Study UK: a Guide for Education Agents and Counsellors

What is a MOOC
Massive Open On line Learning,
FutureLearn platform
High quality free courses
Elementary level and has no eligibility criteria.
3
Why ?
FutureLearn MOOCs are responsive – i.e. they can be accessed from mobile devices.
MOOCs are perceived by learners as an online event, which is what distinguishes them from self-access courses.
The British Council has a number of MOOCs and uses them to bring value to the UK
The MOOC provides an entry level of learning to allow potential new education agents, advisors and counsellors to familiarise themselves with the UK education system.
4
Course Structure
British Council MOOCs are ‘broad and shallow’ with about 9-12 hours of work per course or less
The course length is anything between 2-6 weeks.
Each course runs at least 3 times.
The focus is on social learning and on mainly learner-to-learner engagement – learners discussing the course content with each other.
The learners create the content, mainly with their comments but also by uploading photos and audio and taking part in live events.
5
Pedagogy
FutureLearn’s model is based on ‘social learning’ pedagogy.
Input and comment model. Learners are given some input and asked to react and respond to it in the comments.
Input is video, reading and audio.
English only (therefore minimum intermediate level (B1 on the CEFR).

July 2017, beta test version, over 3000 learners

Engagement
“Thank you Helen, Nishika, Sireen, British Council and all the participants. I really enjoyed this week's lectures. The thing is that the organisers as well as educators did a lot of efforts to establish and run the course. It is always easy to criticise, but the course and the discussions were professionally organised. Thanks a lot once again from Uzbekistan”
