and
persecuted.”�
But throughout his life Jesus struggled to always believe that.
For instance, immediately after his baptism, we are told, the
spirit drove him into the desert where he fasted for forty days
and forty nights�and then “he was hungry.” Obviously what
scripture is describing here is not simply physical hunger.
Jesus was empty in ways that made him vulnerable to believe
that he was not God's blessed child. These were his three
temptations:�
First, the devil tempted him to this effect: “If you are God's
specially blessed one, turn these stones into bread.” In
essence, the devil's taunt was this: “If you believe that you are
God’s specially blessed creature, why is your life so empty?”
Jesus’ reply, “One doesn't live on bread alone!” might be
rendered: “I can be empty and still be God’s blessed one!
Being blessed and special is not dependent upon how full or
empty my life is at a given moment!”�
The� second� temptation has to do with human glory and its
absence. The devil shows Jesus all the kingdoms of the world
and says: “All of these will be yours if you worship me!” The
taunt is: “If you're God's blessed one, how come you're a big,
fat nobody? Not famous, not known, anonymous.” And
Jesus’ reply might be worded this way: “I can be a big
nobody and still be God's blessed one. Blessedness doesn't
depend upon fame, on being a household name!”�
The third temptation follows the same lines. The devil takes
Jesus to the top of the temple and challenges him to throw
himself down to make God catch him since, in faith, it is
promised that God won't let his blessed one “dash his foot
against a stone.” Jesus responds that we shouldn’t put God to
the test. The temptation and how we should resist it are both
contained in his reply. In essence, what Jesus says when the
devil challenges him to throw himself off the top of the
temple to prove his specialness is this: “I'll take the stairs
down, just like everyone else!” Our blessedness is not
predicated on having a VIP elevator, or on having any special
privileges that set us apart from others. We are God's blessed
ones, even when we find ourselves riding the city buses.�
And it is good to remember, namely, that we are God's
special, blessed sons and daughters, even when our lives
seem empty, anonymous, and devoid of any special privileges
because then we won't forever be putting God and our restless
hearts to the test, demanding more than ordinary life can give

English Baptism Preparation Sessions, for both Parents and
Godparents are normally held on the Second Sunday of each
month Please call the parish office in order to register for the
session. The session will include a discussion of the sacrament
of Baptism, the completion of the necessary forms, a review of
the guidelines for potential Godparents and the date for the
Baptism will be chosen.�

Our Parish Lenten Penance Service will be held on
Wednesday, March 25, at 7:00 PM. We are all invited to
take this opportunity to prepare for the celebration of the
Resurrection of Our Lord, Jesus Christ.�

Norms for Fasting and Abstinence�
Ash Wednesday, and Good Friday, April 10, 2020, are days
of fasting and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of
abstinence.�
�
Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older,
who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day
one full meal is allowed. Two other�
meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken
according to each one’s needs, but together they should not
equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not
permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed.�
�
Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On
days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health
or ability to work would be seriously�
affected, Church law does not oblige. When in doubt
concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be
consulted.�
�
Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional
disciplines of Lent. The faithful and Catechumens should
undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and
of preparation for Initiation into the Church or the renewal of
Baptismal Promises at Easter.�

de abstinencia y de ayuno. También deben abstenerse los

hayan cumplido los 59 años de edad, deben ayunar. Se permite
comer una vez durante el día de ayuno, aunque también pueden
comer dos veces para mantener la energía, según�
la necesidad de cada individuo. Sin embargo, estas dos comidas
no deben igualar a la cantidad de una comida completa. No se
puede comer entre comidas, pero está permitido tomar líquido,

pancakes y miel, aceite, harina, maseca y productos lácteos.�

Stuff A Truck: las donaciones de alimento del fin de semana del
mes para la campaña fueron 620 libras. Se donaron artículos
adicionales antes de la distribución del sábado.�

We purchased a new rolling rack to help with the distribution of choice items.�
Unfortunately Pro Data Research will no longer be able to provide us with
boxes to pack food. Anyone who may know of a source for boxes please let
us know. Boxes that are approximately 8 1/2”h x11”w x 18”d work well for
our storage racks. We use about 250 boxes a month for distribution.�

March 1, 2020 Lent is a time for reflection, repentance and restoration.
Jesus offers forgiveness to us through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. As
Catholics, we are called to experience Reconciliation at least once a year.
We encourage you to begin your Lenten journey with a clean heart and an
open mind. �
Examination of Conscience BY FATHER LARRY RICE �
In the Catholic spiritual tradition, we have a method of self�evaluation that
might be a valuable spiritual exercise at this time of year. It’s called an
“examination of conscience.” Although there are lots of different forms of
this exercise, all of them are comprised of a structured list of questions to
ask yourself, designed to help you determine where you might have gone
wrong, what your spiritual weaknesses are, and even what you should have
done that maybe you neglected to do. �
If you’ve never done a formal examination of conscience, this might seem
like a big downer. But this is a list that’s just between you and God. There’s
no need to sugarcoat it. If, after going through the exercise, you’ve
discovered some serious issues needing reconciliation and forgiveness, then
you’re well prepared for the Sacrament of Reconciliation or confession. At a
minimum, you’ll be able to base your Lenten sacrifice on something
concrete.�
�
A Brief Examination of Conscience Based on the Ten Commandments �
I am the Lord your God: you shall not have strange gods before me. Have I
treated people, events, or things as more important than God? �
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. Have my words,
actively or passively, put down God, the Church, or people? �
Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day. Do I go to Mass every Sunday (or
Saturday Vigil) and on Holy Days of Obligation? Do I avoid, when
possible, work that impedes worship to God, joy for the Lord’s Day, and
proper relaxation of mind and body? Do I look for ways to spend time with
family or in service on Sunday? �
Honor your father and your mother. Do I show my parents due respect? Do
I seek to maintain good communication with my parents where possible?
Do I criticize them for lacking skills I think they should have? �
You shall not kill. Have I harmed another through physical, verbal, or
emotional means, including gossip or manipulation of any kind? �
You shall not commit adultery. Have I respected the physical and sexual
dignity of others and of myself? �
You shall not steal. Have I taken or wasted time or resources that belonged
to another? �
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. Have I gossiped,
told lies, or embellished stories at the expense of another? �
You shall not covet your neighbor’s spouse. Have I honored my spouse with
my full affection and exclusive love? �
You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods. Am I content with my own
means and needs, or do I compare myself to others unnecessarily? �
�
Act of Contrition My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In
choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you
whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do
penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior
Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy. �

Examen de Conciencia por el Padre Larry Rice�

método de autoevaluación que podría ser un valioso

un "examen de conciencia". Aunque hay muchas

Garden of the Incarnation News�
Winter is still here but before you know
it spring will catch up with us.�
Last year was a productive year with a
lot of nice produce produced for the
little portion food pantry. This year
begins our 6
th
year.�
The bigger section of the garden will
need a rest to regain nutrients
and therefore will not be
planted in, so that leaves us
with Phase A consisting of 8
raised beds and a small herb
bed.�
On the weekend of March
7
th
we will be at the Ministry Fair here at church. We will have
pictures and information. Please stop by and say hi and if you
are interested in helping out.�
