The Perils of Safety
I was raised to be cautious, physically and morally: “Be
careful! Don’t make a mistake! Be safe! Don’t do anything for
which you’ll be sorry!” I inhaled those words, literally,
through my years of childhood, my years of seminary training,
and through most of my years in the priesthood.
In fact they were the last words that my father, one of the truly
moral men I have known, spoke to me. He was dying of
cancer in a hospital and as my brother and I left for the night,
not knowing that he would die before morning, he cautioned
us: “Be careful!” He was referring to our driving on icy winter
roads. But this caution marked his character, his moral
sensitivity, and his healthy solicitude for us, his children, and
it was meant morally: “Be careful! Be safe!” This was his
habitual warning.
Those words are now part of my genetic make-up. You inherit
more than simple biology from your father, especially if you
are lucky enough to have one who was uncompromisingly
moral. And that caution has served me well. I’m grateful for it.
I’ve made it through more than half a century essentially
intact, physically and morally. No small gift.
But that caution sometimes brings with it other things for
which I am less grateful. One can be intact, but so cautious
and timid that fear rather than love becomes the compass for
one’s life. The occupational hazard in always being
scrupulously safe is that one can easily end up like the older
brother of the prodigal son, that is, rigidly faithful in all things,
but judgmental, jealous, and bitter of heart, dogmatically and
morally uncompromising, while envying the amoral and being
too paralyzed internally to truly dance.
Los peligros de la Seguridad
Me educaron para ser cauteloso, física y moralmente: “¡Ten
cuidado! ¡No cometas un disparate! ¡Cuídate! ¡No hagas nada de
lo que tengas que arrepentirte!” Yo aspiré esas palabras,
literalmente, en mis años de infancia, en mis años de formación
en el seminario y en casi todos los años de mi vida sacerdotal.
De hecho ésas fueron las últimas palabras que me dirigió mi
padre, uno de los hombres verdaderamente morales que he
conocido. Estaba agonizando de cáncer en un hospital y, cuando
mi hermano y yo le dejamos por la noche, sin imaginarnos que
moriría antes de la madrugada, nos advirtió: “¡Tened cuidado!”
Él se refería en ese momento a nuestro conducir hacia casa por
carreteras heladas en invierno. Pero esta advertencia cautelosa
marcaba su carácter, su sensibilidad moral y su saludable
solicitud por nosotros, sus hijos; y tenía significado moral
también: “¡Cuidado! ¡Cuídate!” Ésta era su consejo normal.
Esas palabras forman parte ahora de mi carácter genético. Tú
heredas de tu padre más que la simple biología, especialmente si
eres muy afortunado de tener un padre que era severamente
moral. Esa cautela me ha servido mucho en la vida. Por ello
estoy muy agradecido. He podido vivir sano e intacto, física y
moralmente, más de la mitad de un siglo. No es pequeño don.
Pero esa estricta cautela a veces, lleva consigo, otras
consecuencias por las que estoy menos agradecido. Uno puede
estar sano e intacto, pero muy cauteloso y tímido, que el temor,
más que el amor, se convierte en la brújula de tu vida. El riesgo
laboral de estar siempre escrupulosamente seguro consiste en que
uno puede terminar fácilmente como el hermano mayor del hijo
pródigo, es decir, rígidamente fiel en todas las cosas, pero crítico,
celoso, amargado de corazón, dogmático y moralmente duro, y, a
la vez envidioso de lo inmoral y paralizado interiormente para
danzar de verdad.

