The money will be used to improve health services in the South Cariboo. We've seen oversized cheques before but Knight Konrad Schmid-Meil even created an envelope to go with it.

Williams Lake and District Credit Union provided two $1,000 bursaries to Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School graduates.

Provision of bursaries to local students, Alicia Briggs and Andrea Zemanek, is con-sistent with the WLDCU’s commit-ment to support its members and their communities.

Briggs will head to the University of Lethbridge this fall where she is enrolled in a pre-medical pro-gram with a major in biology. A judo competitor at the national level, she also instructs a chil-dren’s class at the local judo club.

While at PSO, she participated in the peer counselling class, and the Amnesty Club. Briggs says she is excited to spend the summer working for the BC Forest Service as a firefighter.

Zemanek heads to Queens University this fall to commence general studies for a Bachelor of Science degree. Future fields of interest are kinesiology or phys-iotherapy.

She loves the out-doors and outdoor activities, such as hiking, rowing and skiing, and is hoping

to work on an Initial Attack Crew fight-ing fires this summer. A participant in the PSO leadership program and the British Columbia

C o - o p e r a t i v e Association’s YES Leadership Camp, Zemanek intends to use her leadership skills by volunteering at this year’s camp.

“Whippledon” is the Cariboo version of Wimbledon Tennis Tournament.

It will be held at the 108 Resort Tennis Courts on July 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

New and former tennis players wel-come to join in on the games. Names will be drawn and games will last a maximum of 30 minutes.

Everyone is wel-come to come join the fun. The resort will be supplying straw-berries and whip cream at the end of the games.

Wouldn’t it be great if people valued animals so much that spaying and neuter-ing your pet was just a socially accepted norm?

While many people ensure their animals aren’t adding to British Columbia’s pet overpopulation crisis, many oth-erwise caring pet guardians don’t take this important step.

Tragically, many more animals are born in B.C. than there are homes for. The BC SPCA and other animal rescue organizations shelter and find homes for tens of thousands of these unwanted ani-mals each year, but sadly many more are simply abandoned by their guardians and suffer a cruel death from starvation, dis-ease, predation or injury.

The BC SPCA is urging all pet guard-ians to have their pets sterilized if they haven’t already done so. In addition to sav-ing lives, your pet will live a calmer and happier life.

Here are just some of the benefits for your pet:

• Neutering generally reduc-

es aggressive behaviours in pets. Neutered dogs are calmer and less likely to bite, attack or get into altercations at the dog park. Neutered cats don’t have the drive to mark and protect their territory and are less likely to spray or get into cat fights.

• Female cats go in and out of heat every three weeks between January and November. In addition to prevent-ing unwanted litters, spaying your cat will reduce her desire to escape to find a mate, spraying or inappropriate elimi-nation, howling and attracting unwanted male cats onto your property.

• Spaying or neutering your

pet reduces the likelihood of them developing uterine, ovarian and testicular cancers.

• Having your pet sterilized also provides an oppor-tunity to have other important health pro-cedures performed, as necessary, such as an identification tattoo or microchip or teeth cleaning. Spaying and neuter-ing is done under a general anesthetic, so your pet won’t be in pain.

If cost is a concern for you, check with your local SPCA. The SPCA provides assis-tance to low-income pet guardians where possible and many communities have low-cost spay/neuter funds administered through the local

One year later, the gold mining town of Barkerville celebrat-ed the anniversary

of that historic union by throwing the first-ever recorded “Dominion Day” party on July 1, 1868 – three years before British Columbia joined the Confederation.

As part of the renowned heritage site’s own 150th anniversary season, Barkerville Historic Town is at it again and Dominion Day is set to explode (almost

literally) with fun July 1.

Barkerville will be bringing back its traditional Dominion Day activities with gusto, starting with the cutting of an eight-foot long, 100-plus pound Happy Birthday Canada cake at 11 a.m.

At 11:30, there will be a special ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new exhib-it of multi-media representations of Barkerville’s iconic St. Saviour’s church, at the McIntyre House.

Barkerville’s time-honoured main-street parade of costumed interpreters will commence at noon, starting at the real St.

Saviour’s, and will be followed by an array of traditional Victorian games for both children and adults for the remain-der of the afternoon, including a broad jump, sack race, tug-o-war, egg toss, greasy pole climb, and more.

At 7 p.m., there will be the premiere of Newman & Wright’s 1930s live radio show WCFB: ON AIR at the Theatre Royal, fol-lowed by the House Hotel’s “old-time” dance party.

Barkerville will cap off the night with a fireworks display at 10 p.m.

This continu-ing series of articles highlights the most common invasive plants found in the South Cariboo, and how to identify them, with information and photos provided by the Cariboo Regional District.

