Commodityinflation biteshard...The prices of its leading soapbrands such asDove, Lux, andLifebuoyhavegoneupby 16 to27per cent since last year.

According to Dabur IndiaCEOMohit Malhotra, the firmeffected a 3per cent calibratedhike during the quarter owingto what he called "unprece-dented" inflation.

“This kind of inflationacross the board has not beenwitnessedinthepast7-8years,”saidMalhotra.“Theoverall risein costs is about 5 per cent andtomitigate that, we need to doa 10 per cent price hike, whichis not feasible. So we imple-mented a cost saving exercisewith a target to save ~100 crorein FY22. But that will not beenough to mitigate the costescalation.”

Whilemoreexpensivefossilfuels led to a 50 per centincrease in the cost of packag-ing, the higher cost of edibleoils and herbs are now threat-ening Dabur’s margins. Thismargin pressure, Malhotraanticipates, will continue tilltheDecember quarter.

Amul has announced a ~2per litrehike inpackagedmilk.Analystsexpect themovetobefollowed by other producersand consequently, the price ofice cream, cold coffee andskimmed milk etc will go uptoo. Sources saidNestle Indiahasalready increasedprices incertaincategoriesandreducedthe pack sizes of its top sellingMaggi noodle from 70 to 60grams tomaintain itsmargins.

Formanufacturersofwhitegoods and electronics, thehighercostof televisionpanels,compressors,motorsandplas-ticsarehurting.TVpriceshaveso far been raised by up to 15per centaspanelprices surgedby 30 to 100 per cent, depend-ingon their size.

This was the secondmajor acquisition by the uni-corn inaspanofa fewmonths.API Holdings had announcedthe acquisition of online phar-macy player Medlife in May, adeal valued over $200million.

The company already hasbacking from large investorssuch as Temasek Holdings,TPGGrowth, Prosus Ventures,B Capital, Think Investments,Kotak Realty Fund, and OriosVenture Partners. Vikatan has been makinghit shows like ThirumathiSelvam and Kolangal for SunTV for 22 years. “On Sun weweredoingourownmarketingandgettingadrevenues. Itwasgetting more and more chal-lenging. So we decided torelook the model,” saysSrinivasan. Vikatan turned itssightsondigitalwith,VallamaiTharayo, a daily show onYouTube late in 2020. It wassoonpickedupanddubbedbyETV (Telugu) and Flowers TV(Malayalam). MeanwhileDisney+ Hotstar, whichVikatan had approached fouryears ago, commissionedNovember Story.

That is the second pointabout the growth of languageOTT: Its trajectory is similar tobroadcast television in the1990s.The initialmovetoofferregional content came fromlocal entrepreneurs likeKalanithi Maran who set upSun TV in 1993 or Ramoji RaowhostartedEenaduTVin1995.

It is later that Zee, Star orViacom18came into thegame.Many grew by acquiring whatthefirstroundofentrepreneurshad built. For instance, Staracquired Asianet in 2008 andMaa in 2015 to build its non-Hindi business.

Similarly, in OTT, most ofthe large broadcasters whohave their own brands (Zee5from Zee or Voot fromViacom18) were busy consoli-dating the Hindi offering. Butthe launch of so many stand-alone OTTs has pushed manytoup their game.

This brings in the thirdpoint about language OTTs. Ittook all of three weeks to getKoode up and running, saysSubhashish Gupta, managingdirector of sales, India, forBrightcove, a streaming solu-tions firm.Anend-to-endplat-form could take 3-4 months.The costs could range from$50,000 to $1million, depend-ing on ahost of variables – is ita subscription-based or freeservice et al. “The figure riseswith bandwidth, storage andtranscoding,” saysGupta.

A television channel –whether from an existingbroadcaster or a new one --could take anywhere from6 to18 months. It needs transpon-dersonasatellite,multipleper-missions andacceptance fromcable and DTH operators. AnOTT needs none of that, mak-ingforalmostnoentrybarriers.This also partially explains therush tomeet thedemand.

“Given the number of lan-guagesIndiahas, theoptionforone language OTT alwaysexists. The questions arearound long-term economicsand the evolution of the localcontent ecosystem to supportthat growth,” thinks VijaySubramaniam, director andhead content, Amazon PrimeVideo, which offers eightIndian languages and is anaggressive bidder for languagecontent and films. He is right.Manyof the largebroadcastershavetroublesourcingshowsin,say, Odia or Punjabi becausethereisn’tarobustenoughpro-ductionecosystemlikethere isfor, say, Tamil or Hindi. AsOTTs rush in, the squeeze willonly get tighter till the creativeecosystemdevelops.

The audience numbers formost languageOTTs are smallas of now; none figures in anytop 10 list. That is a matter oftime, say analysts. India hasover 800 channels. However,Broadcast Audience ResearchCouncil data shows that SunTV, a Tamil entertainmentchannel, has been the mostwatched in India for severalyears now. This is across lan-guages, genres and states.

That is the power of Indianlanguages.

Vishal Mahadevia, manag-ing director and head of theIndia business at WarburgPincus, said his company wasexcited to partner AggarwalandOla. “They are the leadingmobility platform and one ofbiggestconsumerinternetplat-forms in India with a robustand fast growing business. Welook forward to collaboratingwith Bhavish and the team inthenextphaseofOla’sgrowth,”he said.

This is thefirst timethatOlahas raised a major fundinground since its Series J financ-ing in 2019, according to dataanalytics firmTracxn.

Ola had raised about $3.8billion, according to the dataplatformCrunchbase.

The firm did not reveal itsvaluationafterthenewfundinground. Itwasvaluedat$6.5bil-lion when it raised fundingfrom South Korean vehiclemakerHyundai in 2019.

However, in May last year,Ola laidoff 1,400employees,orover 33 per cent of its work-force, due to the pandemic. Itsaw a massive slump duringthe lockdown.

In March this year, US-based investment firmVanguardGroup,aninvestor inOla, hadmarked down its val-uation further after slashing itby nearly half at the onset ofthe pandemic, according to areport byTheCapitalQuest.

The Capital Quest reporthad said Ola, operated by ANITechnologies, was one of theworst-hit technology start-upsin India as many companiesswitchedtoawork-from-homeroutine and physical distanc-ing norms curbed demand fortravel.

It said the company’s rev-enue plunged around 95 percentafterIndiaimposedalock-down in late March 2020,Aggarwal had said then.

Thereportclaimedthatthishad likely prompted a fundmanaged by Vanguard Groupto slash Ola’s valuation by 45per cent in dollar termsbetween December 31, 2019andJune30,2020.Olawasval-ued at over $6 billion in 2019.Thiscamedowntoaround$3.3billion as Vanguard markeddown the value of its holding,according to the report.

“Travel and transport isamong the hardest hit sectorsdue to the coronavirus pan-demic and has negativelyimpacted the valuation of thecompanies in this area,” saidArunNatarajan, founderofpri-vateequityandventurecapitaldeal tracker VentureIntelligence. “But it is reallyremarkable for the company(Ola) to raise money in such asituation and an investor likeWarburgPincusissteppingin.”

For instance, Gurugram-based Shuttl is reportedly saidtobewindingupitsoperationsdue to the impactof theCovid-19andis exploringmergerandacquisitionopportunities.

However Ola’s ride-hailingbusiness is recoveringafter thecoronavirus pandemic’s hurtand demand for its food busi-ness and financial servicesimproves.Ola isalsosettingupaRs2,400-croreelectricvehiclefacilityexpectedtobecometheworld’s largesttwo-wheelerfac-tory.
