Prayer of Confession

There are times, O God, when we are hesitant to say the words we most need to say. So hear us as we pray from the depth of our hearts, saying: Help us. Save us. Forgive us. Love us. Reveal to us, O God, the things that will make us whole. Amen.

Anthem Resignation (from Singer’s Glen) Alice Parker [recorded Dec. 2, 2020] (b. 1925) Sanctuary Choir Section Leaders

And let this feeble body fail, And let it faint or die, My soul shall quit this mournful vale, And soar to worlds on high: Shall join the disembodied saints, And find its long sought rest, (that only bliss for which it pants,) In the Redeemer’s breast.

In hope of that immortal crown, I now the cross sustain, And gladly wander up and down, And smile at toil and pain. I’ll suffer on my three-score years, Till my Deliv’rer come, And wipe away his servant’s tears, And take his exile home.

The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away, Blest be the name of the Lord.

We Give Thanks to God

Affirmation of Faith from A Declaration of Faith (1977) Rev. Brian S. Shivers

Jesus Christ is the living Word of God. The Word which was with God from the beginning was embodied in Jesus Christ. We hold that what God says to us and does for us centers in Jesus Christ our living Lord as he is remembered, known, and expected. In Christ God's Word of acceptance takes flesh: by grace through faith we are set right with God, adopted as children of God, not because of anything we have done, but because of what Christ has done. In Christ God's Word of demand is lived out: to love God and neighbor as he did is what God requires of us. Amen.

Invitation to Discipleship and Generosity

Offertory My Soul’s Been Anchored in the Lord Spiritual, arr. Florence Price (1887-1953)

In the Lord, in the Lord, My soul’s been anchored in the Lord. Before I’d stay in hell one day, I’d sing and pray myself away. I’m going to pray and never stop, Until I’ve reached the mountain top. In the Lord, in the Lord, My soul’s been anchored in the Lord; God knows my soul’s been anchored in the Lord!

Prayers of the People and the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