Invasive plants have the potential to pose undesirable or detrimental impacts

on humans, animals or ecosystems, and are often mistak-en for wildflowers because of their rapid spread through urban landscapes, agri-cultural lands and ecosystems.

These alien invad-ers are second only to habitat loss for the most significant threat to biodiver-sity, according to the

International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

Number 8: Yellow Flag IrisThis perennial is

widely sold in nurs-eries and on the Internet for ornamen-tal ponds and water gardens, and Yellow Flag Iris spreads both by seeds and roots.

The roots and the leaves contain a sap that is toxic if ingest-ed and can cause skin irritation. This aquat-

ic invasive plant can grow in a variety of habitats, including fresh or salt water.

It is a major problem because it colonizes and forms dense stands choking out many native wet-land plants, which reduce resources and habitat for wild-life. Other impacts include changing the width of water courses and affecting water flow in irriga-tion canals and flood control ditches.

During the past six months, the auxiliary has received more than $950 from the meat draws thanks to the generosity of the patrons, with an extra $200 donated by Tim Zabaras of 100 Mile Wood Products.

South Cariboo Rhythmic Gymnastics Club had its year-end performance on June 8 in the Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School gymnasium. Regan Barrett, standing, and Klaudie Slosarkova performed a graceful duet with scarves and it was one of many skilled performances that thrilled the full-house audience.

All motorcyclists and passengers in British Columbia must wear motorcycle hel-mets that display the proper industry safe-ty certification label. Helmets must comply with standards out-lined by the United States Department of Transportation (DOT), Snell Memorial Foundation 2005 or 2010, or United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE).

Riders found vio-lating the new helmet laws will receive a $138 fine.

of absolutely every-thing around us.

We live it, breathe it, and even eat it.

When I was 10 years old, I attended my first science sum-mer camp and was introduced to the idea that science sur-rounds and fills us. It was a camp called the EUReKA! Science Program – a non-profit, student-run organization based out of Thompson Rivers University.

I was never a child that was immedi-ately drawn towards the sciences, but EUReKA! shed a unique and exciting light towards it in a fun, friendly environ-ment.

During my week with my fellow campers, we were introduced to all different aspects of science from chem-istry to biology, physics to engineer-ing, and computers. The instructors were energetic and dedi-cated to helping us explore through dis-

sections, experiments, and various fun inter-active projects.

What I remember most of all was build-ing a rocket car, along with a vast array of other projects. I am proud to say I have had the opportunity to be an instructor for EUReKA! and I’m extremely enthused I was able to help other youth have the same awesome experience I did all those years ago.

EUReKA! will be coming to 100 Mile House on July 9-13 and is welcoming campers seven-14 years to attend the week-long program. The camp will be tak-ing place at South Cariboo Rec. Centre.

About two-thirds of crashes between a motorcycle and anoth-er vehicle are the fault of the other vehicle.

Important tips• Check your mir-

rors frequently, be aware of road condi-tions that pose hazards to motorcyclists and look carefully for traf-fic at intersections.

It can be difficult to judge the speed and distance of a motor-

cyclist so be extra cautious, especially when turning left.

• Watch for signs, such as turn signals, shoulder checks or leaning, that signal the rider may turn or change lanes.

• Motorcycles use a full lane. Leave at least three seconds

of following distance behind a motorcycle.

• Acknowledge riders with a wave or eye contact, they know you see them.

Give riders the space they need to change lanes and never try to pass a motorcycle using the same lane.

The B.C. Liberal government is spend-ing $22.2 million to fund 190 new nurse practitioner positions around the province over the next three years.

British Columbia

established nurse practitioner training in 2005, with a mas-ter’s degree program that allows registered nurses to take on many of the functions traditionally reserved for doctors.

The health min-istry states there are currently 225 nurse

practitioners regis-tered with the College of Registered Nurses of B.C., but 72 are not working in that capac-ity and another 30 are graduating from the program this year.

Health Minister Mike de Jong said the new program is designed to close that gap.

The positions are seen as important in shifting the health-care system from an acute care model to a preventive and chronic-care model that better matches the actual demand and B.C.’s aging pop-ulation.

The government passed legislation in 2011 to allow nurse practitioners to pro-vide their full scope of practice, including diagnosis, prescrib-ing drugs, ordering diagnostic tests and treating most common medical conditions.

NDP Leader Adrian Dix called the program an overdue

measure he has been urging the govern-ment to do for several years.

“What the gov-ernment was doing was training nurse practitioners and seeing them go the United States and go to Ontario because the government that trained them didn’t think highly enough of the program to actually have jobs here.”

There are currently 45 nurse practitioner training positions, 15 each at the University of B.C., the University of Victoria and the University of Northern B.C.
