The Story of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

This is a fairly late feast, going back only to the 13th or 14th century. It was established widely throughout the Church to pray for unity. The present date of celebration was set in 1969, in order to follow the Annunciation of the Lord and precede the Nativity of Saint John the Bap-tist. Like most feasts of Mary, it is closely connected with Jesus and his saving work. The more visible actors in the visitation drama (see Luke 1:39-45) are Mary and Elizabeth. However, Jesus and John the Baptist steal the scene in a hidden way. Jesus makes John leap with joy—the joy of messianic salvation. Elizabeth, in turn, is filled with the Holy Spirit and addresses words of praise to Mary—words that echo down through the ages. It is helpful to recall that we do not have a journalist’s account of this meeting. Rather Luke, speaking for the Church, gives a prayerful poet’s rendition of the scene. Elizabeth’s praise of Mary as “the mother of my Lord” can be viewed as the earliest Church’s devotion to Mary. As with all authentic devotion to Mary, Elizabeth’s (the Church’s) words first praise God for what God has done to Mary. Only secondly does she praise Mary for trusting God’s words. Then comes the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55). Here, Mary herself—like the Church—traces all her greatness to God. From Franciscan Media - for more information go to www.franciscanmedia.org/visitation/

Memorial Day Prayer

Dear Lord, on this day, we remember those who have served us by protecting our freedoms. When we celebrate our long weekend with our friends and family, help us remember, that our freedom to speak of you, and our freedom to worship you, and our freedom to do that which we ought to do, have all been bought at the price and sacrifice of many lives. Your Son died for our eternal life in heaven. So too, your children died protecting us here on earth. Help us be mindful this weekend and always of the sacrifices made by those in uniform for all our freedoms. Amen.

DIOCESAN 50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION:

A special Mass for couples of the Diocese of Kalamazoo who are celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversaries in 2018 will be held on Sun-day, October 14, 2018, 3:00 pm at St. Au-gustine Cathedral in Kalamazoo. Couples celebrating their 50th Anniversary any time in 2018 are asked to contact their parish office so that their names can be submitted for a personal invitation from Bishop Brad-ley to participate in this celebration. Invita-tions will be mailed beginning August 20th.

POPE FRANCIS ON THE MASS

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning!

We had reached the readings. The dialogue between God and his people, developed in the Liturgy of the Word of the Mass, culminates in the proclamation of the Gospel. It precedes the

chanting of the Alleluia — or, during Lent, another acclamation — with which “the assembly of the faithful welcomes and greets the Lord who is about to speak to it in the Gospel”. As the

mysteries of Christ illuminate the entire biblical revelation, likewise, in the Liturgy of the Word,

the Gospel constitutes the light for understanding the meaning of the biblical texts which precede it, both of the Old and the New Testaments. Indeed, “Christ himself is the center and fullness of the whole of Scripture”. Jesus Christ is

always at the center, always. Therefore, the liturgy itself distinguishes the Gospel from the other readings and surrounds it with particular honor and

veneration. Indeed, its reading is reserved to the ordained minister, who concludes by kissing the Book; it calls us to stand up to listen and to make the sign of the Cross on our forehead, our mouth and our breast; the candles and in-

cense honor Christ, who, through the Gospel reading, makes his effective Word resonate. From these signs, the as-sembly recognizes the presence of Christ who gives them the “Good News” which converts and transforms. What oc-

curs is a direct discourse, as attested by the acclamations with which we respond to the proclamation: “Glory to you, O Lord” and “Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ”. We stand up to listen to the Gospel: but it is Christ who is speaking to us,

there. And this is why we are attentive, because it is a direct conversation. It is the Lord who is speaking to us. Thus, in the Mass we do not read the Gospel in order to know how things happened, but rather, we listen to the Gos-

pel in order to realize what Jesus once did and said; and that Word is living, the Word of Jesus that is in the Gospel is alive and touches my heart. Therefore, listening to the Gospel is very important, with an open heart, because it is the

living Word. Saint Augustine writes: “The Gospel is the mouth of Christ. He is seated in heaven, but he has not stopped speaking on earth”. If it is true that in the liturgy “Christ is still proclaiming His Gospel”, it follows that, by par-

ticipating in the Mass, we must give him a response. We listen to the Gospel and we must give a response in our life. To Be continued …

Congratulations to our 2018 graduates!

For I know well the plans I have in mind for you—says the LORD—plans for your welfare and not for woe, so as to give you a future of hope. When you call me, and come and pray to me, I will listen to you. When you look for me, you will find me. Yes, when you seek me with all your heart, I will let you find me. Jeremiah 29:11-13
