Step 1: NOTICE THE EVENTAre you aware of your surroundings?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ahg6qcgoay4
![Page 4: 1 step up - final presentation 4.18.13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062406/55a8ce981a28ab0b308b460e/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Step 2: INTERPRET IT AS A PROBLEM
Ask yourself…
• Does it go against your morals?
• Does this problem go against the norm in a negative way?
• Is this problem hurting you or the other people?
![Page 5: 1 step up - final presentation 4.18.13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062406/55a8ce981a28ab0b308b460e/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Influence
How are you influenced to make your decision?
1. Informational Influence
2. Pluralistic Ignorance
3. Normative Influence
![Page 6: 1 step up - final presentation 4.18.13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062406/55a8ce981a28ab0b308b460e/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
“It’s not hard to make decisions once you know what your values are.”
–Roy E. Disney

Step 3: ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY
• Bystander Effect: people are more likely to intervene when they are alone than when they are part of a group
• This occurs because of responsibility diffusion– Responsibility assumed and number of people present is an inverse relationship
• Many documented occurrences where bystander effect caused the loss of a life– Kitty Genovese, homeless man stabbed in New York, Audrie Pott
• Other reasons people don’t act:– Others are more qualified or skilled
– Afraid of judgment from peers
– Afraid they may not have the knowledge or skills to help
– Simply don’t feel responsible
![Page 8: 1 step up - final presentation 4.18.13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062406/55a8ce981a28ab0b308b460e/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Strategies
• Do not rationalize away responsibility.
• Verbalize your intentions – you are more likely to help that way.
• Engage others – I’ll do A and you do B (see video on motorcycle accident in a few slides)
![Page 9: 1 step up - final presentation 4.18.13](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062406/55a8ce981a28ab0b308b460e/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Step 4: HAVE THE SKILLS TO INTERVENE
• What skills were implemented in the video?
– Experience
– Emotional skills
– Physical skills
• Experience:
– The man who intervened had experienced a similar situation before
– If you notice a dangerous or violent situation that you have seen before, intervene!

Physical Skills
• You don’t have to be athletic to have physical skills!
– CPR
– Picking up a phone to call 911
