Gaining fluency in nonver-bal communicat ion is an impor-

    tant step in mastering com-

muni cation skills. Whether youintend it or not, a great deal of

meaning is conveyed throughnon-verbal clues. In fact, even

before you start ta lking, your lis-

tener will receive some mes-sage through them. Once you

start talking, they convey yourintentions linked to the message

and how it should be under-

stood. Compared to wordsthese signs are more trustable

because they do not lie. Goodcommunication is the foundation

of successful relationships. It iskey to control the emotions inothers and influence their re-

sponses. The outcome of meet-ings, negotiations, conflict reso-

    lution and other such exercises

depended on the communica-tion skills of. speakers and

facilitators. So by improving non-verbal communication skills you

    improve your chances of suc-

cess and accelerate your pro-fessional growth.

Nonverbal communication ismuch beyond facial expres-

    sions and gestures. It consti-

tutes several elements like howfast or slow you talk, b ody pos-

ture, eye contact, gestures, fa-cial expressions, tone of voice,

intonation and pauses. Themeaning of most of the nonver-

    bal cues is universal. However

some differ according to coun-try and culture. To improve your

nonVerbal communication skills, you should understand the role

of each of these elements in the

communication process. Fromthe information, you can inter-

pret the message better. Sometips about them: Intonation:In-

tonation is rise and fall in the

voice to suit the message. Forexample, the voice falls at the

end if the sentence is a state-ment. It rises if it is a question.

Another function of it is to markan end to a part of information(which is represented by

comma in written communica-tion) and to emphasise a par-

    ticular idea. A speaker should

use intonation appropriately.Using it too many t imes or un-

necessar ily will confuse the lis-tener. The listener on ' the other

hand should pay attention to the

intonation of the speaker, tounderstand th e message prop-

erly. Tone of voice:Tone givesinformation about the attitude of

    the speaker towards the mes-

sage. For instance, anewsreader's tone is factual. A

radio jockey's tone is enthusi-astic. Some more tones of voice

are aggressive,'critical, monoto-nous, persuasive and nervous.

A speaker should be very con-

scious about his tone especiallywhen he is reacting to a stress-

ful situation. For example, thespeaker is in an aggressive

mood but does not want it to re-

flect in his speech. He will try tosound calm. In the attempt the

tone may become monotonousor indifferent, an undesirable

    outcome.

Body posture: The bearingor position of the body is call

body posture. It is different frombody gestures. This is another

clue to the attitude of the speakerto the message. For example, closed arms and legs suggest

disagreement. A speaker cansubtly alter the emotions and re-

    sponses in the listener through

his body posture and voice tone.A listener on the other hand, if

he "can decode them, can resistthe speaker's attempts to influ-

    ence him. By understanding the

attitude of the speaker, he canalter his responses to suit the

situation and get what he wants.Gestures: Interpretation of

body gestures is done along with

the words and facial expres-sions. Through gestures a

speaker expresses, emphasises or confirms his mes-

sage. The listener can inter-pret the intensity of the

    speaker's message, attitude

or intentions through them.Facial expressions: Facial

expressions including eyecontact primarily convey infor-

    mation about the speaker's

emotions. They keep chang-ing during the communication

and are constantly observedand interpreted by the listener.

    Also, some facial areas reveal

some emotions better than oth-ers. For example, eyes very

well express happiness, shock and sadness. Brows

and forehead reveal anger.Mouth communicates friend-liness and cooperation. Un-

derstanding the significanceof the different elements of

    nonverbal communication

helps in better understandingof the message. More impor-

tantly they give informationabout the attitude, intentions

    and emotions of the speaker.

By learning to interpret thenonverbal clues of the

speaker, you can build, ap-propriate responses. And by

    controlling your nonverbal

clues you can better influ-ence the other person.
