A home walking program for adolescents with JIA
Recruiting 60 participants Working with Jill Blitz, DPT Received the Quality of Life Grant through
the Arthritis Foundation
◦ To study the effects and impact of a pedometer based walking program in adolescents with JIA and lower extremity involvement.
◦ To determine whether the addition of an educational program to a pedometer based family walking group increases exercise compliance and exercise tolerance
Three phases, four visits
During each evaluation the following will be done with each participant:◦ MD: (Joint exam & BMI)◦ PT: (range of motion, strength, 6 minute walk
test)◦ Surveys (CHAQ, Walk with Ease self-test, VAS)
First Visit: consent and evaluation Instructed to increase walking (6 weeks) Second Visit: evaluation and pedometer
instruction◦ Half of participants will participate in modified Walk
with Ease course through the Arthritis Foundation Walk with family and count steps (6 weeks) Third Visit: evaluation and pedometers
uploaded onto computer Walk with family and count steps (8 week) Fourth Visit: evaluation and satisfaction survey
Currently enrolled 15 participants This week had first participant complete 3rd
visit
