Legislator Mills Elected Chairman of Legislature for 2016

Majority Leader Lorigo to lead Caucus for third year The Erie County Legislature unanimously elected Leg-islator John Mills to his third year as Chairman. The ap-pointment was confirmed at the annual reorganizational meeting held Jan. 7 at the Legislative Chambers. “It is an honor to have the unanimous support of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle and I look forward to again serving as Chairman of this honorable body. In my first term we accomplished some great work, including two consecutive tax decreases. As always, our work is never done and we have to continue to serve the taxpayers of Erie County to the best of our ability,” said Chairman Mills. Unopposed in the 2015 election, Chairman Mills was re-elected to another two-year term and begins his 11th year in the Legislature. Chairman Mills previously served as Minority Leader before the Republican-aligned Caucus took control of the Legislature in January 2014. In its second term in the majority, the Republican-aligned Caucus, which includes Legislator Edward Rath (R-Amherst), Legislator Kevin Hardwick (R-Tonawanda), Legislator Ted Morton (R-Cheektowaga), Chairman Mills (R-Orchard Park) and Legislator Lynne Dixon (I-Ham-burg), elected Legislator Joseph Lorigo (C-West Seneca) to his third term as Majority Leader. “The Majority Caucus took some meaningful steps to-ward reform in its first term in control but we still have more to accomplish. While this Legislative majority has shown a willingness to work with the County Executive, I believe government works best with checks and balances. As a majority, we will continue to do both. While I am proud of the many accomplishments of the past two years, I plan to focus these next two years on the areas where we can still provide improvement to taxpayers,” said Majority Leader Lorigo. “Too often, government bodies push ‘flash in the plan’ proposals to make headlines, but I am much more interested in ensuring the long-term viability of this county.” Majority Leader Lorigo ran unopposed and was re-elect-ed in November to his third term. North Collins Elementary Chorus Carolers

Imagine....the first snow, Christmas carolers, homemade cards, hot cocoa, and cookies... that was the scene on Fri-day, December 18. About 22 elementary chorus members had a blast Christ-mas caroling in the village as the first snow came floating down. The singers, with the help of Mrs. Riethmiller, Mrs. Lisa Neifergold, and Mrs. Jill Neifergold, went door to door around the village singing "Deck The Halls," "Silent Night," and "We Wish You A Merry Christmas," while passing out handmade cards and candy canes. Most of our North Col-lins neighbors welcomed the singers to their doors, some sang along, some offered cookies, and some wished they had hot cocoa to warm them up. After a full performance at Save-A-Lot, members of Music Boosters warmed up the chilled children with hot cocoa and homemade cookies by Mrs. Gail Gawlak. This is the first time the chorus has done this and it was a successful event. It is something that they have already asked to do again next year. The students said being with friends was nice, singing was nice, and the cookies and cocoa were really nice, but the best part was, as one student said, "seeing how happy we made the people."

What a beautiful Decem-ber day was the third of De-cember, 2015. With just a chill in the air, no snow on the ground, and the sun’s rays peeking in and out through the clouds, it was a perfect day for the annual NC Elementary School Holiday Senior Citizen Luncheon cel-ebration. It is a special cel-ebration, joining generations of NC families and friends. Children-at-heart of all ages, from 4 and beyond, celebrat-ed together with smiles, hugs, laughter, and love. The joy of the holiday and commu-nity was portrayed on each and every face. As a lifelong member of this school com-munity, it was a year for me to reflect on past memories, watch new beginnings being made, and appreciate this day with all my heart. It’s amaz-ing how the day unfolded so smoothly, yet so many were involved in making the day so special, from Ms. Laing creat-ing guest lists and collecting reservations to the mainte-nance staff assembling the gymnasium to the creative staff and students decorating it. Just picture life-size stu-dent elves hanging from the walls, tables decorated for the holidays, poinsettia center-pieces donated by the town, and sparkling trees twinkling in the background. Each ta-ble setting was unique with a

NC Elementary School Holiday Senior Citizen Luncheon

special card handmade by the elementary students and the students who participate in the Town’s after school pro-gram. Topping off each place setting was a holiday mug filled with a special note, tea, or cocoa and a darling, deli-cious cookie made by a very generous resident and North Collins employee. While the senior citizens awaited their meals, music students played holiday songs for all to enjoy. The 6th grade greeters and servers began serving warm drinks and cheer wherever they went. The Seniors were thrilled to enjoy a delicious holiday meal served up by the NC Kitchen staff. They were accompanied by Sue Lietz and friends who came out of retirement for a day to give back to the community.

As the luncheon was begin-ning to come to a close, the Pre-K and Kindergarteners took front and center stage to sing holidays songs and make hearts smile. As they finished, the audience wel-comed a new addition to the holiday performance. Mrs. Zgoda-Martin’s first grade volunteered to participate in the retelling of the story, The Night Before Christmas. It was read in honor of a for-mer North Collins teacher, Grace Roberts, my mother, who once shared this same story many years ago. Each child was a character cut out in the story as the book un-folded, and our very own lively “Elf on the Shelf,” Mat-thew Warsaw, entertained and assisted with the turning of the pages. The storybook

closed with the grand finale of “Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.” The students were met with a loud round of applause and a room full of smiling faces. My heart beamed with pride and honor. To me, this was an educational experience of a lifetime, watching the youth of our community give back to all those who have helped make North Collins such a special place to live, to raise children and to grow old to-gether. Thank you to all, and know that we, North Collins Elementary, are always open to having our seniors read to our youth. It makes for a wonderful circle of life.