A veces, una larga cautela practicada en nuestras acciones
contribuye a tener un corazón que es más cauteloso que
generoso, más envidioso que afirmativo y más crítico que
dispuesto al perdón. A veces, también, la cautela excesiva
conduce a tener un corazón que entiende el amor y el perdón
como algo que debe ser merecido, más que dado o recibido
gratuitamente. Con mucha frecuencia también, la excesiva
cautela da como resultado un corazón que siente un secreto
regocijo cuando las cosas les van mal a los que no viven como
nosotros. No siempre ocurre así, pero puede ocurrir fácilmente
y, hablando con franqueza y humildad, a mí también me ha
ocurrido algunas veces en mi propia vida.
El poeta alemán, Goethe, escribió una vez: "Los peligros de la
vida son muchos, y la seguridad es uno de esos peligros". Para
algunas personas, tal vez la advertencia inversa podría ser más
apropiada. Pero para aquellos de nosotros que fuimos criados
para ser personas buenas y religiosas, hay una verdad
inquietante en las palabras de Goethe (Goethe).
¿Estamos acaso viviendo con excesiva seguridad? ¿Tenemos
acaso el valor de mirar con auténtica honestidad a nuestras
inhibiciones, celos, envidia, y a nuestros berrinches religioso?
¿Sentimos que nuestras vidas estan impulsadas más por el temor
que por el amor? ¿Podemos participar gozosamente en la danza,
sin crítica y amargura? ¿Nos perciben otros como rígidos?
¿Cuándo fue la última vez que realmente pudimos perdonar a
alguien que nos hirió? ¿Se caracterizan realmente nuestras vidas
por el amor y la generosidad, o más bien por el temor y la
protección de uno mismo?
El peligro de vivir demasiado seguro es que, a veces, cuando
pensamos que estamos defendiendo la vida, estamos realmente
defendiendo la pobreza de nuestras propias vidas; a veces,
cuando pensamos que estamos defendiendo la virtud, estamos
defendiendo realmente nuestras inhibiciones y temores; y
cuando pensamos que estamos hablando en favor de la
saludable preocupación de Dios por el mundo, estamos -como
el hermano mayor del hijo pródigo del evangelio-, hablando
realmente de nuestra envidia camuflada y oculta.
El héroe protagonista de la película “Charriots of Fire” Eric
Liddell, joven de maravillosos principios morales, era corredor
olímpico, quien, por sensibilidad religiosa, rehusó participar en
una carrera olímpica programada en domingo, aun cuando era él
fuerte favorito para ganar la medalla de oro. Hubiera sido fácil
juzgar negativamente su acción como fruto de rigidez moral y
religiosa. En el caso de algún otro pudiera ser verdad. No lo era
en el caso de Eric Liddell. ¿Por qué? Porque no le impulsaba ni
el miedo ni la rigidez. Le impulsaba el amor. “Cuando corro”,
dijo sorprendentemente, “siento que agrado a Dios”.
A veces me formulo a mí mismo la misma pregunta con
referencia a mis inhibiciones morales y religiosas: ¿Acaso
agrada a Dios mi cautela? ¿Disfruta Dios con mis sacrificios?
¿Disfruta con mis ansiedades sobre los fallos morales del
mundo? ¿O está el Padre a mi lado –como hizo una vez con el
hermano mayor del hijo pródigo-, fuera de la celebración,
suplicándome que afloje un poco mi rigidez, que entre y me una
a la fiesta y al baile?
Estoy enormemente agradecido por la educación que recibí, a
pesar de la actitud de reserva congénita que dejó en mí. Es
bueno ser cauto. Es una forma responsable y bonita de vivir.
Pero cada vez me vuelvo más honesto acerca de sus peligros. La
mayor parte del tiempo permanezco bastante sano, pero algunas
veces siento que soy más tímido que generoso, más cuidadoso
de mí mismo que cariñoso con otros, más envidioso que
saludablemente solícito y amable. Algunas veces la cautela me
achica el corazón. La cautela y la seguridad son también

