From child soldier to published author, Esaie Toingar has faced every challenge and embraced every opportunity with faith, tenacity and dignity. Born in the Chad Republic, he completed college in Algeria after which escaped to Nigeria when war erupted and then migrated to Sioux City, Iowa as a refugee. He later also completed a degree at the University of North Iowa and established himself in Cedar Rapids where he currently resides. In addition to full time employment at Rockwell Collins, he is also the President of Wake Up For Your Rights, a nonprofit organization involved in local initiatives that help immigrants navigate their adopted homeland and promote cultural understanding with native Iowans as well as partners on international initiatives that provide education, clean water, and legal advice in Africa. Esaie has authored two books based on his experiences in and knowledge about Africa as well as one about the journey of his family to the blessings in their current life.

Being raised by a single mother taught Robbie Cabral about hard work and sacrifice. This work ethic has served him well since he moved to the United States from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. He originally moved in 2007 to Los Angeles, California with his rock band with dreams of success in the music business. He stayed in pursuit of a better life after the rest his band members returned home and took any job he could find to make ends meet. A tenacious pursuit of a brilliant idea resulted in the invention of the Benjilock, the world’s first traditional rechargeable padlock with fingerprint technology, his appearance on “Shark Tank” and a partnership with one of its stars, Kevin O’Leary. This has propelled his invention into a successful national business venture in less than a year. Benjilock has also received accolades and recognition through numeral awards and featured in over 190 media outlets across the world including DIY, HGTV and Henry Ford’s Innovation Nation on the CBS network.

Immigrant Spirit Award

Neil MacNaughton, PhD, RN, teaches, practices and lives the idea that everyone deserves the dignity of primary and preventative healthcare. From his time as a Peace Corps volunteer in Micronesia, to serving as a delegate to the American Pacific Nurse Leadership Council (APNLC), to his role today as professor and community activist on behalf of the Marshallese and other immigrant groups in Dubuque, Iowa, he consistently works to ensure access to healthcare for all. Beginning during his career in nursing in the Peace Corps where he was stationed in Micronesia in the 1980’s, to his current role as Assistant Department Head for Nursing at the University of Dubuque, Neil has been a champion for the well-being of vulnerable migrant populations. As one of the founding members of the Dubuque Marshallese Healthcare Initiative, he has been at the forefront of ensuring the Marshallese residents of Dubuque receive access to the healthcare services they need. In addition to his leadership in this important battle at the local and national level, Neil is also a critical cultural broker in harnessing the compassion and understanding of the Dubuque community to benefit the Marshallese community in all other aspects of their lives in Iowa.

In 2012, the Immigrant Champion Award was renamed to the Karen Evans Immigrant Champion Award after the late Karen Louise Evans. Mrs. Evans’ earnest and personal commitment to assist individual immigrants epitomizes the legacy between Iowans and first generation immigrants.

The Karen L. Evans Immigrant Champion Award honors a non-immigrant or organization dedicated to making a positive impact on the immigrant community. The individual demonstrates both a personal and professional commitment to and advocacy. The award may also be presented to an organization that leads efforts to facilitate the entrepreneurial efforts to immigrants and/or fosters an environment where the unique skills immigrants bring to the work place is valued and rewarded.

The Immigrant Spirit Award honors a first generation immigrant who has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to professional/business excellence and altruistic pursuits. The honoree’s accomplishments and contributions have broad and substantial positive impact on the immigrant and larger community.
