Rural SIG meeting 2021 – a trainee’s experience

The Rural Special Interest Group (SIG) conference was the event of the year on the Mackay Base Hospital Anaesthetic Department calendar.

The three-day event took place from 11-13 June at the idyllic Coral Sea Resort in Airlie Beach, and for the first time was held in association with the Mackay Anaesthetic Community (MAC).

As a first-year trainee in Mackay, I was excited to be able to attend a national conference that I had heard so many great things about.

Last year’s conference had to be cancelled due to the COVID lockdowns, and the uncertainty continued in the lead up to the 2021 event.

A snap lockdown in Melbourne only a week out from the conference prevented many of the Victorian delegates from attending in person.

Despite this, the event organisers were able to change the event format in a short time to include

virtual presentations and online Q & A sessions, making it an all-inclusive success.

Over the three days the conference was completely jam packed with academic workshops, insightful lectures as well as many networking and social activities in the heart of the Whitsundays, demonstrating the best that Airlie Beach has to offer.

There were more than a dozen high calibre speakers from across Australia who were able to draw on their clinical experience in anaesthesia and rural medicine to deliver thought-provoking lectures.

Many of the presentations had a strong clinical focus, which I felt I could apply to my everyday practice.

I really enjoyed the talk on “Designing better anaesthetic emergencies” by Associate Professor Stuart Marshall and “Top 10 tips for pain management” by Dr James Jarman from Perth.

Dr Andrew Cronin, who has spent time working with NASA, discussed aeromedical anaesthesia and answered everyone’s burning question… just how exactly do you intubate a patient in zero gravity?

The academic workshops were also a great feature of the conference and provided a fantastic hands-on and interactive learning experience.

Delegates had the opportunity to learn thromboelastometry interpretation, perform ultrasound guided nerve blocks, or participate in Can’t Intubate Can’t Oxygenate (CICO) emergency scenarios.

A great conference would not be complete without a stella line up of social events and the 2021 Rural SIG conference was no exception.

It kicked off on Friday evening with a cocktail reception on the jetty overlooking the stunning Coral Sea Marina.

The Saturday afternoon activities then demonstrated just how great winter is in tropical North Queensland.

Delegates were able to face off in a beach volleyball tournament or set sail on a sunset cruise through the Whitsunday Islands.

Early morning yoga and photography workshops were the other optional activities attended by delegates and their families. A gala dinner topped it all off in a spectacular fashion.

The final session of the conference was a massive success, and as a trainee I relished the opportunity to attend a face-to-face event in the current COVID pandemic.

The academic program was outstanding and the social activities were even better.

Preparations are underway for the next year’s annual Mackay Anaesthesia Conference in June 2022 at Airlie Beach.

I would highly recommend this conference to any junior doctor,

whether they are a current trainee or considering training in anaesthesia.

I would be keen to attend the Rural SIG conference again next year and eagerly waiting for the announcement of the dates and location.

Dr Timothy Gilmour, Anaesthesia Registrar, Mackay

Base Hospital

Dr Gilmour would like to acknowledge the meeting convenor, Dr Suresh Singaravelu and conference coordinator, Kirsty O’Connor, ANZCA for their support in the preparation of this article.

Published in the ANZCA Bulletin.

Perioperative Nurses Week (November 14 - 20) is an opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding contribution made by our perioperative nurses.

They perform preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care primarily in the operating theatre and are much valued contributors to our health service.

Clinical nurse (education) Wendy Doevendans has worked in Mackay Base Hospital’s theatre for over a decade and is passionate about perioperative patient care.

“We meet our patients in often very vulnerable and difficult times, and our role is to provide care and establish an early rapport to make sure they feel comfortable,” she said.

“We’re like a big family here and I have enjoyed working in this area of nursing since I started 11 years ago.”

Mackay Base Hospital theatre held their annual Perioperative Nurses Week breakfast before heading out to day shift.

Thank you for your dedication to surgical services and always providing exceptional patient care.

60 seconds with…. Lizl De Kock

What is your role?

I am the Chief Radiographer for BreastScreen Mackay, and I have worked at BreastScreen since November 2002, so nearly 19 years.

What does a typical day look like in your role?

A typical day is mainly doing mammograms, requesting and sending copies from private practices in Mackay and BreastScreen services interstate. Managing radiographer on mobile, also templates and mobile schedule. At assessment clinics I would also do ultrasounds. Doing Quality Assurance (QA) on all equipment, daily, monthly etc. This QA is mainly done by Maxie the other radiographer.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Meeting different ladies and knowing that we provide a service which can detect breast cancer at an early stage.

Is there a staff member or team you would like to give a shout out to for exhibiting our organisational values of collaboration, trust, respect and teamwork

The staff member I would give a shout out to would be BreastScreen Clinical Nurse Louise Jackson. She exhibits collaboration by always being interested in all aspects of the

screening pathway and sharing what she knows. She can be trusted with information. She respects everyone for the part they play at the service and is a very good team player also willing to help.

What are you currently bingeing?

I don’t binge on Netflix or Stan I prefer reading a good book.

Chief Radiographer BreastScreen Mackay

Karen Nitz and Denis Clarke from Mackay District Home Care Service attended the 2021 Senior’s Expo this week where they provided information to older persons of our community on services that may assist and be available to them.

It was also an opportunity for the team to meet other providers in the community and gain insight into their services.

Mackay District Home Care Service assists approximately 1000 clients in the Mackay and Sarina district to live at home independently. Services include

domestic assistance, shopping, personal care, yard maintenance and home care packages.

The Senior’s Expo is coordinated by Mackay Regional Council

each year to help link seniors, carers, family and friends to the various services, businesses and community groups available in the Mackay region.
