Today’s reading offers significant message:

In the gospels we read how Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem not as a proud warrior, but in humbleness. He “humble himself, accepting death, even death on a cross” for our sake, and “God greatly exalted him...and his name” (Philippians 2). Palm Sunday marks the beginning of our participation in the Passion of the Lord.

La lectura de hoy nos presenta una idea importante:

En los evangelios leemos como Jesús entro a la ciudad de Jerusalén, no como guerrero pero en humildad. El “se humillo, aceptando la muerte, y hasta muerte en cruz” por nosotros, y “Dios lo exalto y su nombre grandemente” (Filipenses 2). El Domingo de Ramos marca el comienzo de nuestra participación en la Pasión del Señor.

Brief commentary

Jesus proceeded on his journey up to Jerusalem. As he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples. He said, “Go into the village opposite you, and as you enter it you will find a colt tethered on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here. And if anyone should ask you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you will answer, ‘The Master has need of it.’” So those who had been sent went off and found everything just as he had told them. And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying this colt?” They answered, “The Master has need of it.” So they brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks over the colt, and helped Jesus to mount. As he rode along, the people were spreading their cloaks on the road; and now as he was approaching the slope of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of his disciples began to praise God aloud with joy for all the mighty deeds they had seen. They proclaimed: “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He said in reply, “I tell you, if they keep silent, the stones will cry out!”

Today, Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (also known as Passion Sunday and as Hosanna Sunday in the Eastern Rite churches), Christians everywhere commemorate Jesus' triumphal entrance in to the city of Jerusalem on the week in which he suffered. As we heard in today’s gospel, which was read from the entrance of the Church, people welcomed Jesus with joy into the holy city waiving palm and olive branches while praising him has the long awaited king-messiah. In and through Holy Week (The Great Week) Christians participate in the suffering, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Through our liturgies, services, devotions and prayers we unite ourselves to Jesus Christ and in doing so we receive the graces and fruits of his redeeming love. We accompany him in his suffering and are united in his victory over death.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús echó a andar delante, subien do hacia Jerusalén. Al acercarse a Befaré y Betania , junto al monte llamado de los Olivos, mandó a dos discípulos, diciéndoles: “Id a la aldea de enfrente; al entrar, encontraréis un borrico atado, que nadie ha montado todavía. Desatadlo y traedlo. Y si alguien os pregunta: “¿Por qué lo desatáis?”, contestadle: El Señor lo necesita”. Ellos fueron y lo encontraron como les había dicho. Mientras desataban el borrico, los dueños les preguntaron: “¿Por qué desatáis el borrico?” Ellos contestaron: “El Señor lo necesita.” Se lo llevaron a Jesús, lo aparejaron con sus mantos y le ayudaron a montar. Según iba avanzando, la gente alfombraba el camino con los mantos. Y, cuando se acercaba ya la bajada del monte de los Olivos, la masa de los discípulos, entusiasmados, se pusieron a alabar a Dios a gritos, por todos los milagros que habían visto, diciendo: “¡Bendito el que viene como rey, en nombre del Señor! Paz en el cielo y gloria en lo alto.”

Hoy, domingo de Ramos de la Pasión del Señor (también conocido como el Domingo de la Pasión y como el Domingo del Hosanna en los Ritos Orientales de la Iglesia), cristianos mundialmente conmemoraran la entrada triunfal de Jesús a la ciudad de Jerusalén en la semana en que sufrió. Como escuchamos en el evangelio de hoy, que fue proclamado desde la entrada de la Iglesia, el pueblo recibió a Jesús a la ciudad santa con gozo con ramos de palmas y de olivos, alabándolo como su gran esperado rey-mesías. En y a través de Semana Santa (la Gran Semana) los cristianos participan del sufrimiento, muerte y resurrección de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. A través de nuestras liturgias, servicios, devociones y acciones nos unimos a Jesús y de esta manera recibimos las gracias y frutos de su amor redentor. Lo acompañamos en su sufrimiento y nos unimos en su victoria sobre la muerte. Estamos presente a él y el está presente para nosotros.

Domingo de Ramos de la Pasión del Señor

Questions on the Paschal Triduum

1. When does the Triduum begin and end? The Easter Triduum begins with the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, reaches its high point in the Easter Vigil, and closes with Evening Prayer on Easter Sunday.

2. May another Mass besides the Mass of the Lord’s Supper be celebrated on Holy Thursday? Ordinarily, no other Mass may be celebrated on Holy Thursday. However, by way of exception, the local Ordinary may permit another Mass in churches and oratories to be celebrated in the evening, and, in the case of genuine necessity, even in the morning. Such Masses are provided for those who in no way are able to participate in the evening Mass.

3. How are the Holy Oils, consecrated and blessed at the Chrism Mass, to be received in the parish? A reception of the oils may take place before the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. The oils, in suitable vessels, can be carried in procession by members of the assembly.

4. Is the Mandatum, the washing of feet at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, required? No. The Roman Missal only indicates, “After the Homily, where a pastoral reason suggests it [ubi ratio pastoralis id suadeat], the Washing of Feet follows.”

5. When should the Good Friday Celebration of the Lord’s Passion take place? Normally it should take place in the afternoon, at about 3:00 PM, to enable people to assemble more easily. However, pastoral discretion may indicate a time shortly after midday, or in the late evening, though never later than 9:00 PM. Depending on the size or nature of a parish or other community, the local Ordinary may permit the service to be repeated.

6. May a deacon officiate at the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion? Although the Celebration of the Lord's Passion appears to be a service of the Word with the distribution of Holy Communion, the Roman Missal does not permit a deacon to officiate at the celebration. Historically, even though the Eucharist is not celebrated on this day, the liturgy of Good Friday bears resemblance to a Mass. At one time it was called the “Mass of the Presanctified” (referring to the pre-consecrated hosts used at Communion, even when only the priest received Communion). This is also reflected in the prescribed vesture for the priest: stole and chasuble. The liturgy of Good Friday, as an integral part of the Triduum, is linked to the Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord’s Supper and the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. While there may be cases where a parish with multiple churches or chapels (e.g., mission churches or a cluster of parishes under one pastor) might rotate the liturgies among the various locations, it would not be appropriate for a community to celebrate only part of the Triduum.

7. May any of the readings at the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion be omitted? The Lectionary for Mass does not indicate that any readings may be omitted at the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion. All three readings (Isaiah, Hebrews, and the Passion according to John) are required. It should be noted, however, for Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, the Lectionary indicates that while all three readings provided should be used, there may be circumstances in which one or more of the readings at Mass could be omitted: “Given, however, the importance of the account of the Lord’s Passion, the priest, having in mind the character of each individual congregation, is authorized to choose only one of the two readings prescribed before the Gospel, or if necessary, he may read only the account of the Passion, even in the shorter form. This permission applies, however, only to Masses celebrated with a congregation.” Thus, the account of the Passion is never omitted.

8. Does the Church encourage any other liturgical celebrations on Good Friday? On this day the Office of Readings and Morning Prayer could appropriately be celebrated with the participation of the people in the churches. Note that Evening Prayer is only prayed by those who do not participate in the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion.