Sometimes a long, practiced caution in our actions makes for a
heart that is more cautious than generous, more envious than
affirming, and more judgmental than forgiving. Sometimes too
it makes for a heart that understands love and forgiveness as
things that must be merited rather than freely given and
received. Too often it results in a heart that is secretly gleeful
when things go wrong for those who aren’t living as we are.
That isn’t always the case, but it can easily be, and, speaking
frankly and humbly, it has sometimes been the case in my own
life.
The German poet, Goethe, once wrote: “The dangers of life are
many, and safety is one of those dangers.” For some people
perhaps the reverse warning might be more appropriate. But
for those of us who were raised to be good and religious
persons there is a disturbing truth in Goethe’s words (Goethe).
Are we living too safely? Do we have the courage to look at
our inhibitions, jealousies, and religiously-sanctioned angers
with real honesty? Are our lives driven more by fear than by
love? Can we enter the dance without judgment and bitterness?
Do others perceive us as rigid? When is the last time we could
truly forgive someone who hurt us? Are our lives really about
love and generosity rather than fear and self-protection?
The danger in living too safely is that sometimes when we
think we are defending life we are really defending the poverty
of our own lives, sometimes when we think we are defending
virtue we are really defending our inhibitions and fears, and
sometimes when we think we are speaking for God’s healthy
concern for the world we are really speaking of our own
hidden jealousy, like the older brother of the prodigal son.
The hero of the movie, Chariots of Fire, Eric Liddell, a
wonderfully moral young man, was an Olympic runner who,
because of religious sensibilities, refused to run an Olympic
race on Sunday, even though he was heavily favored to win the
gold medal. It would be easy to judge his action as stemming
from moral and religious rigidity. In somebody else’s case that
might be true. It wasn’t for Eric Liddell. Why? Because he
wasn’t driven by fear or rigidity. He was driven by love.
“When I run,” he famously said, “I feel God’s pleasure.”
Sometimes I ask myself that same question in relation to my
religious and moral inhibitions: Does God take pleasure in my
caution? Does God take pleasure in my sacrifices? Does God
take pleasure in my anxieties about the world’s moral failings?
Or is the Father standing with me, outside the celebration,
pleading with me, as he once pleaded with the older brother of
the prodigal son, to let up a little and come inside and join the
dance?
I am grateful for my upbringing, despite the congenital
reticence with which it has left me. It’s good to be careful. It’s
a responsible and loving way to live. But I am growing more
honest about its dangers. I am pretty intact much of the time,
but sometimes I’m more fearful than generous, more self-
protective than loving, more jealous than healthily solicitous.
Sometimes caution doesn’t leave me with a big heart.
Safety too has its dangers.

A Friendly Reminder for our Parish Community
Disability parking may be used only when the person to whom
the placard or plate was issued is in the vehicle. If that person is
not in the vehicle, the driver may not use the disability placard/
plate. If you do not have a placard or plate and need to drop
someone off, you may do so at the side walk of the church and
then go to the parking lot to find a parking space. It is unlawful
to park or leave standing any vehicle that does not carry a valid
disability placard or plate in a parking space for individuals
with disabilities. Vehicles are subject to be towed.

“unashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ” silent, prayerful
protest. We stand (or bring a chair) and pray quietly while
holding LIFE CHAIN signs.
Our church family is invited to be “salt and light” on the
sidewalks of S. Church St., Burlington near the Rich &
Thompson Funeral Home, Williams High School, and across
the street in front of Summer Winds – 1258 S. Church St. You
may pick up the signs at these locations. Please join and pray
that we can bring our country back to living the values of the

may need one for their personal use. It is not limited to
any specific group of persons.
The FaithAction ID Card program schedule here at
Blessed Sacrament Church for the next several months is as
follows:
Friday, September 20, 2019 - Doors open @ 9:00 AM
No one is admitted once the orientation session begins. So
please plan accordingly.
Requirements for the Faith ID Card:
1)1) Participation in the FaithAction ID Orientation;
2) Proof of Identification (original documents not copies:
i.e., national ID card, passport, school ID, expired
driver’s license, library card with photo, work permit
with photo, border cross card, birth certificate along
with a photo ID from this list, etc…)
3) Proof of current address within 2 months (i.e. phone or
electricity bill, lease agreement, bank statement, etc…)
The FaithAction ID Card will cost $10 (cash or check only)
and will include your photo, full name, and address, date of
birth, and expiration date, along with the FaithAction Logo.

The 4th Degree Knights of Columbus held a Food Drive in the
Philippines last year. The Knights of Columbus know the need
is great all over the world, so we did something about it. The
Knights all pitched in to help fund this Food Drive. We went
to some of the most depressed areas in the Philippines to pass
out food. The gratitude shown to us was priceless.
Stuff a Truck
"The Knights of Columbus would like to thank all of the
parishioners who contributed to our last Stuff a Truck effort
August 10/11. Together we provided over 1,100 pounds of
food for the Little Portions Food Pantry!
Our next Stuff the Truck (or trailer as the case may be) is
this weekend September 14/15, 2019. Please help us keep this
valuable program rolling!"
September is a busy month of community service and
activities for our K of C Council 3498. We' ll be playing
bingo with disabled Veterans at the VA Hospital, holding a
charity breakfast for Kopper Top Life Learning Center,
assisting at the Parish Campout, attending the Blessed
Sacrament School Open House, conducting a blood drive,
kicking off our "baby bottle campaign", praying a rosary
together along with Corporate Communion, and having fun
dining together twice in September. Interested in joining our
ranks? We'd love to have you! You must be a practicing
Catholic man 18 years or older. See a Knight after church
wearing a K of C badge. He'll direct you how to join!
